  • I finally got to put insulation in the shop. Standard 2x4 stud walls. There are some very basic techniques required to do the job so it works efficiently and I put this together to put those techniques in a place to share.

    Great video buddy. Another point, for the 2x4 wall the R-13 is the highest you should install. As an inspector I see individuals compressing a higher r value in that cavity. Insulation gets its r value from the little pockets of air between the fibers that hold their temps. Compression of the insulation squeezes out the pockets of air and diminishes the effectiveness.
    Just like you pointed out, a really effective way to insulate is by using foam and caulk to seal all possible points of air penetration.
    You did a great job on the install and gave great tips to make the job easier...I hate installing insulation!

      Thanks. I did not know that about R13 being the highest for walls like that. Interesting and excellent info. Thanks for sharing that.

    They're meant for SIXTEEN inch centers, not 15. They're 15" wide but not meant for 15" centers.
    Nice job though. I'm doing the same for my garage right now. One thing I saw on youtube a while back is the absolute BEST way to cut this stuff...an electric knife. The kind you use to cut the turkey at Thanskgiving. Super easy with the crispest lines you can imagine.

    • @DarinBeard
      @DarinBeard  2 года назад +1

      I just look at the square footage coverage of each "roll" (or whatever) and calculate what I would need, adding a little for waste. I know that one of these rolls covers four strips on the wall, so I go around the room counting out fours until I get a number of rolls. It actually worked really well and I ended up with the right number.

      The paper facing serves the same purpose as the plastic vapor barrier. If he had used unfaced insulation, then he would have needed a plastic vapor barrier.

    I was told by an insulation company doing an evaluation of my house that they would install fiberglass in the stud cavity, then place a foam insulation board in front of it and seal the whole stud cavity. Any thoughts on this? Thinking about doing it myself instead of paying what they quoted.

    • @DarinBeard

    I’m framing a small fish room in my shop. There’s about an inch gap between the exterior wall and the room that I’m building. Should I push my insulation in further or just let it sit evenly in the studs that I’m framing in? I don’t know if the empty 1 inch cavity will tank my efficiency?

    Hi, I'm going to be closing up a sunroom that has no insulation at all. I was planning on insulating the 3 walls with r13 but leaving the attic and floor uninsulated. Do you think this will work out ok? I'm going to be using a portable AC-Heater unit that vents to the outside.
