The REAL Reason VRChat is Magical

So, this is a short one. Extremely so, for me. I've actually been working on a (very) long video, that'll likely dwarf the original VRChat is Magical video. It's the video I really wanted to make about VRChat back when I was first starting out, but knew I couldn't just like... come out of the gate with it.
I wanted to get it done by the end of the year, but that's just not realistic. Luckily, this was another video I wanted to get out. It's not an essay, it's more of just... I dunno, a video blog post? This isn't the sort of thing I'm going to be posting a lot of, but I really just wanted to add all this in. As much as the academic, technical side of things is what interests me, there's no doubt that VRChat became more to me than just a strange curiosity this year.
Anyway, if you're reading the description to get that Discord server, here's an invite link: / discord
Also, I'd like to thank everyone who has subscribed or watches these. I honestly am blown away every time someone leaves a nice comment, or messages me on Discord, or whatever. Thanks for making my little corner of the internet so pleasant.

Sure, I get it. We had about the same thing happen in Second Life. 14 years ago a dozen scattered ppl found each other in SL with common interests. Podcasting was the greater draw and motorcycles an interest for some of us.
We got together a lot, spent too much time exploring, having parties, making stuff up, battling time zones, being friends.
We all benefited from our company. Years later some of us even traveled across the country to meet in RL. Those were an awesome, bizarre, and amazingly fun times too.
Today, life has changed things. We don't hardly ever meet up in SL. Some folks moved on. Some let work get in the way. Some died. We still have our island. Sometimes it's nice to just go there and stop thinking about the RL world for a bit.
Bottom line I know this to be true for all of us. Humans are better with community. Make it good!
    be well

Same for me, VRC saved me from going insane this year. And while I´m sometimes really sad that people get put off by the anime stuff from trying it - at the same time that´s exactly the reason why it´s still such a special place and community. It´s not abaout anime, furries or whatever. It´s about open minded people from all around the world, sharing the experience of being together. And I guess if it wasn´t putting so many people off, we would have a toxic community by now, like 99% of all games.

Totally feel what your saying. I've been on VRC since 2017 and was already pretty isolated in real life because of health reasons. I have a lot of friends on vrc, but a core group who feel like my chosen family. I even met some irl pre pandemic. I see my friends in real life really hit hard now with the social distancing, and I'm getting ready to ring in 2021 with a groups of friends in virtual NYC :)

even with all of the performance issues and bugs even with the updates that potentially break stuff and yet people still play vrchat. i usually get asked "why do you play vrchat? why do you have a lot of hours in it?" and it is one of the questions that really is just hard to answer/ you cannot really explain to someone why it's fun they just have to play it and like you said it will either click or it won't. i would have never have thought that i would be spending hundreds of dollars on vrchat just to be more immersed in it but yet here i am lol. the 2 videos that i have watched really made me understand why I keep playing vrchat and why it is magical. even if there was a game like vrchat that is superior in every way. it will never replace vrchat there really isn't any game like it

And yes totally agree this VRChat , has kept us all from going crazy with all the isolation .

Finding meaningful connection with complete strangers, exploring new frontiers and engaging with community-driven events/ creations are major factors in why I've stuck to games like World of Warcraft for so many years.
But where the conventional model provides these experiences merely as a byproduct of the core gameplay, VRChat is a universe built entirely around them.
    It's truly something special.

This is pretty much an explanation of the heart of video games for me. I remember everyone saying VRChat was a essentially a microcosm of the early 2000s internet when it started to gain its momentum, and this is dead on for online experiences of that time as well. I feel like I could swap out VRC for most of my MMOs and online games circa 2000 - 2006ish and have virtually the same reflections as you do here and that is a GOOD THING.

Before id just sit silently because i didnt want anyone to think im annoying but now i just go up to people and ask what the vibe is and usually ill get some story about what happened earlier in the world.
Vrchat has also made me pick up hobbies i never thought i would. I picked up and am currently learning blender and unity because no avatar quite *fit* as the one i truely wanted to present myself as- so i decided to make my own and have got so much support through it, its insane

I met and lost about 5 'friends' who turned out to be child predators, all previously offending and never caught. Then I realized that all of our mutual friends knew about this and didn't care or have an issue, then I found out the vast majority of vrchat is either predatory, or enabling disgusting situations between children and adults. -guy with 500 hours; had a severe and unhealthy attachment and addiction to this para-social world that detracts from your truly real social world. it doesn't perform the functions of real community whatsoever and relationships are more unstable than real-life acquaintances. it's an unhealthy para-social crutch. thinking you have friends or meaningful experiences on VRChat is a sad situation indeed--truly the world's most habitually lonely and drug-dependent users of a "video game" (more of a tool for grooming). makes nsfw discord look like a safe place for children by comparison. do not let people under 18 touch this game or you are contributing to some inevitable and disgusting perversion. anyone who has ever met someone they knew online knows that you do not know a person until you have met them in person, especially not the broken and perverted humans in that cesspit.
