How McLaren has beaten F1 2022's major car problem

  • Porpoising was the big talking point of the first pre-season Formula 1 test in Barcelona, with everyone afflicted by it to a greater or lesser extent. But the team that seemed least concerned about the situation was McLaren.
    Thanks to the sharp eye of our technical expert Gary Anderson, and the artificially-created wet running on the final day of the test, we can see at least some of the reason why McLaren was in such good shape compared to its rivals. And if we’ve noticed, you can guarantee that rival teams will have spotted exactly the same thing.
    So what did McLaren get so right, and what does it tell us about the development direction others will need to go in to solve their own porpoising problems?

    The Mclaren went out when it was really wet (full wet tyres), this is why the vortex is so visible. By the time Mercedes and Red bull went out it was a lot dryer (intermediate tyres), so the vortex would have been less visible.

    I hope for Mc Laren they got it right. But remember we likely haven’t seen the true potential of the 2022 cars. It could also be that they just have a floor that is generating less downforce than the other teams or a car that creates more drag than the opposition. In witch case they have a much bigger problem.

    • @luisax86

      Vortex = downforce.
      Stalled diffuser = no vortex = no downforce.

    • @MartijnBC
      @MartijnBC 2 года назад

      @@luisax86 no, that is much to simple. Vortex may help to create downforce, but it can also create drag resulting in a slower car. The bottoming out and stalling is the result of the generation of downforce. You can only reduce that effect with stiffer suspension, higher rideheight, sacrificing some downforce or a combination of the above. The teams are al searching for the best combination now. The likes of Mercedes and Mercedes will have found it come the last test day. I would really like it when Mc Laren will be on front next season, but in my eyes there is a risk that the Mc Laren turns out to have a floor that generates to little downforce when the cars are finally driven in full anger.

    • @PimpDaddyStyles
      @PimpDaddyStyles 2 года назад

      @@MartijnBC that vortex seals the floor better than having a lower ride height, generating the ground effect is very easy, so easy thats why it was banned originally because cars were going too fast at the time. none of the cars will have little downforce from ground effect. the issue is controlling it which mclaren clearly have.

      Yeah look at how bad cars with floor damage used to be and multiply that by 5 or so.

      It will be like loosing a wing... But I mean loosing the bargeboards on 2021 cars were terrible too

      Unless you ban all aero elements off the edges of the car, this is going to be inevitable.

      isn't that just the nature of single seaters? to be sensitive to damage therefor encouraging skillful racing?

    Really fascinating video. Will be very interested to see how all the teams develop their solutions to combat this problem, including how McLaren further develop this idea.

    Fascinating stuff. It’s a shame that F1 themselves don’t analyse the cars like this in their media packages. You guys are doing a top job! 🤙

      Don't look super far into it, other than Ferrari. McLaren and Ferrari were both on wets, meaning more water in the air and on the track. The comparison is relatively useless for the Redbull/Merc.

    The evolution of the high v low rake, high v low ride height, with high rake allowing for more air under the car hence working the diffuser more but creating more drag with the floor, with the venturi tunnels, high ride height does allow for more air but is create a larger gap between the floor and tarmac to be sealed, thus air skirts are essentials, with how well merc adapted to sealing the floor with air skirts last season, you'd think they'd have been on top of thus but this is just the pre pre season test so hopefully they already have something in the works for this, good job Mclaren, really have grown since the rude awaken with the switch to Renault pu

    GREAT big thanks....I was thinking the teams probably had some really hy tech floor designs probably just making things more frustrating if they don't get it sorta an working right....I can't believe the porpoise issue would have been well predicted an sorta long before cars hit the race tracks being its a tendency u said.....I was a fan back in 1980....85 to 90 yes...but not 80....thanks again

    Awesome job team, you guys rock!
    The first thing I thought of when I saw the Marc, RB and Ferrarri floor detailing at the back was, that they are hiding som tricks for Bahrain or maybe waiting for development…
    Very interesting video… now we beed to invent cameras that can see air as it is 😉
