- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Halo Infinite was rough around the edges on release with animation issues, frame-pacing woes and extra problems in cutscenes. Some issues were tackled post-launch, but it's with the release of the Season 2 patch that some long-standing issues have finally been resolved. Alex Battaglia and John Linneman investigate.

This is wild. Microsoft built Dx12. Built Windows and Xbox. And yet this game is in the state that it is in. Its absolutely mind blowing.
RTX 3080 and I7 and I played it for 2 hours then shut it off. Couldnt deal with frame drops around 80 FPS to less than 30fps (in 1440p...) when certain effects or animations played, couldnt deal with the game not even feeling fluid at close to 120 fps. what did they do here?
Seeing how they busted Halo 2 on the Xbox series X after it was super smooth and never fixed it my ill will towards 343 just grows and grows. What are they doing to the franchise? Awful storylines, half finished games and technical issues and baffling decisions (halo 5 60 fps on xbox one... looks like a xbox game but at least its 60 fps...)

It took over half a year to fix fundamental presentation issues like the animation playback rate and even then-frame pacing is still buggy and facial animations still look so choppy
Exactly.
Purty much
halo mcc took several years just to include all the games and then even more time to add the missing original graphics effects from halo 1, this is nothing new from 343 or halo management right now sadly
Still better than battlefield
343 has gotten way too comfortable releasing half baked products and fixing them over the course of their lifespan. Its really frustrating how they keep kneecapping everything they put out

@@heebs9728 You're missing nothing.
This game is absolutely the worst release I've ever seen.
In a year it might be ok.
Let's talk about the elephant in the room first. Is the game still a CPU hog on PC? Does the frame rate go to hell once you get to the open world despite the game running at 30 fps on 9 year old jaguar cores on the Xbox one?
I had no issues, but I also have a 5600x.
I’m using a 6800XT play on max settings at a 32:9 ratio. I keep the frame rate locked at 60 and use Radeon Chill so I can keep my GPU temps at 70-80s.
what cpu do you have? do you play with xbox one lods and settings?
You mean gpu hog, right?
@@MicaelWander Yeah it's way worse on the GPU in the open world from my experience. Running at 4k with a 3080 and a 5600x
I want 343 to implement FSR 2.0 in this game. I personally think the game will benefit from this a lot since FSR 2.0 also supports Dynamic/Adaptive resolution scaling that this game uses all the time to reach it's target fps. FSR 2.0 will greatly improve the image quality at lower resolutions, and will also improve image stability.
It’s already using something relatively equivalent, internally. It’s probably not as good as FSR, but the difference wouldn’t really be that huge since it’s already doing reconstruction on everything that you see.
@@itsd0nk yes, Halo Infinite already uses a temporal upscaler internally, but at low resolutions, the image starts to look like an oil painting, not to mention the blurry-ness. FSR 2.0 on the other hand, does quite well at low resolutions, in terms of image reconstruction, stability and clarity.
@@kishaloyb.7937 I think, as they stated in the video, this has a lot to do with the VRS.
I completely agree. This games TAA looks really good for screenshots, but as soon as you start moving it breaks down completely.
I tried setting my resolution to a fixed 6k (at about 5fps, and I could still see it break down on my 1440p monitor when I turned the camera.
Resolution is almost irrelevant at this point because it always ends up breaking down during motion, no matter what
@@itsd0nk VRS isn't on pc, and its still a problem there
Whilst it's good they're fixing these technical issues, my problem with Halo Infinite is they still haven't delivered the content they said would be included when the game was originally supposed to launch in 2020.
That’s really the issue for me, and when people joke about the game being incomplete, for me, it isn’t about the bugs, it’s the lack of content

I cant quite wrap my head around how this game launched with the amount of issues it had much less how many of these issues are still around. I really wish we could get an inside view of what the hell was actually being done during all that time.
Simple. 343 are incompetent idiots.
The inside view was all about how they can implement micro transactions and how much they can get people to pay for an armour colour actual game performance and bugs are an after thought
Game was built with gamepass in mind all they did was talk about how they could make money and did nothing except give Craig a mohawk , joke of a game
@@TristanTheVRGamecat Well we did at least get a decent meme and great ost out of it.
@@alivingturnip.9288 True if as much effort that was put into the soundtrack was put into rest of game might have got something decent
Honestly, I still just really want an improved anti aliasing option. Whether or not you like TAA, it's fairly obvious infinite has a terrible implementation of it. It blurs absolutely everything (especially foliage) as soon as you start moving at all.
This game has really nice and clean textures and assets, but it all looks really muddy and blobby in motion.
I've resorted to rendering at native, upscaling to a dldsr resolution of 4k, and have dldsr downscale back to 1440p to get a relatively clear image, and it's still not as good as it should be
Ay ay ay that is a hassle lol
Have you tried some shaders from ReSahde? I can sometimes get better AA using a combination of experimental AA+sharpening shaders compared to native TAA in some games.
Just give us the ability to turn it off at least, I don't care if the game looks jaggy. temporal stability at the cost of motion clarity is an overrated meme
@@bulutcagdas1071 I use reshade a lot, but it can't bring back all the detail the TAA takes away.
Reshade has some great anti aliasing options if you can turn off the in game AA, but infinite doesn't let you do that so the best option I've found is the dldsr technique I mentioned before
@@existentialselkath1264 Oh I didn't realize the game wouldn't let you turn it off. That really sucks then. I had the same issue with Metro Exedous where it doesn't let you turn off the TAA, but you can change the config files to force it off. But if you do that some of the rendering messes up and crashes the game. Maybe it's something like that in Halo Infinite as well.
The weapon animations like the sentinel turrets also remain 30fps unfortunately.

I find it so weird that this game has these issues. It's basically the Xbox's flagship game series, and Microsoft have been in the forefront in the console space when it comes to features like VRR and such. Yet one their own most important games has VRR problems that no other game has.
Vrr isn't anything ground breaking it just covers up poor optimisation besides your TV needs to actually support it shouldn't have to go out and buy a TV with your console just for it to function properly, and you gotta expect these issues when ya getting everything on gamepass there's no incentive to make a good product people are already paying , before devs had to make a good game worth the cost so PEOPLE WOULD BUY IT! Now it's how can we continue to make money from these games that people already automatically have (answer: lower the cost of development or increase monetisation ) and seeing how greedy Xbox is they will and have done both
@@TristanTheVRGamecat I know VRR isn't anything new. But before Halo Infinite I had personally never experienced or even read about any game having issues with VRR, on my xbox or PC. And since MS was the first of the console manufacturers to implement it, I would never have guessed that the first ever game I come across with VRR issues would be a first party MS game.
343 and Mojang absolutely have no business being as successful as they are with how terrible they are at keeping promises and delivering on decent optimization. I really can't believe two of Microsoft's top three studios are this incompetent.
@@sadgiantsfan3690 Same here man ... I can not fucking fathom how 343i are still employed...
@@xproflipscarab it's mind boggling. They develop games for one franchise only. Bethesda at least has an excuse of developing three different franchises with Elder Scrolls, Fallout and now Starfield. It wouldn't surprise me if 343 and Mojang share an office and that's why the work they never get work done.

I really think Microsoft (and a lot of other studios) should pay DF for all the QA work they put in. It's absolutely mindboggling how game studios release their games sometimes. I mean they literally spend years of their life to build this thing just to release it with some shitty rendering of the introduction cutscene. Who in their right mind thinks that this is fine?
The best strategy for playing games these days, seems to be waiting for a year after release, to actually have a good experience. Unless of course you play a game from a studio like Naughty Dog that actually cares about the state of the game they release.
I was one of those guys who noticed Halo 3’s frame time issues. It broke my heart because I was such a die hard Halo 1 & 2 fan. I simply could never play Halo 3 for more than a couple minutes before it started hurting my eyes and brain. People thought I was crazy back then too. I used to describe it as “Halo 1 and 2 had perfectly smooth and perfectly stable 30fps performance. Halo 3 doesn’t. It’s stuttering all the time. Every single second.”
Well, halo 1 and 2 are xbox original games, Halo 3 is the first Halo in xbox360, and the first is "hd"(despite 640p).
Bad frame pacing is just... OOOOOF. It can really kill a game for me
the utter incompetence from 343 over the past decade has been baffling... constantly playing catch up with all their games

The devs should be embarrassed at how badly the game is built on a technical level. It's really awful.
ikr? it has no business running this poorly given how it looks

It's crazy with all this info on why games run like this on the next gen system and yall still don't understand
apparently it is the most expensive game of ALL TIME. The devs should be fired and the studio disbanded for their incompetence.
It's the engine. Runs awful on older hardware no matter what you do. Considering older hardware runs. Better looking titles much easier. It's not a bad looking game. But doesn't look nextgen to me. It's sort of a mixed bag.
I think the engine is the problem and does not uae enough threads.

Nice lie
Apparently I’m running this game at 170fps but it still feels like it’s 60fps. The weapon animations feels like they below 60fps as well.
Yeah I am not an engineer and don't know what's wrong, but I have a similar experience. I play on a 1440p 240hz Samsung monitor every game feels great but Halo Infinite's 140fps for me feels way worse than what the framerate says and gives me a minor headache
How are there so many technical issues - and this far out from release? Isn't this supposed to be the Xbox's flagship title?
Why is 343 not able to get this stuff right without having it pointed out to them? They are given endless time and money to produce these games and yet there always seem to be these crippling technical issues.
People often assume that the end product is what the devs were building up to the whole time, but from what has come out, there were a lot of changes and cuts made during production. The scope changed over time and that can greatly impact development. Do you focus on bugs or actually finishing the game? Is the QA properly equipped/trained to notice these issues and report them back to the team? Once it's back to the team, is management putting these bugs on the backlog to focus on other things (the next MP season for example).
It's not to defend them or anything. There's just a ton that can go on behind the scenes to explain this even though it's quite unfortunate.
Too much going on. They have to develop for 6 different skus.

@@kastaway-m4x Maybe it's time for them to cut off last gen and then focus on next gen series s/x and PC.
A huge problem is how MS runs these companies. A majority of devs are contract staff that are cycled through constantly, and this leads to a never-ending stream of new hires who have to learn the engine tools (and from a lot of accounts, the Halo engine is a mess).
The most needed fix is the issue where a large amount of people still can't even launch the game on game pass for PC.
I had this issue too! Had to play the campaign on Xbox.
The singleplayer is still frametime microstutter galore (on PC at least) since launch, to the point making 100+ fps feel like sub-60. Seems they have zero intentions to fix it.
I seemed to fix that by placing the fps cap at Unlocked and disabling the lower fps cap option

What does it even mean to fix the first cutscene of the game after 6 months later ? How, why ?

This is what happens when you build your studios around firing and re-hiring contract workers.
I would assume the 30fps mode on Series X is the one they would add ray tracing to, which they promised in a post launch update. In a single player game that isn't that difficult I think having a 30fps Ray tracing option is a good thing. If we were talking Elden Ring I'd probably take 60fps.
I really hope that they add RT shadows and RT GI to this game. Mix it with some sort of dynamic weather system could make this game look absolutely stunning.

As someone on a high end PC with a 144hz monitor it blows my mind that the in-game framerate cap isn't fixed. External framerate caps and V-sync aren't good alternatives because they break the dynamic res scaler which would give me a locked 144 but can't. Lowest settings at 1440p, 80% res scale on a 3080Ti cannot do a locked 144 and like covered in this video, drops aren't covered by variable refresh reate
Play on a 1440p 240hz Samsung monitor. Went the longest time playing max settings, 100% res scale, 1440p, minimum set to fps 60, limit set to fps 240. Have come to the realization this is horrible way to play. Now do 1440p uncapped with no minimum framerate and a mixture of setting. It feels so much better, the dynamic res feels busted for me in this game too much stuttering, problems and it looks way worse for me at next to no benefit. I have a 3080, 3700x, 32gb 3600 ram. Averaged about ~140fps multiplayer btb, ~90fps campaign old settings both feel way worse than they should because of stuttering. New settings am at ~165fps multiplayer btb, ~110fps campaign (I think I am still largely CPU and game optimization limited)

Man this sucks. Good games with bad, weird performance is maddening. My Zen 2 RDNA system could run the game great, 1080p120hz but nooooo....
Thank God they fixed the elevated blacks. This problem made a terrible first impression on me as it does whenever it’s present.
The Steam version has been broken for two weeks since season 2..couldn’t even boot. I tried it a few days ago and was able to play it again.
They left things reach a point where they now need to address issues for both the multiplayer and single player aspects of the game simultaneously, and this would be counter productive in an ordinary situation, let alone one as heated as this. They've completely missed the train now...
I've got a Legion 5 and from day one I couldn't play this game because it had visual issues where it was rending everything in HDR despite the laptop not being able to run games in HDR. It looked dire. Does anyone know if this has been fixed yet? It was my most anticipated multiplayer game and when it came out I was super disappointed that I couldn't play it.
That's quite a puzzling issue. Are you running Windows 11? On an unrelated note I'm looking into getting a Legion 5 myself. If you don't mind my asking, how has your experience with it been in terms of temperatures and noise?
@@TheScarletKing honestly everything about the legion 5 has been great. I live in a hot climate and it can be a little noisy with the fans on full blast, but I often don't notice it enough when playing most of the games I've got. It seems well made. This halo issue was a one off incident. Never had any other issues with it.
14:28 Lol, couldn't resist laughing :)
What is difficult to grasp, to me, is that everyone has had the knowledge of these things (improper frame pacing etc.)
FOR LIKE A DECADE!
Still, we constantly get games, that are programmed like... Well, shit, to use the exact word.
Like From Software, I mean, I hate their games altogether... But I hate even more, the fact that they seem to be like totally one of the worst programmers in the known history...
And I'm not even joking. Some of these things in Halo Infinite and in MCC are like a decade old bugs, and they're still not corrected?!? Though MCC is kinda close to perfect, now.... Finally...
Anyway, how it can be so difficult to make a proper frame pacing, some people cannot even lock their game to 30Hz/fps. They're locked to 31 (Crysis, even the remastered versions were botched, and they had a different developer, but even they couldn't fix it. Like, what the hell!?!) xDDDD
Then there's something like iD or Coalition, polished games and about everything fixed really fast.
Yeah why is it so hard for some developers to properly cap the fps to 30 on consoles?
Gears of war 5 on the Xbox Series X has judder and screen tearing with VRR turned on when you sweep the camera. If you disable VRR for Gears 5 it all goes away.
I honestly forgot a Halo game came out.
It’s dreadful
Bruh
You must be living under a rock. The Halo TV show was a smash success breaking records. On Xbox every-time I log on over half of my friends list is on Halo Infinite. I know you want to sound edgy but I could easily say I forgot the PS5 exist and that’s actually true for most people around the world.
As did the rest of the world. There's a reason far more people are playing real games on PS5.
@@BOSSSHAWN what records? Goes without saying that the RUclips community is a minority but the reception is pretty bad.
Can we talk about the horrible weird transparent 2fps bird thing that shows up at 18:40?
I have a 7700k and a 2070 Super with 32 gb of Ram and I attempt to run this game at 1440p dynamically scaled to try hit a solid 60 and can’t, and anything above or below 60 is an uneven frame-paced eye ache. Much to my surprise the performance mode on my Xbox One X feels better with a mouse and keyboard than my PC does. I just stopped playing the PC version entirely as the experience is just frustrating.
I enjoyed the presentation on PC at launch. For context, I'm a massive Halo fan, so my bias is strong. I played on a 32" 60Hz 4k monitor running from my laptop with an i7-96750H, RTX 2070 Max-Q, 16 GB RAM. I certainly wasn't blown away though. There as also mention of raytracing. I haven't heard it mentioned since launch though. They obviously need to get the fundamentals of the engine running properly before they can add this in (if ever). Will this game run for the 10 years as a live service? From current evidence, I seriously doubt it.
I really wish DF covered other game like they do shit games like this lol
It's mutual advertising for halo and Xbox studios that's all
Same here, Halo is now stablished as a hot garbage series
6:27 I didn't remember encountering this issue so I started a new game, the lighting bug is still there and appear when the framerate isn't limited in the game, I play with unlocked and rtss set to 72 and it's flickering, set the game to 60 max fps and it foesn't flicker

Maaan every time you guys bring up improper frame pacing it's hilarious lmao. I would be interested in seeing a video where a developer explains the difficulties of fixing improper frame pacing because I would assume there are still some difficulties if so many AAA games are releasing with improper frame pacing still ha.
IMPROPER FRAME PACING! I don't think I've ever laughed so hard watching a DF video before! Kudos to the editor!
From the lack of content
Being developed on Xbox one
A year delay
Now VRR and other graphical issues
I’m starting to think 343 doesn’t have the best engineers :( what a bummer…
I would LOVE to see 343 showcase what the split space engine on Xbox series X\S fully.
Is it the engine? Is it not what we thought it was? Is it the engineers that suck at coding ?
Seriously what is the root of the problem?
I can’t believe Xbox series X/S can’t handle high Fidelity cutting edge graphics.
The explosion feels like a splash
The attention to detail feels baked in
I can go on and on.
I wonder how the game would look like if they would focus only Xbox series X/S and have an extra year in development.
I personally believe this is the best Xbox one, S, X can literally do. The series X/S feels like an enhanced game and not necessarily native for the system.
14:09 this caught me off guard lmao😂
Halo: Infinite development
i play it on a Xbox One S over a 720p TV... i don't notice any of the problems you mention here xD
except for massive framerate drops at certain (not too common) points, but in general it's playable.
"seasons" in videogames looooool whatever.
That bit about the improper framepacing was hilarious.
Rip halo😢
I'm pleasantly surprised how well this runs on my ancient 1080ti/5800X3D in 2023 - almost 10 fps more on average compared to benchmarks from the time of it's release (open world). So they have either optimized this a ton or I'm missing something obvious here. With a little tweaking, 1440p@60fps is entirely possible without losing much visual quality. Pascal cards fared much worse a while back, I think.
Got a taste of all of this during my Xbox Game Pass...trial. Havent spend a penny and good thing I didn't! Microsoft can have my money for the campaign, once the game is fixed.
I want to point out as well that all of this is just fixing objective technical issues with the game that shouldn't have been there at launch. I can't even imagine how long it will be by the time we get Ray Tracing or proper next gen update. And even then I'd be willing to bet all we'll get is some sort of RT reflections update that is barely noticeable and nothing else.
Yeah, still not fixed on a lot of this stuff. Cut scene after Pelican Down is still a stuttery mess on Series X. Also had an issue with the Tac-Map (and all of the associated menus as well) running at about 20fps. A restart fixed it but I'm still watching it closely.
Should never has released in this state.
Devs keep delaying games and still delivering unfinished products.
Let's face it - Halo Infinite should have been delayed another year, it was clearly not ready, both the campaign and multiplayer are still not in the state they should be. Whoever planned for Infinite to be a Series X launch title must have had their head in the clouds! So sick of triple-A games being released in this Early Access form. Meanwhile, 343's management of the series has been mixed-poor from the start - if it was up to me, I'd give Halo to id software and have them let at it! The game at least wouldn't be a technical pisspot.
Why. If you don't like it. Don;'t play it.
Why should I have to wait to enjoy the fucking game just because you don't enjoy it now?
This "delay it" argument has never been justified. Let people enjoy things ffs. You have complete control over when YOU play it. You have no right to control when others get to play it.
Something that looks really weird on the PC version is the Anti Aliasing. It makes the game look soooooo weird at 1080p.
I still genuinely think Killzone Shadow Fall on my day 1 ps4 looks better than this does on my series X LOL
Still, I really like this game, it just isn't visually impressive at all. Lots of fun in the open world with that grappling hook tho.
That game deserves a native ps5 versión 4k 120fps support
Heya Digital Foundry, have you guys ever done a breakdown of Hades? i notice a lot of performance drops on my PS5, and a HUGE amount of frame drops, too the point of almost momentarily freezing if i spam an ability called Quake Cutter on the weapon Twin Fists
Sadly, still no optimization for AMD Polaris cards, so RX580 performs almost as bad as GTX1050, if not worse
They completely neglected the RX580. If I’m able to run half life alyx and red dead 2 then I should be able to run this.
Hell even my 1070 performs like ass in this game compared to when I play it on my xbox series S. Not a single chance my 1070 could pull off 120fps in multiplayer but the series S can.
Game: (Improper frame pacing even at 60fps)
Alex: Peace? No peace.
Halo is an expensive joke now.
If this was a Sony first party game you guys would be ripping it saying how unacceptable this is in this state.
Days Gone was ripped apart for less. The media killed its sequel.
I stopped playing because of the frame pacing issues. I mean even my 3060 pc struggles to hold a solid frame pacing and it just completely takes me out of the experience. I was also having this issue where there was a constant blur or glare and even when rebooting if I was in the open world it was constantly there. Had to stop playing for now
