When I first got into lower tunings, King Nothing was always one I got unreasonably giddy with when I played it in C Standard
It's stuff like this that makes you realize how well written some of their later riffs really are.

The riff James plays during Kirk's solo in Creeping Death is a hidden gem.

I know this is a very weird 1 but the clean riff from bleeding me hits differently. Also every riff from Ride the Lighting Master of Puppets and Justice for all is just amazing
I totally feel ya man. It doesn't hit the same for me anymore, but when I was a teen it hit so well. And the chorus is still freakin awesome to me.
The main riff in Wherever I May Roam is one of my favorites, it has a kinda Egyptian vibe and the tempo is spot on, makes you instantly wanna bang your head, also can't forget that insane snare just before the riff.
I think the most underrated Metallica song and riff is Don’t Tread On Me. Right after the West Side story intro, the riff kicks in and it sounds like it’s going to crawl out of your speakers and punch you in the face. I also love Blackened and Dyers Eve. Blackened has this Prog-ish arrangement (time signature wise) with a kick-ass feeling to it. That and Dyers Eve are just brutal as hell. You’re a huge inspiration for me to pick up production as a hobby in high school. Plus, you introduced me to Blackwater Park, Images And Words, and the entirety of metal to me. I just can’t thank you enough. Love from Ohio 🤘

The post-solo riff in Dyers Eve which is a variation on the main riff with lower inversions and a gallop rhythm CRUSHES! Even to this day, that thing is massive.
Some of my favourites:
- 2 X 4 (the second riff, that short one before the vocals kick in)
- Dream No More (main riff, just a deathmarch)
- The Frayed Ends of Sanity (bridge, nasty as hell)
- The Frayed Ends of Sanity (chorus, one of the most fun riffs I've heard)
2 x 4 has it's problems for me. But it is a cool riff
"Frayed" is a fan favorite and extremely difficult live... as a fan, I think every riff in that song is gold... as a fan

I'd add the main riff from That Was Just Your Life, Blackened, that interlude from Sweet Amber, and the main Riff from And Justice For All
Hearing these riffs in drop tuning is awesome, the bridge riff from One kills! Weirdly the only one that felt wrong for me was Sad But True, they really did do something special with that recording. Rock on Mike 🤘
I'm totally with you!!! There's something special about that recording but it just feels MASSIVE in D (giggity).
I feel like it's the guitar tone and the fact that James Hetfield doubles or quad tracks his rhythm parts. And if I remember, James used a baritone guitar for sad but true.

Sounds good in C. Riffs hold pretty well in different tuning. My favorite Metallica cover is Fight fire with fire by Vader.

I always thought the riff before the solo in "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" was cool. Has a nice edge to it.
I must admit, as a D# fanboy, it's crazy how versatile these riffs are that they can be played on a guitar tuned two whole steps below standard tuning, and still be almost as powerful as when they were first recorded.
Here are some of my 10 favorite Metallica riffs, in no particular order:
1. Master of Puppets (obviously)
2. Disposable Heroes (pre-chorus riff)
3. One (bridge riff)
4. Fade to Black (outro riff)
5. Blackened (main riff)
6. The Four Horsemen (main riff)
7. Creeping Death (“Die by my hand” riff)
8. Sad But True (another obvious one)
9. The Call of Ktulu (clean A-minor riff)
10. Dyers Eve (probably the most brutal riff and song they have and ever will make)

That Orion riff in C could very well come from Dethklok. Sounds wicked!
Fav Metallica riffs (too many to think of but just a few to name): Wherever I May Roam (main riff), Sad But True (main riff), Battery (post-solo/outro), Sanitarium (post-solo outro riff), All Nightmare Long (pre-verse riff & between solo riff).
Fuel is way too fun to play. Instantly makes me smile.

My personal favorite Metallica riff is the bridge riff on Damage Inc. There's something really ominous and powerful about the riff, especially when the vocals come in on top of it before the solo

You had some fantastic picks but one of my all time favorite Metallica songs of all time is Leper Mesisah, it's just full of heavy ass riffs.
One of my favorite Metallica riffs is the god that failed! It has balls, It has soul and the production to back it up. Severally underrated by the Metallica fanbase! And great choices Mike!
God That Failed is a tough track. Just really vulnerable about growing up in a strangling environment. As much as I don't "love" all the riffs, they really do compliment the meaning well.
@@BecomeTheKnight yea man! I do love the riffs personally. I think it’s more emotional for me because I lost my grandpa a few years ago and at that point I got into this band and when this song hit. I went into tears. Sense then I kept listening and it made me the man I am today. Metallica are the true inspiration of me. Got me out of s#icide and kept my chin up. Thank you Metallica!

The intro/outro riff in Creeping Death has to be my favorite, along with Master of Puppets obviously! Another song that's just full of gems is Ride The Lightning.
The first time I chugged the Bells riff… I knew I was finally metal.

I’ve always viewed For Whom The Bell Tolls’s chromatic palm muted riff as the first step in evolution of riffs towards slam riffs.
Devil's dance slaps in that tuning! I personally would have liked to see the intro riff to "Ride", but you covered a lot of really good stuff!

Its been a while since I've gone through all the albums, but 2 of the riffs that I've always loved were the intro riff to Blackened (the riff just before and as the drums come in), just feels like the beginning of the end of the world to me, and for different reasons, the intro riff to Ain't My Bitch, just a fun jumpy riff that gets me energized the moment I hear it. Loved the extra stank on Seek And Destroy man.
One of my favorite Metallica riffs is the verse riff from “The God That Failed,” so simple but it does something to me that I can’t explain.
Amazing list! I'd probably have Blackened and/or Creeping Death and/or Battery in there somewhere. I really really like The Shortest Straw main riff but it's hard to substitute anything out.

That main riff from Call of Ktulu is one of my favorite Metallica riffs (and instrumental even more than Orion), especially off of S&M 🤘🤘
My personal top 3 favorite Metallica riffs are the broken gallop riff from Damage Inc, Kirks riff from Disposable Heroes and the main riff from The Outlaw Torn
One of my favorite riffs is from Four Horsemen. I think the intro riff is really fun to listen to and is pretty 🔥

Master of Puppets riff that starts at 6:20. Always stood out to me and 100% my favorite from Metallica. Also the riff just after the solo on Battery. So much energy!
That is actually the correct pick lol. If I had to do a purely "me" list instead of a general audience list I'd do that in a heartbeat.
My fav riff is most deff the blackened breakdown riff. Shortest straw, harvester (which is only fun with a drum beat lol) ones chorus riff, the god that failed, sad but true, disposable heroes. All my top favs 🤘🏼

I listen to Metallica since I can remember and recently I've come to conclusion how much the riff from Welcome Home is great - not the fast one, or the Rush tribute one but the chorus one. It just switches the dynamic of the song and is really powerful when it comes in after the clean/distorted part.

My favorties in Justice are Frayed Ends and Dyers Eve riff because it resonates with the composition and both time changes
My top 10 favorite would be (in no particular order) :
1. Seek and Destroy main riff (the riff and song that got me into metal after the 70s and Metallica)
2. Ride The Lightning bridge spider chord riff (Dave Mustaine's greatest contribution in all of music)
3. For Whom The Bell Tolls main riff (the bass intro is GOATED too)
4. Call of Ktulu bridge riff (same as yours)
5. Master of Puppets main riff (but really any riff in it is fantastic)
6. Battery main riff (first 10 times, I heard it, I went 'oh my god'! Now everytime after that I have went, 'oh yeah baby'!
7. Blackened main riff (main riff to end all main riffs, the heaviest Metallica riff imo and perhaps my favourite Metallica riff)
8. Wherever I May Roam main riff (that vibrato, delicious)
9. Fade To Black main acoustic riff (it's so gorgeous and melancholic, it tugs at your heart everytime)
10. Enter Sandman main riff (it's just great, it's such a classic, you gotta love it).
Really nice list, heres some I would put on:
Disposable Heroes (especially the pre chorus riff, goes so crazy, probably my favourite metallica riffs)
Shadows Follow (that harmony riff is one of my favourites in the past years)
Ride The Lightning (the riff Dave wrote somewhere near the middle of the song is so engaging)
Leper Messiah (the bridge riff is so nice)
Dave allegedly wrote the leper messiah bridge riff

I remember the first time I heard the Battery intro in D standard. I then fell down a rabbit hole of Metallica songs in alternate tunings. It almost feels like listening to the songs for the first time again.
The S&M version of Devil's Dance is so fucking good, ads so much to the studio version

I learned to play guitar in the 90s when everyone was tuning down to Eb. My first guitar has a floyd do i just left it in Eb for years.
The heavy bridge riff in Bleeding me is so sick. Bleeding Me is my favorite Metallica song.
Creeping death has several top tier riffs, the chorus riff from sanitarium is one of the best, and the bridge in fade to black is amazing

One of my top riffs from Metallica that I find super underrated is the post solo breakdown riff from "The Struggle Within." Good lord, what a *_monster,_* that one is 🤘🏻
Other honorable mentions/underrrated ones that come to mind are:
- Leper Messiah (Main Riff and Bridge Riff)
- And Justice For All (Main Riffs)
- Thorn Within (Main/Chorus Riff)
- Wasting My Hate (Main/Chorus Riff. Although the rest of the song has good stuff, too)
- Ain't My Bitch (Main Riff/Verses)
- St. Anger (Main Riff)
- All Nightmare Long (Main Riff(s))
- Judas Kiss (Main Riff)
- Too Live is to die (Harmony riffs after solo)
The Blackened bridge riff is by far my favorite Metallica riff.
Some others that i love are 2x4, The Four Horseman bridge riff (not the Sweet Home Alabama rip off)
Of Wolf and Man (the riff after the verse vocals)
The bridge riff in Fade to Black will always and forever be my favorite Metallica riff.
That impact in Sad But True's main riff is because James played some extra baritone guitars under the low E power muted power chord

ik most people hate Metal Milita but i like the riff from it and the main riffs from Blackened, Dyers Eye and Shortest Straw.
i like the more melodic riffs like the leper messiah, frayed ends of sanity and eye of the beholder breakdowns i think are under rated, love the riffs in c standard

The one riff that is among my favourites - which didn't make it to Mike's list is the opening riff to Jump in the Fire. I might like it even more than Seek and Destroy riff. Other than that - the list is pretty much undeniable.
You frayed ends of sanity bridge, and disposable heroes's bridge. Funny how i find my favorite Hetfield riffs under kirk's solos as well. Like the one from fight fire with fire and the picking pattern. I was like "heeiiiiiinhh ???"
I always loved tuningd lower than D and C is my favourite, used to listen to all metallica songs in C, B, C# even A

That is my Favorite Riffs from Metallica and they are so good for me that I get so much dopamine.
