I am a vehicle tech professionally, I do a bit of bike work, mainly our own fleet, my sons 2006 R1 is cranking slow, I've done voltage drop checks, checked battery/solenoid etc and my conclusion is bad starter, I decided to google it to see what sort of mission we'd be in for and came here. Just replaced my 04 r1 starter today after watching this video. Very informative. Cable reconnect I believe was the difficult part. Anyway it was the starter failing on hot starts, it starts perfectly now. Ty for the vid👍
Awesome video and so helpful. After 5 hours of high concentration and scratching my hands, I saw the difference in the starters. How did you solve the difference in the power connectors? Do they have the same cross section in your video?
So I am doing this per your video (thanks by the way) Mine is a 50th Anniversary. I am not sure if that is the difference, but mine has a mat that covers underneath the throttle body and the starter. I don't think I can get the starter out from underneath it. It looks like to remove it i need to remove the intake boots. I really don't want to. Did yours have a mat and you took it out? what if I cut a section out of it over the starter? Yours doesn't have one at all and I can't really see what it does other than maybe keep it clean above the starter. Any advice would be great.

This is great. Just picked up an 05 r1 with 20k miles for 900$. The owner told me it needs a battery, I hear a click when I go to start it from the relay. I have a new battery and it still clicks. I just bought a starter relay to if it thats the problem. If thats not it maybe ill try a new starter motor. Any idea of what you think the problem could be? Thanks! Great vid
Replaced the starter now I have code 12 crankshaft position sensor, any idea? Bike cranks but will not start. I tried bridging the starter solenoid with a set if pliers and it still wont start
Question I have a 06 r1 the battery drains while I'm idling rectifier stator and flywheel are new and recently my bike will not start even if I jump it from a car it slowly cranks until the battery dies and starts to click battery passed a load test and I'm sure if I ran it down the street to roll start it'd fire right up Could my starter brushes have went bad and caused a parisitic drain? Replaced the whole charging system I don't see what else it could be
@@bullinapeamurica5940 This has happened to me before but my mistake was going after market on the rectifier and stator, since then I only use OEM parts. What brand are yours? Also did you check if your magneto was damage when you replace your stator?
@@SUPSGARAGE the stator is oem rectifier is ricks motorsports but it acts the same way with my OEM rect. the magneto (I called it the flywheel) is from RMstator, my magnets exploded so I had to change it out.

I need some advice regarding to my 2004 R1, i service the bike myself, bought it 6 months ago, before 1500km (now 45200km) changed oil and filter, spark plugs, coolant, repaired starter motor (new brushes), adjusted TB intake vacuum. Engine runs smooth and pulls strong without any hickups, starts cold and hot (100 degC or higher) without problems. The problem is, when i start the bike and take it to warm at working temperature and higher (ride it or not), fans kicks in and out i shut it down and start instantly without any issue. The problem starts when engine cooled down a little (70 deg C or so, resting for 45 min) it wont start at once, starter motor is cranking with normal speed but it takes 3-5 seconds or more to turn off the fuel light and start the engine. I dont know what to do, it is a minor but annoying problem and i cant solve it. Other than that bike is running smooth, pulls strong, fuel consumption is normal, no abnormal mechanical noises from engine.
So basically after riding it, parking it for 45 min or so and then trying to turn it on it again you have to hold the starter button longer then usual to start? is that correct?
@@SUPSGARAGE Yes, that's what happens, i forgot to say that i recently repaired starter motor, cleaned it and changed brushes, so now it works like new.
