This has got to be on of the best channels I've found in awhile. I really love your explanations, thought process, and the way you teach without any sort of "amazing revelation" or "DO THESE 5 THINGS TO IMPROVE FAST" and click baity things like that. Just good old fundamentals, and the results speak for themselves. Great work, great video, all your videos help a ton for an aspiring artist. Cheers.
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Yes, I hate click-baity stuff too so I made these from things I've learned through the years. I'm so glad you liked the video
As everyone else is saying in the comments, I am extremely grateful I've found your channel. I just watched your "why colour studies are so important" video and went right into the egg study and I just finished painting it, very proud of the result. The little comments and explanation along the video is what is really valuable to me, it makes me think I'm in an actual classroom getting a lesson from a good teacher, compared to other type of art videos that are a little more structured, fast, and just put out the information without really seeing all the ways to apply it, those videos feel entertaining but at the end I just forget everything I've heard. I feel like I will learn a lot from you. Looking forward to more videos in the future!
The YT algorithm gods have smiled upon me again by showing me your videos. I’ve watched so much educational art content on YT, and I can say that your videos met me right where I’m at in my art journey. Keep it up!
@@LightingMentor I even started using the turpentine brush. Still trying to get my head around the weird color mixing or strange setting on it, but enjoying it so far.
How do you only have 4k subs? You are amazing, and a fantastic teacher. I followed along with the egg colour study and was pretty happy with the result for the first time. I even used a bit of purple in shadows. This Grogu is such a cutie
Thank you SO MUCH for this video, and this entire channel. It's so immensely valuable not just to watch you paint, but to hear the thought process behind it, how you make decisions, what you focus on. I've learned so much in just a couple of these color studies. @_@
I always search on YT on how to paint colors but none of those really helped me. I struggled with colors and never even want to put on my art, just black and white. I'm really glad I found your channel sir! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about colors. I'm now following your video tutorials in ColorStudies playlist. Hoping for more subscribers on your channel!
i've got your very first video over and over in recomendations for months now, what a fool i was not to watch it instantly the first time i saw it, it's the best channel i've seen so far
Bought an iPad to get into digital art and have gotten extremely discouraged from being so overwhelmed on where to start, between form, line work, lighting, brushes etc. No other channel teaches like yours does and I am finally for the first time in my art journey feeling confident and excited again. Thank you.
This was an amazing lesson. I'm amazed at how good mine turned out. Your explanations are really excellent. So calm and descriptive, just the right things. Thank you!
This was great. I hope you keep doing them. Colour is where I struggle the most I think. I don't trust myself to pick colours. I am a fan of one layer too.
Your videos are really amazing. After the first video I watched, (your first one) I immediately subscribed. I've been looking for a video to study lighting and didn't know where to start. Lots of videos say the same thing over and over, and your videos are amazing. I especially love this type of video where it's real time. Thank you!
That’s great, this channel is gold, thank you so much! I love procreate and using one layer only too- it brings the process closer to the traditional painting :D more intuitive.
Thank you! I'm so glad you found this helpful. Yes, painting on only one layer keeps things focused on the art and not getting lost in too many tools. It's especially important for beginning artists to not get lured into tools, but rather focus on the key principles of art
Wow! This was so informative and helpful! I am an oil painter, and have learned sooo much from you that I can use (in Procreate) to compose my paintings. Thank you so much for creating this, and I can't wait to see each new video you create! Thank you!🥰
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! I haven't been painting much lately due to stress and this channel is just what I needed to get going again. ❤
You are most welcome!! I hope you can find a great sense of calm while painting. I find a sense of calmness when doing studies and it lowers my stress, so I hope you can find that same flow in it too Cornelia. :)
That was cool. I have not seen you before and I don’t use RUclips very much but I just saw you come up in my stream while I was jamming and you brought the biggest smile. I wrote a whole thing. But that was last video and now you are saying what i was going to say along with describing my 2 year study of light using powdered pigments … zinc sulphide and various mica and adjacent reflectives and … well i have made my own kind of holographic matte thing it is kinda cool. I had a hypothesis and i kept working with various mediums trying to develop the most layers, with light as a unifying element, but in a way that kinda creates movement…oh but yes I was mostly just writing longstyle to say that you should clock procreate and also try out using ai to make brushes.
You're most welcome friend! Yes, art is good for the soul if we can have grace on ourselves (not get frustrated as we learn but just take the time to enjoy the process). You can do it my friend!
Great tutorial, great channel overall. I did both the egg study and now this Grogu one and I'm really happy with the result, and I definitely learned some things along the way.
Wow. I am SO inspired to go try this now!! Thanks, Jeremy!! I really hope you record more of these tutorials. If ever you think of gatherings all of these into a class, I'd be the first to sign up! Really good stuff!
Oh wow, a procreate video!!! Thank you for making these and this is just what i needed :) I really love your method and takes away all the pressure on getting the lines correct before coloring and this was a major problem for me that i was about to give it all up. Your video's have given me new inspiration and cant wait to apply this ASAP.
You are terrific! Any chance a series of using the basics to procreate? You are so fantastic perhaps they will back your efforts to spread the possibilities around!
Hi Jeremy! Thanks so much for sharing your process and letting us work along side you. Was any of this process sped up at all or is this all in real time?
I really love your contents, btw there are reason that you decided to coloring red warm color instead of storng yellowy highlight the ground between grogu and bottle? I quite surprised watcing your process, i thought you will gonna paint but you didn't , and it totally works really well.
Hi! Once again thank ypu so much for sharing your knowledge. I was searching for the "add" layer mode in photoshop but I didn't find it. Which one would it be for ps? Thanks c:
Hi Jeremy, thank you for the video. I use Procreate since I don’t have Adobe. I noticed you have the brushes copied to your personal collection. Have you modified the brush settings as well? If so, can you please share the settings. I ask because my Turpentine brush doesn’t apply enough paint it seems and is very blends if that makes sense. Thanks again!
I don't think I adjusted any settings on my turpentine brush. Yes, it takes some getting used to and I find I have to do lots of little strokes to get the color down. It's a bit different from the brushes I use in Photoshop, but I still love the slight texture of the brush.
Shoot, my previous comment got deleted becasue I pasted a link to my grogu and it seems youtube doesn't like that. Anyway I wanted to tell you that your channel is really cool and hope you keep uploading in the future!
Hi Jan! I'm so glad you found this helpful and that you tried doing the Grogu painting! That's great! Keep creating! I'll try to get more videos out there soon
Hello Jeremy ! I hope you can still respond to my question even though this video was posted a year ago. What’s the best traditional art medium can i use to do color studies aside from using digital art apps? I do love the flexibility that ipad gives me but i cant move away from doing traditional art because I still love the tactile sensation of using real art materials. I dont bring my ipad with me outside all the time . I still enjoy bringing my sketchbook with me whenever i go out. Thank you! Im a fan of your work and i always rewatch your videos to learn and improve my art skills. 😊 Im grateful you are sharing so much valuable information here on YT for free. ✨ Btw I hope you can do a monthly subscription of your courses soon 😁
Hi Donita! I don’t often use traditional paint myself any more as digital has become so useful but I would suggest gouache as a great medium for color studies. It is inexpensive and dries quickly, so a lot of friends use it for doing quick color studies outdoors. I love oil paints too, but they take weeks to dry. I hope this helps! And yes, I hope I can someday switch to a subscription model too but I don’t have enough content made to draw enough people yet where I can survive with that model. Maybe in a year or two it can make sense.
Yup, I just did the regular iOS screen recording while I painted. Seems to work pretty well. Procreate can also play back your painting at the end too, thought it's sped way up
Thank you! So glad you found my channel too. I hope it's helpful. The reason I suggest starting color studies as only a single layer is to keep people from getting distracted by technology. Too often people art thinking about brushes, tools, and processes rather than focusing on the core principles of art. So that's why I suggest staying as simple as possible with only one layer and as few tools as possible. :)
Hi Jeremy! I really like and enjoy your videos, out of curiosity, may I ask why did you chose to use orange/pinkish color for the light that hit the table? on the photo its more of a yellow color. Is it for the aesthetic or are there any other reasons? Thanks! Can't wait to see more videos :D
Hi Charlotte! I'm so glad you enjoyed my videos. Good question... yes, I often shift certain colors to give a warmer flavor to the whole thing. IN fact I want to make a video about why to make shifts in color as I've observed this in many artists. I'd talk about themes of appeal and when bending reality might make things make more sense rather than just sticking to reality. I guess I subconsciously did this here :)
Yes, I sometimes do a sketch layer with things that have more complicated shapes so I don't get lost later in the painting with odd proportions. I do it most often with portrait studies
So when I help people start painting I want to make sure the tools don't get in the way. It's just far too easy to get lost in the tools and for people to over-complicate things and forget about the main point... color. Also if you paint on only one layer then this process works in physical mediums too, like oils or acrylic. I have no issues with people using layers and all of the wonderful tools in digital, but too often people fall in love with the tool rather than the art itself. That's why I encourage a simple start
im sorry but all this did was make me feel worse. I feel like I did a terrible job. I didnt have you pen but I feel like that doesnt matter. it just looks like a mess edit: this has nothing to do with you, I think you're wonderful, I just feel like something isnt clicking with me

my terpentine brush is way too big when I have it all the way up in size like you, why is that? great video!!!!!!!

❤❤❤
If this wasn't just a color study and you wanted to get into the details of the photo, would you change your process at all?
You make it look simple! I am glad that I found your channel. May I ask why the one layer rule?
Thank you! So glad you found my channel too. I hope it's helpful. The reason I suggest starting color studies as only a single layer is to keep people from getting distracted by technology. what i pad did you use?
I have a really old one, 1st generation
Do you have any courses to learn in depth?
It's interesting that in the egg painting, you started with shapes and in this video you did a sketch first. Which method is best to use?
Yes, I sometimes do a sketch layer with things that have more complicated shapes so I don't get lost later in the painting with odd proportions. I do it most often with portrait studies
How do you know when colors are desaturated? This might sound stupid sorry
Why do you have a single layer rule?
So when I help people start painting I want to make sure the tools don't get in the way.
