This is the WORST Decision GM has Made In A LONG Time!

  • Last week, General Motors confirmed that it has plans to no-longer use Apple Car Play and Android Auto in its electric vehicles moving forward.
It's sparked a large backlash from both automotive journalists and EV fans, even though the largest electric automaker in the world (Tesla) has never offered Apple Car Play or Android Auto connectivity in its vehicles.
But while Tesla (as well as Rivian) require you to use their own implementation of in-car navigation and entertainment, we think GM's move is a bad one.
Here's why - as well as our (rather cynical) explanation of why we think it's happening.

I was actually looking forward to the Equinox EV until I heard that Carplay / Android auto are not included. It really feels like a subscription grab by GM. Here is the real rub. Most of these systems are built off of the 4G Cellular network (GM is switching to 5G in 2024). My last car (2014 Buick) was built off of the 2G network, which is no longer in use. I can't connect Buick to the internet (for OnStar, App functions, etc) at all because the towers no longer support 2G. In 6-8 years when 4G cellular goes away for whatever "G" is new. Those vehicles will lose all of their connection to updates. Without Carplay / Android Auto Navigation will become outdated, or may no longer work.
