Although the reason why that system is in the games is because it used to or still could be in Japan that unless you actually found the culprit or could shift blame inspite of the heavy bias against the defence atourney you were likely just to be called guilty. For a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world, their conviction rate is nigh impossible to overturn because the prosecution rarely ever pushes for the trial unless they're absolutely certain they can win. I've heard of plenty of cases where some petty crimes would even be dismissed just because the police didn't want to file them in. And yes, historically defense attorneys were seen as or close to burakuman as well because society generally branded those that underwent trial as criminals. Fortunately, it's gotten much better in our modern times (at least for defense attorneys), but that conviction rate is still as high as ever.

@@Mizore2008 Yeah, apparently for Phoenix, defending clients also means finding and indicting the true culprit within the same trial. It happens (almost) every single time.

Although the reason why that system is in the games is because it used to or still could be in Japan that unless you actually found the culprit or could shift blame inspite of the heavy bias against the defence atourney you were likely just to be called guilty. Which to them is one of the worst things since being a criminal would place someone just above burakuman (the lowest social caste that includes prostitutes, tanners, etc I think it's spelled as burakuman) which is also the reason persona 5 is themed that way.
@@Mizore2008 That's true, I've studied up on their judicial system, actually. For a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world, their conviction rate is nigh impossible to overturn because the prosecution rarely ever pushes for the trial unless they're absolutely certain they can win. I've heard of plenty of cases where some petty crimes would even be dismissed just because the police didn't want to file them in. And yes, historically defense attorneys were seen as or close to burakuman as well because society generally branded those that underwent trial as criminals. Fortunately, it's gotten much better in our modern times (at least for defense attorneys), but that conviction rate is still as high as ever.
