This Insanely Detailed Painting Uncovered His Tragic Illness

  • This piece is called Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck. Joris van der Paele was a wealthy canon of St Donatian Church in Bruges and the man who commissioned this painting. He was very rich but very unwell and thought he was going to die and so he hoped that in creating this painting he could keep his soul alive forever in heaven.
We’re placed in a church with Mary, baby Jesus, St. Donatian, St. George and Joris van der Paele (and a parakeet). Van der Paele appears to have been praying just moments ago. Perhaps the scene before us depicts a vision that came to the Canon during one of his prayer sessions. He likely created this painting also as a sort of medical certificate to excuse him from his duties at church that he was unable to carry out due to his ill health.
Jan van Eyck has injected so much detail in this painting that doctors today have been able to diagnose the canons exact ailments: polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. I hope you all love looking at all of the amazing detail in this painting like I do. Thanks for watching!

The "cloth" that you describe as protecting the book is actually a leather cover that is folded around the book and extends beyond the book to form a bag-like structure to.protect it. It is also used to hang the book from a belt. You can see examples in museums and other paintings.

I love your videos but I've never felt such a personal bond to a painting before. I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) 7 years ago, but thanks to modern steroid treatment I'm now free of both conditions. So I can empathise with the intense pain, fatigue and immobility that Joris van der Paele suffered every day. Of course he could afford the most expensive medical treatment of the day, but it was probably so useless he would have been better off without it.

It's a ring neck parakeet. They come from India. Not to be confused with budgerigars (budgies) parakeets that come from Australia. He painted the eye so detailed because they flash their pupils! It is very dramatic. They communicate a lot with their eyes.

    • @dianeshelton9592
      @dianeshelton9592 27 дней назад +2

The ring neck parakeet is quite common across southern England. They escaped from an aviary and took no advantage of having no natural predators.
I had a huge shock to wake one modern and see what a thought was a huge budgie staring in the window. We had recently moved south. I didn’t realised they were naturalised.

I will say though, that many books from this time period had cloth attached to the cover, so that you could wrap the book in the cloth when not in use. They didn't survive the centuries though, many of those books were rebound later on.

This one was just as interesting as all the other ones you've made. I don't think I have seen this painting before. Or, at least not that I can remember very clearly. Two things: Sorry, that's not cloth between his hands and the book. It looks more like a cloth bound book, so the cloth is integrated into the book cover. You take a "normal" book with wooden covers and it geht's sewn in into precious textile like silk.
Or it is even a girdle book, where you also add more material (leather or cloth) to the book covers, but you keep one side longer, so you can carry it. This version would also make the book to a personal prayer book and even add to the importance of it.
And second: at that time period glasses usually were reading glasses, so it's quite normal that he wouldn't use them to look at Mary. It's not the right type of lenses to look at things further away.

It is a superb video, as usual, and there are a couple of other things it may bear on Mr. van der Paele's health. He has swollen earlobes, which may mean nothing, but he also has a diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) or Frank’s sign, a deep crease or wrinkle extending to the earlobe. Some studies suggest this indicates a greater risk for coronary artery disease, which can cause heart attacks.
Then, there's clubbing of the fingers: Clubbing is a more distinct symptom primarily associated with chronic low oxygen levels in the blood. It often indicates problems with the lungs, heart, or digestive system. Clubbing usually happens because of long-lasting (chronic) low levels of oxygen in the blood, known as hypoxemia.
This can be due to various conditions, including:
Lung diseases, such as lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, or pulmonary fibrosis.
Heart diseases, especially those that result in congenital cyanotic heart disease (heart defects present at birth that result in poor blood oxygenation).
Gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
    Liver disorders, such as cirrhosis.
Exophthalmos describes a condition where the eyeball protrudes from the eye socket, making it appear to bulge. It can affect one or both eyes and may occur due to problems with the thyroid gland. Exophthalmos is not a condition but a sign of a disorder. Commonly, it can signal a problem with the thyroid gland. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of exophthalmos.
And last but most important, that is one big butt, freekin parakeet. These birds are on the small side, averaging 7-8 inches, and weigh 22-32 grams when fully grown.

A winner once again! Was that “St.Donations” :-) church? I love the detail not only in the painting but equally in your excellent, intelligent yet humorous videos. Keep it up! Best wishes from and amateur Scottish artist.

Great job! You're spoiling us. And since you seem into detail this painting must be like Nirvana for you. Van Eyck surely was a master. Notice the compostion and color scheme. Even tho the BVM is in the center her muted colors give way to the real star of the show in dazzling white - the donor. And the angles go from NW to SE and - the donor. Even in piety the ego shines. Or, van Eyck knew how to please - the donor.

van Eyck does some crazy stuff with that paint. I don't consider myself an art nerd, and don't know much about it (the reason I love these videos) and van Eyck's stuff just looks like you could reach out and touch the velvets and silks and the marble, etc The painted-on "engraving" and the entire frame not even being a real frame is just impressive and bonkers.
