I released, from the US ARMY in 1978. I remember that, The Knack, was playing on the west coast. They already had a very good following. The fans couldn't wait for tickets to the places where The Knack, were playing. I was 25 when this song hit the charts. Their sound was infectious. I was lucky to see them play. The Knack deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. This band will not disappoint you.
There is not a single bad song on their debut album, they are all fantastic and Doug was such a charismatic frontman. I really love their cover of Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat".
I love the shocked look at her face. The My Sharona guitar solo and licks is one of the best in all of rock history and thats the look you should have after hearing for the first time! I knew it blew me away.
The song is about Sharona Alperin. She was 16/17 years old when she met Doug Fieger (lead singer) introduced by Doug's girlfriend. Doug was 9 years older. He dumped his girlfriend and they dated for a year. She now is a real estate agent in Los Angeles. I've seen the Knack many times. It was a guilty pleasure because I was major into the L:A punk scene.
I read or heard on the radio an interview with her. Decades later she would tell someone her name and she would say Sharona, and they would reply “ oh, as in my…”. Well actually…

I’m living proof!! You two can turn all my bad days around! I’m 8,000 miles away from home in Thailand teaching English and was feeling alone. No more! Thank you for all you both bring to the reactions! Priceless!! ❤️
The Knack was considered a one hit wonder because this song was such a huge hit that people kind of got sick of them. But nearly every one of their songs are good or great. This band was so good and so tight that there was fights from the record labels as to who would sign them. Rumor has it, that they recorded the first album in one take! One of my favorite bands of the '80s. I was lucky enough to see them in concert a little later in their career and they sounded just like the record!
Bruce Gary is a next level percussionist and Berton Avere is a criminally underappreciated guitarist. "Get the Knack" is one of the best debut albums of the 1970s.
Wow! I've always loved this song. Brings back great memories of being 18 years old with a great group of work friends! But I've never seen it performed live! They were fantastic! This song is like a Rollercoaster that doesn't ever slow down!
Hi Shawn and Mel wow, does this song bring back memories. In 79 I was in high school. This song was everywhere! Whenever I hear the song I am immediately taken back to the summer and the beach and the sound of this song blaring from car stereos and the loudspeaker on the pier. This kind of music is kind of a hybrid of New Wave. Disco was starting to become more mainstream, even parents were listening to it and taking Disco dancing lessons so my "in-between" generation needed something more "Cool" and then came New Wave. New Wave was mostly rock and roll with a little Punk thrown in. It was fresh and different. And as the 80's came in it inspired a totally different decade of music. I wish that I had a time machine so that you could stand out on the pier with me in 1979, smell the copper tone sun tan lotion, and popcorn, and hear "My Sharona" played through tinny sounding speakers with the waves and the laughter of children in the background. I think you would love it too. Have a great day guys. As always, you just keep getting better and better :)
Shawn, I loved your reaction when I requested this the other night and y'all played it. You said this is going on your song list and that y'all might do a reaction. Well you're doing the reaction and you're still going nuts over this song! Heck yeah!
OK- SERIOUSLY, I am a worrywart, but is am terribly concerned that we have not heard from Shawn and Mel in over a week. Did I miss them saying they were going on vacation or something? Can ta all comment to this and let me know? Thanks!
This one time, at band camp… yes, I went to band camp in the summer of 79’ and I think this was the only song anyone played on the juke box every evening.
I don’t know if you already have heard it because this is LITERALLY the first video I have seen by you two. But I tell every “music reaction people” to react to “ Inca roads by frank Zappa” you will not regret it
I was so so so busy that year. 1975 - 2001 Hardly had time to listen to radio except in the car going to work or coming home. I might have heard this a few times, but I don't know why I don't really remember it. I had two little kids 1979 to drop at day care, one baby dropped off at his grandma's. On the road, working in office, shopping, cleaning. Basically exhausted all the time. I really could have needed that song at home on the radio while I cleaned or did laundry to keep me going. Now I am 73 years old and dancing in my chair, no little ones around to grab my attention. Not much driving anymore either. LOL
When the solo went supersonic I felt like Shawns older brother watching him experience it for the first time. That Rif ruled in its day from its sonic awesomeness.
A similar(?) song in the one hit wonder kind of out there by itself is Hocus Pocus by Focus. The live version is an 11 out of 10 and you guys will wonder if music will ever be the same.
LOL I love this song, but so many people now go back and listen to the lyrics years later and go..."uhhh...that's creepy af." Same way they do for some songs from The Police and other bands.
I'm an old-time rock and roller and had their album way back when (end of the 70's?). When I found this live version a few years back I was BLOWN AWAY! The band only had 2 or 3 good songs though...but this one is phenomenal!
This one takes me back. When I was a very little girl my brother built a roller disco in our basement with things from Radio Shack. We played those Ronco and K-Tel compilation albums you could order by snail mail. This was a pretty popular hit with the neighbor kids in the basement...all skating in circles around the water heater, with flashing LEDs and Christmas lights and a couple 6 inch mirrorballs
When we were done doing the dance that went with this from the movie, Reality Bites, we would fall out on the floor panting. The song is so hype, it really gets you going!
This song was released in 1979. Here it is 43 years later and it's still 🔥🔥🔥!!!

Ya but I count it as a 80s song. Its awesome. My wife loved it. Always have it in the car ready to thump.
One of the most underrated guitar solos in music history
you know it Joe !
I don't know what you're complaining about, I rate this solo among the best ever!
@@DBAUG don't mind 688 , that term is used more than not- he doesn't get it

One of the best ever guitar solos in a pop song! "Good Girls Don't" is the Knack's next biggest hit.
Berton Averre with the most underrated guitar solo in history!
I like Good Girls Don't better than My Sharona.
Definitely, that solo is so underrated. I always had that solo in my top 20 favorites!
But I do. LOL

It was the facial expression when she realised it wasn't a 20 second solo 😄
My senior year in high school was 1979-80. This song was in constant rotation during that time and always takes me back.
Yeah we are old. I’ll be 60 in April 🤦♂️
@@TheJohnnywbred I hit that milestone in December!
You’re a year older than I.
Sharona Alperin was in my Tennis class at Fairfax High in my Junior year.
Two other great songs from that debut album were "Good Girls Don't"--which is as wild as you might think; and "Frustrated"
@Brad Sullivan- I actually forgot about that song Good Girls Don't,😚 but I do!
Love Good Girls Don't. If this song is reacted to I would would prefer the dirty version not the radio version

This song was, is, and will always be FIRE. I wore this single out. Add it to your road trip list-it’s a top-down kind of jam.
That Guitar Solo!!!!! F*CKING EPIC!
My favorite song by them is "Good Girls Don't - But I do!"
I like it BETTER than My Sharona

This song needs to be played LOUD when you’re driving, preferably in a sports car going fast.
Followed by I Can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar!
The whole of the album "Get The Knack" is , imo, fantastic!

It hit the charts when I was 14 like a thunderbolt. We LOVED it!
Shawn was digging those lyrics- "Such a dirty mind, I always get it up for the touch of the other kind..." :-)
You mean ‘touch of the younger kind’
When this song came on the radio back in '79, i would air guitar everytime
For years and still today ,after this song was famous , if your girl did something for you or anything ,you would say Thank You My Sharona !
Such an iconic song! 😍Banger, baby!!!
probably one of my favorite solos in history along with Honeyman Scott's solo on Kid.
