Raspinen Videot As a French I found it pretty small.. Considering most of them are liquorice/salmiakki flavoured candies. You don't have many choices.:/
Guillaume Chaumette Not most - they just jump into your eyes, because I guess France doesn't have them :) And I'm not a salmiakki fan. I eat them, but they ke me thirsty, so not many at the time.
timomastosalo Well, I don't know because the only candies I could find where liquorice flavoured. The only good one I ate where Missä-X candies (and even in those there was a salmiakki flavour I think)
Cucumber is mostly water and is highly evaporative so without the plastic they'd be throwing most of them away in a short period of time. Same goes with bell pepper, they get wizened very easily. As for the lettuce the plastic container with soil keeps it fresh longer.
And I don't think it's wasteful. You'd probably place them into a plastic bag anyways right? I mean I wouldn't put a bare vegetable into a dirty shopping cart unless it's one that you have to peel before eating.
You could stick all the veggies in one bag and have the weight/price stickers stuck to that. And yes it is wasteful. Also what on earth would be so stickty in that cart you couldn't just wash away with water and some rubbing? And how likely would it be anyway. Hygiene, yes. Excessive hygiene that has already lowered our resistance as a specie, very much yes. You could also ask are people in other countries dying because some of them aren't wrapping everything in plastic? I don't think so. Considering how often people clean their fridges versus stores are cleaned every day, It's probable your fridge is dirtier than the floors on the stores. Thankfully natural, biodegreable wrappings are on their way, wood and hemp mainly. Also note that some stores are selling sustainable veggie bags you can wash (if you feel like it) and use again when you visit the store next time.
As a Finnish citizen and a student of sociology, this was very interesting to watch. Every oddity you point out is obvious to a Finn. The amount of candy in Finnish stores shouldn't be surprisng, as we have a major candy manufacturer in the country. The gambling aspect is something that has increased in grocery stores in the past few years. Nowadays you can even fill your lottery tickets at a grocery store! And yeah, the amount of rye bread and coffee is not very surprising either :)
I'm very happy to have the coffee. ;) I would say that the coffee and candy aspects I noticed aren't necessarily that different in the US. Perhaps I'm not the best 'representative' American in that regard. XD
Walmart, or any major store that sell groceries in America. ( I was just using Walmart as an example ). Personally moving to another country you're going to see things that are different, however everything I seen in this video, I can easily find in American supermarkets, and them some. Well, maybe besides that individually wrapped produce, but everything else. I assure you is there.

Yes, you weight always. There are no scales at the cashier. If you forgot then the cashier has to go to the fruit section to weight them and you can expect nasty looks from people behind you in the line. In some places you will go back to weight them. I like the system as you know the price beforehand. With items that are baked at the store there are annoying varying systems. In some places you weight them. In some you put them on the scale but the pricing is per item. In some the cashier just looks what you have and enders the codes. Same chains can have different systems in different places and when you forget.

Prisma is actually cheaper nowadays:P! Just had a discussion about it with some friends the other day. :P Some things might be more expensive, but the overall price comes lower in the end:)
it also depends on the area. In Helsinki everything is more expensive. For example a bag of Jenkki is usually 3,06e while in Hämeenlinna for example it's only 2,73 But yeah, I prefer Prisma too.
Being a Finn not living in Finland atm, the Finnish grocery stores are a thing I miss pretty much the most, and this just made me miss it all even more :')
Yes gambling is everywhere, thats state monopoly and the profit goes to culture, sport, social programs and such. And probably there will be even more candies in stores in the future, EU just ordered Finland to lower the tax on candies, it used to be higher for health reasons. Don't exactly remmeber why that was so bad thing to Brussels...
The profits from the machines go to actual charity and healthcare. Funds from the state lottery and betting go so spots (makes sense) and culture. The reason for the tax was simply to collect money. They did not even pretend to claim anything else. The reason for the EU ruling is that it was arbitrary. With such a tax domestic companies can change their products to avoid the tax when larger international ones cannot do so easily. Some products like the popular Kismet were legally biscuits and not candy. The tax had been in force for four years or so. Earlier in the 90s there also was a tax. Then xylitol candy was exempted. EU banned that also for obvious reasons.
There are mini-casinos in a lot of malls complete with blackjack tables and poker tournaments. And for some reason those often don't even check your age while the supermarkets always do it.
One thing you missed. That is if I have understood one thing from America correct... That is that the prices are tax incuded, So if you have 5€ you collect item which has a label 4.98€ at the register you pay 4.98. In america if you do that, on the register they add tax and the actual price is higer than the one on the shelf.
If it's the only thing you buy and you pay with cash you would actually pay €5, because smallest coin in use is 5 cent and total is rounded accordingly
The plastic packaging in cucumbers is good. They dont go bad as fast and you can recycle plastic in finland so its not too much waste (if you recycle.) Also I dont know is it weird but i have not seen it anywhere else but the potato boxes where there are like 4 different kind of huge "boxes" and then you choose the kind of potatoe you want and take some from that "box" and put it in a bag. That way you can choose the size of your potatoes and how many do you need.
Rye bread cant be bad, it simply cant. Specially vaasan ruispalat. Youd have to be a fool to think its bad. Mämmi is different, but it gets over hated, its not THAT bad, it just looks bad.
Jenna Laitinen Well white bread is Just bad, more like bun! 😂 But i guess some one can like that and still be finnish Im not going to defend mämmi more
I have heard texans speak and i don't hear anything unusual in Tyler's accent. Or maybe living here in Finland has weakened my "accent distinguishing skills" xD because listening to "Rally English" is painful 😂
From what I'm hearing here, I would say Tyler has a typical American accent, but I would not have guessed that he's from Texas because I generalize Texans with their own distinct "Southern accent" (yee-haw?). I'm sure Tyler is secretly judging all of us as he is reading this lol
Could be... Between the two of us (and other Tylighters on here) I totally think we could start a fan fiction series out of Tyler haha I say we keep commenting and blow up Tyler's notification box *evil laughs*
+CroSSLeSS they do not put the cucumber in a plastic bag in Finland? The plastic cover on food is better in hygienic, and the food stays fresh much more longer. i cant believe why they dont have these things in USA etc.
They actually started to sell imperfect cucumbers in Tesco , there are 2 in a plastic bag and are bent or slightly smaller , they sell like hot cakes and are something silly like 34p lol
Yes I'm from Great Britian too, I would say our sweets and crisps Isles are bigger than in Finland , this is why we are that FATTEST country in Europe.
This is how I always buy them in LA. They’re the English cucumber rather than the standard Persian kind. Their skin is thinner and tears easily without the plastic.
Some of the things you pointed out are not specifically Finnish, though. Like the thingies blocking your exit, or wrapped cucumbers, or beef and pork mixed meat. Those are all things happening in Germany, too, for example.
The gambling machines are still a very hot topic. Why is Finland the only country where I have seen machines in a grocery store or a small kiosk? RAY or Veikkaus is a state controlled monopoly business that maintains the gambling. They say "its better to control the gambling by ourselves than let other companies do that here". Also they give SOME of the profits to charity. Their marketing budget is around 60 million euros a year, which must be one of the largest marketing budgets in the whole country. They also try to find actively new ways for people to gamble. They even added playing with Visa card, while same time warning people about gambling habits. It sickens me how many elder people I see gambling their pensions away. Well educated people dont play because they understand the odds, so most of Veikkaus profits come from deprived citizens. Its disgusting.
The gambling is unusual (never seen it in any country I lived in or visited) but the wrapping is common in any Trader Joe's in the US. The lettuce with the plastic thing is called "live", both TJs and Whole Foods have them. The wrapped cucumbers as well. Not sure where you grew up that you find those things "weird."
I understand that salmiakki just isn't for everyone and it's kind of an acquired taste, but rye bread is wonderful! also I never realized it's weird to mix beef and pork, but now that I think about it... it does sound kind of odd.
I don't know why it would be odd. Very many minced meat recipes call for a mix, and e.g. meat balls come out better with a beef-pork mix. And guess what is quite common to make in the average home in Finland? Also, I find it a little bit funny that a person from a country where even bananas are peeled and sold in plastic containers comments on shrink wrapped cucumbers. =)
The thing in Finnish slots and video poker etc machines everywhere is that it's state owned monopoly and it loops the money to organizations which promote things such as health, mental health, suicide prevention and gambling problems.
Finnish store crowned the world's best supermarket 2019. A K-Citymarket in Järvenpää has been named the world's best supermarket at an awards ceremony in London. There were seven finalists in their category among 750 nominated grocery stores from 20 different countries. 🛒 😎
We wrap everything just because some people touch and do things with their hands before touching the foods so we wrap them so the bakteria wont get on the foods.
Also you are not permitted to buy beer etc from the store between 9 pm and 9 am. They even but a chains and locks on the doors of the (beer) refridgeraitors during that time 😃
In Finland we love candy because it takes thoughts away from the cold. And so called "sisu" means that we are brave and that we still go to the work even there would be a freezing hell outside.
EXPLANATIONS: enter exit thing so that you don't just grab shit and run. Wrapping because some american is going to touch everything, jk it's for hygiene. Coffee: Finland is the most coffee consuming country in the world (per person). Rye bread is simply a bigger thing here than in lets say usa. Candy: Finland has a major sweets company (Fazer) and some smaller ones like Panda for example. GAMBLING: RAY, state run, profits go to charity and it's obviously 18+. At least in southern finland, though, youngsters/ these people in finland we call "jonne" go gamble.
But all the gambling machines in Finland are ran by the state and the money goes to "charity" (for example for the sports for children who come poor families)! :)
So many times I've tried to replant the herbs, but always they wilt within 3-4 days, i think the little planter is supposed to keep them fresh longer for they aren't separated from their growing medium.
I was just in Finland for a trip and really liked the grocery stores. The prices of things seemed to actually correlate with health. Fruits and veggies prices per kg around the same price as they are in the states per lb.
- Cucumbers (and lot of other plant products) are wrapped in plastic because cucumbers evaporate water fast in room temperature. The plastic wrapping adds a lot of extra life to the cucumbers shelflife. - Pork is cheaper than beef.
I wonder what part of the US this guy came from because there's some comparisons he's made that doesn't quite match up with the stores where I live. First of all, candy aisles at my stores(the three I worked for in 20 years) were considerably larger than that Finnish Grocery Store. And not just one aisle either. There's sometimes several mini displays of candy all over the store, and about 5-6 "stands" of candy at every register. Secondly, most stores here while you can leave through both doors.. often one door is fixed where it will not open from both ends, forcing you to use the proper exit. So I want to say his comparison may totally be limited to where he came from and not an accurate representation how things are here. The wrapping of veggies though, yes that's something the US needs to adopt for sure.
Great video, loved it! As a finn, I can point out couple things: 1. We claim to be health concious country, but there's a lot of chemicals and especially sugar the food industry puts into our food. It's hard to find anything that is clean anymore. Our Obesity rates have increased in alarming rates in recent years. 2. A great number of finns actually hate Salmiakki. 3. We do wrap cucumber, but Paprika and other stuff, almost never, even I was surprised to see a single wrapped Paprika. 5. Finland is the world's number one coffee consumer when taking our population into account. 6. Grocery stores have gambling machines simply because we do not have big casino culture like in America. The original idea behind them was to give customers a cheap reason to throw their pennies away after shopping for food, but there are those who are addicted of course. Over 8 years ago, 15+ years old children could play these gambling machines before law was changed for them to be only for 18+.
Thank you! I noticed back in America that we also wrap our cucumbers in plastic - so I was kind of wrong there haha - but not the bell peppers unless they are in packages of two or more.
You were wondering how there is so much candy and how we Finnish people are still pretty healthy. The thing is that the other food we eat doesnt have added sugar and we dont really eat that much white bread. And also the amount of additives is imposed stirct in the law. Finnish people dont eat pancakes and peanutbutter-jelly sandwiches. And people often cook something pretty healthy at home instead of eating outside. We have couple fastfood chains like McDonalds and Subway. We have also our own Hesburger, which is the best. I love it. But eating out is not an everyday thing. It is more like everymonth thing. And also if we eat out often it is fast food because restaurants are expensive.
Yeah, well one thing about the gambling though: It's for charity. RAY (the gambling company) has a monopoly on gambling in Finland, and their profit is used to help the most disadvantaged people. They've helped with mental health issues, handicapped and visually impaired people and Finnish Red Cross, to name a few.
Canada (at least where I live) wraps individual cucumbers in plastic as well. I've also seen those plant your own romaine lettuce pots in grocery stores.
Like when u enter the store u can't exit well it makes stealing stuff harder. Paprika's and other vegetables are wrapped for plastic for hygiene reasons, but in bigger supermarkets u find them without plastic also :) The plastic base of lettuce is ecologist. Beef & Pork tastes better than just pork + is cheaper. Finns love rye bread + its healthy so that's why so much rye bread :D Finns love coffee and candy tho :) Gambling in grocery store people might live far away from the closest store so that's why.
Update, wine is now sold in grocery stores. It needs to be under a certain limit of alcohol content tho so it tends to be partially de-alc or blended drinks like sangria.
And o'h the new policy is consider open hours. It's not a long ago. When we get to keep our grocery stores open after 22pm. Before every Shop if not other wise sayd has to close their doors by 21pm.
Store owner has right to ask you stop filming, they can even throw you out. Store is not really a public space, it's private-owned space. The shop owners can choose their customers, they are free to make rules. BUT you don't have to show or delete the pictures, even though shop owner or guard asks.
I think those cucumbers are individually wrapped, because cucumber is ethylene-sensitive and it is keeping cucumber fresh longer around those ethylene producing bananas, tomatoes etc.
They are wrapped for hygiene reasons. You never know, someone might go through the store with a camera and touch everything.
pyllymysli 😂

Actually the best burger ever sold by a Finnish fast food chain was done in rye buns. That is only my opinion, of course.
Yeah but it needs to be soft rye bread otherwise all the mayo and shit spreads when you try to bite :D
+Jerry Keränen 😂😂😂
the lettuce stays fresh longer when it's with the roots and all. I would imagine
Being a Finn not living in Finland atm, the Finnish grocery stores are a thing I miss pretty much the most, and this just made me miss it all even more :')
They are individually wrapped because they last longer and they don't contaminate each other if some bad ones should get mixed in.
Yes gambling is everywhere, thats state monopoly and the profit goes to culture, sport, social programs and such. And probably there will be even more candies in stores in the future, EU just ordered Finland to lower the tax on candies, it used to be higher for health reasons. Don't exactly remmeber why that was so bad thing to Brussels...
it's a good thing. candy is too expensive.
You can think of gambling as a stupidity tax!
funny thing is that a nice slice of the profit goes to helping people with gambling addiction :D
If it's the only thing you buy and you pay with cash you would actually pay €5, because smallest coin in use is 5 cent and total is rounded accordingly
you did not show the place where ice cream is
I assume icecream just sits on shelves outside.
lol no
it isnt that cold all the time ;P
Niko Helln it's never cold in Finland. -20 isn't cold it's normal for us
EvilEagle Who said -20 is cold
The plastic packaging in cucumbers is good. They dont go bad as fast and you can recycle plastic in finland so its not too much waste (if you recycle.) Also I dont know is it weird but i have not seen it anywhere else but the potato boxes where there are like 4 different kind of huge "boxes" and then you choose the kind of potatoe you want and take some from that "box" and put it in a bag. That way you can choose the size of your potatoes and how many do you need.
I've never seen a wrapped pepper and I live in Finland.....
Same :DD
Titiboo samit
You'd better eat the rye bread with no complaints. Aversion to rye will be cured by force feeding mämmi.
...or verilättyjä......
Se ruisleipä syödään vikisemättä.
Rye bread cant be bad, it simply cant. Specially vaasan ruispalat. Youd have to be a fool to think its bad. Mämmi is different, but it gets over hated, its not THAT bad, it just looks bad.
Mikko Lappalainen am I not finnish? I hate mämmi and vaasan ruispalat.. lol😂😂
Jenna Laitinen Well white bread is
Just bad, more like bun! 😂 But i guess some one can like that and still be finnish
Im not going to defend mämmi more
you obviously haven't seen the candy aisle in an Amurican supermarket
jkjk, but really though, fun size, king size, family size, party size....
@Elina true, he claims he is from Texas but his accent is definitely not xD
I have heard texans speak and i don't hear anything unusual in Tyler's accent. Or maybe living here in Finland has weakened my "accent distinguishing skills" xD because listening to "Rally English" is painful 😂
From what I'm hearing here, I would say Tyler has a typical American accent, but I would not have guessed that he's from Texas because I generalize Texans with their own distinct "Southern accent" (yee-haw?).
I'm sure Tyler is secretly judging all of us as he is reading this lol
He actually does. He replied to several of my comments in his other videos, and if you look below, he just replied someone else today O_O
Could be... Between the two of us (and other Tylighters on here) I totally think we could start a fan fiction series out of Tyler haha
I say we keep commenting and blow up Tyler's notification box *evil laughs*
England our cucumbers are like that too, you just don't need more than one cucumber hald the time
+CroSSLeSS they do not put the cucumber in a plastic bag in Finland? The plastic cover on food is better in hygienic, and the food stays fresh much more longer. i cant believe why they dont have these things in USA etc.
I have never seen anyone do that :P
They actually started to sell imperfect cucumbers in Tesco , there are 2 in a plastic bag and are bent or slightly smaller , they sell like hot cakes and are something silly like 34p lol
Yes I'm from Great Britian too, I would say our sweets and crisps Isles are bigger than in Finland , this is why we are that FATTEST country in Europe.
This is how I always buy them in LA. They’re the English cucumber rather than the standard Persian kind. Their skin is thinner and tears easily without the plastic.
Beef and pork mixed is not unusual. One can find that in the US, too.
i have never seen that pepper plastic packanigngingg
Helsinki things
finnish dump fuck
Common in Sweden aswell :P
are u from sweden
It is common in Iceland and everybody I know think it's ridiculous and many stores have reduced plastic packaging by a lot.
Many of the things you pointed out are common all over europe
As a Canadian, this seems extremely normal...
Some of the things you pointed out are not specifically Finnish, though. Like the thingies blocking your exit, or wrapped cucumbers, or beef and pork mixed meat. Those are all things happening in Germany, too, for example.
And the States.
Ground beef can get really dry so the pork is in there to make the meat more juicy. At least, that's what I'm guessing.
The mix seems to always be cheaper than beef only variety, so I guess that's also one reason.
Pork is cheaper than beef so that's why it's cheaper.
fervid84 pork tastes better and not as bland as beef. That's why in Asia the two are packaged together.
In US grocery stores You have only uneatable junk food... :D
The thing in Finnish slots and video poker etc machines everywhere is that it's state owned monopoly and it loops the money to organizations which promote things such as health, mental health, suicide prevention and gambling problems.
Iceland is the same with the candy. Do they have black licorice ice cream in Finland? I love that stuff, best ice cream flavour ever.
Oh yes here is and it's soo good
Salmiakki flavout ice cream.
mmmm it's the best
I try to tell Canadians about it and how nice it is, they just stare at me like I'm telling them the earth is flat or something, haha
yes we have liqourice ice cream
James Pawson licorice taste like medicine.
I never really think about the things you pointed out, for me its normal. Being a Finn you know😂
they're wrapped like that cause, idk, someone might go in there with a camera and touch everything..
Also you forgot to mention about the prices. I believe in US the price tags aren't included with the tax, but here in Finland they are.
Dang, I think I must've been Finnish in a previous life....this place looks great.
beef and pork mixed is pretty standard here in germany too
Finnish store crowned the world's best supermarket 2019.
Mixed ground beef and pork is common in Europe. You can find it everywhere in grocery stores and your local butcher.
You can get the beef and pork mix in the US too, only it comes with veal as well. It's called meatloaf/meatball mix.
Also you are not permitted to buy beer etc from the store between 9 pm and 9 am. They even but a chains and locks on the doors of the (beer) refridgeraitors during that time 😃
Yes,....if a customer is cought with liquor after hours on store premises, every by mistake, it's big fines for the store. Even one second past.....
At least in southern finland, though, youngsters/ these people in finland we call "jonne" go gamble.
these types of videos make me feel unique
I'm Finnish so this is not weird for me.
This is the kind of video I like a lot :) It's nice to know how you percieve that which to a Finn is mundane.
They are wrapped because when people look are they good, without wrap, you would have a cucumber with millions of people's fingerprints on it
Still, even our gambling is about equality because most of the money is used for charity.
"please let me stay in your country"
ahahaha lol
Canada also individually wraps cucumbers, that's not weird. And we have a ton of rye breads and other breads.
Good points, never thought about them
Your vlogs are rlly nice and well edited. Also you're really funny :)
You forgot to tell how to buy cigarettes in Finland. In large supermarkets you have to know the number of the cigarette pack.
"What we do here is go back" instantly know the song every time it's played.
I'm so happy to see this video. Now I can use it to explain why grocery shopping here feels so strange!
Vedä käteen! (Nice work man!)
Okei...?
NOME sä et ny ymmärtäny😂😂
mitä ihmettä
Luna ilmiselvästi tarkka käännös
Yeah
- Pork is cheaper than beef.
the gambling machines are owned by the goverment and most of the profit goes for charity
Actually the high officials who are 'in charge' of those machines take a sizeable chunk off that pie for doing... nothing.
I just randomly found this video and as a Finn, I had to watch it. I think your channel is pretty awesome. Subscribed!
Never seen anyone have so much fun alone.
As a finn, I can point out couple things:
Thank you! I noticed back in America that we also wrap our cucumbers in plastic - so I was kind of wrong there haha - but not the bell peppers unless they are in packages of two or more.
dude finnish bread is literally the best bread i have ever had
I giggled when you kissed the coffee package. Basically how I react to coffee.
Can't find the coming out video. Could somebody link it, please?
Canada (at least where I live) wraps individual cucumbers in plastic as well. I've also seen those plant your own romaine lettuce pots in grocery stores.
I dont think any of these things is weird. :DD
Because you live in Finland...
Vici are*
It's not important grammar police
Like when u enter the store u can't exit well it makes stealing stuff harder. Paprika's and other vegetables are wrapped for plastic for hygiene reasons, but in bigger supermarkets u find them without plastic also :) The plastic base of lettuce is ecologist. Beef & Pork tastes better than just pork + is cheaper. Finns love rye bread + its healthy so that's why so much rye bread :D Finns love coffee and candy tho :) Gambling in grocery store people might live far away from the closest store so that's why.
bell peppers*
Update, wine is now sold in grocery stores. It needs to be under a certain limit of alcohol content tho so it tends to be partially de-alc or blended drinks like sangria.
I just randomly clicked on the video and it seems that's my exact grocery store from last summer...
Hey Tyler did you visit maunulanyhteiskoulu a few weeks ago?
I did!
+Tyler Walton Hah you were in my math class funny that I stunbled across your vlog and cool videos you do👍
I study at maunulan yhteiskoulu!!
And o'h the new policy is consider open hours. It's not a long ago. When we get to keep our grocery stores open after 22pm. Before every Shop if not other wise sayd has to close their doors by 21pm.
Not every shop. Lähikaupat or whatever were open until 23-24
Rifian_one All the three Prismas in Jyväskylä, Central Finland switched to 7-23 opening times after the law changed.
Rifian_one you don't combine the twenty-four hour clock and "am" and "pm"
my near prisma is 24hrs open
Your reaction was fun. I am girl from Finland, and I love these kind of reactions to our country. Keep doing these! ^_^
I'm finnish and when you talk about those things about our grocery stores i'm like this is so right
PUREST FOOD IN THE WORLD 2017= FINLAND!!!!
GOOGLE IT!!
Why would you be nervous about filming in superstore? It is public place and you can take photos and videos in public places.
You know you wouldn't get in trouble for just filming in the store, no one will stop you
can you do a finnish Candy tasting video?
