I learned that thrushes are a species of songbird that typically mate for life and are known for being loyal and ferociously protective of home and loved ones. One alighting outside your window could signify a happy home and relationship that could weather any storm. Of course, this thrush reminds Ary (original writer) of what he had hoped to have, and the bird's presence is a cruel but comforting reminder of what could not be. And, since thrushes mate for life, could it be that this solitary thrush which sits with the author has lost its mate, too? In a way, the author and this thrush might be commiserating in loss as they make melancholy music together. I hope this image brings new levels of enjoyment to this song for you!
I'm brazilian, and this is my interpretation. A thrush on a cage is a very common "pet" of sorts (or at least was, not so common nowadays) and is usually kept alone. The "mate for life" symbolism is not strongly associated with this bird (swallows are much more culturally associated with that characteristic). The thrush is kept because of its beautiful singing, and it makes me think that the disillusioned player/poet cared much about music and thought of it as its only remaining consolation, and anything else reminding the crumbled relationship would be too painful for him. The "all there's left" part makes it clear it was a huge loss. Besides that, even the consolation was hurtful, as the song title suggests.

Better than the song itself and even the performances themselves (which are stellar) is the way that this was recorded - even though it was done in the early 60's, this song sounds like Getz's sax was practically miked in the mouthpiece itself - practically every vibration of the reed can be heard, heck, almost every molecule of air being exhaled by Getz can be heard.

Better than the song itself and even the performances themselves (which are stellar) is the way that this was recorded - even though it was done in the early 60's, this song sounds like Getz's sax was practically miked in the mouthpiece itself - practically every vibration of the reed can be heard, heck, almost every molecule of air being exhaled by Getz can be heard.
