    Amazing video.
Another reason why gender is important:
Some words that are spelled and pronounced exactly the same may take different meanings for different genders. For instance "le livre" means the book, whereas "la livre" means Pound Sterling.

English is my second language. How simple English actually is! Learning French is like doing acrobatics in your head. Haha... French people see a gender in everything they see (my eyes are popping).

There are languages that have the neutral gender as well. It ads variety but yeah, it makes things convoluted.

I found a simple answer to this. I just stick to one and forget the rest. French may be staring at you funny but they'll get what you're trying to say. Fuk the french anyways. Merci á tous for coming to my Ted talk

Since then, I have been following you and other teachers on RUclips in search of that magic wand that will teach me french the fastest and the easiest. But, and I truly mean it, you are one of the best, if not the best, french teacher of all. Thank you very much and I will continue following you. Merci beaucoup!

I wish someone had said this sentence to me months ago. "EVERYTHING HERE IS EITHER HE OR SHE". I NEVER understood how Il est vert could mean IT is green when Il = he. It's because everything is a he or she. This over many other things just made it click in my head.
TY Alexa, you're making this so much easier for me. I only want to learn bc I love the language. I'll probably never have the money (and with 4 kids, I'll probably never have time) to travel to France, but I've loved this language my entire life, and I'm determined to learn to speak it, even if I never have a reason to use it. My husband is trying to learn with me simply bc he knows it makes me happy, so hopefully we'll both get there one day.

Yes, wenn it is neutral in english, it is generally "il" in french : it is cold outside = il fait froid dehors. :)

One thing I might add where you compare interrogative pronouns from french to english (11:55) .. when you go from singular to plural in english there is actually a change that is needed from "what" to "which" ... so it should be "What pen is on the table" and "which pens are on the table"

In my language, even animals have no gender, we call cat as "pusa" ( whether it's male or a female),
book as "aklat" ( no gender at all)
So is every thing, only person has a gender.
I think you're the best French teacher I know :)

It's 'you catch my drift" or "you get the gist of it". I've never heard "you get my grip" lol
it's super cute though! It's like how you say "you're going to tell me 'why is that?' " instead of saying "you're going to ASK me 'why is that' "
    It's cute ;-)

    Excellent lesson, Alexa! :)
Regarding the structure, I would rather call the "5 reasons" word groups, as they all refer to a comparable class of elements (possessive pronouns, subject pronouns, demonstrative pronouns...).
6:40 You use the word "agree" here, but a better translation would be "to conform, to match, to correspond". The number and gender of adjectives and possessive pronouns (...) match, correspond to, conform with the number and gender of the noun.

This summary lesson is very useful. It is heavy loaded with grammatical content, though. So one has to stop and go and repeat it again and again. It serves well for either repeating the principles, or finding out where your gaps are for working on them separately. Thank you so much, Alexa.

Wow! I love the way you explained, is so clear! My mother language is portuguese, so for us there is no "it" too, something is she or he, and the rules are the same, everything needs to agree with feminine or masculine, so is easier, but your explanation make it much easier...

Thanks. This is more an explanation of how to use gender rather than its importance. If you're only speaking the differences are quite small, and given the poor level of most French people's English, mistakes in gender are acceptable in reality. So many Francophones I meet have absolutely no language skill in any other language so my rubbish French is welcomed. Passing school exams is a different matter.
