In the 70's and 80"s my dad ran a meter lab for a large electronics company. I worked there for 6 years after high school doing large transformer testing and assembly and eventually moving into the repair department, linear and switch mode. They had every meter known, and replacement parts, I remember those batteries, (and many other strange configurations) they had even cobbled together charging stations for them, as they produced regulated power supplies anyway. Unfortunately I want to be a car mechanic and was not that into it, sigh. They would regularly scrap meters and scopes all the time. Why oh why did I not hoard them all. youth...

I've purchased parts from Anchor quite a few times. They have a great selection of various items. Glad that they are still around. More and more places like them have been going away, All Electronics being the latest.

This seems like a device from a transitional period. "The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters." I mean. It's a small monster. But it's weird.

What a nice multimeter. Simpson is legendary for their needle meters, but they can also make a beautifully built digital one.

I can't wait for part 2. At a hamfest last week I picked up a Fluke 8040A which is very similar. It runs off 4 C cells or a wall wart. I haven't tested it yet. I also picked up a Heath Capacitestor IT-22 which might well be faulty!

I have two of the 471s. Decent meter. I had no idea a 471-2 even existed.

Our 80s scope has an integrated multi-meter on top which has a similar vibe. We use it with kid gloves; generally using cheap, portable modern multi-meters to avoid destroying good vintage equipment.
    Tetronix and others did this.

If it was designed to be used with the charger plugged in it should be fine at 7.5V. The charger supplies .75W. When you ran it at 5V it drew .65W

I noticed the 5v he was giving it, too... Could explain the strange readings. I'll have to watch the rest of the video now to find out. 😸

I remember the Simpsom 360 digital's. There were like a fat 260 and had a small analog indicator in the center. If I remember right they were a bit expensive too. Oh no, tear drop tantalum cap's ? There notorious for shorting out after this long.😃

It appears that your meter is missing the two cardboard tubes that the 4 AA nicad batteries would be slipped into and then installed in the meter.

Since the music at the end of the video is reminiscent of the Jeopardy Thinking music do I need to play it over and over again until part 2 of this series is released?

Hello, I have a question related to circuits and "starter kits." Recently, I acquired "The Art of Electronics" (3rd ed.), but I don't have any physical electronics components to practice with. I've been enjoying your videos, and I purchased "The Art of Electronics" based on your recommendation. With that said, could you please recommend a starter kit that you think would be helpful for someone like me? Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Mine is not reading correctly like yours. I suspect the ICL but I got sidetracked by an HP6920B meter calibrator I just received. Lol. ADHD. 😂

Hello. We don't know each other however My name is Eric from South Carolina. I'm not very tech savvy but I know good tools when I see them. I have this this exact meter Never been used with original manuals including the warning tag regarding the batteries and of course the leather case and test leads. It's truly a time capsule and a piece of American history. I would like to sell this piece so I'm reaching out

How weird is this. I just bought 2 of these off eBay as a restoration project . Must be another glitch in the matrix. Seriously weird.

The meter draws 130mA, as opposed to 1.3A, right?
