In this edition of What Went Wrong, we take a look at the hugely popular and critically acclaimed series Ed Edd n Eddy. One of my favourite Cartoon shows from Cartoon Network, we explore the aspects that made it great, and the later aspects that caused it to fall from grace.

I never realized until adulthood how ironic it is that Rolf is the kid most from an entirely different and strange world, but Kevin, the neighborhood jerk, accepts Rolf as his friend the most.
Honestly, I can see why. Rolf is probably the least likely to be intimidated by Kevin and is 100% unapologetically himself. I can see Kevin being able to respect that. He's really cool.
@@ValkyrieCain123 beautiful perspective and well said. I feel this.
I like kevin
Honestly, Kevin isn't really that much of a jerk. He's nice to Sarah when he doesn't have to be, shares free jawbreakers with the other kids, and even stands up for the other kids when Eddy is being an ass. Kevin even has semi-regular non-hostile interactions with Double-D, and tolerates Jonny the most out of the non-Nazz kids.

I feel pretty insulted by him calling Edd a racist skinhead on multiple occasions. I mean I know he was trying to joke about things, but that was kind of low.
You may not agree, but the later seasons did have a drop in quality, and the show would go on if it wasn't the case.
@@Golemoid yeah, and that could have been the death of the memory of one of the most highly regarded shows to ever grace CN. sometimes things end when they should have and that includes both ups and downs.

Honestly, I think the colors being darker in Season 5 make perfect sense, since it is set in Fall instead of Summer, and the bright colors become darker as Fall becomes more prevalent.
Yes!!
I was thinking the same. The darker colors gave that environment more depth and made it feel like the season had changed.
Along with the intro song for every episode which became a little bit longer.
That makes sense
Eh. I agree with the technicality of this point but there was certainly a clear disconnect in the "feel" even if just ever so slight. I could be wrong but felt like recess may of done similar? Or the rugrats? And felt the same way if memory serves me right

TPS Platinum some cultures are not something to celebrate or appreciate.
I still couldn't hear the line, what did he say?
Yeah agreed I mean having problems with some elements of a culture doesn't mean you are racist and it doesn't mean you are truly against a culture ... Granted its somewhat understandable for there is a nice chunk of overlap when dealing with racism and being against/hating a culture ..thus its easy enough for some to confuse racism and hating a culture with just having some problems related to afew cultural elements but in truth not having any truly racist or any truly cultural hate in regards to something..
Yeah I guess we'd be racists too against arranged marriages between cousins, right? "Curse diverse cultures."
@@brettbarnett3465 I don't think it's cultures per say, but some *aspects* of cultures. I'm Mexican and I love my culture BUT parts of it such as chicken fighting is terible because animal abuse is terrible. It's the animal abuse that's bad and how it's accepted that's bad, not the WHOLE culture itself. Because there's nothing bad about celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. So to say the *whole culture* is bad is racist.

Johnny Test was pretty lit, too.
Ed, Edd and Eddy was just one of those shows that didn’t matter what season it was or what episode. You could just turn it on and start watching. And they would do marathons too. I thought exactly the same thing. I did not even know there was a new ''Ed, Edd, n Eddy''.
The art and animation only got better and better and that's the main appeal for me. Some people say the school episodes are bad but eh, I still like them. EDIT: Ok yeah I do agree the colors got worse with the switch to digital, but everything else only improved. The designs only got more charming and the movement more elaborate and lively. It's not the best switch to digital but they could've done far, FAR worse.
@@vic3451 I'd argue it kinda loses some appeal around the time they introduce the school element
I liked the series from start to finish. Funny to the last episode, imo
Yeah, I feel the same
This was a rare occasion where a tv series, let alone a cartoon series doesn’t go downhill after so many seasons. It couldn’t have been a more perfect of a show.
That's because it stayed creator-driven from start to finish. Danny Antonucci was always in control.
king of the hill...that show somehow was always good...i can't find a bad season....maybe cause its based so much on real life observational humor which is always funny ..I don't know...by not being surreal king of the hill nailed what current simpsons does not and bob's burgers one day won't...lasting universal impact humor..it will be funny 20 years from now it was funny 20 years ago it is funny now...its a universal truth...ed edd and eddy for 5 seasons is similar..its funny then now and will be funny in the future

Asmosis Jones king of the hill is so under rated
That episode where they broke reality is probably my favorite episode of any cartoon. Only other thing that comes to mind is spongebob's rock bottom.
Yeah that is one of my most vividly remembered episodes
SpongeBob's rock bottom is the most frustrating episode in cartoon history. My man's just wanted to get home 😭.
Is that the one where they took the black border off of Jimmy and he turned to liquid, flowing into the storm drain?
Chowder had episodes like this
yea every time i saw spongebob's rock bottom I always counted the buses he missed 14 plus 1 first from the start
What's beautifully ironic is how the newer episodes involving school feels the most nostalgic for me. Something about the fresh start, rainy autumn mornings, etc.
"get it, SNOWJOB?"
how the hell did they get away with that one?
The made a joke about a sextant in the movie too
There was also the porno magazine jokes
There were also some super surprising stuff on the sticky notes in double D's house, for example, in his bathroom, there's one that says Edward, don't touch yourself
The amount of stuff they got away with in this show, especially with the kanker sisters and the whole neighborhoods reaction to Nazz,it makes you wonder how it even came to be
It was a diffrent time.
Honestly, with their friendship dynamic changing, it seemed realistic. A lot of friend groups have roles in the beginning and when each person grows/changes, it makes things weird. I think that part was ok.
I liked cartoons with dynamics like that. Code Lyoko, Fosters Home, All of them seemed realistic and it was easy to picture yourself in the main group and it was memorable too.
Remember everyone that your favorite childhood cartoon show only happened because of a dare, let that sink in. God bless the person who dared Danny Antonucci into doing a kids show. Seriously, this show was my childhood.

I always found Edd's development to be kind of natural, as he starts widening his social network and distancing himself from Eddy. We see him interacting with other kids more and more, and at some point even Kevin likes talking to him, as he smiles when gretting Edd. Him trying to stand for himself was a massive step forward in his character.
Ed, however, got the short end of the stick. My guy deserved better.

@Sexy Uchiha do you even know what simp means?
@Sexy Uchiha that's not right at all... It means, someone, usually a man. Who does way too much for someone they have an attraction to with nothing in return from the other party.
Ex: Dylan the neckbeard sinking $200 into one of Pokimane's streams without her even reacting.
Having an attraction to a certain group of people doesn't make someone a simp.
There was a scene where Ed, Edd, and Eddy where they jump over the fence and how they went through the fence explains their personalities on the nose.
Eddy hopping over the fence indicates his willingness to "cheat" the system, or to take a shortcut. Much like his schemes, it might end up being more work, but in his mind, cheating is the best way to get ahead.
Edd goes the neat and logical way, he's straight forward. BUT, note that he closes the gate behind him rather than leaving it open. He's incredibly meticulous and even if it's more convenient to leave it open for anyone coming in behind him, he has to leave things neat, tidy and as he found them.
Ed is also is straight forward, he in fact is using the MOST direct route. But this route is one no one else would consider because it seems completely nonsensical. Which sums him up pretty well. The fact that it works for him is also fun to note. In general his earnestness and determination carries him through situations that most people would be stopped by.

I think the last seaaon was more realistic, since childhood friends not always last, and there's bound to be frictions and fights even between the closest friends.
Double D is by far got the best glow-up, standing up by himself and making other friends, even befriending Kevin.
I'm not saying it was flawless (it did got a tad gross) but it wasn't as bad. Also, Sarah was super spoiled but she was also a strong friend who always stood up for Jimmy.
I think it's interesting how Jimmy, a boy, is the kid she is the closest to instead of other girls.
@Justice it's not not weird cause dude is more feminine than most of the girls there. There's only 2 lol.
and that's how you end a series, character development, which got even stronger in the movie, i'm glad the Eds got their happy ending after 130 episodes, 4 specials, and a movie.
Ed Edd n Eddy had possibly the best sound effects of any animated show. Sure, a lot of them didn't really fit, but that was part of the charm of it. And to my knowledge, this show is the only case with dedicated fans just to add its sound effects to other shows or games

I always laughed like hell at them! hahahah

I didn’t realize he was literally grounded till i was in college and someone pointed it out 🤦🏽♀️
Wait..
Fuck.
Honestly I think Edd still stuck with Ed and Eddy because. . . When you're a kid, it's hard to let go of friendships, even if you've basically outgrown them. It's hard to even KNOW you've outgrown them. I was long-time friends of some people that, in retrospect, I should have cut ties with MUCH sooner because we had just grown to be much different people. (And they were honestly kinda toxic but anyways.) There's this narrative that friendships should last forever and they only end if someone moves away, or someone did something bad that ended the friendship. In reality, most friends just. . . Drift apart. The individuals grow in different ways and they no longer fit together like they once did.
I went off on a tangent for a bit, but it honestly makes sense to me that Edd would still stick around Ed and Eddy even after becoming less anxious and more sociable.
Yikes I know this feeling all too well
yeah exactly
A girl ended the best friendship I had as a kid growing up. She had a crush on me. I was young. Too into Pokémon cards, game consoles, and sports to think about girls like that. Along came one girl who matured first and had a huge crush on me. I was too young for love. I felt shy and timid around her. I’d just choke. eventually she got over me and asked my friend out. I liked her she would write our names in the playground on her hands and notebook. One night my best friend asked for my permission to ask her out. I still remember like if it was yesterday. I never made a move she got over me and went after him. After that boom bf gone. They’re still together to this day. They have one kid that she had back in 8th grade. Crazy how life passed you by quick. One quick choice and that could of been my ass with a grown ass kid during these quarantine BS ass covid times. Dodge the bullet on that one.
Nobody gives a care about the fate of labor as long as they can get their instant gratification.
Thank you.
Actually... I find the new personalities of the characters to be very realistic. They show that people grow and change and not always for the better. Eddy was constantly being enabled and supported by two people he could manipulate- One who didn't know better, and one who lacked the spine to refuse. But Edd finally started gaining some self confidence, and is more resistant to Eddy's schemes. Ed, for his part, never really got any of the help he clearly needed, and is starting to break down from the abuse he suffers from basically everyone, from Eddy, to the other kids, to his family. Eddy is losing his two pawns, and he is reacting like a petty tyrant who is losing his grip, which only alienates everyone more, and feeds into a vicious cycle. As for why Edd still hangs out with him? That too is realistic. Eddy is toxic, but he is still Edd's friend, and Edd still wants to support his friend even though he can clearly see Eddy is becoming worse. Maybe he thinks he can fix him if he sticks around and tries to change him, or he fears what will happen if he completely detaches from him. Essentially, Edd is sticking around out of pity. Ed sticks around because he has no one else, of course, and has latched onto Eddy emotionally. Its every bit the evolution of an utterly toxic friend group on the verge of a collapse.
And then the Big Picture Show happened and they all pushed through their traumas, coming out the other side as better people. Antonucci managed to defy even his own downer-ending desires and give a happy ending to a show that embodied much of our childhoods.
Damn I guess you’re right, the whole show wore on the characters, but this is one of the few instances where this would make sense
Edd I think liked the fact that Eddy admired his brains and saw him as helpful which made it easier for him to be himself around him when normally with the other kids he'd get flustered and retreat into his shell a bit. The two of them do have a laugh together and have fun doing what they do which is why he sticks around Eddy.
Like sure Double D probably had the least amount of antagonistic behaviour aimed towards him by the other kids. Eddy had pretty much every kid dislike him or at least not really care much for him, Ed was seen as a bit weird for his movie obsessions and kids seeing him as a bit gross though ultimately harmless but because they were friends with Sarah they didn't really make an effort to befriend him since Sarah was so aggressive towards him. Double D was just really book smart and socially awkward that most kids just didn't get what his deal was. However he at least found meaninginful connection with the other Ed's so that would be hard for him to really let go since he could actually be himself around them. Sure neither of them really got his more nerdy tangents either but they still liked hanging around with him and include him rather than ignore him completely.
To add on with at least Eddy's character, Eddy throughout the series showed that if he craved anything as much as money, it was the attention from all the other kids on the Cu-De-Sac because he wanted to be as cool as his brother was in his mind until the end of the movie where he realized that his brother wasn't exactly as cool as he thought before and then became more of his own person.
With Ed and Edd, there were multiple examples that whenever they weren't directly involved with one of Eddy's schemes, the rest of the Cu-De-Sac were at least okay enough with them that they would hold a conversation or even act friendly until something bad happened. Edd more than Ed mainly due to his brain and giving others advice when asked and I only remember Ed having a more friendly relationship towards Rolf while other kids mostly avoided him if they could.
Nah, that's bullshit. The characters changed because the writing got lazy. You're reaching to make it seem like this was a message. Which ended up being the problem with the last movie. Trying to be complicated and "deep" without the material.

One thing i remember about the show
was that Ed got stupider as the seasons went on
He went from being a lovable goofball who loved horror movies. and talked in full sentences
To not even talk in full sentences
But the Cartoon is still a 10/10
It’s the same with Johnny he got more stupid as the show progressed and edd mentioned it
To be fair I think he sustained a lot of brain damage throughout the course of the show.
I noticed that in season 5 back when it was aired on CN.
yeah ed in season 1 is actually coherent mostly and snarky and sounds more surfer skateboard beach type guy with an actual iq...its interesting to see how he evolved the way homer did into a idiot
Almost lost me there for a moment.
The way I look at it is like this:
Seasons 1-4: really great and fantastic episodes overall.
Season 5: Some great moments in a lot of episodes.
I could tell even as a kid that the last season dropped in quality, but I was still able to enjoy it for the most part.
Same.
Which was a perfect time for Danny to pull the plug. Probably the one thing Cartoon Network has done well was NOT allowing their greed to punish a show beyond it's quality
Ed was actually smart in seasons 1-4
Season 5 had better animation.
I think what people fail to understand is a show doesn't become unwatchable or even bad just because the quality degrades a little after several years of runtime. Ed Edd N Eddie was incredibly good from start to finish BUT it did go from 'great instant classic' to 'really good animated series' from the first to last seasons.
Nothing went "wrong" it just lasted a very long time and when you were gold for so long it was only a matter of time before it started to run out of gas. Kudos to Antonucci to know when to call it a series instead of letting it turn into modern SpongeBob/Family Guy.
Season 4 & 5 disagree
@@jenisia3600 I liked them just as well. Sure there was a quality drop, but the Edd Boy's will always hold a place in my heart.

I think Eddy getting more aggressive and dick-ish played well into the movie and his relationship with his brother as time goes on he becomes closer and closer to a mirror of what became of his brother, yet I think the movie also addressed and fixed that issue by him showing he just kind of wanted to be accepted and respected but didn't know how to properly and maturely go about it.

He relied on him for years and became friends, but as they changed and developed, he didn't want to ditch his friend. Was the friendship toxic? Very much so in seasons 4-5, but it can be hard to end a toxic friendship, especially for someone as empathetic as Double D.
plus i think Double D was worried what would happen to Ed and Eddy if he stopped being the voice of reason.

Ed took a similar evolution of his character as Patrick from Spongebob, except Patrick was waaaaaaay worse.
ED way better than Patrick
@@GoatjuanProduction agree. Patrick became stupider and mean....
Eh I don’t see it that way because Ed never got stupider in my opinion, he pretty much stayed the same. Patrick got dumb to the point he was dangerous and mean.
@@breonawarren1507 It's more like he began to act stupid just for the sake of being stupid. This is exactly the same problem with Patrick, but Patrick is 1000 times worse. It's just like how Double D became excessively "smart" just for the sake of having an obnoxiously smart character.

For clarification, Lol Random humor is like "lets have the characters act in the craziest and wackiest ways we can think of because why not!?"
Modern Spongebob is a great example.
In Ed Edd and Eddy, it made the narrative of the show start to become more driven by the character's personalities. All in all, it never got that bad in Ed Edd and Eddy. I actually think the over the top characters made the show more enjoyable. It constantly bordered on the line of personality driven and plot driven, which made it fun to watch. Most of the episodes of the show were still plot driven enough to be good. It was and is still my favorite cartoon.

My only complaint with the show was that the characters got a little more exaggerated by the end of the series. I actually stopped liking some of the characters as a result.
However, the movie was a complete ending, the Eds finally get accepted and everyone learned a lesson.
Ed Edd N Eddy: What Went Wrong? Our understanding of comedy went wrong clearly.
comedy then: jokes and slap stick.
comedy now: orange man bad.
@CreeperManCreeps still pretty descriptive of later Ed Edd 'n Eddy humor.
Edd seems to be a character that hits his stride in academia. When school is in session, he has a confidence that he didn't have during the summer break, and is the one that keeps the three amigos together with his understanding of the school system, teachers, homework, etcetera. Eddy on the other hand is at his worst in school. He's forced to be there, doesn't get good grades (doesn't do homework or study), is a trouble-maker for attention, worries about his parent's reactions to bad grades... The roles in some ways of those two characters are reversed. Edd is confident in school, Eddy on the other hand is not, but the way the two kids deal with it is different and makes sense. Edd is more timid and passive when he is stuck in times where he is not in his element. Eddy reacts with anger and avoidance. The season makes sense, is some of the most relatable stuff in all seasons of the show, and is one of my honest favorite seasons.
Don DeSilva I agree .
Honestly yeah, that was the only season I bought when I was younger, especially since I watched the fuck out of the first 2 seasons due to them being the only ones on DVD
That makes a lot of sense and I wish more people understood that
Eddy's actually pretty intelligent; he just chooses to use more of his brain for schemes instead of schoolwork. Basically, "Brilliant but Lazy". And the teachers tend to judge him prematurely. He's shown getting detention a lot, even when he's not directly responsible for whatever happened. He got in trouble for _Ed_ pouring gravy in the swimming pool, and he got in trouble for impersonating the principal even though again, Double D did that.
No one's denying he's intelligent, we all know this, op was just explaining why Eddy and Double D seem to have switched personalities during the school time. Unless you were talking about Eddy?
I will counter a few points of your with this. Double Dee getting more confident makes sense, and at this point he has deeply rooted friendships with the other Eds, so it doesn't make sense to say he don't fit in. This is true if we looking at the show from independent instances, but I think that moments like in the emotional climax of the movie showed that Double Dee really cares for Eddy, and that he genuinely likes him as a person, and only recently was getting on his nerves. This means that even if he thought some of the things Eddy did was bad or wrong, he wouldn't simply abandon him. Mostly because for the most part, while greedy, he still stuck by the other Eds. And Double Dee, as a person, honestly enjoyed the antics and scams they were on.
Heck, saying that Double Dee needed Eddy for a driving force is a bit much, because it then paints him as a person who was using Eddy just as much as Eddy was using him. First and foremost, they are friends. Everything else comes after
I completely agree. Sure they might have had more confrontations in the last season than before, but in hindsight it's a buildup to the breaking point that is the movie, and like you said, how Double D truly cares for Eddy.
I was very confused by that point in the video. Does Steve just abandon his friends when he doesn't need them anymore? That's... pretty shitty.
Covered what I was thinking. Thanks, Ed
That sound in the episode where they were chasing the red balloon, as Eddy ran up the steel slide, had me in tears, and still does to this day!! Love this show.
The truth is best friends often drift apart the older they get, the more they start to crave social acceptance in other circles. The problem is that they started becoming each other's antagonists

They're not that much older, they all go to the same middle school
How are they several years older if theyre all in the same school? Unless they got held back, which isn’t out of the question
Louis Juarez somewhere between 12 (the Eds’ age) and 16?
I always assumed they just failed a couple years and that the blonde was actually the oldest lol
Interestingly enough, the first episode with the Kanker sisters has them put the Eds in their fathers’ bathrobes (...there’s probably nothing disturbing there). There’s three robes, but each has a different name. Lee mentions their mom, but they don’t tend to talk about their dad(s).
They all seem to be similar in age (with Lee implied to be the oldest, and thus the leader), and their ‘father’ is three different men.
It’s heavily implied that they’re stepsisters, and their mom went through at least 3 different baby-daddies
I actually really liked the last seasons.
The problem I have with earlier season is that (With some exceptions) they all take the place in the same time and place (Often even weather doesn't change) and because at least here where I live the previous episodes has constant reruns it's all kinda blended together in the long run.
Because they actually decided to change season in the show and introduced new places those seasons felt really fresh for me and it was interesting to see what they could do with more restrictive environment.

As much as I love the show, I have never been one to ignore the obvious, and I can summarize exactly what went wrong with _Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy_ in one word: *F L A N D E R I Z A T I O N .* All the characters slowly began to fall victim of flanderization and begun having one of their many character traits be their only one character trait. And it's very evident comparing all the characters from their first season appearance to their very last.
I agree
Like what?
That is true, but the flanderization never bothered me, as the show was always quite over the top and weird.
Maybe, but I’d say it was an overall great show and even the worst episodes weren’t god awful
@@mccrillisnsiah No it was. At least most episodes, but there are a few exceptions, usually the 1st seasons episodes were quite tame.
Sarah's expression to Ed's "so move!!!" is pure bliss
@Khaled Shanshal Ed's voice sounds like The Offspring's lead singer.
Ed Edd n Eddy was one of the last shows to use cells for animating. Basically, the coloring was done by painting then putting the lines over top of it. When season 5 came (even though Danny Antonoucci stated that he hates digital animation), that's when stuff was done digitally
I always took season 5 to be the season when all the kids were sick of the same bullshit all the time. Like, the kids are tired of their shtick and Eddy is becoming more and more desperate for their acceptance and starts lashing out at everyone (his friends specifically). Double D is maturing and - as you pointed out, he was apologising for the Eds back in the first few seasons - is realising more and more how Eddy's behaviour is affecting him/them. Ed seems to be leaning more and more into his own little world to kinda...ignore whats going on?
Season 5, and up to it, really felt like a good build-up to everything in the movie - wow, you mean the short kid who's been abused by an asshole he looks up to his whole life and is alienated by all his peers and is slowly growing apart from his best friends reacts by being a prick? Shocker.
Good points. It kinda all led to the movie!
bro i didn’t even realize this after all these years
I recall the episode where Eddy talks about his brother and I was like: "Wow, Eddy speaks highly about his brother like I do. I wonder what He's like." then the Movie rolled around and I was like: "Oh...so he was a bully."

I can't even imagine a kid actually finishing one!
Short Answer: "Not Much"
In my opinion the show has actually been consistently good throughout it's run (though I will admit Season 5 did had some unwatchable episodes) and finish off with a perfect finale.
3:18 Wow I did not notice that until now 😂
They did slow down when they went back to school.
Although the movie was a great ending.
@@Bopperann Yeah, there was some school era episodes that weren't great (especially Session 5) but there were others that pretty good.
I honestly agree. I like almost all of the episodes excluding a few that admittedly aren't too great, I don't think any show goes without at least a few episodes that aren't as good as the rest. And honest to God the movie was great and serves as one of my favorite finales as well.
It was rare for kid’s cartoons to have official endings since networks never want kids to know that their show ended so they’ll be compelled to keep watching the reruns. That’s why the Angry Beavers finale was never finished.
I think a reason for double d to stick with him would just be childhood friends staying together because it's what they're used to. That's a really common thing, you stay friends with someone out of habit and not from any real similarities.

37:00 it's possible that Edd hangs out with Eddy because of their history? People sometimes stay friends with someone they've grown different from because they've known them for a long time
True, when you know a friend for long enough you almost get attached even if you both change.
I'm not gonna say that stuff didn't go wrong, but change is gonna happen when you have a show go on for five seasons. So unless you're straight up looking for differences, you're gonna find them. I personally think this show was awesome

Never actually thought the show suffered in any sort of way throughout the it's run. I know the school setting in the later seasons wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I still think the comedy and charm was still kinda there. It wasn't even *that* bad in comparisons to other cartoons that dramatically changed throughout the years like SpongeBob, The Simpsons, and Family.
The show also had an incredible finale. Least they ended the show before it could arguably get worse. Kinda like Gumball.

There hasn't really been any confirmation of a Gumball movie and the creator of the show said he hopes it gets greenlit. Meaning it hasn't been greenlit yet unlike Big Picture Show which was greenlit before the show even ended.

Season 5 was a mixed bag in my opinion. It had some really enjoyable moments and episodes but overall was not great and my least favorite episodes come from that season.
While season 5 was certainly a decline in quality it was still good and still recognizably Ed Edd n Eddy. The show fared much better than the last few seasons of Dexters Lab, Powerpuff, and Johnny Bravo where their last few seasons felt like a completely different series
@@mccrillisnsiah Ever think maybe that was intentional? The other kids grew to detest the Eds and especially Eddy more and more over the course of the show, culminating in the finale movie where things come to a head and are resolved. I suppose these episodes of "ed torture" seem pointless and bad if taken in a vacuum, but I always saw the show as having a certain sense of progression and character development that many episodic cartoons lack.
The 2000 era of Johnny Bravo, for me, was the definitive version, I liked it even more than the 90's version or the 2004 version. PPG's later seasons had a much more crisp-looking animation, and I liked it, but I didn't like the episodes or the characters very much. Same thing goes for the later seasons of Dexter's Lab.
The last seasons of Powerpuff Girls was awesome. Later Dexter's lab was still pretty good but the animation wasn't as good.

The switch to digital animation was the end for the show or any show in that matter. The switch just makes it too clean and sterile not to mention bright and vibrant that can cause any sensory overload. Even the Creator knew when they had no choice but to switch over so he wanted to pretty much self-sabotage (poorier writing, flanderize characters, unconventional plots etc...) the show to allow the network to cancel it without any more future artistic vandalization. I can't imagine what the show would've looked like in high definition since it seems every show at the time's writing especially went downhill after the digital switch.
Hard disagree. I prefer the clean look & bright colours season 5 is one of my favourites too.
