The Counter Offensive Was A Scam With An Evil Purpose | Dr. Philip Cunliffe

  • Dr. Philip Cunliffe explains why we were bombarded with images of heroic Ukrainian fighters during the "big super duper counter offensive" (to quote the always brilliant Alex Christoforou), engaged in an assault that no Western military would have been willing to fight-against all odds and without any kind of air superiority. Why was the meat grinder such a huge thing while achieving only casualties on the side of the "offensive" force? Well. The answer is sad. It was a spectacle and always meant to be one. Listen to Dr. Cunliffe explain why and how this is and how the philosophy of Jean Baudrillard can help us make sense of the nonsense.
    Dr. Cunliffe's short essay: www.newstatesman.com/comment/...
Philip Cunliffe is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the Institute of Risk and Disaster Reduction at the University College London. He is the author of various books, his newest one being “Taking Control: Sovereignty and Democracy After Brexit”.

What I find strange is that in every analysis I've heard no one considers that the Russians may actually be concerned by what was happening to the people in the Donbass, that the ethnic cleansing that took over twelve thousand lives was horrifying to them. But what if they were in fact concerned?
Turn back to 2004 and the USA had parachuted Mikheil Saakashvili into the presidency of Georgia using all the techniques we would see in the 'colour revolutions'. By 2008 Saakashvili had used clashes, in some places engineered by those who would become The Georgian Legion - a far right militia of whom members of which admitted to being the snipers in 2014 Ukrainian Maidan coup, with ethnic Abkhazians and South Ossetians to mount an incursion into those enclaves even though Russia had massed troops on the border and warned them to cease. At the same time NATO promised Georgia membership.
    Sound familiar?
It should. It's *exactly* what happened prior to the Russian incursion into the Donbas.
A US puppet had started to ethnically cleanse Russian minorities, was offered NATO membership, threatened the Russian borders, mounted a rapid incursion into the territories of the minorities and started ethnically cleansing said minorities. All that remained to see was what the Russians would do.
The Russians went over the border and drove to the capital with comparatively small, fast force. They toppled the president and forced new elections. The Georgians, sick of Saakashvili's antics, kicked him out.
Notably Saakashvili went on to be the governor of Odessa, a critical city in Ukraine's southern 'Russian belt' where Russian is primarily spoken, in time for the Maidan coup and where over a hundred anti-Maidan protesters were shot or burned to death.
It is my thesis is that US planning for Ukraine started far earlier than most surmise, that the Russo-Georgian War was a dry run to study Russian strategy and tactics and develop counters, counters like packing the attack routes to Kyiv with javelin-armed troops to stall the Russian attack and let the sanctions crush the economy just as the 'shock therapy' of Boris Yeltsin had crushed the Russian economy in the late 1990s. This thesis accounts of the fact that the Russians' attack force of was woefully small for an invasion at 190,000 troops but about right to quickly drive the capital and decide the issue. To actually invade Ukraine with a total territorial seizure planned the Russians should have by their own doctrine used 2,500,000 troops and half again as many reserves, a number derived from their bitter experiences in Chechnya.
The USA and NATO started this war in the early 2000s, probably after Yeltsin was removed. The probable war aim was to fragment Russia into smaller, easily-dominated republics that could not combine against NATO or the USA and could be controlled by loans from the WHO and the IMF. This was occurring when Chechnya bloodily tried to leave the federation but the use of Chechen terror attacks hardened Russian resolve.
In closing, I find it totally credible that the Russian Duma wanted to try a 'Georgian Strike' on the US-controlled Ukrainian far-right proxy slaughtering Russians right on their border, sending refugees fleeing into their country and the death and destruction on domestic nightly news. And I think they fell into a well-laid trap that almost worked.

I agree. Politics is about how to run a human society. We humans need pride, joy and faith/hope just as much as we need food and shelter. Life expectency in a population without pride and hope is very low. What hope does the population in Gaza have, but the hope that Hamas or pressure from UN/the world one day will make Israeli politicians change their minds.

I remember in the 80s, Britain seemed to "get bored" with the troubles of Northern Ireland, the news reports of sectarian killings, or violence involving the armed forces or the RUC began to be framed more like "foreign news", distant, irrelevant, intractable, tiresome. The IRA clearly noticed this, and began a bombing campaign in the financial district in the City of London (usually picking Sundays, where the place is almost deserted). London's financial industry found itself a target, and no doubt applied political pressure for a solution. Westminster was coerced to act, leading ultimately to the peace talks, the Good Friday Agreement and a lasting (if fragile) peace. I think Hamas have made similar calculations here. I am not defending any violence against civilians, or civilian infrastructure but the fact is, we have never seen such global consensus for a peaceful solution in Israel/Palestine than that which has emerged since October 7th 2023.

A very illuminating talk. I have thought throughout that the unrelenting propaganda coming from Western politicians and media had a kind of comic book quality to it in its dumbing down: good vs evil, democracy vs. autocracy, "Russia wants to invade Poland and recreate the Russian Empire" etc. Yet it seems stupid as Pascal says that despite the massive amount of information tens of millions of us have contradicting that narrative, they still continue with it 20 months after the war started.

    • @RyanM-ts7pw
      @RyanM-ts7pw 9 месяцев назад +3

The persistence of those false narratives has also surprised me to a slight extent. Given that both the historical facts and the ongoing realities counter the officially-sanctioned narratives, and given that the various NATO state governments have lost credibility in a number of other ways, and lastly given the obvious failures and weakening of Ukraine's position in this conflict, I suppose I expected that eventually those at the helm (e.g. the U.S. Administration, NATO, etc.) might begin to evince a bit more realism. Instead, the Blinken/Biden crew and their sycophants in the EU have seemingly doubled down on their positions.

To ensure the superiority of the British Empire, Halford Mackinder summarised his theory on geopolitics as follows: "Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland (edit: roughly the area of Western Russia and Eastern Europe); who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island; who rules the World-Island commands the world."
Note here that Royal Navy battleships could not reach this "heartland" for direct rule, the own population figures were to low for overpowering or invading this region, and the local continental European political/economic powers here were too strong for an outside power to implement indirect rule (per proxy).
A hundred years later, the new "rulers of the world" in Washington DC, still eager to assert their own "full spectrum domination" (yes, that is a real term used in other strategy papers):
"... how America *manages* Eurasia is critical. Eurasia is the globe's largest continent ... About 75 percent of the world's people live in Eurasia, and most of the world's physical wealth is there as well, both in its enterprises and underneath its soil. Eurasia accounts for about 60 percent of the world's GNP and about threefourths of the world's known energy resources. Eurasia is also the location of most of the world's politically assertive and dynamic states... The world's two most populous aspirants to regional hegemony and global influence are Eurasian. All of the potential political and/or economic challengers to American primacy are Eurasian." Excerpt from "THE GRAND CHESSBOARD American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives" by Zbigniew Brzezinski
    Notice the word: "manages".
*Strategies like "managing", "moderating", or the similar concept of "steering", all taking place in a comprehensive strategy aka "divide and rule".* A strategy so simple most people will kick themselves when they find out how it works: Once one has attained a position of superior power, pick a favorate (favoratism), or two, or three, and start "managing/directing" like the boss of a company delegating tasks...
The only difference between the two powers, one gaining and the other waning, was that after WW2 the USA took over this very same strategy from London. More and more analysts are discovering (archival evidence) that this overpowering of the British Empire, which was implemented in stages by her own "special relationship"-best friend the USA after WW2, was not simply a matter of luck, or a matter of "global hegemony falling into the lap of the USA" or the "good guys winning", as popularly believed, but rather a long-term premeditated strategy.
    Search for "Ho--w Amer..ica bro-ke the Br.tish Empire / the other Graet Gam..e 1941-1947" here on RUclips...
Washington DC overpowered their own "best fwiends" using the very same "divide and rule"-technique London had previously implemented ON THE CONTINENT.
    Critical question.
If it is the historical realisation ever since before Mackinder (Geographical Pivot of History/1904) that a united Eurasia in some or other form, at the "core" of the planet is the danger to the periphery, then what is the strategy to avoid that? This simply begs the further question: What strategies were the periphery (UK, USA) going to employ to avoid/prevent these regions from uniting into mutually beneficial cooperation, or formating as single powers (by military force or close alliances)?
    Answers:
The Treaty of Versailles, was "divide and rule": Europeans were *divided,* with a *ruling...*
The Truman Doctrine was "divide and rule": Europeans, were yet again, *divided* with a *"ruling".*
*Even today, Europeans are being "managed" in ways they simply cannot imagine for themselves (individual level).*
Creeping up on Russia post-1990s, using "proxies/tools" (Eastern Europeans ex-WP states), is the exact same technique. The desired endsieg is to get others into the state of "extending" the rival to such a point, doing the "heavy lifting", so that the "dividers" can move in and "divide" Russian citizens (of course, these are multi-lingual and multi-ethnic) with "rulings" to surround China...
*Whatever the outcome in the Ukraine or Israel/Gaza, the dividers in Washington DC have already achieved their aim. Eurasia is "divided" into multiple "teams", all arguing with each other and pointing fingers, playing the blame game, unable to unite into greater powers...*

SAVVAK was the secret police loyal to Royal Dutch Shell, Iran broke free in 1979, Hugo helped Venezuela break the same ownership by 1995. Both countries are labelled as terrorist states, yet the Arab Spring nations have willingly allowed Secret Police that are loyal only to Brussels.

The performative nature of these wars certainly makes one think of the performative nature of events of the Roman Coliseum and the Byzantine Hippodrome at a larger scale. Some of the plebs get to be entertained, some get to go to Pain City. Those who are entertained get to choose a team. Some teams will always win, some lose, but they must always entertain. Many permutations, but always violent, but without rational purpose, unless one considers the perverse entertainment value. Wow, decadent and particularly evil at the same time.
Sad thanks for this discussion. Lacrimae rerum.

Did you catch Terry Jones' take on that? (3 part TV doc series, "Barbarians") He said that the gladiatorial shows were a way to "import" the routine violence at the fringes of the Roman Empire into the very centre of Roman society - as a safe, but thrilling spectacle, for the "civilised" Roman audience. And of course, the deaths and maiming in the amphitheatre were both hyper-real (gladiator "classes", with their special uniforms and weapons that never appear on the battlefield) and absolutely deadly for most participants.

Position of the majority of Russians both living in Russia and Ukraine, is that Smallrussia and Crimea became part of Ukrainian Soviet Republic as a result of Communist Party political games. Nobody asked local, predominately Russian population if they want to be a part of something they never were. It didn't mutter so much when it was still a part of the same country, but when Russia and Ukraine became independent, many Russian people in both countries felt that they've been cheated and a hostile to Russia nation gets to keep territories that it doesn't has a legitimate claim to.

I have paid some thought to Baudrillard's angle in this war. It really seems like the western political classes are living in a mirror house made of war propaganda (made by their own institutions), conformity and group think and pure political and intellectual incompetence (inability to realistic analysis). Thus, there are now so many surprises. Russia and Putin didn't fall due to sanctions or all the moral huffin' and puffin'. Wonder weapons are burning or going ineffective. Europe's economy is going to the drain while the global economic system is reorganizing in unexpected ways. The supposed "green salvation" has been thrown into a backseat indefinitely until power hierarchy is restored and "dangerous" international depencies are broken. Institutions which were built in trust to provide true information for rational politics (peace & prosperity) seem to work in on the opposite way.
Partly, all this dysfunction and nightmares of Habermas may be old-fashioned war psychosis, but I would too prefer to continue analysis to direction how neoliberalism and it's current informational stage has accelereted changes to mental constitution of western populations. And clusterfuck we've arrived ecologically too. It's kind of a frightening combination that's in our hands. BTW thanks for great discussions, Pascal!

    Correction:
Annexation, in international law, is the forcible acquisition and assertion of legal title over one state's territory by another state, usually following military occupation of the territory. A state consists of its people and is defined by the (democratic) will of its people, and the people in Crimea voted to rejoin Russia (as they had done before, also) in 2014 - they rejected the West's illegally installed putsch regime (a color revolution), an act by the West that along with violating human rights also violated the basis of international law (the principle of national sovereignty), a gross interference in Ukraine's internal affairs. Russia's Black Sea Fleet is situated in Crimea (since 1783).
The choice of the people in Crimea, as documented by the referendum, is to be respected as a democratic decision by the people of Crimea, and as such has nothing to do with annexation (as defined by law).

The feminist class has worked overtime to get rid of the patriarchy, but the patriarchy was a balanced system. Now we live in a state of gynocentrism, everything is geared to benefit women. From a bird perspective you can see it. We have gender studies and wokeness in the west, engineers and entrepreneurs in the east. Propaganda and empty words in the west, brutal force in the east.

The importance, at least, is that there isn't an equilibrium, and that perhaps in an imbalanced sort of way, Russians are dealing with more reality than are western populations. Russia is on the receiving end of a western coalition proxy war. That's not something in dispute. As such, Russia is clearly on the defensive, and not losing. What kind of propaganda is going to serve the Russian government's communication with its own population than the truth, itself? Russia isn't motivated by the effect of propaganda, so to even suggest that there is propaganda in Russia, you first must explain why there would be such a market for it.

It wasn't theatre, it was a juggernaut set in motion decades earlier that was pushed on with everybody on top dancing whilst it gained momentum. There was no stopping it without collapsing Ukraine and NATO. I'm sure even the Ukrainian and NATO military were shocked and surprised by the level of failure of the whole operation. They thought they could focus on a small victory and spin it out of proportion. They didn't even get that.

Most of the front still has not reached or passed Russia's first line of defense, yet you can still read "leaders" in Ukraine claiming they will "liberate Crimea". Pure theater which only feels real to people because the media and some governments are saying it, but this counteroffensive was stillborn and the people who claim that it has a chance of success are in on the scheme or listen only to those that are in on the scheme.

The prime audience is of the peoples of the Western nations who are being kept focused in the direction away from what is happening in their own legislative bodies. Laws are being pushed through in parliaments and in supra-national organisations, that will be applied in full to give all wealth to the central banks (ultimately the Bank for International Settlements) and all health sovereignty to the WHO.
Cash will be taken away and if you don't take the jab, then it's no food for you.

I think this kind of analysis overcomplicates things. There are material interests, and the interests of individuals don’t always coincide with those of the collective they belong (at least nominally to). So yes, oligarchs in Ukraine may certainly have considered in their interests to do what their western backers required of them. But to claim they knew they had no chances of retaking the territory they had lost and they were willing to suffer catastrophic losses in the process, ultimately threatening their own security, that is to much of a stretch. It’s more likely they believed some intermediate objective could be accomplished and that would have kept them fed by maintaining western support. In this they miscalculated, but not because they knew their actions would lead to total failure and they consciously decided to undertake them anyway.

The word "Ukraine" translates to sort of "Borderland" although they have
a discrete language which started splitting from Russian when England was fighting the wars of the Roses, searching for the holy grail in the latter 1400s. 500 years is a fair amount of time in language terms

So what? According to the Pentagon, there were 110,000 Iraqis killed during the war. That number comes the AP. The UN claimed 255,000 in early 2006. The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health came up with a number of 300,000 to 600,000. Like the Pentagon doesn't know.

Pretty obvious to anyone who’s been paying attention, but might be new insights for a lot of people. I would add that this isn’t an “It’s not this, it’s that,” argument, but more of a, “It’s both this and that.” That is, sure it’s all a show, but there is infinite capacity for hope and self delusion in the human heart (even for political leaders) and one assumes that some of them actually believe the idealistic blather used to sell the conflict, or at least have hope that it will achieve some good (as they define it.)
One thing that does surprise me, though, is that people like Dr Cunliffe exist and are allowed to speak in London. I thought they had laws against that sort of thing.

You have to permit the free flow of ideas, we're experiencing an narration blackout and force fed whatever comes from the Ukrainian Intelligence services, taken completely as read with no critical analysis, not even basic smell test, we're asked to buy the myth of Ukraine's resistance to tyranny, when all along it simply took another crisis, one involving Joe Biden's re-election fund, I mean Israel, to divert Washington's gaze, like a kid with ADHD after a movie theatre size bag of M&Ms. Bad, very bad

How do you mean? There was a lot of talk about co.bined arms, except you NEED total air supremacy as step 1... step zero even, it HAS to be there, without it, those tanks are just steel coffins... the West eggs Ukeaine into this big-arrow offensive with the same implied contemporary that Hitler showed last century "we have only to k7ck the door in and the whole rotten edifice will come crashing down." Sounds great, it's a fantastic soundbite, but oh wow, what a miscalculation, and you can show me videos of tanks being clapped but there's only one side which has the ability to create new machines from scratch all the way West, to the Urals, so naughty Western planes can't start messing with them...and every T64 that gets spanked, there's no more, all gone, the factory is half rubble. Goddamn it.
Zoglenskiy: PREPARE FOR NEXT YEARS OFFENSIVE, ALL MALES AFED 4 TO 84 TO REPORY TO MILITARY RIGHT AWAY.. NOT PASS GO, NOT LEAVE country all men and women ages 18 to 50 report for military training and compulsory humiliating hazing rituals...

That the Ukrainian state and elites are focused on - and at least to an extent controlled by - foreign interests is an excellent insight. It's remarkable how many top Ukrainian politicians and wealthiest oligarchs are of Jewish or other non-Ukrainian ethnic backgrounds. Are these groups also as overrepresented among the troops fighting, being maimed, and dying at the front? And are the military and diplomatic objectives pursued by the Zelensky government in the best interests of the people who are making the biggest sacrifices?

It's not difficult to obtain the information here in Russia. The current Ukraine/NATO vs Russia War casualty list is approximately 740,000 Ukrainian military personnel dead, 227,000 Russian military personnel dead, and approximately 3,800 NATO contractors dead.

    Ceci, n'est pas une guerre..
Interesting topic, I see it as even more applicable to the situation in Israel than Ukraine.
I haven't followed events in Gaza closely, but Hamas seemed to be seeking attention after years of Corona and Ukraine took the spotlight away. Israel seems unwilling or unable to mobilise for a serious invasion and imho is just talking big and flexing its muscles. I think they will use this time of international indecision to simply create an 'acceptable' 10:1 or 20:1 kill ratio for the whole episode and then back out. No Northern Hezbollah front either.

Ukraine were not prepared to go "all in" without air support after they first encountered the minefields. Russian have 600km of front line to defends with major losses of soldiers and arms. Ukraine have made small gains on the way to Tokmak which is only 15 kim south and is very strategic. There is a new front forming in Kherson which is another huge problem for Russia.

    • @jamesgornall5731
      @jamesgornall5731 8 месяцев назад

There's no front, just feint, there's no strategy it's just...soundbite warfare...oh, a tank blowed up, as drone hit an IFV, have we won yet?
There's no balance,Ukraine's air defence has fallen apart, allowing Russian aviation to operate closer to Ukraine including the eye in the sky AWACS planes. Ukraine lost 10-12 aircraft shot down ambushed by S400 which talk to the AWACS birds which guide the missiles until their active radar locks on... a capability that couldn't be exercised when the S300 network still had missiles

Strained interpretation of Ukrainian offensive. It was simply playing the odds. We wager these resources and it'll pay off if the Russians are weaker tgan they seem. The oldest strategic miscalculation in the world. Underestimating the enemy

  • @ChristianMiersch

42:00 This guy has no clue. Of course the violence has a purpose. The whole aim of instilling war is to provoke your enemy into extreme, into unwarranted violence, which retroactively provides the proof that you where right after all (with your provocations). All that matters is the perception you create in your hemisphere, the rest is a long game over 20 or mabe 200 years. Dont underestimate the destructiveness of certain people. The sheer fact that there are people outside of your influence which are living under different rules, living not under your power, which are demonstrating by their actions that you are wrong - this extremely upsetting and such people devote their entire lifes to gain that total power over everybody.

  • @1being
    @1being 28 дней назад

The problem with considering hyperreality to be a motivation for Oct 7 with violence for no political end is that the political end was an exchange of prisoners of war for 3000 Palestinians in the Zionist Colony's military prisons and maybe absolute desperation due to Israel's serial aerial assaults the next of which was coming with or without Oct 7. There was a pragmatic objective. Few, and that likely included Hamas, anticipated Israel's own hyperreality / psychotic genocidal reaction to Oct 7. Also to correct the record, the mutilations claimed by Israel have been demonstrated to be atrocity propaganda for inciting a genocide.
Otherwise i do think this hyper reality / political performance construct is useful. The political objectives are there. They are just more amorphous and less concrete.

    Thanks Pascal....
For inviting Dr Cunliffe to shed light on the performative aspect of the spectacular drama entitled "A Super Duper Counter Offensive"
The value I took away from this conversation is how seeming opposites of two aspects of let's say Yin / yang or covert / overt or real / fake or performance / substance....
Aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. To add to your discussion I was thinking how the half-truth filled virtual-reality of the Western ruling Elites virtue - posturing served their purpose of not only to add "value" to their performance on traditional news media as well as social-media...
But key is to concretely add value precisely to its Military-industrial Complex, by which I mean...
    How concretely this bipartisan stopgap funding scheme has turned out practically to be a money laundering venture ( if we look at how all the carefully timed in slow incremental measured verbalization in all the speechifying of Biden and his defense secretary towards gradual arms transfer in a Drip by drip escalation for as Biden put it "as long as it takes";
not for Ukraine to win back territory mind you but to give themselves ( the Congressional- military- industrial Nexus) more time as I see it to space out this graduated funding only on paper to Ukraine; funding that's actually fiscally "laundered" to benefit pentagon's REAL actual budget in order to stockpile its weapons Depot with the latest and greatest Cutting Edge Super Sonic weaponry.
If you'll allow me this pun to counter Russell Brand's pun:
This "performance" of theirs is not just about the "fleas in a dog's fur".
Given the wanton Slaughter on two fronts of hot proxy Wars Biden just delivered his thoroughly virtuous posturing speech on this week's news....
the key substance I honed in on is...
The virtuous crumbs the president offered in Aid to Gaza in the Millions versus The 100 new BILLIONS to add to hundreds in BILLIONS already spent thus far...
Adding this new luxurious stop Gap fiscal lavishness in order to open up a new front with another proxy this time from Tel Aviv ( in a unexpected case of our own tail wagging the Top Dog-of-War that's the US)...
Or as General Alexander Haig once put bluntly "our Unsinkable aircraft carrier in the Middle East".
( In response to doctor Cunliff's Discussion of Baudrillard's Study of 'performative' aspect of 'Narratives', like Pentagon propaganda for example, . . .
This performace "Froth" Pitched by secretary Austin of Raytheon Is precisely what makes this trillion dollar Latte' so attractive; That a bipartisan congress keeps coming back to not Starbucks for more treats, kickbacks and other rewards , but to. . .
Daddy-Warbucks, like loyal consumers addicted to a HYPEr-Marketed product.
