CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chip Hazard (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes from his box and activates the rest of the Commando Elite.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joe Dante directed this satirical action-comedy about talking tech toys accidentally juiced-up with military microchips. After the defense industry firm Globotech takes over a small toy company, Heartland Play Systems' CEO Gil Mars (Denis Leary) gives the green light to develop a new line of action figures, requesting an upgrade to more realistic figures from Heartland toy designers Larry Benson (Jay Mohr) and fumbling Irwin Wayfair (David Cross). Mars wants toys that act like the ones in TV commercials. The results are fierce fighting figures, the Commando Elite, programmed to seek out and destroy the kindly alien-like Gorgonites. In an effort to make the toys as natural as possible, Benson inserts Globotech's most powerful military computer chips. Meanwhile, in quiet Winslow Corners, Ohio, toy-store owner Stuart Abernathy (Kevin Dunn) and his 15-year-old son Alan (Gregory Smith) are stuck in a failing business, so when Heartland truckdriver Joe (Dick Miller) stops by with the Commando and Gorgonite toys, Alan is convinced they will be hot sellers, commenting, "Maybe this store will finally make a little money." With blistering blows to their blister packs, the Commandos burst out, receive orders from their leader Chip Hazard (voice of Tommy Lee Jones) and ready for an all-out assault on the Gorgonites. When the Gorgonite leader Archer (voice of Frank Langella) begins communicating with Alan, it causes the Commandos to perceive humans as another enemy, simply by their association with the "Gorgonite scum," so an attack on the Abernathy house begins. Unfortunately, the Gorgonites can offer only limited assistance, since they have been programmed to lose. The film combines animatronics, puppetry, and computer animation. The Commando Elite voices include surviving actors from Robert Aldrich's The Dirty Dozen (1967), while the Gorgonite voices reunited several This Is Spinal Tap (1983) cast members. A dedication to Phil Hartman (the voice of Phil Fimple) after the closing credits features a brief Hartman outtake.

This movie practically made me a filmmaker when I was a kid. Love these small soldiers! every time when I was bored I would close my eyes and create a battlefield and different scenarios to put them in it! I just opened my video game creator studio and it's inspired me a lot for the game dev

0:07 the way the guitar wails and Chip Hazard punches through the plastic packaging is still a shining moment for me.

These are actually legit practical figures controlled by rods on set and enhanced with CGI.

They actually used a mixture of Animatronics and CGI. So the solders were actually puppets but CGI was added for facial expressions and certain movements
+FarryEntertainment Along with what ewaf88 said, given that they're toys, they didn't have to worry about programming difficult things like hair and cloth. Their plastic look helped make things easier.

It helped when you were trying to recreate something that was clearly not a fully articulate human but instead an animatronic action figure. Which is why nobody had any problem with the animation of the toys in Toy Story, but the few times we saw Andy and the other humans it was creepy as all get-out.

Something you might not have realized is that, the reason Chip says "standard issue in insufficient" is because he most likely tried to use his standard issue pistol to try to kill Archer while they were both in the back, but it didn't work because, you know, it's a toy. Hence why he was holding the pencil compass when they were found.

Fans should make a sequel comic to this movie. I can imagine it taking the Terminator 2 route in making the Commando Elite good and fighting in real wars like the CEO guy hints at. There is a webcomic of Super Mario Bros the Movie that fans made since a sequel of that movie was cancelled, so a fan comic for this movie doesn’t seem impossible.
I am very pleased to say I still have a Major Chip Hazard scale action figure. Real threaded uniform with a mesh undershirt and everything. So awesome.

After more than 20 years, I just realized that if there was (should have been) a deactivation code word programmed into these war toys, none of this would have happened, but more importantly, it would have made playing with them safe despite having munitions chips in them. With the activation code word being "Ten hut",, the deactivated version should be "Stand down". Unless there was no deactivation code word, then Alan and Joe didn't read everything on the box's back that would have prevented the events. It's just like Ralph said in the lab scene, "So if it's your problem, it's in your software."

I remember they pulled the Kip Killigan toy because of a school shooting incident involving a kid named "Kip Klingal" or something along those lines. Pissed me off, as I had every one of them except him! Grr.
Evidently, they did carry the toy at some places, but not everywhere. (They particularly didn't carry it in Oregon, where the shooting happened) The kid (Kip Kinkel) killed four people and injured a number of others.
I remember they pulled the Kip Killigan toy because of a school shooting incident involving a kid named "Kip Klingal" or something along those lines. Pissed me off, as l had every one of them except him! Grr.

I remember I had Chip Hazard, Archer, and Insaniac. As a matter of fact, I still have Insaniac but his head broke off. I'm not sure what happened to the other two. Man I wish I would've taken better care of those toys.

This movie was so amazing for its time. I remember paying to see this atleast 3 times and sneaking into the theaters a half dozen more times with my friends. This movie helped me get over the fear of watching Puppet Master lol

For 1998, the movie's effects have aged impressively well. I supposed it helps the CGI was mostly limited to characters we know are non-organic articulated action figures, so being plastic-looking with that sort of delayed-servo-motor kind of movement worked with the limitations of rendering tech at the time, and mixing in practical FX shots now and then as well further helped.
Chip breaking Kip's gun is always my favorite moment of this scene and when Chip yells at em calling them ladies XD haha

This was insane when I was a kid. So awesome. Bringing back some serious nostalgia
This movie came out when I was five years old and I watched it probably every day. Funny that critics at the time considered this too violent and scary for little kids. I loved Tommy Lee's voice as Chip Hazard and now I forever associate him with that role when I hear him. This was also the first time I ever saw Phil Hartman on screen, who I grew up to adore. Unfortunately it was his last movie as his wife killed him about two months before it came out.
