I always took it as a sentience thing. When they are made the chips give them sentience but when they die, thats it. One and done. They simply used Nitro's chip to give sentience to other toys.

Well, once after I saw this scene in Small Soldiers, during my break time in the playground at Gosberton House School, when I saw a Barbie doll in the toybox, I recreated that scene of the dolls attacking me with it and when I attacked it, I threw it into the box. I remember Luke Crowley seeing this and saying "ugggh Sam Bee is playing with the dolls!". lol😂
I know it's a comedy and a movie and all, and enjoyed this when I was a kid, but even back then I always wondered how the hell did those barbie dolls moved around without any servos or motors or power cells or wiring or had speakers to project voice - considering they were structurally not designed for any of those functions. The actual 'action soldiers' were believable since they were designed to do all of the above, but I have to say this scene kind of broke the movie for my young child mind :(
You can see motors and batteries on some of them in the later scenes, mainly the one with eyes for a head and the one on christy's shoulder when she's tied to a chair. One also had a holes for a speaker in their chest, but I only saw that one looking at the movie props, no idea how any of them can see though.

Imagine if at first they're all gung-ho, but they slowly begin to question everything Hazard orders them to do. They survive and join the Gorgonites as melted freaks, while Hazard forms his big army for the climax.

When I first saw it, I thought it was like a pencil pouch that some people keep in binders. It made sense to me seeing what appears to be a large metal hole for a three ring binder clip to go through on the far side of the bag and the zipper going down the middle.
Love how its so many references in the space of about 10 seconds. Barbie dolls, a plasma lamp, a fiber optic lamp, and LCD radio, a lava lamp, a star trek warp core, a blender, and electric whisk, salon hair driers, and Frankenstein.

Probably goes to explain why those dolls were particularly blood thirsty when the other soldiers actually follow the rules of War. Firing Warning shots, refusing to kill hostages, when using chemical warfare they makes sure it's not enough to kill, and they only get violent in retaliation to the people attacking them. They were programmed to perceive the aliens as their enemies and the Aliens do nothing to come to an understanding and when the leader tries to talk down the commander it's only after killing all his friends so he's probably not in the mood to consider a truce.
1) The dolls aren't permanently networked to the chip. 2) Even if they were, their joints aren't motorized, their eyes aren't cameras...etc. So they wouldn't be able to move or do anything anyway.
1) I always thought the thing they plugged the chip into powered them remotely, but I remember the book saying they all had lesser chips taken from appliances throughout the house (which we can at 1:15 ), so maybe nick's chip just powered the factory? 2) The stitches all over the the dolls imply motors have been inserted into them, but the non-CG dolls irl did move using different methods, most with wires poking out their lower backs (hidden at 1:36) while others like the ones at 1:47 have visible motors behind them moving them around Finally on 3) you got me, their eyes definitely weren't cameras, though I'd imagine one or two dolls could have been given nick's old eyes while the rest had sound and motion sensors you can find in things like hex bugs and wii remotes

It's crazy to think this was only 3 years after Toy Story, the CGI ain't half bad!
Looks great, but remember, not everything is CG, they used puppets a lot in this one (one third is puppetry), so it's a combination of both.

I saw this in the theater... Multiple parents were there with their young kids and had to get up and leave when the kids started crying.

The greatest crim is this cult classic not getting a sequel. The biggest mistake this movie did was released it months before the first Toy Story.
So fun fact there was a some what reboot about this but was cancel.
Toy Story actually came out in 1995. This came out in 1998.
1) The dolls aren't permanently networked to the chip.
2) Even if they were, their joints aren't motorized, their eyes aren't cameras...etc. So they wouldn't be able to move or do anything anyway.
1) I always thought the thing they plugged the chip into powered them remotely, but I remember the book saying they all had lesser chips taken from appliances throughout the house (which we can at 1:15 ), so maybe nick's chip just powered the factory?
2) The stitches all over the the dolls imply motors have been inserted into them, but the non-CG dolls irl did move using different methods, most with wires poking out their lower backs (hidden at 1:36) while others like the ones at 1:47 have visible motors behind them moving them around
Finally on 3) you got me, their eyes definitely weren't cameras, though I'd imagine one or two dolls could have been given nick's old eyes while the rest had sound and motion sensors you can find in things like hex bugs and wii remotes
