- #ad The Dominator 1 is a legendary tornado interceptor that was featured on the series Storm Chasers on Discovery Channel during the 2009 and 2010 severe weather seasons. Multiple tornadoes were intercepted directly during those years, with peak wind gusts of 155.2 and 138.8 mph measured by the roof mounted anemometer. Over 10 years later, during the 2023 storm season, the team decided to fix up the Dominator 1 so that it can chase once again! Team Dominator turned to Flex Tape by @FlexSeal to patch the rubber flaps on the side of the Dominator 1 and to bridge the gap in the Lexan windshield, so that this incredible vehicle can intercept tornadoes once again. Awesome! Now to get Dominator 2 repaired and back in the field! Once TIV 1 has been fixed all intercept capable cars that were used during Discovery's Storm Chasers run will be operational once again!
Has there been any updates on tiv 1 or dom 2 at all?
TIV 1's last update from the owner was 10 months ago. The old spikes are in the process of being removed. The front spikes are completely gone already. Unfortunately, pretty much every part inside TIV 1 needs replacing, and they are all on backorder or unavailable. So TIV 1 likely won't be done until 2025 or later.
As far as Dominator 2 is concerned, I believe Reed's plan is to get Dom 2 fixed this offseason and to get Dom 1 and 2 back to 2010-2011 condition with a few upgrades and repainted to their original paint schemes. Next year all 3 Dominators should be back chasing in tornado ally where they belong!

@@nagol5954 Dominator 2 is just in a general state of disrepair. It hasn't been used since 2013 and has been left outside for multiple years. It also has more custom additions (anchoring spikes, more advanced airbag systems, advanced air cannons for probes, and hydraulic systems) that need advanced repairs, new custom parts fabricated, complete replacing, or removal.
I believe Reed's plan still is to get Dominator 2 functional this year, and during the offseason get both Dominator 1 and 2 completely restored to their original condition, ready to chase again!

It's really kind of surreal. I remember thinking it was so impressive, back in the late 2000s, that someone had developed a vehicle that could (reasonably reliably) go inside a tornado and come out the other side mostly unharmed. It felt like proof that we were living in the future.
And I guess it was, but "the future" is relative. It's weird seeing something so genuinely advanced being pulled out of storage covered in rust, but I'm glad that they opted to do it. The Dominator I may be old now, and not as sophisticated as the rest of their fleet, but with repairs it can still do its job just as well as it could in 2009 (better, with upgrades). The more suitable vehicles they have in the field, the more opportunities they have to capture data from inside a tornado.
Reed, if your engine needs work look up Richard Holdener on youtube. He specializes in dyno testing of GM V8 performance parts like cylinder heads and camshafts. You can easily and cheaply add 100+ horsepower to Dominator 1s engine to get you into position quicker or out of trouble quicker. Love the channel and never stop chasing!
Can't wait for the whole fleet to be in tip top shape with all the news tools and tech we have today.

I never missed one episode of Storm Chasers on Discovery. Was my number one favorite show. I am terrified of tornadoes but I was fascinated to watch. The red shoe it was called. LOL.. RIP to Joel, Tim, Paul and Carl. I great bunch of guys.

5:11 That air filter explains why it had a hard time starting in the first place, on top of the fuse issues. There may be a slight lack of maintenance going on there. For the weather they're driving in with the wind and dust, it should be more like 1 filter to a tornado season. Since they're purposely driving it into a tornado, it might be a good idea to keep the vehicle in top running condition.

I am not offended. I know I don’t look great especially over the last few years. I’ve lost touch with my grooming routine and rarely shower, shave or buy new clothes. I became burned out from chasing so hard and doing extreme cardio over the last ten years. Working hard to make some changes to self care routine. I am in good physical fitness shape though.
The OG dominator is back in action once again I remember seeing this on the discovery channel storm chaser show back in the late 2000s and early 2010s I’m glad it’s back in action in 2023

If Dominator 1 is overheating, it's something other than the air filter. It only affects the intake air for the performance of the engine, but will never make it overheat. I'd say it's time to check the radiator, and if applicable, the AC condenser. They are likely plugged full of dirt and bugs. Could also change the thermostat if it's still original or if you know it's been a long time. They like to get stuck shut more than open.

No way man I was literally just telling a buddy I work with about me wondering what ever happened to the dominateor cars lol turns out he is kinda a tornado nerd too and remembered watching them as a kid like I did and we was talking about what ever happened to the cars. We thought there was no way they was just sraped. I'm really glade to see them back out!

As discovered, Dom 1 needs upgrades and repairs made to make it optimal. Such noted were the launch cannons and the AC unit.

Reed. Do you need a big heavy vehicle as a Dominator or could you use a smaller one. The reason I ask is if you could use a 2 seater car with the custom work done it could save fuel, be faster and go places D1 2 and 3 can't go.
