This Insanely Detailed Painting Uncovered His Tragic Illness

- This piece is called Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck. Joris van der Paele was a wealthy canon of St Donatian Church in Bruges and the man who commissioned this painting. He was very rich but very unwell and thought he was going to die and so he hoped that in creating this painting he could keep his soul alive forever in heaven.
We’re placed in a church with Mary, baby Jesus, St. Donatian, St. George and Joris van der Paele (and a parakeet). Van der Paele appears to have been praying just moments ago. Perhaps the scene before us depicts a vision that came to the Canon during one of his prayer sessions. He likely created this painting also as a sort of medical certificate to excuse him from his duties at church that he was unable to carry out due to his ill health.
Jan van Eyck has injected so much detail in this painting that doctors today have been able to diagnose the canons exact ailments: polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. I hope you all love looking at all of the amazing detail in this painting like I do. Thanks for watching!

I like when artists paint themselves in reflections in their paintings. It’s a fun detail.
I really like that detail too
I like that too!
Iirc, Jan Van Eyck started that.
I didn't know I liked Paintings this much before I found this channel it's always great to look at the history behind each piece
I love this. I'm happy you enjoyed the video!

We are living in "Idiocracy"

The "cloth" that you describe as protecting the book is actually a leather cover that is folded around the book and extends beyond the book to form a bag-like structure to.protect it. It is also used to hang the book from a belt. You can see examples in museums and other paintings.
You know …. I’ve looked at this painting many times over the years and never saw Van Eyck’s self portrait in the reflection. His paintings never cease to amaze me.
...and these wonderful videos never cease to amaze ME.
I love your videos but I've never felt such a personal bond to a painting before. I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) 7 years ago, but thanks to modern steroid treatment I'm now free of both conditions. So I can empathise with the intense pain, fatigue and immobility that Joris van der Paele suffered every day. Of course he could afford the most expensive medical treatment of the day, but it was probably so useless he would have been better off without it.
I’m so sorry for the suffering you went through. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
This comment adds so much depth to my understanding of the video! Thank you so much indeed for sharing your experience!
Thats amazing. As someone who suffers from chronic pain l can guess how debilitating it was. I'm so glad you got relief and an actual cure.
van Eyck is more than a master artist; he was a freaking genius.
The detail is insane. The description was fabulous and insightful
One afternoon (about a year ago) I was watching one of your videos and my youngest kiddos came to join me. They ended up being hooked and are now so excited when they see copies of art that they recognize from your channel. It's like a scavenger hunt when we visit art museums or any place with hanging art.😊
That's wonderful.
Amazing!!!!!!
Most expensive doctor's note in history. Beautifully described!!
I love this narrator. Her dry humor and detailing the story behind the paintings is fascinating and entertaining. I'm so happy to have come across this channel.
KEEP ON POSTING, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!
Thank you!
agree
@@Zora3y I just found this channel and look forward to catching up with what will obviously be many fine posts!
As you point out - the detail is insane! The chainmail is so photo-realistic or should that be hyperrealistic? Once again a brilliant art lesson! 🙂
Thank you so much! I totally think you could say photorealistic! In fact it’s believed Jan van Eyck used a camera obscura (an ancestor of the camera) to create his super detailed masterpieces. Happy Saturday my friend!
This is absolutely one of the best channels on RUclips. You teach so easily, I’ve never been as interested in art as you’ve helped me be. Thank you x
She totaly does, but you have to keep focussed!
The details look like they’re in 3-D.
Stunning!
Brilliant. I love that this was detailed enough to diagnose a medical condition. I remember seeing one painting where the puckering on a woman's breast showed she had the early stages of breast cancer. Sadly, l can't remember which painting it was.
Rembrandt's Bathsheba
@@virginiarundle4005 Brilliant. Thanks very much.
While you're right about the dimpling (fascinating!), apparently it wasn't likely cancer, but a benign condition (thrombophlebitis), as Rembrandt 's model and muse lived ten years beyond when the painting was made.
Thank you for posting these videos!
You've made art history accessible for those of us who don't have the time, knowledge, or resources to properly dig in.
Painfully detailed is a good description-
You made me realize how much stories are reflected in art. Love your videos and I wish there was more content like this on RUclips.
The detail of this painting is amazing. Thanks for this post.
Mysterious illness, detailed painting, talented artist, and revolutionary medical knowledge surprisingly goes well with each other and also feel like a thriller mystery story.
I love the education that you give us. Thank you.
Every time I start one of your videos, I think, (again), "Wow, I love her voice!"
that self portrait detail is NUTS, jan van eyck u will always be famous
Great video, with ALL the details, and no unnecessary music!
Oh my goodness, the research and dedication to your videos is astounding. Thank you so much. I love your videos.
This painting is incredible.
These videos are so good ... I hope you're enjoying doing them!
Thankyou for mentioning the heraldry. It’s an obscure subject so often overlooked.
Van Eyck's paintings take my breath away.
It's a ring neck parakeet. They come from India. Not to be confused with budgerigars (budgies) parakeets that come from Australia. He painted the eye so detailed because they flash their pupils! It is very dramatic. They communicate a lot with their eyes.
The ring neck parakeet is quite common across southern England. They escaped from an aviary and took no advantage of having no natural predators.
I had a huge shock to wake one modern and see what a thought was a huge budgie staring in the window. We had recently moved south. I didn’t realised they were naturalised.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
By far, one of the coolest channels on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time and for your knowledge of art and history. What a great way to expose people to art. ❤
Eyck is truly talented-
All his art is so detailed and amazing!
What a gift, to be able to restore a man's reputation with a painting!
Love this channel. I've learned so much with each video. Not sure how long you research each painting, but you provide great insight that helps me to a deeper level of understanding. Thank you for this video. I look forward to each one.
Iused to not be into paintings , but gain more interest everytime I watch your videos. So many things are missed until you point them out ..please keep making the vids ❤️❤️
This is better than going to a museum. 😊
I love how you “break down” the paintings!
You are an amazing tour guide. Thank you. You help me see things, I would have easily missed.
I agree! There's so much I would miss, partially because I don't know what to look for!
I see colour, amazing work done by a brilliant artist, fine detail that I can't imagine how it was acheived, but the other details and story behind the art is incredibly interesting.
Thank you, great channel.
Saturday morning highlight Art Deco posted a new video!
Your videos are delightful.
I love this painting and I love Van Eyck. I’ve even seen it in person but I never knew it’s backstory so thank you for making this video!
Another briliant video! I can hardly wait for each one!
YYYYYEEEEESSSSS ART DECO YOU ROCK !!!!!!!!!!
no matter how advanced our society gets, we're still human.

I'm not an artist, but I love art. I love when you post because I feel like I am learning and you make it entertaining. I love to hear about the story of the painting, the meaning, the detail, the colors, the artist, etc...
Jan van Eyck is probably one of my favorite artists from this period. They had so many little 'easter eggs' and the paintings make you feel like you're almost in the painting and observing what's going on.
As always, insanely great value 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love this channel 🫶💖💖✨️✨️💖💖🫶
Please do more videos--a lot more. I learn so much about art from you, more than from a lifetime of reading and visiting museums.
That detail is incredible! Love your content!
Earlier today, I was jonesing for a new Art Deco video. You did not disappoint! ❤
Thank you for thinking of me! 😊
@@Art_DecoAbsolutely! You are one of my favorite RUclips channels.
Yes, the depiction of St. Paul does look like Shaggy 😂
Is love to go to a gallery and have a tour with you guiding me, maybe in headphones. It's amazing learning all the details with a tad of humour thrown in. Keep helping us understand classical art!!
Completely agree!
I love this channel so much every time. I love learning about paintings because of this channel.
I am so glad to see another video!
I LOVE UR CHANNEL SO MUCH PLS KEEP POSTING❤❤
Thank you!!! ❤️
The amount of intricate details are AWESOME!!
I became so excited when I saw you'd uploaded a new video! Great job! As always :)
Thank you for making me aware of art and its beauty, as well as the stories/details about it!! I've found myself seeking out details on paintings and observing them in a way that I'd never even notice before! Thank you!
I love your delivery and editing
He takes off his glasses because they are reading glasses. He doesn’t need them to look up at a person.
Otherwise, well done, Art Deco!
As you do, I find the details amazing. Jan van Eyck is a boss!
This is one of my favorite paintings. Good job on the presentation. I will say though, that many books from this time period had cloth attached to the cover, so that you could wrap the book in the cloth when not in use. They didn't survive the centuries though, many of those books were rebound later on.
What a treat it is to pop open the laptop and see that you have posted a new video!
This one was just as interesting as all the other ones you've made. I don't think I have seen this painting before. Or, at least not that I can remember very clearly. There are pieces of it that feels familiar, but I can't really discern if it's because I have seen this beautiful painting before or just me mixing up this one with some other piece of art from this time period/in this style. Nevertheless, it's a gorgeous painting and your commentary is just fantastic! This really is one of my absolute favorite channels on all of RUclips.
Without your commentary, I don't believe I would have noticed a contrast between the realistic depiction of Paele and the more idealized, or romantic, presentation of Mary and Baby Jesus. The detailed depiction of Paele really stands out to me now as somewhat apart from the the other figures.
This is like commissioned self-insert bible fanfiction.
“Omg Mary! You caught me right in the middle of reading about how pretty you are UwU”
I enjoy your videos so much! Thank you for creating them.
This channel is so good. Always an instant watch when I see a new vid is out. Keep up the great work!
The detail & quality of work is amazing.
You make every painting so informative & interesting. I thank you!👍✌️
I enjoy your videos so much that I actually recommended this channel just this morning, before I found this new one. Many thanks.
This painting is one of the most amazing things to behold. You can stare at it for hours and still discover new details. I went to Bruges last year and it was the most amazing experience I had in the city (and that means a lot). :)
Always such fascinating insights into these paintings of long ago.. Excellent research and narration.. always with a touch of humour! Perfect.. thank you! 👍👌🙋🏻♀️
Just found your channel and have binge watched almost all of it. The evolution of your description is just wonderful. Subscribed, as i need more! I wish my art history teacher had been even a fraction as good as you. I wouldn't have doodled the year away. Love it!
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos ❤❤❤
I always look forward to these videos ! I’ve learned so much about art and history ❤
1:29 also a parrot, it's an Indian ringneck parakeet to be specific,.which is a type of parrot, just like budgies/parakeets, just very smol parrots
Your videos inspire me to keep creating art!
I always enjoy the videos that you post. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! 😀💐💐💐
Fascinating!
Better information than I ever got in my art history classes!
Same! My art history teacher inspired a years worth of cartoons in my notebook :)
I have admired Jan van Eyck since I was a young art student standing in front of the spectacular
Arnolfini wedding portrait in the National Gallery, London.. (I loved your presentation of that portrait too!)
I wish we had more facts about this revolutionary genius! So little is known about Van Eyck's early life and neither the date nor place of his birth is documented.. and yet he has always been a huge inspiration to me! Thank you for this exceptional video.. 👏👌
The depiction of the carpet, the hanging behind the Virgin is extraordinary…the entire painting is a tour de force. Always fascinated by this painting even as a child…there’s so much to see. It has even more meaning since I’ve spent over 20 years disabled by multiple autoimmune and neurological disorders. The treatments are better than he would have had but still very mixed in the results.
Yawn
I love the historical context and the absolute examination of the metatexual meanings in the paintings.
With a nice dry humor.
Why is Mary so shady? She's looking at grandpa like he just shit himself 😭
🤣
😂😂😂
😂
Two things: Sorry, that's not cloth between his hands and the book. It looks more like a cloth bound book, so the cloth is integrated into the book cover. You take a "normal" book with wooden covers and it geht's sewn in into precious textile like silk.
Or it is even a girdle book, where you also add more material (leather or cloth) to the book covers, but you keep one side longer, so you can carry it. This version would also make the book to a personal prayer book and even add to the importance of it.
And second: at that time period glasses usually were reading glasses, so it's quite normal that he wouldn't use them to look at Mary. It's not the right type of lenses to look at things further away.
I came here to suggest this also! Medieval book binding is a whole other topic.
Van Eyck. Always a thumbs up!
You make paintings fun! Thank You!
This is perfection!
Keep up the great work! Love your videos
Your channel gives me & my fiancé life. My dear lovez pre-raephaelite works of Art. We simply adore your channel.
Your research is impeccable. It is very much appreciated. Thank you.
Ps. What are the dimensions? That adds greatly to the understanding of the whole piece.
A really graceful narration.
It is a superb video, as usual, and there are a couple of other things it may bear on Mr. van der Paele's health. He has swollen earlobes, which may mean nothing, but he also has a diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) or Frank’s sign, a deep crease or wrinkle extending to the earlobe. Some studies suggest this indicates a greater risk for coronary artery disease, which can cause heart attacks.
Then, there's clubbing of the fingers: Clubbing is a more distinct symptom primarily associated with chronic low oxygen levels in the blood. It often indicates problems with the lungs, heart, or digestive system. Clubbing usually happens because of long-lasting (chronic) low levels of oxygen in the blood, known as hypoxemia.
This can be due to various conditions, including:
Lung diseases, such as lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, or pulmonary fibrosis.
Heart diseases, especially those that result in congenital cyanotic heart disease (heart defects present at birth that result in poor blood oxygenation).
Gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
Liver disorders, such as cirrhosis.
Exophthalmos describes a condition where the eyeball protrudes from the eye socket, making it appear to bulge. It can affect one or both eyes and may occur due to problems with the thyroid gland. Exophthalmos is not a condition but a sign of a disorder. Commonly, it can signal a problem with the thyroid gland. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of exophthalmos.
And last but most important, that is one big butt, freekin parakeet. These birds are on the small side, averaging 7-8 inches, and weigh 22-32 grams when fully grown.
Incredible
For anyone visiting Bruges there's a whole museum dedicated the making of this painting. Really awesome
Thank you for this humorous analysis.
A winner once again! Was that “St.Donations” :-) church? I love the detail not only in the painting but equally in your excellent, intelligent yet humorous videos. Keep it up! Best wishes from and amateur Scottish artist.
Great job! You're spoiling us. And since you seem into detail this painting must be like Nirvana for you. Van Eyck surely was a master. Notice the compostion and color scheme. Even tho the BVM is in the center her muted colors give way to the real star of the show in dazzling white - the donor. And the angles go from NW to SE and - the donor. Even in piety the ego shines. Or, van Eyck knew how to please - the donor.
Thank you, very much another awesome video
van Eyck does some crazy stuff with that paint. I don't consider myself an art nerd, and don't know much about it (the reason I love these videos) and van Eyck's stuff just looks like you could reach out and touch the velvets and silks and the marble, etc The painted-on "engraving" and the entire frame not even being a real frame is just impressive and bonkers.
Great stuff!
Great video, I look forward to each one!
1:49 It is so fascinating how 3D those pearls look, like I can reach out and pluck one off! 🤯🤩
