You just cannot fake that good old Mountain Soul sound. Few have it...Kathy Mattea, Lorretta Lynn and Patty Loveless...and of coarse Ms. Dickens 'god rest her sweet soul". This makes me so homesick for my old homeplace in West Virginia.
This gracious lady actually lived and experienced the songs she wrote and sang. What talent.
Yes she did and so did Lorretta Lynn. From rags to riches but never forgot their roots.
She experienced a life that she wrote about in those songs. Authentic, human, beautifully created and performed.
Just found my first Hazel Dickens video today. Thank you God !!!
A truly fine working-class hero.We need more of her type now.Her voice is pure magic.
wow, very emotional. sang with so much feeling. Just the love from a country upbringing The way it used to be.
Hazel was one of the good 'uns. She sang that same old mountain way the way my Mama did. I kick myself 50 years too late for not recording my Mother and Father. I even had access to a professional tape machine but I was off doing my own thing. Kids do the dumbest things.
My mom on the piano and her lifelong best friend Naomi singing those old time gospel songs. Wish I just had one recorded
Most of us have those type memories. youth is stupid and self serving. Don't beat yourself up.
Life is to short for regrets, rejoice in your memories and pass them on to the next generation xxx
@@dustbat Aman. In order to become a fully functional, if life lets you, human being, there are those Youth Years. We all have regrets, all of us. All you can do is move on, the past sits still for no one.
Beautiful and truthful song ...lost my Momma in 2019 ...song hits hard . Msy we all see our Mommas again ..and they takes us by their hand ...
My Mama had the most gentle, soft and loving hands I ever knew. All 8 of us kids talked about Mamas hands. Hard for anyone to let go of that kind of love!
4:40 😮 HOW Fortunate YOU WERE. NOT ALL MOTHER'S ARE WHAT A MOTHER Should BE.
Much love and appreciation for you Hazel. May you again feel the touch of Mama's hand.
RIP.
One of the best! Thank you Hazel R.I.P
I said goodbye to that plain little mining town
With just a few old clothes that had made the rounds I knew I was leaving a lot of things that were good But I thought I’d make a break while I still could
As I look back to wave once more
To Mama crying in the door
For me and for what the world might have in store For she knew I’d never be her little girl no more She was drifting back to another time
When she was young and hoped to nd
A better life than what her Mama’s had been
And it was hard to let go of Mama’s hand, my Mama’s hand
Chorus:
One old paper bag lled with hand me downs
A plain old country girl raised on gospel sounds
With only the love she gave me, pride in what I am
And it was hard to let go of Mama’s hand, my Mama’s hand
I thought of all the love she gave, thought of all the years she slaved To try and make this run down shack a home
A dream that really died before it was born
But she pulled us through the hardest times
And made us hold our head up high
A gift we carry with us all our lives
For we were oh so special in Mama’s eyes
As I looked back down that dusty road
To Mama and her heavy load
I knew what I was leaving I would never nd again
And it was hard to let go of Mama’s hand, my Mama’s hand
Thank you for the lyrics. I just discovered Hazel’s songs last winter. I love that old time sound.
I listened to this gracious lady every night and share with my children . She had a hard upbringing, worked hard and accomplished much.

Beautiful heartfelt song and beautiful voice. Reminds me of my mama singing for me when I was a child, I remember a few songs she sang from her heart, so precious❤️ Lost her many years ago when I was in my mid 20s, still have a part of her with me, she lives on in me but miss her every day. None like our mamas, no one can ever fill their shoes for us. God miss her dearly. Good memories, thank God for them.
Beautifully said....at 78 years, I look back and now know that my mama was my best friend. Holding her had will be my last thought in this world.
Ive only recently found this gem in the rough. Love her!!
I JUST LOVE HER MUSIC, HER SONGS TOLD HER REAL LIFE & THOSE AROUND HER, RIP ANGEL
A great songwriter. Those '80s albums are classics that have stood the test of time.
I am the last of 10 kids 8 Girls 2 boys I lost my mom back in 96 I lost my dad and 1990 he had black lung your song touches me in my heart God bless you
Hazel in her way of supporting the union people especially the U M W A was another mother Jones she would show up at union rallies all over, She could brighten the day.
😂 I am a union person through and through. I have always supported the unions, card carrying Teamster, in an era where women were not teamsters.
I think that this song/story beats Coal Miners Daughter hands down. They are both great stories but the raw talent of this is phenomenal.
This song reminds me of when I left home, it crosses genders, I am still blessed in my 60s to have my Mamma with me.
Yes, Lady you are more blessed. Lost mine 5 months ago. I am 51. She was the last of my immediete family. This world will have to had tllted otherwise. Never be the same again Till Jesus comes for us.
