You have a way of explaining things in a way that vibes with me. Thinking of your review of the lemon note in Rochas Moustache 1949 and then this review of Femme about the "dynamic range" of the scent. That is exactly how I feel about Femme except I never would have thought to describe it that way. It smells almost the same from start to finish which is fine with me. It is a challenging scent for me but I am coming around to liking it more every time I wear it. Thanks for the review.
I adore Femme; such a gorgeous, feminine fragrance. I heard about it from the lovely Agnes Eva, whose signature it used to be. I have two different versions of the ETD in the house - the gold cap (my own) and the black cap (a gift to my daughter). The black cap version predated the gold and has less of the cumin-like quality and I kind of prefer it to the more cumin-heavy gold cap version - however both are still wonderful and the reformulation was supposedly one of perfumery’s success stories as far as reforms go. I never thought of Femme as possibly unisex but now you mention it I don’t see why a man couldn’t wear it despite the name (the overall character rather than the name are what count) - after all I’m a woman and I like wearing Rochas Moustache. As always a nuanced and perceptive review.
Hello Sue, I also love wearing Moustache Original 1949, and you are the first other woman I am hearing this from.... Edmond Roudnitska is a magician! I also adore Femme.
Hi. I have a question - I've never smelled Femme. I'm a man. I can blind buy either the gold cap or the black cap. Which one would you recommend for men? Thanks.
You are SO cool, Pep. I LOVE how you wear what you love no matter the gender it's marketed for. You are clearly comfortable in your own skin, and I find you an inspiration. Thank you!
Great review. Love the perspective of 'dynamic range' here: food for thought. I cherish both Mitsouko and Femme, and have them in different iterations. Femme edp with the black cap (90s) and a shapely small splash bottle of pure perfume. Zoologist's Civet - presented, decidedly, as unisex - is remarkably similar, but in terms of dynamic range perhaps closer to Mitsouko, and overall somewhat more...chaotic; like a busy, dark stew, Arabie-style (Lutens).
I smelled this a whole back and loved it and I don’t know why I haven’t revisited. It’s on my list to get a vintage one. You’ve renewed my interest! -Chris
This review has inspired me too to get a vintage! I love the current version already. Camille, have you seen the talk/discussion Michel Roudnitska has presented at the Osmothèque about his father's work and which he has uploaded on his utube channel? (Chris ,I am only addressing Camille here because it is in french, not for any other reason) It is wonderful, they speak about all of Edmond's perfumes.
I also went back and forth between Mitsy and Femme and your dynamic range comparison was perfectly spot on, it was a lightbulb moment when I heard you say it!
Thank you. Allan from Sydney here. I ware guys and gal's frags. There really is no barrier I find. My fav and sig was YSL champagne but it's so pricey now I found Femme a good alternative. However out of curiosity I tried Rochas Tocade and fell immediately in love a few days ago and it will be my new sig frag. X
What a beautiful sensible and elaborate review of Femme! Thank you for it. I am amongst the crowd who think that everyone can and should wear what they love regardless of its marketing. However if someone is not so sure about that I believe that the current version of Femme is one of those scents they can still wear. The spices, balms and the chypre quality lend themselves to it. The original Femme however was an aldehydic floral. Edmond Roudnitska said o himself. Like you I adore how sensibly the oakmoss has been placed in the composition.. The whole of it is so well rounded, delicious, sensual. I have no idea how they are able to produce this at the price it is being sold for nowadays. I had the privilege to smell the contents of a perfectly preserved vintage bottle of the parfum de toilette. We could not take any perfume out though. So I can give that first impression only. It was less spicy and the plum note was just amazing. There also was a beautiful clarity about it. The similarity with modern Femme was absolutely there too. I could not distinguish any particular floral note. It seemed so well blended.
Thanks for the useful insights. The 'dynamic range' is what I needed to better understand my preferences! Femme is probably not for me, although I would like to smell it after you being so enthusiastic! But I did get Madame Rochas, a floral aldehyde, it arrived today and on the blotter I find it very promising. Soapy and fresh, but with some depth in it too. 60ties chic, I guess.
Thanks for the review. I've never smelled this perfume, and I'm trying to figure out which version should I blind buy - the black cap or the golden cap. Both are available where I live. If anyone here could shed some light about the differences in scent, I'd be very grateful. Btw, I'm a man, so if one of these versions leans more masculine, I'd like to know.
I like your style, happy new subscriber. I was searching to see what I could find on Femme Rochas,, and I am a little cross at RUclips for not recommending your channel to me, I mean ... they seem to know what I like... so this one is entirely from my own research and effort 😁😎
This is more masculine by today's standards - I'd love to try a vintage version - the modern one could be a little richer, and there's room for some more floral notes, but Mitsouko, which is often mentioned along with Femme is my all time favourite. This Femme still smells like it's from another era. The first squirt from the new Femme bottle was a very disappointing cumin blast, but the subsequent sprays were a million times better. I've found this happening a lot, lately - the juice that has sat in the atomiser straw is compromised - whether by the plastic, or escape of the most volatile fractions, I'm not sure. Nice review, thank you! Edit: having bought more bottles and increased my experience, this perfume needs about 8 sprays releasing to get air into the bottle, a good shake and leaving for a week to wake it up: the cumin steps back and the other notes come alive. I have 5 bottles - different batches - and they are all quite different in the balance of the notes, although clearly the same perfume... Since the first blasts of a new bottle smell off, you can often find nearly new bottles on Ebay at good prices. Love it...
Gorgeous, gorgeous scent! It's so spicy and rich, especially for an EDT. If I were blindfolded and didn't know the name of the perfume, I would not argue with anyone who claimed this was for men. I'm in the anyone can wear anything camp but still recognize perfumes that are traditionally gendered one way or the other, and this falls squarely in unisex territory. Have you tried Apercu by Houbigant? Apercu kind of lent me some training wheels to appreciate Mitsouko, which I still find challenging, but less daunting now.
Hola Victor, yo adquiri este perfume recientemente pero la verdad este aroma no es para mi. Lo compre a ciegas (gran error). Aceptarias recibir una muestra ?
Im trying to make friends with Femme de Rochas but what I get from opening to mid is a skanky dirty leather, then the amber dry down is great but I just can't enjoy that leather note.
RuthAnn I feel the same. I was exited to wear this perfume, but my first impression was like wow! too much for my nose. I just couldn't appreciate it 😒 but I couldn't understand why. So I think it must be that leather note now that you mention it.
Everybody has at least one declutter regret lol. Try to remember why you got rid of it before you get it again. I talk myself into and out of perfumes a few times a day lol 🤷🏼♂️
The best review of Femme on here. Perfectly explains the beauty of the fragrance and the suitability of it to be worn by men. Great stuff and thx 👍

I love your description of a chypre - I think that’s what attracts me to them. It’s not about one note but the final product. I need to smell this.

Femme deserves an EDP to be relaunched. At least it's quite well preserved to these days.

Interesting take on the cumin note, Pep. I'll need to wear it again to see if I get the birch tar feel.
