Forgotten Volkswagen Bus. 1958 PGSG We Finally made the Deal.

- After 4 years and 2 months of trying to buy this old 1958 VW Bus. We were finally able to convince the owner to part with it. Other than the fact that it has been repainted the wrong color this Bus is pretty straight and is fairly complete. JC.
thats a nice score, took a little while and some drinks , but much better then rusting into the ground.
Mustie1 It was a little frustrating at times but worth the wait. Its pretty tough sometimes talking people into selling their Old VW's. Delicate balance of persistence without being a total PITA.
Rick S We're getting close. I was up visiting the owner a couple weeks ago. Thats another one I've been holding my breath on hoping the deal would come together.
It took me 20 years to get my my 13 window from the time I was 14 till I was almost 34 stopped and talked to the guy a couple times a year till he passed away and then his son finally sold it to me said he would have wanted me to have it

Easy Off full smell strength is the key,not the off brand,el cheapo oven cleaner which can/will etch any metal it comes into contact with whereas the EO doesn't,or at least that has been my experiences with them...

Me and my dad had a 67 split, it was a swiss army van but it still had the side windows and the owner before us converted it into a camper, it had 36,000 kilometres on the original 1600 single port, it too had a cranking hole same as yours.

Best bet for easy off oven cleaner is to let the bus sit out in the sun and get warm on a hot day and then spray it with oven cleaner let it sit for a little while and hit it with a pressure washer. I bet the nose is all bondo under that paint but will find out after it's stripped.

I'd think a good machine shop could weld and re-cut the lips of those lug-holes on that wheel, though I don't know what it would require to get the metal to the right strength/plasticity to match the original durability. Huh, that cracked/delaminated window is interesting, could be interesting in an art project of some kind! Nice find, looks like a good project!

Nice didn't some of these busses have double doors on the driver's side for narrow alleys
Ryan Zurfluh They did have a Double Door version. They are fairly common with panels and less common on Standard and Deluxe Microbuses. JC.

Does oven cleaner remove paint? And how do you apply it? I have some paint previous owner applied with a brush I want to remove. Thanks.
I’ve used a stuff called “tuff strip” in the past. If you work in small areas and work quickly, it’s pretty good at eating all kinds of paint on top of OG paint.
I’ve never tried oven cleaner though.

What does oven cleaner do? Heard it mentioned a few times.
Brian Kinnard Guys use it to strip off the paint. It supposedly strips the paint without harming the original VW paint. JC.
