Mitski is not retiring soon! People believed that after Laurel Hell came out but lucky for us after she announced “The Land Is Inhospitable…” she released a statement saying essentially “i love making music and im willing to do whatever it takes to keep making it, im taking the good with the bad to keep doing what i love, i love you guys” and renewed her contract with her record label!
hiii this was so good, i love how u pay attention to the meanings! mitski usually lets people interpret her songs how they want, but to give more context for strawberry blonde: it’s about asian american desirability in conjunction with white romantic desirability (ex. "all i ever wanted was a life in your shape, i picture it soft as i ache" or “follow the white lines”). basically, it's her attempting to conform in order to win the love of a strawberry blonde (an indicator of whiteness because of how recessive the gene is) in competition with another girl who she knows she’s bound to lose to because of who she is. it's similar to "your best american girl,” which describes how women of color aren’t seen as viable romantic partners within the context of the american dream!
20:49 NOOOOOOOOO😭😤🙏🏼(My 2nd favorite on the album) This album was as a college project along with her 1st album. Not produced by Patric Hyland. She never performs anything from this or the 1st album in tours
During her 2022 tour I got to hear her perform Goodbye, my danish sweetheart from this album. I’m also think that during her be the cowboy tour she would perform I want you and liquid smooth. I honestly wished she would perform more songs from those first two albums 😭
Because Dreaming Costs Money, My Dear is one of my favourite Mitski songs purely for how the horns and her vocal layers overlap and dance with each other towards the end. And Class of 2013,,, yeowch.
I love this album so much. I think it is beautifully written and I enjoy it despite it having a kind of different production. This album and Lush are both college projects so they were made before Mitski was a musician. Also I love how Class of 2013 and Because dreaming costs money, my dear seems to kind of connect with each other. It's almost like Because dreaming costs money, my dear is a response to Class of 2013 I love to think that the "Darling, play your violin, i know it's what you live for" is a mother doing everything to make her daugther happy again so she won't feel tired and depressed like in 2013
I wanna add context to this album by saying that this album is not only her second one but it’s the last one she actually wrote in college and I think it was an assignment actually. This was before mitski was signed into any label and started working with her producer now !!!
We have the same reaction to class of 2013 hahaha (I hope you would react to laufey, i dont really know if shes really giving mitski vibe shes a jazz artist i hope you will listen to it 😅)
There were also two extra songs for this album (but she removed them off of Spotify like two years ago) and it was Shame (Jammin’ Out Solo Version) and Square (Solo Piano Version) and I honestly think if you really like the piano ballad-y songs you’d prefer that version of Square
this album is probably my fav because like it honestly feels like each song has such different meanings and stories to them and also probably because i love brass but whatever
this is my first reaction to the album too but it grew on and if you liked I want you. you should watch the Brooklyn steel live version it it's so good
While I do believe Shame can allude to that meaning I also believe it’s just for any bad habits in general . Since the song is called Shame and nobody knows behind closed doors I feel as though it can refer to sexual activities , self harm , ED’s , and so and so . She might’ve had a specific idea for her in mind but kept it relatively vague so others can relate with their shameful act as well whatever it may be .
Even tho Goodbye,my danish sweetheart isnt that popular its stuck in my brain and i have grown to love it the most out of all of her songs(i hated it at the start)
ik this is unrelated but i would love to u see react to a destinys child album! "the writings on the wall" album is a good place to start perosnally love this album!!!!

if you didn't know the door in "i want you" is a reference to the song "door" from her other album "Lush"
I love this album so much. I think it is beautifully written and I enjoy it despite it having a kind of different production. This album and Lush are both college projects so they were made before Mitski was a musician.
