- Witchcraft and Shamanism have uncanny similarities. Could it be true that the "European-Style", known as "Witchcraft", be the last living vestiges of "European-Shamanism" preserved within Traditional Folk Magic?

A common term for witches here is “walker between worlds” and I agree there are many correlations between witchcraft and shamanism.
Yeah, there's no doubt in my mind that european traditional magic had many similar themes to siberian shamanism. In fact it may be the oldest of religions, honouring animals, spirit shapeshifting and spirit flight. This respect for animals is one of the greatest losses to our psyches I think, and it's intriguing that this is the most feared and condemned by christianity.
I’m Native American and believe “shamanism/pagan” religions like ours are truly the oldest in the world. It is a shame that our peoples are treated with disrespect, cruelty and abuse. One day the earth and its leaders will realize that native peoples all around the world just want to protect/love Mother Earth and spread creators traditions 🪶💕

You have just described my daily life. I am a regular guy of north western European descent, living in USA for roughly 9 generations. I have no fucking clue who I am, and yet this is me. Honoring and bargaining with spirit for survival. What a great presentation.

I knew from very early on as a child that their were things seen and unseen both good and bad and being incarnated into a family that followed the Mormon religion did not make existence any easier. I new it was mostly bullshit, like most, with good and bad elements with plenty of contradictions. My mother often told me about how I, as a toddler would talk to birds and "pretend" to communicate. The blending of real and unreal, alive and dead, right and wrong, good and bad served only to strengthen my beliefs in something different. When I discovered Shamanism all the pieces came together and there was a name for "weirdos" like me. A fellow Shamanist and my first Sweat Lodge ceremony introduced me to my true self opening me up to a wider view of reality and a better understanding of what truth is.. This video is truth.. I just LOVE how Arith manages to link previous subjects he explored to current ones, and I admire how he can still summarise it well enough so that a newbie will not get lost in the video. That aside, the new scene to be an excellent addition. I was quite worried that the wind would destroy the audio quality, but I noticed minimal effect. I hope we could see more lectures at various other archeological and scenic locations, if possible, related in location that is related to the subject. I honestly am excited just by the idea of it.

Spiritual leader isn't that accurate of a title either. There just isn't any good terminology in English to use besides something like magic healer or witch doctor, but even those are far from adequate, and then the descriptors change by culture and circumstance. You also have multiple words within cultures for a shaman, such as Pajé and Dzuliferi. In some cultures, shamans are not even something you become but something you are born as, a different type of soul compared to most people. I really don't know if witchcraft is equivalent or not to shamanism but I personally view them as being different. Shamans generally have rough lives where the spirits have extra influence upon them, but this connection goes both ways and allows the shaman to do some incredible healing. The biggest problem of course is simply a lack of magical tradition out of Europe to make comparisons, given historical events.

The Samí still have their Noaídi, but last I lived in the Finnmark region of Norway, they were reluctant to share anything. However, anyone who had a stroke of bad luck, would say they'd been "gannet" or cursed - and that was all of us saying that, ethnic Norwegians, immigrants, and of course the Samí; and from the fishermen to the bank managers.

Man your words are often amazing.. I wish with my limited grasp of what is essentially "foreign" languages to me .. in your case English I could come up with such an elegant way of stating .. "Traditional folk magic " etc. etc. and its interpretation ... both in middle ages and today ... ie .. a belief that its "devil worship" ..and yeah its totally different but the way you phrased it .. in what must be not your original native language.. I ASSUME of course.. excellent man.. ie for those of abram and his faiths.. its neither the worship of the Jinn.. for certain sectors .. NOR the worship of devils..but then again anything other than the trinity .. or God directly was all devils..anyway.. let me get back to feeling the vibe of the land trees and other such stuff.. Im damned anyway according to .. It's no picnic, but that's the way it is. Wherever I've lived, I served my community. They somehow knew where to come, usually by referral.

I'm definitely more active in the late spring and summer. I did collect some nettles few days ago but mostly at this time of the year I just want to huddle under blankets and eat. I live for the sun and wish humans could hibernate all winter.

I had to watch this video because I have had all kinds of synchronicity around red moths today, and then I see what appears to be the image of a red moth here...extraordinary! By the way, there was also the "Samana" of ancient Iranians...the archetype of the what is often referred to as a Shaman is widespread in the Indo-European world, even though the linguistic links were lost at some point!
Someone with native roots in the Americas I consider myself a healer/guide/witch/bruja. Happy to have been raised in a culture where the fear of the unknown is what drives us closer to honoring ancestors, spirit and the earth.

Do you think that those spirits and non human persons are really invisible? Or is it that we don’t see them. Maybe in animistic societies, which is like 90 percent of human history, we saw them
The idea that spirits are always intangible and invisible is new. Older worldviews, including Christian ones, had spirits appearing and physically interacting. Maybe only to special people though, for example saints.

Super late to this episode. The struggle has been real. This was a great conversation. I think these days too many people have watched too many witch and sci-fi movies, wish they had some kind of power and go read a couple of books and boom, instant witch or shaman. I always thought this, it seems intuitively correct. especially if "witchcraft" is descended from the pagan religions of Britain and Ireland. There is a strong shamanistic thread and underpinning to both Norse and Celtic practice, through druidry, seiðr, the bardic tradition, and many other aspects of both.
I would recommend a book for all who are reading this: Taliesin: Shamanism and the Bardic Mysteries in Britain and Ireland (1991) by John Matthews
Pagan only means non-chrsitian. Religion is not plural. religion is Religion and it all comes from earlier religion. Pagan beliefs are considered Proto-Christian, or leads to. All religion is the same and it all involves magic.
try to understand that it never really matters what you think, or what you believe. You must be sure and prove "it"

Thank you for this. I was taught by a hereditary craft Elder and then later came across modern core-shamanism and I would say there were similarities, with journeying and interaction, making charms and some other practices, and also from what I have read around other cultures practices and also an animist sort of worldview

There are definitely some similarities in practice between 'shamanism' and witchcraft and the public services they provided. The thing is if we look at what few cunning folk practices that survived there was spellcraft for success, as well as deliberate failure. Spells invoked spirits (ancestor, underworld or nature), but sometimes they were simply pure will with symbolism and incantation.
There are examples of this in the Icelandic spell book Galdrabók (ATA Ämb2) from the 1600s which is filled with staves for blessings, protection, manipulation spells AND curses. Some invoked the Christian God, some the Nordic, many didn't invoke beings at all. I think that's the distinction. The "left-hand" practices. The act of "bewitchment" is the distinction.
Considering the change in tone my suspicion is the 'witch' is an emersion of old spiritual practices in confrontation with the encroaching (and later persecuting) Christian reality, and the nature of their practice changed with it like you said to survive. It became almost mercenary. Of course some things were picked up on the way (simpler alchemy, musings in Latin, other crafts... etc). I see it more as reactionary than just purely syncretic. It takes a lot of pain and anger to not only curse or get someone else to curse for you, but the need to teach it as a practice I believe is revealing.
Thank you for this. I call everything that's related to magic witchcraft. In here we have a bit of a movement to take the word back, so it means something good - and not the Christian meaning. So, for me, it has always been "norse witchcraft", specific because there wasn't a better word for it (I sometimes call it norse magic, plain and simple). But shamanism, not only is accurate (again, thank you for that), it also resonates better. The differences were right there and I just saw it for the first time!
I'm not European but there are similar things that look like shamans...
At Sumatra, there's Datuk who communicates with spirit and there is pencak element that are similar things like pentagram that used by witchcraft or traditional folk magic...
And regarding the church, is there anything that can be done?
I think folk medicine went underground and became something acceptable to the local church. In the U.S. there are a lot of folk medicine and healing practices that use Bible verses but imo they're a syncretization of older cunning work before science and Christianity took over. Appalachian folk medicine is one. Hoodoo is another folk tradition that is a syncretization of African Caribbean beliefs, French Catholicism and Native American plants and roots. Neither is a religion and neither is closed despite what people say. They're both considered folk magic and both have people who are better at some of the healing aspects than others. This is different from most traditional Native medicine practices. The Native American Church is another example of syncretization of pan-Indigenous beliefs and Christianity. I have a friend who is a road man for the NAC. I believe he does very good healings and when someone in my family was diagnosed with leukemia he was the first person I contacted for prayers. My family member survived thanks to many people's prayers and chemo/radiation treatments but sometimes the folk medicine is more available and approachable than older traditions. That's my personal experience anyway.

I make my own everything up. Everything except for the basics of earth air fire water. As i go, as my spirit moves me to. I incorporate what's around me into ceremony and i just learn about what's around me, plants and animals. About how they can be utilized, about how much should be utilized. Im an observer and in practice, a forever beginner. But if i find out someone else does what i do, i don't know what i would do. And i don't think my understanding could be explained well enough for anyone to repeat it. To me, this is the authentic bond with my surroundings. It's pure magic. I like to learn about everything, but can't be taught. Does that make any sense?

Many traditions have links and similarities, such as my being the same "sign" in both tree and animal astrology (astrology being entirely the wrong word to use here) in some of Irish and the old America/Canadian tribes traditions. A salmon and - well more of a bush than a tree, I think it was the hawthorn.

It is important to be careful about the etymology of words like these because not everyone would agree with your idea about the root meaning/location of the word "Shaman". Indeed "Mircea Eliade noted that the Sanskrit word śramaṇa, designating a wandering monastic or holy figure, has spread to many Central Asian languages along with Buddhism and could be the ultimate origin of the Tungusic word".

Question _ does spirits exists, does ancestral spirits exists and their vivid visits; are they real? Does that mean each culture have their own "real" ancestral spirits with whom they interact.

all in all there must be hundreds of names for
different kinds of witches, shamans and healers..
the biggest categories probably being gender, age,
whether they do / don´t do harmful magic, whether
they use / don´t use a drum, whether they work with
/ without fire and the place / time that they do
their sessions (day / night, which obviously tells
a lot about the spirits they´re working with).
personally i don´t trust anyone who has to hide
from the sun, just my (very biased) opinion :)
also the finnish word for woman is nai-nen
which literally means granddaughter of the
fire (meaning that all women / their fires
are her daughters).
it doesn´t get any more obvious than that
(also very gender specific).
naturally there were also men that worked
with the fire spirit.. that´s when they said

Hi Arith, great video and the dress theme in green against the trees is really fitting, especially for the topic of the video.
A couple of thoughts about the fey folk, as they are spiritual beings then they will have easier contact with the dead. A related but different observation is that in the classical (pre-christian) world, the gods were thought of as being more mortal than the all encompassing Christian god, this included the Aesir of the Norse.
I have often thought of reverting to traditions of my ancestors but International law doesn't allow raping and pillaging 😢.

Shaman is related to the culture and land. Shamanic cultures do not always relate what they do to “magic” and some even shun the term- to relate the various cultures that host shamanic lodges- it is very “folk magic” in origin- thats what creates their dialogue in the ethereal.
Witch is about service to the circle and the elemental chain and uses a blend of cultures to form a pattern to their magic. Its not just folk magic. Witches aren’t in service to their communities- just their oath and the circle.
Both deal with spirits- they deal with them in different ways

Warrior originates from the old French word Werreior yet we apply it freely to other cultures when we recognize the Warriors of that culture. People coddle/infantilize so called Amerindians/Siberians for no reason (or to buff their Savior persona), there is nothing wrong with using the term Shaman freely.
There's a perfectly good reason to respect Native American and Siberian cultures. Even as Natives, we don't use the term shaman.
