You need your long range fuel tanks. But all in good time. That being said, dang good video with the scenery, the history, nature and everything. We love being along for the ride. I hope you will show and share with us wonderful foods, meals, shops, and seaside goings on as you hop from place to place too. Very well done episode Andy.
The quality of your narrative is stunning!!!! This will make your channel very unique and is done so well. Great job Andy. I’m sure this all takes a bit of preparation to do this narrative. Looking forward to this kind of historical narrative in the future. So glad your sailing is finally taking its turn after so much work for so long!!!! Have fun!!!
I've motored around the sea around puffin and the menai striets many times before l had to sell my boat. It was emotional for me to see the area from the sea again. Thank you Andrew❤ Cliff.
Good to see Melody spread her sails at long last, even if it was because of an accident. Certainly not the way you'd like to test your mettle but it seems you both passed well! Absolutely chuffed to see you out in the wind after watching since midway through steel melody times. Well earned and deserved, soak it in.
The more I see it the more I think the roof is a perfect addition, well done and engineered to the good size, just love it. Nice place to just enjoy sailing without being out there in the wind. I loved seeing all the castles and can't believe how shallow the sea is and you have to follow the buoy's to prevent running into the sand. The engine troubles .. , good learning point as we say if it doesn't risk your life, and at least you could enjoy some sailing in these magnificent waters :-)
Hi Andy, good to see you and your family on the move. Bleeding the fuelsystem with the mechanical pump is really a pain.. I installed an electric fuelpump, HARDI 12V 125L/0,35 bar, this makes bleeding the system super easy. The good thing is that in normal conditions the mechanical liftpump will suck the diesel through this pump so you don't have to use it constantly, good backup though. I put the pump between tank and the primary fuelfilter so you can bleed the whole system if needed. All the best and enjoy your journey.
@Chris97302 I agree, tea is a Godsend. However , I've started drinking coffee again ,& I can't get enough of the stuff, bring on the Moccona caramel latte... Respect....!
I visited Beaumaris last year for the first time from Australia, my mum was born in Bangor, I still have family there, one runs a yellow boat around puffin island and the light house another is a retired volunteer coast guard, amazing place!
Hi Andy and Andy, there’s always some good excitement when you run out of diesel. Anyway you’re not hurt. That’s the main thing keep up the good work guys always enjoy them videos from Australia Thunder down under
Just before you said about how well the boat sails I was thinking "It looks like that boat sails really nicely, I bet Andy is pleased he made the hard decision to buy her" 😂. I am so chuffed for you guys. You are finally living your dream after so many years of hard work. I can't wait to see what comes next. ❤❤
Thanks Paul. We’re loving every minute. And yes she sails incredible well. I’m not an amazing sailor by any standards but she’s a forgiving girl thank goodness
Very unusual sights and views. Most people are showing us these exotics from the far side of the planet but this is every bit as good every bit as beautiful.
Lovely video forgotten how beautiful north Wales is when it I not raining. Running the engine out of fuel. We have all done it. Having someone else available to prime the injectors - good result😊
Yeah not the end of the world. Have had some folks telling me I’m putting my family at risk with my negligent incompetence but hey ho. I bet they wouldn’t say that to my face. The internet is a weird place eh
You worry to much about a problem no matter the cause. Sailing is always going to have problems no matter whos at fault its no big deal. Just have fun dont worry about what people might think.
Well done. Sailing is always fixing things and you sorted it out calmly and safely. Lesson learned and some super sailing on your beautiful vessel. Best wishes
Andy, this was a beautiful sail with beautiful scenery and the history of the area was amazing. All in all lesson learned in fuel usage when beating thru the currents. Thanks for sharing another great video 👍👍⛵️⛵️⛵️🥰
When we had engine failure just off the IoW, called up the Harbourmaster to advise and see if he could help us find a tow. (pre internet) Despite our protestations, the lifeboat was sent out on a drill to tow us in. A win win!
The land and geography is harsh looking but absolutely beautiful. Love to see you sailing and starting the next chapter of your journey. Last, you’ll appreciate that boat in big seas and wind. Boats are always a compromise between speed and comfort. Cheers!
If you haven’t already done so, fit an outboard motor priming bulb between the day tank and the primary (low pressure) fuel filter. Most times by cracking the low pressure and high pressure filter bleed screws, this will produce enough pressure simply by squeezing it while turning the engine over on the starter if necessary . It should bleed air out of the system without resorting to the lift pump or cracking the injectors. Also if the lift pump fails it may get you home.
As histody lovers, some of us less traveled love seeing and bearing descriptions of what were looking at. You sure surprised us with such beautiful descriptions us the history. Well done Andy and friend. Youll find Andy , there are some of us cruisers and then their are tbkse who only live to race. Only believing new is best! Just smile and know better! FWCS..⛵️⛵️
Your dead right, what a stupid mistake. Every day you should be checking all your fluids, fuel, oil etc and cooling system for the engine. You are the Captain and you are responsible. Great vid. 🍻
Navigation is an art, not science. Whilst modern technology has made a huge difference there is still the need for the Mk 1 Eyeball, common sense , and always to allow the unexpected to not take you by surprise. Great video keep it up
After a couple of years of watching your boat rebuilds this was hilarious. "Err, has anybody put diesel in it?" Shit happens! Re handling properties: critics can say what they want, you only have to look at Melody's hull to know it's going to be a fine sailor.
Nice to see you at the helm. I can’t remember if you have an auto pilot. Would have been a god send in your situation and you will need one for sure on long crossings.
Been away from it since electronics took over sailing but finding a range from your chart is a great way to sail unfamiliar waters. Fair wind and following seas to you...
Okay Andy, you poo-pooed in your chapeau running out of diesel. Flogging yourself once, or twice, was called for. Beyond that was overkill, which you are prone to do, to yourself. Cool it. Sail you beautiful boat. Be proud of what you and Melissa have accomplished. 😎
Andy great scenic sail. Yes you mentioned your tanks before and their size. I was thinking when Andy was pumping Diesel fuel into engine and it looked as though in Jacks area of Melody. Now won't it have a diesel odour lingering about in Jacks quarters ? Great you solved engine problem and nothing serious. Interesting about the waterways, buoys, currents ect in that part of Wales and how dangerous it could be not knowing. Safer conditions during daylight hours. Looking forward to next video
I think you should have a check when going sailing like they have on airliners as you said you had Andy with you fortunately but she sails beautifully you handled her brilliantly Andy 😊😊
Yes!!! Absolutely right. And I do. I did check the fuel. I just miscalculated how much we would need because we were Going against the tide. Entirely my mistake. I have a lot to learn
wOW! Don't drop anything over the side, you'll shatter that glass! Nice goin particularly with the teethin probs. You made it look so easy, I coulda done it with Olly's help. Nice job the other Andy. Kool seein Melissa and Olly., missed Cap'm Jack tho. Thanks m8s doin well, stay vertical Eh!
Having run out of fuel on a diesel-powered sailboat in the midst of a 40 knot gale, I feel your pain! S*** happens, you do your best and learn from the experience.
Definitely. First thing we did when the engine died was pull out the Jib but of course that’s terrible balance so we got the main up quickly then as well to balance the helm properly
Looking at the mainsheet....You will definately struggle in heavier air, even with th main reeefed, with only 1:4. Something to consider changing to at least 1:6 or to a winch if possible to fit there.
if you have a can of brake cleaner (longshot on a boat), or even hairspray, in an emergency a little squirt into the engine air intake to start your engine and bleed the fuel lines, better to little than to much to prevent runaway
No fuel is not a mistake, this is a basic rule of safety. The responsibility is huge. At any moment you must have an idea how much fuel in the tank. Also, be aware your boat is not save for weather above 6,5 Beaufort when the wind blowing in opposite of the tide: your rollfok / forestay sucks.

When you have worked out revs against fuel consumption you will soon have an estimate of litres per hour. I only have a 30 litre fuel tank that gives me a comfortable 15 hours before I had more fuel. Good edition would be engine hour gauge as I have.... if you haven't already got one. 😊
Dear Sailing Melody family. 👍👌👏 Sooo many nice images in this video. Stunning castles, wonderful nature = quite a nice documentation narrated by Captain Andy. Glad that you had a second Andy onboard. Please kindly allow me to ask some questions: Are the main Diesel tanks the ones you already put a lot of work in? Those with the extremely difficult to reach problem areas? Maybe putting in one or two bladder tanks are a possibility/solution to think about!? 2) I was definitely shocked 😱 by the video title. I instantly thought: Oh no, not an engine problem so soon after "launching". 3) Ocean Melody seems to sail quite nice and fast. Congratulations 🎉 As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all involved people.
More (frequent) use of map snippets would work wonders in explaining routing and planning........... a picture tells a thousand words etc. It would also go a long way in explaining dog leg round the island and channel markings.......... why you were piloting red bouy starboard at one point, and then Green bouy starboard later. PS: I'm not a sailor, as you may have guessed 😁
I loved the Cymry history. As an American I know very little of Wales. I always wonder why my forefathers left Wales and ended up in Alabama. I think it was simply for freedom and opportunity that America had to offer. Wales is beautiful, Alabama is named "The Beautiful" too though.
Andy, Don't 'Beat Yourself Up' .... Just one of those things to 'Top off the List' ..... :-) :-) :-) .... 'Lift-Pump' ..... The Possible reason why it was 'Not Working' ..... Could be that the 'Cam' was on or Close to the Top of the Cam Lobe and then the 'Hand Pump' will only have Very Limited Stroke .... When you get a Chance, May a good idea to paint a little Mark on the Pulley that shows Max Stroke on the Low Pressure Diesel Pump, i.e. The 'Back of the Can Lobe' .... This 'Stupid Thing' has caught out Many .... Including Myself ..... :-) :-) :-) Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ
Some boats have design issues your Bowman’s problem the prop comes out of the water if you motor in a big sea , Oyster 39 had the problem that under sail she drops her head and the rudder comes out of the water most people load under the aft bunk with cans of beer may be it was the intention , I could go on !
oppsie how did you run out of fuel so quick you had a full tank and some jerry cans when you left port, lucky you got enough wind to get use out of the sails
We didn’t run out. Like you say we had loads in Jerry cans. But I forgot to top up the tank so ran the main tank dry and then had a bit of a game getting the fuel through to the engine after we’d refilled from the Jerry can
@@SailingMelody oh forgot to top up day tank , surprised it had that much gunk and mess to clog the filter , glad you got it sorted anyway and it wasn't anything to serious
you are not the first and wont be the last to have fuel issues, I once managed 2 miles with the fuel tap still turned off before my boat stopped, just as I arrived at a bridge.
@@SailingMelody if you remember one thing, next time you will forget something different, just write a pre departure checklist, and add to it every time you forget something, I only have a 40 litre tank (good for 40 hours cruising with my little engine, yet I have manager to fit 35 litres into it more than once. (I do carry another 20 litres for topping up.)
I did check before casting off. I had two thirds of a tank. That wasn’t the issue. The issue was I underestimated how much I would need due to punching the tide so I neglected to top up half way through
Hahaha well I have a lot to learn. It was a safe day and I learned some stuff about myself and some stuff about the boat so I call that a success. We’re several weeks ahead in videos and boat work so I’ve already addressed a LOT of the issues I unearthed doing this shakedown. Fuel tank, entire fuel system, some rigging elements and a whole bunch of other stuff coming up in the next few episodes
Brain Farts Happen tothe best of us, and your systems need to be designed with KISS principles counter Brain Fart measures, such as having an accurite Fuel Guage clustered with the engine temperature and oil pressure gusges, along with Side deck level Fuel Fillers, combined witj 10 ft hose jiggle Siphons, so fuel container can easily be slid next to the fuel filler cap. When the Fuel Gusge Hits the half Tank level, Siphon a Container full into the tank - with anti zdiesel Bug additive in it remember, plus if it is low Sulphur diesel Fuel, make sure there is enough lubricant in it, so you don’t blow up the injector pump due to the lack of lubrication - synthetic Two Stroke engine oil is a brilliant additive, as a little goes a very long way.. Good Luck. Bob in Wales. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍
PS. topping upat the half tank level, helps avoid disturbing any sediment at the bottom of the tank, which your normal fuel filter setup should be rapping, and easily cleared anyway ? Jiggle Siphons can be obtained with shorter tubes than 10ft, but shorter usually means they're a right PITA to use, as it can be areal struggle getting them into the feed pipe to the Tank. It's worth colour coding the Siphons for Diesel, Water, and Petrol, and storing themseparately so you don't get them mixed up. Luckily they don't take up much space. Bob🤔🌟🌟🌟👍.
Somewhat misleading that you can't continue a passage while sailing single handed and fixing the problem yourself. Of course this would require, in my book, d definitely essential piece of equipment, and one that I wouldn't leave shore without, - some form of self steering, which for me was a windvane - allowing you to continue your passage while fixing your problem and therefore not having to head out to sea, hove to, etc. Wouldn't ever dream of passage making without one.
Never said you couldn't just said on this passage you'd have to go further out to sea 😁 auto pilot currently being fixed and we are looking forward to playing with our hydrovane soon

Reefing lines on the short list? Just in case that’s your only power and wind picks up. Looked like a beautiful day for a sail!
Yes!!!!
Andy if you come to the USA. U will encounter the narrow channels in the intercostal waterway. From New Jersey to Florida
I learnt as a child that you never take out a sailboat without a sail ready to deploy . Usually a headsail as they can be raised and doused faster .
Definitely.

So, in the event, the engine did not fail at all, except in the sense it failed to do the impossible.😉⛵️
Well. It failed to run on air. So “engine failure” was true. And “we ran out of fuel” whilst also true is a lot less of shop window headline
with a ketch leave the mizzen up and then its easy to pull the head sail out if needed in an emrgency.. guess how i know lol
Good shout
You're in the home port marina as the Ship Happens crew. Are you going to visit?
Yes we have seen them a couple of times, they were at our wedding 😀
Head for the palm trees and hot days andy
There is some dust on the sensor of your camera.
I know 🤦♂️ so sorry. I did clean it afterwards. I was so annoyed cos it ruined some lovely clips which I ended up not using
King Edward had ordered alligators for the Beaumaris moat but alas they never arrived...
Wow is that right. Honestly I never knew that. Fascinating
Why is the text on your shirt backwards? Great video though with amazing drone shots! 😊
Thank you. It says “is my boat ok” but upside down
You must be twin brothers, no line out at sea for fish
We missed a trick there actually we should have shouldn’t we
She appears to be sailing beautifully. Please paint that bit of grey deck infront of helm. Just bugs me. Sorry silly.
Bugs us too but we have more important things at the moment but will be done soon 🙂
did not check fuel level before casting off, oh dear, that could have proved very serious with differing weather conditions
I did check before casting off. I had two thirds of a tank. That wasn’t the issue. The issue was I underestimated how much I would need due to punching the tide so I neglected to top up half way through
The Ole diesel bug got you. Or the lack thereof.
🙈
looks a bit of a cluster tbh.
If you've watched Sam Holmes, the first thing he does on entering a marina is refuel and fill up the water tanks. Just saying...
Is this what the channel is about Andy … running out of fuel and reading from a guide book … your going backwards
🤣
👍🏽
Good it is a sailing yacht and not a motoryacht😅
You’re not wrong. And she sails beautifully
Bob🤔🌟🌟🌟👍.
I don`t wish you any harm and hope you as a family really make a go of all this, But I can't believe you ran out of fuel, really!...
A very stupid mistake yes, things are being put in place to prevent this in the future
Never said you couldn't just said on this passage you'd have to go further out to sea 😁 auto pilot currently being fixed and we are looking forward to playing with our hydrovane soon
great to see her under sail and you face
not broke till you can't fix it.
That’s true actually
