One of the great American writers. The interview over coffee, done in black and white, is perfect.

These fraught days I often forget there are gravelly types like James Ellroy around.

It takes decades of writing to develop the capacity to be this honest with oneself.

Reading “My Dark Places”. Very revealing memoir. A lot of criminal cases are mentioned related to his mothers 1958 murder. He did some very thorough research on her case.

He’s something of an easy author to get into, strictly in the sense that most of his book chapters are short - some chapters being only a page long. I judiciously read at least a chapter a day of any book to unwind, and James Ellroy is great at serving my compulsion - especially when I have a particularly busy day.

      Dipsos are drunks.

From the word dipsomania. The root word is dipsa, meaning thirst in Greek and mania, Latin for obsession. Dipsomaniac is an alcoholic or drunkard. Someone who must drink a lot without self-control.

He's a bit too much for the 21st century political correct toady. Too real, too honest, too raw. He doesn't need to change, and you shouldn't judge him or 'his need to grow' as a writer. He is not for everyone, in fact I would say, he is not for most, normal people. But he is something different, something unique. Sometimes I think he's brilliant, other times I think he's crazy. Maybe a little of both.
