GLE 53 and the Unexpected Design! Mr AMG First Look!

- First AMG of the new GLE family!! And that is the GLE63... wait no, GLE53..! It’s that AMG grill it’s so confusing!!
This is the new GLE 53 4matic+, and rather look at it in Geneva, in typical RBR style we are borrowing it! This GLE AMG is a part hybrid in-line 6 turbo, just like the E53 and CLS53 we tested recently! We will look briefly at the engine but I know what you’re thinking and you’re right, this looks like the 63 car!
This AMG panamericana grille till now used to be reserved only for full 63 AMGs like the new G63, or for the AMG GT family cars. And then we had entry level AMG cars like the 35, 43 and 53 cars all with the twin blade classic grille. Two faces to differentiate two power levels. Now that’s all changed and the GLE53 has the Panamericana grille! I will explore the reasoning behind this as well as what it means for the future of AMG design.
As mentioned, it’s the usual 53 flavour of in line 6 petrol engine with 435 520nm, and fully variable power in the AMG 4matic+ all wheel drive system and between that and the 9-speed gear box is your hybrid power: the EQ Boost starter generator adding + 22hp and 250nm. The GLE53 0-60 is only 5.3 seconds.
That system also charges the 48v system of the car, a system that allows more current and thus clever new systems. Mainly the new AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL air suspension, based on AMG Ride control+. But best of all, GLE 53 also gets the AMG performance exhaust system!
But will the GLE63S be different enough? What else has changed vs the GLE 450?

I'm liking the direction they're taking... though I understand the argument for and against the grille. Though I think there really needs to be some distinction inside and out so people know its a 53 or a 63 with out having to rely on the badge.

I still think the Panamericana grille would have been better kept for the future GLE63S model. Although I guess it does make sense, seeing how the GT43 and GT53 have the same grille (they need to have a consistent design).

I think its brillant. AMG is expanded their brand to a wider range of people. The 63s are just a potent and savage as ever but now AMG is appealing to a larger share of the Market.

A painful reminder is when a GLE63 roars passed you and in that moment youll be reminded where that grill really belongs

Personally I've seen it in Geneva, my opinion is if they allowed panamericana grill option on GT43/53 then it's logical that they want to boost GLE53 with panamericana, but A35 could also have panamericana 😎🤣 GLE63 would have wider bumper and maybe wider front wheel arches. Cool animation effects Raz, must be a lot of work to make them look realistic 👍🏼
Yeah it's design consistency which does make sense I guess. So long as the 63 models get those lovely large air intakes, massive quad tail pipes, etc...
The new Gle interior had some materials that weren't what I expected at all in something like this. Particularly in the centre console

It's difficult to take because they only just introduced the 53 series AMGs recently. They are changing their design language too quickly. Now they are saying for example, a potential facelift E43/E53 will have the same grille as an E63? The AMG GT family are the flagship AMGs hence I appreciate how it made sense for their whole line-up to have the Panamerica Grille

You should be on AMG's payroll. Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG, in particular, may as well be the most exciting car brands right now, as they're going through so much positive change. However, to an average observer, they can get a little complicated and confusing, and unless you're in love with the industry as some of us, you can easily get lost. Thank goodness for Raz to help clarify the confusion.

I like the new AMG grill in the 53 series. If your paying extra for an AMG, you should get the panamericana grill. Otherwise, one may feel a bit cheated. You still have the front air intakes, wheels and rear exhaust differentiating the 53 & 63 series.

One Question: What do you think in detail about the NVIDIA Mercedes Infotainment System and do you have a "learning/ai" experience with one of your cars already ?
So here are my 2 cents no one asked for. Changes are being rolled out progressively and probably not all the changes are planned much in advance. See for instance the AMG 450 badging, it lasted for a really short period of time before being changed into AMG 43! Probably this came after hearing the customers! Another example is the Matrix grill that is still being used in some E53. So 53s are now being sold with the matrix, dual blade and panamericana grille. It is indeed confusing and it seems that the styling department didn't have a plan with the different AMG lines of engines. Hopefully they have now sorted this out and they will only keep the dual blade and the Panamericana grille.

With this approach, Merc is going sportier look across the entire range.
I like Mercedes, AMG, You and your special effects - but I don't like that they put the Panamerican grill look alike on an 53 :/
I think the issue is when they use that grill on a normal mercedes, this is a AMG so why not

Which software do you use for editing
Don't think it's the finalized design and it's lacking the front engine bonnet bulge and vent. Needs the salami cut squarer exhaust at back because the AMG exhaust doesn't look bad ass enough. Personally feel front spotlights below grill has always been spectacular. Output is ok fast torqued enough great suspension I am a big fan of the GLE 550 and look forward to the design of the future the ask your car a command is great. There's a lot of things to like. Love the shape and aerodynamics of the handling of this suv.
I’m just not that happy that all these lower trim amg models get all the technologies and stuffs like same steering wheel etc. For me it feels like all the models looks similar. 53 and 45s are getting the same grill with my s63. Spending over 200k and I want it to differentiate itself from the others.
I would rather get a panamera hybrid however this car is quite sexy

I would imagine there is a new design language coming to range-topping AMGs in the future. Like the twin-blade, this allows them to demote the "old" panamericana to lower trims, while boosting sales of these vehicles in the meantime as they appear to punch higher than their pricetags. AMG will differentiate their mega-expensive top trims from their lower trims/drivetrains. Dont worry.
