Yes, I've definitely noticed that reduced food does taste better than regular priced food but nothing tastes as good as free food or when you are on work expenses - That stuff is particularly delicious!
One good thing about being retired is having time to look for bargains. The wife is always clipping coupons while looking for unadvertised sales in store. If I did the grocery shopping, I would just pick the longest line and eat as fast as I could til I got to the checkout.
The healthiest foods are the least expensive foods. Beans peas and lentils potatoes rice quinoa use sunflower and or pumpkin seeds in recipes buy frozen berries and frozen vegetables in bulk. Simple is healthy.

We eat meat or fish once a week but no diary at all the rest of what we eat is oats quinoa millet wild rice barley pasta potatoes and sweet potatoes with plenty of fruits vegetables sour dough and sprouted whole grain breads beans peas lentils nuts and seeds. We don’t have any recipes written down we have gotten to a point to where we just decide to start with what we have and we pair different foods together to make a meal. Spices and sauces like tahini sauce and peanut sauce go good with meals. Today we made a vegetable dish in the pan with chopped onion chopped mushrooms shredded carrot 2 zucchini chopped spinach and chickpeas and cooked it in vegetable broth. We cooked pasta on the side and added it to the vegetables adding fresh organic extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper. Yummy. 😋
I eat 100% plants and it is cheap - tofu beans potatoes Bananas carrots. Some items have gone up, but it's usually the processed food like jar sauces. All of these items are processed and animal foods so I doubt the app will be helpful
I am a "retired Ranch Cook"...once in awhile, they drag me out of retirement and I fill in for a Cook, here or there. I go in and, there is practically nothing to cook, everything is already cooked and frozen, all they do is drag it out of the freezers, warm it up, and serve it out. I feel lost, so I just dig around for a potato, onion, some hamburger, and I produce a great tasting meal...I am suspicious of that frozen stuff...LOL! I retired at 60. I am young and able to keep at it, but I think there are younger one's able to do what I do, but decided to just retire, and I love my freedom now, we are able to go at a minutes notice, where ever we feel like it.
With a family of 5 to feed my parents were great examples of frugal living including meals and shopping for them. Many years ago home economics was included in education. It is high time they brought that back- easy enough to include in the mathematics curriculum.I am proud to say, my children have copied my shopping habits - and hopefully they pass this on to their children too. Yet another brilliant video, being retired gives us the time to shop around for bargains and we actually feel like we are beating the system lol. We have also noticed No Frills seem to empty the shelves when another store have a great bargain, we always look at flip to see if the product we are buying is cheaper elsewhere and do a price match. We always go to Costco for cream, eggs, bread, chicken and meat as it always seems the best price. Lastly, many people don't realize McDonald's have senior discounts and we pay about 50c less than the normal price on our coffee and tea...we CAN win this war haha.
You’re speaking my language! My immigrant mom was very diligent in clipping coupons, buying huge quantities on sale and making a lot with surprisingly little. I followed suit when I moved out, saved a tremendous amount of money during my working life, and doing the same during retirement. Many years ago, I bought a vacuum sealer, it was a game changer. For example I would filet the chicken breasts and make soup from the rest (I can’t remember the last time I bought chicken breast at the regular price). Even found a way to freeze the soup with little mess. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
Hello, and you know, since the pandemic the three monopolistic grocers are making profit hand over fist, meanwhile they are screwing their customers over left and right. The grocery monopolies complain their operations cost SOOO much that they can't discount groceries for us, because they need to pocket all those profits and pay their shareholders dividends handsomely. Loblaw's is right at the top of that list. Where we live in Montreal (West End Downtown), there are 3 grocery stores in our neighborhood (Within 3 blocks of each other). Groceries are SOOO expensive in Montreal. Before the pandemic I could get away with shopping for around $100.00 per week. NOW every time I walk into a grocery store I am spending upwards of $200 to $250.00 a trip. I only buy as much as my granny cart can carry in one trip out and back. I've been through 3 granny carts in 18 months !!!
I'm a bottom feeder, eating mostly from the bottom of the food pyramid, i.e. beans, greens, fruits, vegetables, occasionally nuts, thanks from my parents and grandparents. Lot's of good cook books can be identified on Amazon and then be borrowed from the library, sometimes via an inter-library loans if necessary, a dozen recipes can go into rotation for a long time. RUclips is a rich resource. An Instant Pot and/or crockpot from Walmart are good investments, batch cooking and freezing is easy with these devices. A pressure canner is helpful with beans but have almost doubled in price in recent history. Occasional sorties to fast food takeout windows has not yet been conquered. I love the occasional beer and wine which taste better if not consumed frequently. I have a notion of "unearned" beer average, some statistics are best left unmentioned , I have a couple of bottles of Francis Ford Coppola's rose are on standby for the right occasion. Cheers!

I check all grocery stores Wed when sale flyers come out 5 grocery stores nearby so I can do circle to buy items on sale .We used to have rain checks store stopped them during covid now gouge as much as they can . I used to shop Costco a lot now go once a month and buy way less I find many items buy one get one cheaper than Costco .I have 2 large freezers were full during Covid when things cheaper going down as many items stopped buying to expensive .I brought a leg of lamb at Costco last week we had it next day shepperds pie and tonight kids will finish it was expensive but not divided 3 meals and 4 people.
Our local supermarket has a loyalty plan you can sign up for. That alone gives you a 2% reward on store brands, which we buy a lot of. On top of that they have digital "just for you coupons" based on your shopping history. Also about every other month I get a coupon for $10-$15 off a purchase of $100-$120. These days it is easy to hit $100 at the supermarket. With the rewards and just for you coupons I generally save about 15-20% on a typical shopping trip over the marked prices. Another thing to do is use your rewards credit card to pay at the market. I get 2% more in credit card rewards.
I buy most of my food directly from farmers, and I have not faced a lot of inflation. For example, I buy a quarter cow of pastured, grass fed Scottish Highland cow. That's very high quality beef, and it costs me $4.99 per lb., plus processing costs (about $150 total for processing costs). The person who sold this to me said that he was sorry that he had to raise his prices by 10 cents per lb. from the previous year. I have also purchased a half Duroc pastured pig for $4.75 per lb. I buy high quality green coffee beans from a company that sources them from coops in Colombia, Ethiopia, Indopnesia, for $5.99/lb. to $7.99/lb., and I roast them myself. I buy fruits and vegetables from the local farmers' market at very reasonable rates. Sometimes I spend more for high-quality. For example, I buy finnan haddie and salt cod from a Scottish immigrant (thank you Richard) in Maine. I usually bake my own bread, but sometimes I get lazy when Zingerman's has a sale. I have plenty of money in retirement, due to my 401K, but I still try to save money whenever I can.

More stuff we have in common - the air fryer, Flash, price matching. Plus, here in our city we have an Arab business that offers fruit and vegetables costing CONSIDERABLY less than the regular supermarkets because it caters to the ethnic market. Roger
I have not noticed a huge difference in prices because like someone else commented i use farms cutting out the middle man. My meat and poultry from local farms and quite often they even have sales on preportioned items. I go to the market on Saturdays and this time a year everything is excellent and i shop in season. When the season is over i buy some frozen vegetables and eat vegetables that are available like squash, Brussel sprouts, carrots, cabbage in the winter etc. i also think for what it is worth people need to learn how to cook which has a huge saving’s value. We eat out rarely. I do realize that shopping this way takes up home real estate so not something everyone can do. I have operated my home this way for 46 years and has always worked for me. There is also the world of canning and freezing which helps if you want to delve into that. I really don’t shop this way to save money although it has worked out in my favour but to get the best quality foods at the best prices.
It is always great fun to get a deal on something you want. Chicken has always been one of the cheapest meats, I remember buying a huge bag of chicken legs for 59cents a pound when my kids were young. I can probably make a list of all sorts of things to do with left over chicken, lol. At one point, I was never going to buy them again, but I love chicken, so... You put some great ideas here, thank you. You are not poor, compared to many, but why spend more than you have to no matter how much money you have? Thank you very much again!
My father was always looking for a deal and bragging about it if he found one. Me and my brother would always make fun of him when we were much younger. Fast forward 40 yrs later…we are exactly like him lol.

I buy raw chicken breast for $4.99 lb on weekly sales at Canadian supermarkets. I look at flyers on sites that publish flyers for many stores. Last weeks there was pork tenderloin for 2.99 lb, ground beef and even raw beef for 3.99 lb in cryovac pack.
I usually shop on a Monday when the supermarkets are getting rid of what didn't sell on the weekend for 50% off. BTW Loblaws and Freshco are 50% but the Great Canadian SuperCentre is only 30%. I always look for items on their last day. There is nothing wrong with them if you cook them soon or freeze them. It is a sell by/ top quality date not a suddenly turns to poison date. This week I got fresh chicken thighs half off and a local squash and made a meal for three adults for $3 per person.
A few years ago because of a minor health issue I stopped eating meat , I've found my food expenses are way down. It's not ideal for everyone but cutting back a few times a week can really make a difference😄 Thanks for all you do!

My monthly budget has been $200/month for a about a decade. I waste nothing and take advantage of sales and my freezer. Peppers on sale, I'll fry them up in strips and freeze them. When lemons are on sale, I juice them, freeze it in ice cube trays and freeze the empty halves as well. They grate very easily while frozen so I always have access to lemon zest as I need it. And nowadays, these hacks are needed more than ever.

New York harbor was the last place we wanted to be, since I worked on the Jersey side with a similar view for 17 years. We felt captive, held hostage, a overcrowded ship, sketchy activities, and no solace. We’re still sick, but home now. btw, we shop at Aldi for best food value. A lot of the price rises, and they will likely continue, have been fairly predictable given conditions in many places or growing regions. The Coffee crops in a few places were hammered by frost, if I remember correctly, so it was fairly obvious that supply would be impacted. The same is happening atm with staples such as Rice and Flour due to severe weather events in many places and various countries limiting or stopping exports so that they have enough for themselves. Also China has been buying up lots of things so that it has some food security. We tend to buy things on special or on days where there are seniors discounts but don't really go too crazy about it all. We also have stuff stashed that we bought a fair while back that we use to pad out what we buy each week and in fact we've hardly had to buy much of anything over the last couple of weeks. Our vegie garden is starting to produce now so buying fresh stuff won't really be necessary soon. We're also enjoying cooking more and making things that don't require lots of expensive ingredients. It's quite amazing what can be produced if you try. Today I have some stuff to burn so we shall be having a meal cooked over the coals down the back of our block which will be lovely. No power or gas used, lovely surroundings and eating good food whilst watching the birds come and go. Life is good.
I use the digital coupons online and the store sends me paper coupons as well. I can stack the savings. Today my bill dropped from $107 to $68. Clipping the digital coupon takes only minutes. If I shop the first Wed. of the month I get an additional 10% senior discount. Some grocery prices are skyrocketing while other things are really cheap. I expect prices to rise as our fuel prices have jumped $1 over the last 3 weeks.
Great video, again! One of the things that I really use is my vacuum sealer. Although I don't like using a lot of plastic, I have saved a lot of money by buying meats on sale and packaging them and vacuum sealing them at home. For example, I will cut a sirloin roast into smaller steaks. The vaccum seal makes them last so much longer in the freezer.
Hi Norm and Tina: Food inflation is bad even when we buy specials at Costco. Also shrinkflation with manufacturers being sneaky and reducing the size of product size. I still have not tried a chicken in the air fryer lol. Maybe too much chicken for me. Wife’s a pescatarian. Have you ever toasted bread or buns in the air fryer? Tried it yesterday. Shocking. I shop our local grocery store a couple of times per week. The cost of meat has gone up so much this past year that I need to buy only on sale. Fortunately my store has “manager’s specials” a few days before the sell by date. I look out for the more expensive cuts of beef and packs of chicken, get it 1/2 price, and put it in the freezer. I’ve learned ways to use cuts I had not bought before.

$4 CDN is = to $3 USD. Canadian milk farmers are not subsidized, instead milk supply is limited and the price for raw milk set by a Milk Marketing Board.
Food prices in America have been very high. One trick I have used as a teacher, is to eat school lunch! In our state, Virginia, school lunches are very very healthy and are low cost for students and staff. Depending on family income, some children get breakfast and lunch for free. My school system has delicious lunches. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, two or three options for hot lunch, and milk to drink. Children choose from a selection of of fruits and veggies like fresh carrots, celery, tossed salad, pear slices, grapes, broccoli/cauliflower salad, a banana and the list goes on. It costs me 3.00 for a yummy hot lunch. I couldn’t possibly pack anything as good for that for a similar price. Not all school systems have good food, but in these times I am grateful that I can have a well balanced tasty lunch every day. I often use it as main meal and then can have a lighter dinner with no problem.

Food prices in the US spiked over the summer but have gone back down. There are amazing sales to be had if you shop around. Stock up when it's on sale and you won't have to pay a lot when the prices fluctuate.
During the past couple decades, food in Canada, only cost consumers roughly 10% of their after tax income. Compare that to the 50’s and most of the 60’s when it took close to 30% of take home wage to buy the week’s grocery. We have enjoyed low grocery prices here in Canada, thanks in part to the tremendous advancements in agriculture production in both USA and Canada. Typical cow in 2023 can produce twice the volume of milk that a cow could produce during the 1970’s. Partly owing to better genetics in the dairy animals, but also great advancements in crop production. While 2 ton of corn per acre was considered a good crop in 1970, and $200.00 per ton was a excellent price. Today average yield is 4 tons per acre and the current price is just $245.00 per ton. Fertilizer back in 1970’s ran around $300.00 per ton, now in 2023 fertilizer cost $1,000.00 per ton. Is the price of food too high? Ask a farmer what he thinks !

Giant Tiger is great for price matching, we rely on it weekly. Stay away from any of the Weston family Empire stores aka Loblaws, Independent, Shoppers, the prices are truly criminal. Although we do get eggs, and milk discounted there on weekends. Real Canadian Superstore will still actually price match. I also noticed at Shoppers that the senior discount age was 55 yrs, now they have put it up to 65 yrs. ,hoping nobody would notice. If you see something obviously wildly overpriced, please don't buy it because this is what is keeping the prices sky high.

Your "locked down" supermarket now has Irresistables Colombian for $13.99/900g. Much better than the red stuff that was (sometimes) $9.99 and I think is more than the $18.99 you quote.
Farm Boy is doing a great job at the moment to keep the inflation down while offering high fresh quality products. I am very impressed with their hard work compared to Independents or else. Vegetables and meat are outstanding (Canadian quality wise). Look at their discounted items. They are really good. Trust me, I worked in retail in a previous life in Europe.

I love a good bargain and I have always been a frugal shopper. We have a small store in the States called Aldi- great prices consistently and fun gourmet cheeses and spreads. I primarily shop there and get the specials on meat etc from our local grocery store. Not a Walmart fan!!! Great content today!
We have done a short on it , but coat the chicken in olive oil , herbs , salt and pepper do 30 mins each side , breast side down first and gives a perfect roast chicken 🐔 Cheers 👍

Shoppers drug mart has gone crazy. Used to get my coffee, my creamer, butter, and other assorted items there...no more. My coffee is 19.99. My creamer is 4.99 and butter is $7. There is no way!
Cut coupons and collect loyalty points. Also, shop the pantry first. I don’t know how many doubles of things I’ve got in mine. And cut down on waste. Difficult for one person households.
If you're talking 18,99 $CAN for a kilo of coffee beans of a 'certain' brand...... wow, compared to the Netherlands, that's a bargain! If I tell you the petrol/gas price.....!!! Unhealthy food here is the cheapest, whereas healthy foods are getting more expensive by the day. The quality of fresh foods seems to be deteriorating. Oftentimes some foods are not available or in lesser quantities. Climate change and the Ukraine war. It's a challenge finding the better stuff at 'reasonable' prices. But I too have plenty of time to look around and compare. It's a new pastime!!
Yes the USA food prices are very high. We try to stock up and freeze food . I doubt if food prices will ever drop back . You gave some really good bargain prices ! We also have a discount Aldi store which is very popular with a lot of non name brand items . It’s a good store with cheaper fresh vegetables and fruit . USA is the same as far as rising prices at the grocery store. A great deal on the chicken. We watch for sales, BOGO deals, and get a senior citizen discount one day a week at our grocery store. Our credit card gives us cash back and gas points for purchases.
We absolutely must shop smart, be willing to vary from your list when you see a bargain (yes there are bargains) and above all stay away from the drive through restaurants and coffee shops! And if you think the price is outrageous, don’t buy it!
I buy in bulk whenever possible. Like frozen fruit. Also I gave up coffee, don’t even miss it. And gave up on red meat years ago. With climate changes I fear produce will become unaffordable as well.
Why would inflation affect your food Bill? Canada Pension Plan (CPP) rate increases are calculated once a year using the Consumer price index (CPI) All-Items Index. They come into effect each January. The amount of your CPP and OAS cheque increases to match the rate of inflation.
Same thing in the USA, which I get, but it doesn't work like that somehow when I go to buy things. So, I don't think someone is telling the truth in their figuring, or somewhere along the line.
Keep an eye on the price that comes up on the cash register when it is being scanned. If it is higher than the shelf price or sale price, you can get the first item FREE up to a $10 value. It’s called the Scanning Code of Practice and can be found on a sticker near where you pay. We catch mistakes at least monthly and score free food. Most grocery stores and Walmarts have it.
Can everyone that is a a retired couple post their monthly food costs. Our average cost in Eastern Canada for 2 is $850.00 Cdn We eat very well. We could cut this down. What is your location and average cost? We rarely eat out.

For Flash food you have to have a cell phone to access the foods. Unfortunately I don't have a cellphone. Prices are indeed crazy! I just use my flyers and buy the loss leader items. Some times you can get the cream deal at giant tigers. Got two for25cents each. When those burgers are on special. I'll buy two. Sometimes you have to hunt for the deals. Fun thing to do! 😆
Did you just buy one chicken or the maximum amount allowed? Also, you are both English, and surely you know that the prices in the UK are totally out of control, some cannot even heat their homes, so thank goodness for small mercies here in Canada.
It depends where you are and what you buy. We have some of the best prices on fresh food. We can buy 2 pints of organic strawberries for $6 at our local market. Our relatives in CA pay more than that USD for 1 pint and that is where they come from
Guys, I love that period because it forces us to ensure we are not wasting and we need to be vey careful when we purchase groceries. My advice to everybody is to buy only fresh products strategically, when their prices come down, in season or in promotion. For more rafined products, such as cheese, wait for the 50% discounts on good quality brands and fill up your fridge with it (Cheeses get better with age). 🙂. For saving money, please learn to cook with left overs and second cuts. You will discover that you can make wonder out of things that some other would just dump by pure imbecility in the garbage bin. I am saying please learn because I know in North America people often waste their good food and buy industrial poisonous foods instead.

"Sell by" dates are based on when a manufacturer believes food will be freshest, none of them mean food will be unsafe to eat after that date.

I feel lost, so I just dig around for a potato, onion, some hamburger, and I produce a great tasting meal...I am suspicious of that frozen stuff...LOL! I retired at 60. I am young and able to keep at it, but I think there are younger one's able to do what I do, but decided to just retire, and I love my freedom now, we are able to go at a minutes notice, where ever we feel like it.
With a family of 5 to feed my parents were great examples of frugal living including meals and shopping for them. Many years ago home economics was included in education. It is high time they brought that back- easy enough to include in the mathematics curriculum.I am proud to say, my children have copied my shopping habits - and hopefully they pass this on to their children too. Yet another brilliant video, being retired gives us the time to shop around for bargains and we actually feel like we are beating the system lol.
We have also noticed No Frills seem to empty the shelves when another store have a great bargain, we always look at flip to see if the product we are buying is cheaper elsewhere and do a price match.
We always go to Costco for cream, eggs, bread, chicken and meat as it always seems the best price.
Lastly, many people don't realize McDonald's have senior discounts and we pay about 50c less than the normal price on our coffee and tea...we CAN win this war haha.

My immigrant mom was very diligent in clipping coupons, buying huge quantities on sale and making a lot with surprisingly little.
I followed suit when I moved out, saved a tremendous amount of money during my working life, and doing the same during retirement.
Many years ago, I bought a vacuum sealer, it was a game changer. For example I would filet the chicken breasts and make soup from the rest (I can’t remember the last time I bought chicken breast at the regular price). Even found a way to freeze the soup with little mess. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
Hello, and you know, since the pandemic the three monopolistic grocers are making profit hand over fist, meanwhile they are screwing their customers over left and right. The grocery monopolies complain their operations cost SOOO much that they can't discount groceries for us, because they need to pocket all those profits and pay their shareholders dividends handsomely. Loblaw's is right at the top of that list. Where we live in Montreal (West End Downtown), there are 3 grocery stores in our neighborhood (Within 3 blocks of each other). Groceries are SOOO expensive in Montreal. Before the pandemic I could get away with shopping for around $100.00 per week. NOW every time I walk into a grocery store I am spending upwards of $200 to $250.00 a trip. I only buy as much as my granny cart can carry in one trip out and back. I've been through 3 granny carts in 18 months !!!

Food prices are crazy here in the US. It is ridiculous.
I'm a bottom feeder, eating mostly from the bottom of the food pyramid, i.e. beans, greens, fruits, vegetables, occasionally nuts, thanks from my parents and grandparents. Lot's of good cook books can be identified on Amazon and then be borrowed from the library, sometimes via an inter-library loans if necessary, a dozen recipes can go into rotation for a long time. RUclips is a rich resource. An Instant Pot and/or crockpot from Walmart are good investments, batch cooking and freezing is easy with these devices. A pressure canner is helpful with beans but have almost doubled in price in recent history. Occasional sorties to fast food takeout windows has not yet been conquered. I love the occasional beer and wine which taste better if not consumed frequently. I have a notion of "unearned" beer average, some statistics are best left unmentioned , I have a couple of bottles of Francis Ford Coppola's rose are on standby for the right occasion. Cheers!

I check all grocery stores Wed when sale flyers come out 5 grocery stores nearby so I can do circle to buy items on sale .We used to have rain checks store stopped them during covid now gouge as much as they can . I used to shop Costco a lot now go once a month and buy way less I find many items buy one get one cheaper than Costco .I have 2 large freezers were full during Covid when things cheaper going down as many items stopped buying to expensive .I brought a leg of lamb at Costco last week we had it next day shepperds pie and tonight kids will finish it was expensive but not divided 3 meals and 4 people.
Our local supermarket has a loyalty plan you can sign up for. That alone gives you a 2% reward on store brands, which we buy a lot of. On top of that they have digital "just for you coupons" based on your shopping history. Also about every other month I get a coupon for $10-$15 off a purchase of $100-$120. These days it is easy to hit $100 at the supermarket. With the rewards and just for you coupons I generally save about 15-20% on a typical shopping trip over the marked prices. Another thing to do is use your rewards credit card to pay at the market. I get 2% more in credit card rewards.

I buy most of my food directly from farmers, and I have not faced a lot of inflation. For example, I buy a quarter cow of pastured, grass fed Scottish Highland cow. That's very high quality beef, and it costs me $4.99 per lb., plus processing costs (about $150 total for processing costs). The person who sold this to me said that he was sorry that he had to raise his prices by 10 cents per lb. from the previous year. I have also purchased a half Duroc pastured pig for $4.75 per lb. I buy high quality green coffee beans from a company that sources them from coops in Colombia, Ethiopia, Indopnesia, for $5.99/lb. to $7.99/lb., and I roast them myself. I buy fruits and vegetables from the local farmers' market at very reasonable rates. Sometimes I spend more for high-quality. For example, I buy finnan haddie and salt cod from a Scottish immigrant (thank you Richard) in Maine. I usually bake my own bread, but sometimes I get lazy when Zingerman's has a sale. I have plenty of money in retirement, due to my 401K, but I still try to save money whenever I can.
I do the same and have not found very much difference and everything is highest quality like you said. I was reading the comments waiting for someone to write something like this.

I have not noticed a huge difference in prices because like someone else commented i use farms cutting out the middle man. My meat and poultry from local farms and quite often they even have sales on preportioned items. I go to the market on Saturdays and this time a year everything is excellent and i shop in season. When the season is over i buy some frozen vegetables and eat vegetables that are available like squash, Brussel sprouts, carrots, cabbage in the winter etc. i also think for what it is worth people need to learn how to cook which has a huge saving’s value. We eat out rarely. I do realize that shopping this way takes up home real estate so not something everyone can do. I have operated my home this way for 46 years and has always worked for me. There is also the world of canning and freezing which helps if you want to delve into that. I really don’t shop this way to save money although it has worked out in my favour but to get the best quality foods at the best prices.
It is always great fun to get a deal on something you want. Chicken has always been one of the cheapest meats, I remember buying a huge bag of chicken legs for 59cents a pound when my kids were young. I can probably make a list of all sorts of things to do with left over chicken, lol. At one point, I was never going to buy them again, but I love chicken, so... You put some great ideas here, thank you. You are not poor, compared to many, but why spend more than you have to no matter how much money you have? Thank you very much again!

I buy raw chicken breast for $4.99 lb on weekly sales at Canadian supermarkets. I look at flyers on sites that publish flyers for many stores. Last weeks there was pork tenderloin for 2.99 lb, ground beef and even raw beef for 3.99 lb in cryovac pack.

I usually shop on a Monday when the supermarkets are getting rid of what didn't sell on the weekend for 50% off. BTW Loblaws and Freshco are 50% but the Great Canadian SuperCentre is only 30%. I always look for items on their last day. There is nothing wrong with them if you cook them soon or freeze them. It is a sell by/ top quality date not a suddenly turns to poison date. This week I got fresh chicken thighs half off and a local squash and made a meal for three adults for $3 per person.

My monthly budget has been $200/month for a about a decade. I waste nothing and take advantage of sales and my freezer. Peppers on sale, I'll fry them up in strips and freeze them. When lemons are on sale, I juice them, freeze it in ice cube trays and freeze the empty halves as well. They grate very easily while frozen so I always have access to lemon zest as I need it. And nowadays, these hacks are needed more than ever.

A lot of the price rises, and they will likely continue, have been fairly predictable given conditions in many places or growing regions.
The Coffee crops in a few places were hammered by frost, if I remember correctly, so it was fairly obvious that supply would be impacted.
The same is happening atm with staples such as Rice and Flour due to severe weather events in many places and various countries limiting or stopping exports so that they have enough for themselves.
Also China has been buying up lots of things so that it has some food security.
We tend to buy things on special or on days where there are seniors discounts but don't really go too crazy about it all. We also have stuff stashed that we bought a fair while back that we use to pad out what we buy each week and in fact we've hardly had to buy much of anything over the last couple of weeks.
Our vegie garden is starting to produce now so buying fresh stuff won't really be necessary soon.
We're also enjoying cooking more and making things that don't require lots of expensive ingredients.
It's quite amazing what can be produced if you try.
Today I have some stuff to burn so we shall be having a meal cooked over the coals down the back of our block which will be lovely. No power or gas used, lovely surroundings and eating good food whilst watching the birds come and go.

I use the digital coupons online and the store sends me paper coupons as well. I can stack the savings. Today my bill dropped from $107 to $68. Clipping the digital coupon takes only minutes. If I shop the first Wed. of the month I get an additional 10% senior discount. Some grocery prices are skyrocketing while other things are really cheap. I expect prices to rise as our fuel prices have jumped $1 over the last 3 weeks.
Very true especially in Canada with the government increasing the carbon tax on fuel.
Great video, again! One of the things that I really use is my vacuum sealer. Although I don't like using a lot of plastic, I have saved a lot of money by buying meats on sale and packaging them and vacuum sealing them at home. For example, I will cut a sirloin roast into smaller steaks. The vaccum seal makes them last so much longer in the freezer.

I shop our local grocery store a couple of times per week. The cost of meat has gone up so much this past year that I need to buy only on sale. Fortunately my store has “manager’s specials” a few days before the sell by date. I look out for the more expensive cuts of beef and packs of chicken, get it 1/2 price, and put it in the freezer. I’ve learned ways to use cuts I had not bought before.

Food prices in America have been very high. One trick I have used as a teacher, is to eat school lunch! In our state, Virginia, school lunches are very very healthy and are low cost for students and staff. Depending on family income, some children get breakfast and lunch for free. My school system has delicious lunches. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, two or three options for hot lunch, and milk to drink. Children choose from a selection of of fruits and veggies like fresh carrots, celery, tossed salad, pear slices, grapes, broccoli/cauliflower salad, a banana and the list goes on. It costs me 3.00 for a yummy hot lunch. I couldn’t possibly pack anything as good for that for a similar price. Not all school systems have good food, but in these times I am grateful that I can have a well balanced tasty lunch every day. I often use it as main meal and then can have a lighter dinner with no problem.
Not sure how single moms are managing with our insane food prices in Canada. Shameful inflation.

During the past couple decades, food in Canada, only cost consumers roughly 10% of their after tax income. Compare that to the 50’s and most of the 60’s when it took close to 30% of take home wage to buy the week’s grocery. We have enjoyed low grocery prices here in Canada, thanks in part to the tremendous advancements in agriculture production in both USA and Canada. Typical cow in 2023 can produce twice the volume of milk that a cow could produce during the 1970’s. Partly owing to better genetics in the dairy animals, but also great advancements in crop production. While 2 ton of corn per acre was considered a good crop in 1970, and $200.00 per ton was a excellent price. Today average yield is 4 tons per acre and the current price is just $245.00 per ton. Fertilizer back in 1970’s ran around $300.00 per ton, now in 2023 fertilizer cost $1,000.00 per ton. Is the price of food too high? Ask a farmer what he thinks !

Giant Tiger is great for price matching, we rely on it weekly. Stay away from any of the Weston family Empire stores aka Loblaws, Independent, Shoppers, the prices are truly criminal. Although we do get eggs, and milk discounted there on weekends. Real Canadian Superstore will still actually price match. I also noticed at Shoppers that the senior discount age was 55 yrs, now they have put it up to 65 yrs. ,hoping nobody would notice. If you see something obviously wildly overpriced, please don't buy it because this is what is keeping the prices sky high.

Farm Boy is doing a great job at the moment to keep the inflation down while offering high fresh quality products. I am very impressed with their hard work compared to Independents or else. Vegetables and meat are outstanding (Canadian quality wise). Look at their discounted items. They are really good. Trust me, I worked in retail in a previous life in Europe.

I love a good bargain and I have always been a frugal shopper. We have a small store in the States called Aldi- great prices consistently and fun gourmet cheeses and spreads. I primarily shop there and get the specials on meat etc from our local grocery store. Not a Walmart fan!!! Great content today!

Shoppers drug mart has gone crazy. Used to get my coffee, my creamer, butter, and other assorted items there...no more. My coffee is 19.99. My creamer is 4.99 and butter is $7. There is no way!
We go to Shoppers on Saturday and Sunday, their two day sale, eggs $3.49, butter $4.49 and milk cheap
Cut coupons and collect loyalty points.
Also, shop the pantry first. I don’t know how many doubles of things I’ve got in mine.
And cut down on waste. Difficult for one person households.

Unhealthy food here is the cheapest, whereas healthy foods are getting more expensive by the day. The quality of fresh foods seems to be deteriorating. Oftentimes some foods are not available or in lesser quantities. Climate change and the Ukraine war.
It's a challenge finding the better stuff at 'reasonable' prices. But I too have plenty of time to look around and compare. It's a new pastime!!

USA is the same as far as rising prices at the grocery store. A great deal on the chicken. We watch for sales, BOGO deals, and get a senior citizen discount one day a week at our grocery store. Our credit card gives us cash back and gas points for purchases.

Why would inflation affect your food Bill? Canada Pension Plan (CPP) rate increases are calculated once a year using the Consumer price index (CPI) All-Items Index. They come into effect each January. The amount of your CPP and OAS cheque increases to match the rate of inflation.
Same thing in the USA, which I get, but it doesn't work like that somehow when I go to buy things. So, I don't think someone is telling the truth in their figuring, or somewhere along the line.
Keep an eye on the price that comes up on the cash register when it is being scanned. If it is higher than the shelf price or sale price, you can get the first item FREE up to a $10 value. It’s called the Scanning Code of Practice and can be found on a sticker near where you pay. We catch mistakes at least monthly and score free food. Most grocery stores and Walmarts have it.

Can everyone that is a a retired couple post their monthly food costs. Our average cost in Eastern Canada for 2 is $850.00 Cdn We eat very well. We could cut this down. What is your location and average cost? We rarely eat out.
We will start it off Norm and I think we spend about $5-600 Can a month on food , more if we do a Costco shop . We look for bargains though in the flyers which saves us a lot of money 💰 Cheers 🙂🌺

Prices are indeed crazy! I just use my flyers and buy the loss leader items. Some times you can get the cream deal at giant tigers. Got two for25cents each.
When those burgers are on special. I'll buy two.

Did you just buy one chicken or the maximum amount allowed? Also, you are both English, and surely you know that the prices in the UK are totally out of control, some cannot even heat their homes, so thank goodness for small mercies here in Canada.

It depends where you are and what you buy. We have some of the best prices on fresh food. We can buy 2 pints of organic strawberries for $6 at our local market. Our relatives in CA pay more than that USD for 1 pint and that is where they come from

Guys, I love that period because it forces us to ensure we are not wasting and we need to be vey careful when we purchase groceries. My advice to everybody is to buy only fresh products strategically, when their prices come down, in season or in promotion. For more rafined products, such as cheese, wait for the 50% discounts on good quality brands and fill up your fridge with it (Cheeses get better with age). 🙂. For saving money, please learn to cook with left overs and second cuts. You will discover that you can make wonder out of things that some other would just dump by pure imbecility in the garbage bin. I am saying please learn because I know in North America people often waste their good food and buy industrial poisonous foods instead.
