Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much Talent on that stage, Rick and Levon singing together always makes me cry, There will NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be music like this again😭😭😭
Just phenomenal ! What an absolutely fantastic performance. Great to see Richard on drums and Rick on fiddle too. I think Garth nails that piano though!
A true Band in every sense of the word! When was the last time a group had three world class singers, one of the finest songsmiths of his generation, and certainly the most astonishing musician of the Rock era? Yeah, I thought so! A Band of sidemen,A Band of journeymen, and a Band who even in twenty twenty two, have to be surpassed in honest to god, brilliant musicality. I personally shall never see or hear any group come close to their extraordinary gifts or talents.
If you like The Band, you should check out Ursa and the Major Key. They have a song called Only The Sky Is Blue that sounds pretty similar to The Band, and their whole album is influenced by The Band, Floyd, Grateful Dead, etc.
Doing the dishes one more dull and dreary morning after breakfast , and after years this song came into my mind listens to both this and a recording session both most enjoyable , What incredible times my generation lived in !!🙌❤️ The Band 🌹🙏
Rest in peace, Levon. You were a great musician and a great person, you're gone physically, but your artistic legacy continues delighting, thanks for everything, really.
What do you mean "like" a badass? Garth is "the" badass. Reminds me of the video requiem for Levon wherein the journalist speaks of people looking their whole life for music that sounds like the real thing, all the while Levon "was" the real thing.
I believe that this footage is from a Winterland "house" video camera. Scorcese's crew was shooting color 35mm film at the same time. Glad this footage has been shared.
@@justfelix6171 It's insane, for sure. My favorite part is, no matter how big a mess Busey makes of the whole thing, Rick looks soooooooo serious with that fiddle. It's one of the best SNL musical "performances" ever--a rocking disaster from start to finish.
@@34hedgehog they also wanted to get as much "star power" as they could into the movie. So while the Band played 16 of their own songs that night, only a few made it into the movie.
i would suspect the entire concert had color footage, this one was most likely cut out either time restrictions or in the original recording levons mic was WAY too low for a few seconds
Sadly, I don't think Scorsese and Robertson scripted this one. They had a limited amount of 35mm film per camera for each take, and they timed each song so the cameras wouldn't run out of film mid-song. This is from the BGP house footage, from a single camera, which captures everything, including all the mistakes that were corrected and overdubbed for the movie and the official soundtrack.
On the extra footage for the Last Waltz where they sing Evangeline with Emmylou, Rick is playing fiddle from his hip and it sounds pretty darn good. He could play a mean acoustic and lead guitar too (on his own records) , as well as possessing that amazing voice. A great talent gone way too soon.
Such amazing music but I just hate what this film represents. The way The Band were screwed over is just disgusting. Read Levon's book if you don't understand.
Read Hoskins and Robertson's books, Levon was just bitter and paranoid. Friends of his admitted Levon was beyond unreasonable. Levon Helm was not screwed over. They all made MILLIONS. They were not business men.

For me, The Band died in 1986 when keyboardist-singer Richard Manuel killed himself via suicide inside a bathroom in his hotel.
What could be more fun than watching Rick D play the base?...................Watching him saw away on the fiddle.
Just phenomenal ! What an absolutely fantastic performance. Great to see Richard on drums and Rick on fiddle too. I think Garth nails that piano though!

I wish Rick's fiddle was more audible.
Honey be ready ' cause I wanna be there when The Band starts playing...
Love the way Rick taps his bow on Garth's piano - anticipating his play! xoxo

The Band 🌹🙏
Such a great version of a great tune. Play on Robbie. R.I.P.
It doesn't get any better than that,
Garth Hudson, what a man!
Richard is playing another drum set. On the album...Rick-Fiddle...Garth-Piano...Levon-Mandolin/lead vocals...Robbie-Guitar...Richard-Drums
Fantastic version, I've never heard Garth play piano better than this, it's his usual wild and crazy solo but somehow he keeps this one under control.
Yeah I love it. It’s like a Cajun rag time blues mash up on the verge of chaos but it’s perfect
yeah buddy Garth!...I think Richard was cutting in there a fair bit too.
With the tuba bass and the ragtime piano, the drummers instinctively set up a New Orleans second line groove with a pinch of Cajun fiddle seasoning…
Wow! Should have been in the movie!
Rest in peace, Levon. You were a great musician and a great person, you're gone physically, but your artistic legacy continues delighting, thanks for everything, really.
He really was a great person! He was truly humble!
I love this 💘
I like at the end how as soon as garth sweeps the piano he stands up like a badass

Just came across this - it's made my day.
Party on GARTH !!!
:)
Great find
Thank you for a great post The Band lives on forever
Yup. I'm another huge band fan lol
I would love to see this on the last waltz. Good to see Garth tear it up.
Garth doesn't always tear it up? I say he's like god tying everything together in the background.
the only film where I see Danko on fiddle beside the elusive SNL video w/ Gary Busey.
I ended up just buying the whole episode to get that segment.
Pretty rare indeed.
The SNL video is pretty wild

Wonderful
Suzaphone bass playing. Needs to be done more often.
Thanks for pointing that out!
The band is great, everyone could sing and play multiple instruments you don't see that often 😉
Levon and Richard on drums here 🤙
Beautiful Rick Danko
ohhh its wonderful they never know when to finish that track
Perfect
More tuba!
A.M.A.Z.I.N.G ! ! !
And we know where Richard is....Beatin' on the drums!!!
Great Boss Levon forever
Too bad the cameras didn't pick this up. Would have been excellent addition to the movie.
Scorsese missed so much, focussing on Robbie's neck muscles!

Yes, he is!
Thanks. : )
twin drums!

Not enough artists experiment with brass in nowadays..what a pity.
Definitely.
In the 70's a lot of Classic Rock artists did (Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, etc).
Not much now.
Yes it is...
Jumpin' jest jumpin' TY
that's Levon Helm,R I P on drums,Tony.
Is Richard Manuel playing the 2nd drum set (behind Robbie, to the left of Levon)?
Richard played the drums on the album version.
Yes, that's he
Rag mama rag Cowtown on Thursday nights how many likes can I get go
my kinda piano
GARTH!!!
Howard Johnson.
Pretty sure it's Levon on drums, though he usually plays mandolin in this.
It's both Levon and Richard. And Garth shifts over to piano.
True he always brought out the mandolin when he was with the Cate bros.
Pretty manic impressive. What happened to the color footage of this? I saw a camera moving around behind the group at one point.

Who´s playing the Bass when Rick is playing the violin?
Tuba plays the bottom parts, was usually Howard Johnson.
Who played bass while Rick played fiddle?
The tuba player
Quite a bit slower than the album version. Maybe they didn't practice this one as much as the others.
yeah, prefer the stripped down version of this without the wall of horns and can also do without the flying wisps of hair
It's a tuba. There isn't a bass.
I never knew ! Rick plays the violin , there's no base guitar, and Richard plays the drums ???? Cool
The Tuba is the bass.

Not every song has to have bass!
Especially when you got a sousaphone!

There's no solution to this relationship driven problem. Like most groups, they fell apart over money, drugs, & management.
twin drums!
