What I find strange is that in every analysis I've heard no one considers that the Russians may actually be concerned by what was happening to the people in the Donbass, that the ethnic cleansing that took over twelve thousand lives was horrifying to them. But what if they were in fact concerned?
Turn back to 2004 and the USA had parachuted Mikheil Saakashvili into the presidency of Georgia using all the techniques we would see in the 'colour revolutions'. By 2008 Saakashvili had used clashes, in some places engineered by those who would become The Georgian Legion - a far right militia of whom members of which admitted to being the snipers in 2014 Ukrainian Maidan coup, with ethnic Abkhazians and South Ossetians to mount an incursion into those enclaves even though Russia had massed troops on the border and warned them to cease. At the same time NATO promised Georgia membership.
Sound familiar?
It should. It's *exactly* what happened prior to the Russian incursion into the Donbas.
A US puppet had started to ethnically cleanse Russian minorities, was offered NATO membership, threatened the Russian borders, mounted a rapid incursion into the territories of the minorities and started ethnically cleansing said minorities. All that remained to see was what the Russians would do.
The Russians went over the border and drove to the capital with comparatively small, fast force. They toppled the president and forced new elections. The Georgians, sick of Saakashvili's antics, kicked him out.
Notably Saakashvili went on to be the governor of Odessa, a critical city in Ukraine's southern 'Russian belt' where Russian is primarily spoken, in time for the Maidan coup and where over a hundred anti-Maidan protesters were shot or burned to death.
It is my thesis is that US planning for Ukraine started far earlier than most surmise, that the Russo-Georgian War was a dry run to study Russian strategy and tactics and develop counters, counters like packing the attack routes to Kyiv with javelin-armed troops to stall the Russian attack and let the sanctions crush the economy just as the 'shock therapy' of Boris Yeltsin had crushed the Russian economy in the late 1990s. This thesis accounts of the fact that the Russians' attack force of was woefully small for an invasion at 190,000 troops but about right to quickly drive the capital and decide the issue. To actually invade Ukraine with a total territorial seizure planned the Russians should have by their own doctrine used 2,500,000 troops and half again as many reserves, a number derived from their bitter experiences in Chechnya.
The USA and NATO started this war in the early 2000s, probably after Yeltsin was removed. The probable war aim was to fragment Russia into smaller, easily-dominated republics that could not combine against NATO or the USA and could be controlled by loans from the WHO and the IMF. This was occurring when Chechnya bloodily tried to leave the federation but the use of Chechen terror attacks hardened Russian resolve.
In closing, I find it totally credible that the Russian Duma wanted to try a 'Georgian Strike' on the US-controlled Ukrainian far-right proxy slaughtering Russians right on their border, sending refugees fleeing into their country and the death and destruction on domestic nightly news. And I think they fell into a well-laid trap that almost worked.

Sorry, only read the first part. It may be that the Kremlin was concerned about the ethnic Russians in Ukraine. But not enough to go to war. For a state like Russia to risk all that it's risking, it takes something truly big, like a serious threat to national security.
In this conflict everyone miscalculated and made few very strategic mistakes … US/West, Ukraine and Russia
And when I tell people that Yugoslavia fell apart because USA wanted so, I get labeled as crazy conspiracy theorist. Tensions were already there, but there is always USA behind the curtains financing and arming. Same in Kosovo few years later. KLA was listed on CIA's list of terrorist organizations up until 1998. The same group had ties with the Taliban. It's just sickening how much pain and suffering USA has been doing to the world after ww2.

I disagree that Hamas violence has no political value. I think their goal was to bring the Palestine issue to the forefront as the people of Gaza have been forgotten completely and oushed aside

I agree. Politics is about how to run a human society. We humans need pride, joy and faith/hope just as much as we need food and shelter. Life expectency in a population without pride and hope is very low. What hope does the population in Gaza have, but the hope that Hamas or pressure from UN/the world one day will make Israeli politicians change their minds.
Social Justice, it's philosophy has been around for awhile, Plato, etc. The current social justice atmosphere that we are currently living through, was, ironically, brought to us by Jews, the divide and conquer strategy. It's blowing back in their face now, unless of course, they manage to convince the rest of world that they are exempt from justice, because they are socially superior.
And I think the 1500 Hamas warriors that invaded Israel did so as a suicidal act to project the Palestinian cause to the world's attention.

I remember in the 80s, Britain seemed to "get bored" with the troubles of Northern Ireland, the news reports of sectarian killings, or violence involving the armed forces or the RUC began to be framed more like "foreign news", distant, irrelevant, intractable, tiresome. The IRA clearly noticed this, and began a bombing campaign in the financial district in the City of London (usually picking Sundays, where the place is almost deserted). London's financial industry found itself a target, and no doubt applied political pressure for a solution. Westminster was coerced to act, leading ultimately to the peace talks, the Good Friday Agreement and a lasting (if fragile) peace. I think Hamas have made similar calculations here. I am not defending any violence against civilians, or civilian infrastructure but the fact is, we have never seen such global consensus for a peaceful solution in Israel/Palestine than that which has emerged since October 7th 2023.
A very illuminating talk. I have thought throughout that the unrelenting propaganda coming from Western politicians and media had a kind of comic book quality to it in its dumbing down: good vs evil, democracy vs. autocracy, "Russia wants to invade Poland and recreate the Russian Empire" etc. Yet it seems stupid as Pascal says that despite the massive amount of information tens of millions of us have contradicting that narrative, they still continue with it 20 months after the war started.
The persistence of those false narratives has also surprised me to a slight extent. Given that both the historical facts and the ongoing realities counter the officially-sanctioned narratives, and given that the various NATO state governments have lost credibility in a number of other ways, and lastly given the obvious failures and weakening of Ukraine's position in this conflict, I suppose I expected that eventually those at the helm (e.g. the U.S. Administration, NATO, etc.) might begin to evince a bit more realism. Instead, the Blinken/Biden crew and their sycophants in the EU have seemingly doubled down on their positions.

I would not subscribe to the assumption about unification of the Arab world, there are no facts supporting it in real actions, declarations are not considered.
To ensure the superiority of the British Empire, Halford Mackinder summarised his theory on geopolitics as follows: "Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland (edit: roughly the area of Western Russia and Eastern Europe); who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island; who rules the World-Island commands the world."
Note here that Royal Navy battleships could not reach this "heartland" for direct rule, the own population figures were to low for overpowering or invading this region, and the local continental European political/economic powers here were too strong for an outside power to implement indirect rule (per proxy).
A hundred years later, the new "rulers of the world" in Washington DC, still eager to assert their own "full spectrum domination" (yes, that is a real term used in other strategy papers):
"... how America *manages* Eurasia is critical. Eurasia is the globe's largest continent ... Notice the word: "manages".
*Strategies like "managing", "moderating", or the similar concept of "steering", all taking place in a comprehensive strategy aka "divide and rule".* A strategy so simple most people will kick themselves when they find out how it works: Once one has attained a position of superior power, pick a favorate (favoratism), or two, or three, and start "managing/directing" like the boss of a company delegating tasks...
The only difference between the two powers, one gaining and the other waning, was that after WW2 the USA took over this very same strategy from London. More and more analysts are discovering (archival evidence) that this overpowering of the British Empire, which was implemented in stages by her own "special relationship"-best friend the USA after WW2, was not simply a matter of luck, or a matter of "global hegemony falling into the lap of the USA" or the "good guys winning", as popularly believed, but rather a long-term premeditated strategy.

If it is the historical realisation ever since before Mackinder (Geographical Pivot of History/1904) that a united Eurasia in some or other form, at the "core" of the planet is the danger to the periphery, then what is the strategy to avoid that? This simply begs the further question: What strategies were the periphery (UK, USA) going to employ to avoid/prevent these regions from uniting into mutually beneficial cooperation, or formating as single powers (by military force or close alliances)?
Answers:
The Treaty of Versailles, was "divide and rule": Europeans were *divided,* with a *ruling...*
The Truman Doctrine was "divide and rule": Europeans, were yet again, *divided* with a *"ruling".*
*Even today, Europeans are being "managed" in ways they simply cannot imagine for themselves (individual level).*
Creeping up on Russia post-1990s, using "proxies/tools" (Eastern Europeans ex-WP states), is the exact same technique. The desired endsieg is to get others into the state of "extending" the rival to such a point, doing the "heavy lifting", so that the "dividers" can move in and "divide" Russian citizens (of course, these are multi-lingual and multi-ethnic) with "rulings" to surround China...
*Whatever the outcome in the Ukraine or Israel/Gaza, the dividers in Washington DC have already achieved their aim. Eurasia is "divided" into multiple "teams", all arguing with each other and pointing fingers, playing the blame game, unable to unite into greater powers...*

In a nutshell, to keep Central European "brains" (technology, innovation), and Eastern European "muscle" (raw materials, manpower) *divided* with *rulings* has been the key objective for the outsiders, for more that 200 years.
Same can be said about most wars. The guest is not directly involved, he can speculate as much as he likes.

The close relationship between the KSA and France is why Lebanon can be bombed by Israel for weeks on end, and the UN is actually helping that happen. That is why nobody will come to their aid. The term used is 'in their pocket' where crimes against their own citizens will never result in criminal charges at the ICC.

You give too much credit to our leaders and are very theoretical. About Ukraine I think the situation is simple. A deal was indeed going to be struck in March and Russia started pulling back. Then Zelensky and co, due to inexperience, threats and convincing weapon speeches, fell into the Bojo/US trap. And from there on Zy is biting his nails as US spoon feeds him to ensure a long lasting war. US could not miss this unique opportunity.

I had never heard of Dr Philip Cunliffe before I watched this conversation but I am extremely impressed by his wisdom. He is a truly brilliant analyst.
It shows clearly that there are brilliant analysts in every country but the actual governments just flatly ignored them and carried on with the plans of their handlers.
NATO wasn’t prepared for war? Obviously. Mainly because NATO didn’t expect the prolonged war. NATO (USA) expected that the sanctions would cripple Russian economy which would collapse under the economic 😮pressure. It is the Russian economic and military resilience that shocked NATO.

The performative nature of these wars certainly makes one think of the performative nature of events of the Roman Coliseum and the Byzantine Hippodrome at a larger scale. Some of the plebs get to be entertained, some get to go to Pain City. Those who are entertained get to choose a team. Some teams will always win, some lose, but they must always entertain. Many permutations, but always violent, but without rational purpose, unless one considers the perverse entertainment value. Wow, decadent and particularly evil at the same time.

Did you catch Terry Jones' take on that? (3 part TV doc series, "Barbarians") He said that the gladiatorial shows were a way to "import" the routine violence at the fringes of the Roman Empire into the very centre of Roman society - as a safe, but thrilling spectacle, for the "civilised" Roman audience. And of course, the deaths and maiming in the amphitheatre were both hyper-real (gladiator "classes", with their special uniforms and weapons that never appear on the battlefield) and absolutely deadly for most participants.

Position of the majority of Russians both living in Russia and Ukraine, is that Smallrussia and Crimea became part of Ukrainian Soviet Republic as a result of Communist Party political games. Nobody asked local, predominately Russian population if they want to be a part of something they never were. It didn't mutter so much when it was still a part of the same country, but when Russia and Ukraine became independent, many Russian people in both countries felt that they've been cheated and a hostile to Russia nation gets to keep territories that it doesn't has a legitimate claim to.
...I quite agree with this analysis, because there is no willing to go to peace in this war, mainly from the US neo-cons. It seems to me that the purpose of this war is to keep on a juicy business and get rid of a maximum casualties possible, both sides. I believe Russians understood that, the reason why they adapted their strategy to the attrition. This war will last up to the last Ukrainian...

Yes this is a rather airy fairy and cynical analysis. Not everyone is performing.
Very wrong, Ukraine was depended on USA/EU support already since 2015. I distinctly remember their various representatives visiting NATO AND EU headquarters asking for 'support' because they were already fighting for 'democracy' for Europe ( whatever that meant then and whatever that means now)
Both Ukraine and Israel could have made peace (Minsk accords; Two-State solution) but were encouraged not to by US power. Both Israel and Ukraine have instead been oriented towards serving US interests in their respective regions, and wholly to their detriment.
The destruction of much of Ukraine and hundreds of thousands of young Ukranians shows once again the degree US power is willing to sacrifice others in pursuit of its goals.

I have paid some thought to Baudrillard's angle in this war. It really seems like the western political classes are living in a mirror house made of war propaganda (made by their own institutions), conformity and group think and pure political and intellectual incompetence (inability to realistic analysis). I have a different spin on these things. The west suffers from a crisis in masculinity. The feminist class has worked overtime to get rid of the patriarchy, but the patriarchy was a balanced system. I'm sorry but this is a misleading and dangerous description of events. It was theatre only in as much as the Ukrainian military and political leadership knew that they didn't have the resources to win.
It wasn't theatre, it was a juggernaut set in motion decades earlier that was pushed on with everybody on top dancing whilst it gained momentum. There was no stopping it without collapsing Ukraine and NATO. I'm sure even the Ukrainian and NATO military were shocked and surprised by the level of failure of the whole operation. They thought they could focus on a small victory and spin it out of proportion. They didn't even get that.
Great interview overall, with one quibble: Hamas is achieving political goals for regional powers it is tied to.
Ukraine's counteroffensive had 0% chance of working. There were many many analysts saying that. Most of the front still has not reached or passed Russia's first line of defense, yet you can still read "leaders" in Ukraine claiming they will "liberate Crimea". Pure theater which only feels real to people because the media and some governments are saying it, but this counteroffensive was stillborn and the people who claim that it has a chance of success are in on the scheme or listen only to those that are in on the scheme.

I think this kind of analysis overcomplicates things. There are material interests, and the interests of individuals don’t always coincide with those of the collective they belong (at least nominally to). So yes, oligarchs in Ukraine may certainly have considered in their interests to do what their western backers required of them. But to claim they knew they had no chances of retaking the territory they had lost and they were willing to suffer catastrophic losses in the process, ultimately threatening their own security, that is to much of a stretch. It’s more likely they believed some intermediate objective could be accomplished and that would have kept them fed by maintaining western support. In this they miscalculated, but not because they knew their actions would lead to total failure and they consciously decided to undertake them anyway.

Pretty obvious to anyone who’s been paying attention, but might be new insights for a lot of people. I would add that this isn’t an “It’s not this, it’s that,” argument, but more of a, “It’s both this and that.” That is, sure it’s all a show, but there is infinite capacity for hope and self delusion in the human heart (even for political leaders) and one assumes that some of them actually believe the idealistic blather used to sell the conflict, or at least have hope that it will achieve some good (as they define it.)

That the Ukrainian state and elites are focused on - and at least to an extent controlled by - foreign interests is an excellent insight. It's remarkable how many top Ukrainian politicians and wealthiest oligarchs are of Jewish or other non-Ukrainian ethnic backgrounds. Are these groups also as overrepresented among the troops fighting, being maimed, and dying at the front? And are the military and diplomatic objectives pursued by the Zelensky government in the best interests of the people who are making the biggest sacrifices?
It's not difficult to obtain the information here in Russia. The current Ukraine/NATO vs Russia War casualty list is approximately 740,000 Ukrainian military personnel dead, 227,000 Russian military personnel dead, and approximately 3,800 NATO contractors dead.

I haven't followed events in Gaza closely, but Hamas seemed to be seeking attention after years of Corona and Ukraine took the spotlight away. Israel seems unwilling or unable to mobilise for a serious invasion and imho is just talking big and flexing its muscles. I think they will use this time of international indecision to simply create an 'acceptable' 10:1 or 20:1 kill ratio for the whole episode and then back out. No Northern Hezbollah front either.
Ukraine were not prepared to go "all in" without air support after they first encountered the minefields. Russian have 600km of front line to defends with major losses of soldiers and arms. Ukraine have made small gains on the way to Tokmak which is only 15 kim south and is very strategic. There is a new front forming in Kherson which is another huge problem for Russia.

iti s an original interpretation but I think not the most luckely....indeed one fo the reason of this was could be the testing of weponery ona real battelfield and against a real army, not those form Iraq, Siria and Afganistan... and probably the feedback was not that conforting... but I do not beloieve in this minimalistic approach to explain these geopolitical events!
