I just bought a used bass and would like to learn how to play. I don't understand a word of what Janek is saying but I really enjoy hearing about the diversity of how chords can be played. He sounds like a humble genius talking about complicated things here.
this is amazing eye opening stuff. when I started playing back in 72 we never thought of playing chords on bass. Maybe an occasional double stop. But the possiblities with closed chords and inversions makes the possibilities endless for expression on bass guitar. Id love to see even more than inversions and go into chord voicings for bass. This is remarkable as one could truly compose more than just a funky bass line but also complex harmony on bass now like a piano or guitar.
Wow, THANKS Janek. I've an older Brian Moore 5-string I don't play as much anymore. It needs fresh strings and I'm going with E-C, my brother! Can't wait to see your book. Peace...
It's just wonderful you're so willing to share all this diverse passion and skill. As mentioned in an earlier comment to an earlier vlog I am re-inventing my musical self after tripping over the fact ~despite playing multi-instruments around a lot finally making a respectable living doing it~ I still really never "owned" my music let alone was in love with it Even though I was sought-after a lot on the professional scene and studied with a few luminaries [tho never for long .. attitude problem?] . Even did a few sessions with the iconic Wrecking Crew at Gold Star as very young dude [dating m'slf oops], actually with a few recorded songs played by those guys [and gal]. Then hung up the music for too many years, for multimedia and 'business' , fingers stiffened up, thought it was over with...and, deeply sad about it. That's now reversed, found the 'true muse' and the real stuff that music is made of and for. So I wanna commend you for the great work you're doing it and unselfishly, too. [That part
Forgive replying to m'slf... Paused the vlog, you're demonstrating this technique around what I consider to be one of the probly 10 most gorgeous melodies and chords ever written. Despite being hacked on by some musicians as perhaps outdated and trite, "All the things you are" could even be thot of as a devotional song, stretching it a tad. But not much. I refer to such songs as 'UpLife' songs and am working on a musical theater show to leverage this concept [UpLife.us, temp. site] and could easily branch out to a major motion pic and franchise. The aim? To raise collective consciousness thru music fostering a better world. Only thing I've come to believe can do it...we've tried everything else. Anyways, great taste in songs. Back to th`vlog.
Hey Janek, can you talk about your harmonic approach when you're blowing over diminished chords? are there shapes that you gravitate towards like major and minor triads over them? thank you.
This will sound like I'm 14 and just starting out, but will the book feature chord charts (or tabulature?) of the various voicings etc.? I know that I for one appreciate when I can see the preferred fingering of the chords on bass/guitar - at least when I'm trying out new stuff. Just a thought :)
Erik Arkö not a janek book owner yet, but I could only assume that there will be fingerings. By the way, I just recently turned 15. I first picked up bass when I was about 7. I only say that because as somebody from that age group and likewise somebody who has been playing for about 8 years, I wanted to say that I still ask those questions, and I've been a bass player for almost as long as I can remember. Also, I appreciate when people acknowledge my age group as anything but a bunch of phone obsessed zombies. ;)
It wasn't intended as an insult to your age group, it was more a way of saying that I felt like a n00b when asking for chord charts ;) I was 14 when I started out, hence the age I wrote :)
I was pretty sure you weren't trying to, I was just thanking you for not doing what pretty much all of my parents' friends do to me. No matter what, though, bass at any age is fantastic. By the way, I checked out a couple of videos of yours. Very cool, man! One question though: how is the Billy Sheehan bass? I've been meaning to look at one, but none of the music shops where I live have them right now.
Thanks dude! :) The Yamaha Attitude is an AMAZING P-bass! It's super sturdy and sounds killer in everything from jazz and motown to slap and progressive metal! Couldn't be happier with it! :)
Standard tuning for five string bass is BEADG. I would argue that most bass players tune accordingly. For instructional purposes, learning is best facilitated by demonstrating the common, rather than pushing individual preferences for whatever reason. Otherwise, the confusion can frustrate beginner or intermediate students looking for consistent clarity.👎
Yes. Two in fact! But I recommend either starting with Vol 1, or getting the bundle and working through both in order: janekgwizdala.com/store/p/chordal-harmony-volume-1 and janekgwizdala.com/store/p/chordalharmonybundle

Of course we didn't have five string basses then with a high C string. That high C string helps a lot with achieving those sweet chords.
I play four string and play plenty of sweet chords. No excuses lol
You are looking super fit man, really interesting to see after watching some of your older videos, keep it up!

You’ve earned my RESPECT brother,If you have a book coming out illl definitely be buying it.
I'd love to play like Janek!

Janek always says to learn vocabulary and never relies on using scales or such things.
This ep is awesome!!!!!
Amazing Janek!! Thank you... From Brazil.

Does anyone know Janek's camera setup?
Thnx for this great vlog!
i like your couch. where did you get it? not a troll. great/comfy idea for practicing bass in my room. also, great vid.
This may seem dumb, but is that bass set up with a low E string vs a low B? I've never seen a 5 string bass with this string setup.
Yup, sorry if it's late but I figured I'd answer for future visitors anyway lol
Yes, his bass is string E to C. Like a 6 string minus the low B.

@@bustabass9025 Yeah, I was a little confused.
do you have a book on inversion Janek?
Yes. Two in fact! But I recommend either starting with Vol 1, or getting the bundle and working through both in order: janekgwizdala.com/store/p/chordal-harmony-volume-1 and janekgwizdala.com/store/p/chordalharmonybundle
Very helpful thanks!
fantastic what gauge strings are you using if you don't mind thank you
Still waiting...:(
Does anyone make those 5 string E-C sets of strings?
I don't think so. I usually buy a four string set and then a single C string.
Check out Melvin Gibbs for cool chords and harmony.
Now that were a lot of notes ... :D
morning!
Is it possible to impress any decent guitar player with all those bass chords? You'll know for certain when they wrap their guitar around your head!
Yeh exactly, you’re the bass player, play the fkn bass line
christ all mighty and this vid he is being silent just music, this guy could talk underwater, he never stops talking lol
this video is just about the book right.? u're talking too fast and rushing through things. slow down.
