I needed NGK spark plugs for my Honda, I'm so scared of Chinese fakes from Amazon, I paid $12 more and bought them directly from the manufacturer.
You are correct to be scared of Amazon. I've had nothing but crap parts from them for electronic car parts. Don't do it! Pay the difference like you did.
I have never gotten a fake part from rock auto.
You did the right thing. I’ve found so many counterfeits from online sources. Good counterfeits too (meaning hard to identify) even the packaging looks legit
i wouldn't even trust the way amazon ships car parts.
You can never go wrong by ordering from the OEM, be it auto parts, tools, camping gear, etc..
When my 07 Cadillac had that code the Cadillac dealership in Vancouver Washington wanted to charge me over $3200 for repairs after charging me for a $250 diagnostic fee. I drove the car home and my buddy came over and said well let's take it to my friend who has a scan tool. He's a retired mechanic. His friend checked the codes and said that it "looks like a loose fuel cap. When was the last time you got gas?" Well that was the problem. You can't trust dealerships. 5 years later runs like a dream.
That's. Robbery did you go back and cuss him out
Ray don't forget the spare tire. when I worked for Toyota the spare was almost always the cause of the light being on. Great video hate those aftermarket gas caps
That's great input. I would have never thought about the spare being the cause. Makes sense.
Thanks for taking the time to make so many videos. Your info helps so many people. I don't have any of these cars or issues but still enjoy your content!
I had to yell at my friend whom I helped install cheap Chinese wheel bearings on his vw jetta. Those crappy bearings failed almost like clockwork within 2 months. He complained saying oem was 3 times the price I told him he already paid more buying multiple cheap parts than he would've paid buying oem. It's been 4 years since then and the oem is still going strong
Napa sells pretty decent bearings too. I use them all the time at my shop on older vehicles.
for some things oem doesnt matter but for vital parts its always better to spend a little more- i changed the crankshaft position sensor on my xterra and the oem nissan was $40 or so and chinese ones were $20 origingal lasted 11 years and it was a bit of a pain to change so i figure not doing it again for 10 years is worth $20
I hope you got rid of your cheap Chinese friend and got an oem one.
VW cars are trash even new. Designed to last 5 years and get a new one
@@maxwellmelon69 almost all modern vehicles arnt made to last. They put plastic parts on the internals of the engine 😒 setting you up for failure right out the gate making you a repeat parts customer for the life of that car.
This is the very reason why I love to watch your videos. You are honest and very Sure of yourself and whatever you do.
It is refreshing to know that there are more people like me.
the cheap aftermarket gas cap may as well had been a cheese bagel for all the good it did
At least a cheese bagel could have another use! Yum!
Come on man! Dorman cheese bagels are delicious.
I cannot believe someone insulted a bagel like that. Next time use white bread please. LOL!!!
@@johnangelico667 agreed, not much good for a gas cap but works well with Pastrami, Dejon mustard, Monterrey jack and Valassic dills...maybe a handful of potato chips on the side
@@AJGreen-cn8kk lol I chose the bagel because of the hole, cheese was the first that came to mind, must be because they're my favorites.
I had a couple of issues with fuel caps similar to this. I bought 2, one for my Trans Am and 1 for my Torrent. Both were from that online company named after the rain Forrest that owns the world. They both said they were authorized for my cars. But then engine lights came on for both cars. I put the old ones back on after cleaning them with brake cleaner and the lights went off.
Its amazing what the correct gas cap can do. Also can show what the incorrect one can cause with all the warning lights coming on. Another great video...short but to the point and a good lesson about aftermarket parts. Not all aftermarket are bad but I would think anyone would be able to feel when a gas cap is on properly or not.
Very important to have correct fuel tank cap. Informative as always.
I learned that the evap system is the cars way of utilizing the evaporated gas fumes by siphoning them from the tank and feeding them to the engine rather than expelling them to the environment and polluting.
(Edit: I work at a part store and watch these now and then to help educate myself on things I come across while on the job, so these are actually really helpful when I read someone's codes at the store).
If you have to read codes at your job, never speculate and do not recommend parts. I'm a parts guy who does know how to diagnose and the only thing I do is tell them is how to test and reach their own conclusions. Some customers get annoyed because they want a quick fix, but that's not really how it works. A cam or crank code could be a sensor or it could be a damaged reluctor ring or bad engine timing. A misfire code could be a bad ignition component or fuel injector, but it also could be loss of compression or incorrect fuel/air ratio. In other words, don't give them loadout suggestions for their parts cannon.
I was in the habit of topping off my tank when getting gas, just to get another half gallon or so in it. But the fuel cap light would come on after a few weeks. I changed the cap 3 times until I heard that topping off your tank can cause this. I don't top it off anymore and I've had no more problems. I guess I'm a slow learner. :) Thanks for the video, Ray.
For me it depends on the part I'm getting. I go cheap sometimes but only on certain stuff. The rest of the time its price to performance
I had the exact same code P0456 on my 2006 Toyota Avalon just 3 months ago. CEL came on so I went by Autozone to figure out why. Saw it was evap emissions leak. I took the gas cap off and put it back on in the parking lot before I left. After a few drive cycles the light went off and all was right in the world!
Excellent description of how the evap system works ray, well done once again.
Just did this same repair on my fiance's 4runner 2 weeks ago. Her parents replaced the fuel cap with a non-OEM unit awhile back and it was clearly the culprit. I put a OEM Toyota cap on for $25 and have not seen a light since. Just glad it wasn't a purge valve.
ALWAYS great information on fault code possible / actual causes.
I put my spanners away when computers started to RULE. I love the old and simple!
The evap system explanation was good. I learned a bit about that today
I really like the new microphone but wow... it does seem to amplify "loud noises" just as much as your audio but that isn't terrible. Thank you for all you provide to us as a teaching moment.
It bothers me, personally
@@dthatcher7 I think it adds to the realism.
Happy Labor Day to all you working persons who keep America cookin!
What I love about evap systems is that you’re actually saving fuel with an emissions system. It’s tiny, but yes, your car literally does run on fumes-at least partially.
You don't. You either use 100% of fuel in tank or waste what evaporates. You can't save fuel by burning it. Even if it changed it state to gases
@@SmallKittyPaw not saving the fuel but you are slightly getting more out of it with the EVAP system burning those vapours
@@SmallKittyPaw "You can't save fuel by burning it." Duh, of course you can. By not wasting fuel, you save the fuel that would have been used in its stead. It's not rocket surgery.
I wonder if vehicles would run better without the parasitic drawer or ball and vacuum switches in the evening that system not sure just figured I'd ask hey everybody have a good night
I ran into this same problem myself when changed gas cap on my pathfinder. wont stay tight. this vid just reminded me to order an oem one. thx
I have the same code in my Corolla and I replaced the gas cap with one from the dealer, cleared the code and it returned several weeks later. I haven't had time to diagnose it so I just clear it a few days before inspection and It stays cleared long enough to pass. If I was near Ray I would have him find the issue and fix it properly but I live 1200 miles from him.
check your purge valve under the hood. make sure its holding back vacuum. easy enough to test it with a handheld vacuum pump/gauge.
My neighbor is a DIY mechanic. He seems to fix everything by popping the hood and manually opening the throttle body and revving the engine until the noise stops. Its Belgium. Only a few generations have been walking erect although now the knuckles are hairy because they no longer drag on the ground. I can't believe that they built F-16s here, and they were good. They invented the French fry too.
Also. EVAP leak does not happen on a full tank or below 1/4. It runs it's test between 3/4 and 1/4. I'm sure you already know this. But to everyone who doesn't.
The sad thing today is the overwhelming numbers of counterfeit parts, that are sold by reputable stores. And you never know if the store even knows they are counterfeit now.
I just watched a video of an Asian workshop making mufflers with Suzuki imprinted on the casing. The visible metal parts were made from new materials, but everything inside was made from rusty recycled 200 ltr oil drums.
One thing about tire pressure is whether the tires are hot or cold when checked. My Honda TPMS seems to read a couple of pounds low compared to several gauges. If I set them to 35 when they are hot my light will probably be coming on in the near future.
I've never seen any manual tell to check the pressure when the tyres are warm.
I assume it's just a c.y.a thing, if they tell you do to it while it's cold then you are forced to do it before you drive rather than driving with potentially incorrect pressures.
I watch mine in my vehicle quite a lot (slow punctures) so I know how much they raise by and can just top them up as needed warm or cold.
You have yourself a great Labor Day! Thanks for the video. 🍺
Good lesson, don’t over complicate the problem. Thanks for sharing.
I think that you have mentioned this before but overfilling your Gas Tank to Max Level is a No-No, it will send Liquid Fuel through Gas Solenoid and mess everything up in whole Cannister System--codes will be sent and parts might have to be replaced..
This is one of those codes that can have multiple causes. My Silverado threw this code a couple years ago and after ruling out the gas cap and fuses I found the cause to be the evap canister solenoid. It had gone bad and the evap canister valve was stuck in the open position, aka the "evap leak". Replaced the solenoid, cleared the code, and it never returned so I assumed it was a good fix.
My local mechanic tells me to not top off the tank beyond the gas pump "click", (sorry, I couldn't help myself) because that can goof up the evap canister. So I pump oddball amounts of gas.
Happy Labor Day weekend Ray. I actually have a 3 day weekend from my shop. Closed Sunday and Monday and my day off is Tuesday. I think I'm going to go play in the woods this weekend.
have a great 3 day weekend Kevin
Ray, thanks for the great videos. I was raised around used car lots and gas stations and learned a lot about mechanics and being a mechanic. I never went to tech school for being a mechanic and I would never want to be a mechanic working on today's cars. I enjoyed working on the old 40's thru 70's cars and trucks, but for today's cars you really need that schooling. I do as much as possible on my older cars, truck, and motorcycle as well as lawn equipment. You do really good work and have good patience with tough situations. Well done young man!! By the way, did the correct gas cap fix the trouble lights problem? Have yourself a great day.
Short and sweet video Ray but enjoy watching them all. Short or long
Oh the struggle of living in a imperfect world! Rainman Ray is not fazed
Interesting, looking back as a an apprentice in Glasgow, Ford Sierra 1.3,customer left his filler cap on his way down south on holiday at the fuel station ⛽ ,he replaced with universal cap at halfords, car broke down towing a caravan, car was brought back on a low bed, turned out the fuel tank had collapsed as the universal filler cap couldn't breathe, never forget that one, another occasion on a Ford Sierra think it was a 2litre S,he hade a puncture threw the punctured wheel in the boot ,car wouldn't start, low bed again 😳 he had triggered the switch in the boot that cuts the fuel pump in case of a rear end collision, that's roundabout 1984,still remember after all these years.
Several years ago, I forgot to put the filler cap back on my VW Rabbit after filling the tank. When I pulled away from the station, the engine had less power than normal Somehow, I noticed the filler door was open, quickly went back to the station and retrieved the filler cap, which I had left on top of the pump. Engine power was fine after that.
I do like the videos thank you for your professionalism...
I got my car last year (first car, '03 Camry) and it had a generic fuel cap and oil cap... yeah it gave errors on the fuel cap. I quickly replaced both of those. No reason to go $1 cheaper.
I’ve had my ‘03 Camry for 16 years. 290K miles. Great car. I’ve replaced interior door handles, starter (x2), radiator and keep it tuned up. That’s it. Maintenance is easy.
Currently doing a head gasket replacement on a Mitsubishi 3000gt, wich is a really expensive job in itself, though the customer has insisted on getting the parts himself, so i now work with Yes Race Go Better parts and there will be no warranty given on this job. But hey, he saved like 200 bucks!
My gas cap failed at emissions on my ranger but I never had a CEL. AZ emissions had a program that would replace your cap for free. I thought cool! Free parts. Day later my CEL came on for...EVAP, small leak... I went to Autozone and same thing. Finally went to the dealership and paid $5 more, problem went away finally.
Have a great day Ray!! 🙏❤💪
Should always check the pressure in the SPARE tire too. Now, with TPMS systems in all five, the spare goes low and triggers the low pressure warning light. As well, it's always great insurance to check the spare's pressure in case it has to be installed on side of road. I puzzled over a 4 Runner that threw the low tire pressure system; checked the 4 tires on ground - fine. Checked the spare - LOW! In fact, at 25K miles on ODO and after a full tire change-out by a reputable nationwide company, the spare had never been cranked down and checked (from lack of marks on the lowering crank). Air valve was facing up where the spare tire rode under the body.
Next time you put tires on your 4Runner, put 5 on and do 5-tire rotations. Your tires will cost more up front, but will last longer, and you're guaranteed to have a healthy, fresh spare if/when you have a flat. 4Runners come with 5 identical wheels, so it's not an eyesore to do so either, unless you bought it used and previous owner did something bone-headed like get a new set of rims and only got 4. Then it's a different deal for you. Take advantage and get new rims too!
I prefer to wait for the second tire change out after new car purchase, and move best of the current tire set to spare, and buy 4 new. Next time, that will save me about $170 and since I never push my luck on the current tires, the next spare will be VERY capable of handling a thousand more miles if I ever have to use it.
Always surprises me how many people don’t know how to check the air pressure in their tires. One of the first things my dad taught me how to do.
And a tire pressure gauge is sooo inexpensive.
I bet he taught you how to drive a manual transmission too. My wife prefers a manual transmission, and when she took her car in for service one time a couple years ago, when she handed her keys to the service tech, he got in, looked around, couldn't figure out what to do to move her car and had to go get someone else to move her car into service.
That is truly pathetic. How can you trust someone who can't even figure out how to drive a car with a manual transmission to figure out even the simplest of issues if something arises during that oil and filter change, or to even get THAT right?
He's probably the guy that put 6.5 quarts of oil in my 4.0 V6 4Runner that read 6" up past the "full" mark on the dipstick when I checked it after I cranked it up and could HEAR oil sloshing around. They had to do a drain and refill with FIVE and a half quarts.
Why they couldn't just drain it down to the appropriate level is beyond me. Maybe fear of an oil bath? But that's exactly what they did:
Un-klick, pullen ze plug, letten it ride, dripp dripp dropp, thredden in ze plug, re-klicken ze plug, and pumpen in ze 5.5 qvarts, und checken und rechecken ze shtick.
I'm surprised damage wasn't done with a smokeshow besides. I bet they hate those glass walls that look into the service shop from the service advisor counter!
One hour ago and 11k views. Ray is getting paid !! Always a good watch !
Man it's impressive you know word for word how the systems on cars operate. It helps learn me!!!! You're awesome ray
As an amateur "weekend mechanic" I'm the place where buying right parts is the same problem as repair itself. Cheap ones are not good, but expensive ones can be a rip-off too.
OE stuff has least fails
Any time there's an evap or vacuum leak on toyotas, the VSC will be disabled and TCS will also be disabled because both of those systems also run on vacuum (or at least used to), so if there's any faults they turn those off and pop up the idiot lights
Ray, if one tire was 15 lbs lower than the others, it must have a pretty significant leak. I would think you'd raise it up and inspect the tire for a nail or some other visible foreign object. Adding air only addresses the symptom. Oh, like the new "speaker" on your camera.
Knowing ray I'm positive he did that. I don't think he found a flat repair to be entertaining for us so he just moved on along
I think that at this stage he was assessing and documenting. Doing the actual repairs will come later.
@@cotyluckett I was thinking that. Sometimes he doesn't show everything he does.
Short and sweet with a lot of information.
My mom's subarus cap doesn't click which annoys the crap outta me!
I've had new gas caps leak many times. I recommend the NAPA brand, haven't had any if those leak new.
Thanks for making a video on a holiday. Always informative and entertaining. Short is good too. See you tomorrow while I'm making my coffee. And don't forget to have a great day!
Super short one, but some important information that people should know! Most wouldn't think something as simple as a gas cap not sealing properly could cause all those warning lights and disabled systems!
Had that same issue on my old Toyota T100 P/U. I saw that the gas cap gasket was cracked and very probably leaking. I bought a cheap Stant after market gas cap and it was not even close in design to the OEM model. The gasket on the Stant cap, however, appeared exactly the same diameter and thickness as the OEM cap. I switched out the rubber gaskets and used my original cap. Everything was fine. Codes gone...
That fuel cap did not seem to lock at all. I would have thought that would be obvious to anyone who attempted to unscrew it.
Hey Ray...Love the videos, especially the humor and banter. Now that you have an external speaker (aka microphone 😄), I'd love to hear more banter from your coworkers too. Like when they walk up to ask you stuff or crack jokes.
I love your videos and always watching something new and learning something new with you ray
The “car with the squiggles lines” is the skids mode activated. When you want to leave 1 (or 2 if you have a good car) black marks when you drag someone off the line. Hehe sorry had to comment that.
The OCD of my brain still not seeing that it was actually at 35lbs at the end because Ray put a link to another video in the exact position where the meter was is....
*Welp, another sleepless night it is then.*
I had a Volvo with a bad fuel cap gasket, bought a cheapo fuel cap and removed it's gasket which replaced the worn out Volvo cap gasket perfectly, chucked the cheapo cap and worn Volvo fuel cap gasket,
No dooo-DEEEE-Dooo and wearing shorts in the shop? is it an off-day? GREAT evap system operation explanation! Thank you!
Yes the microphone on the GoPro sounds great
I wonder if it's possible to just replace the gasket on the gas cap.
6:30 you got us here Ray
Still very informative. Thank you
Why can't the aftermarket get a simple thing like a gas cap right? When the gas prices went through the roof, my sister bought locking caps for her Tundra and CRV. Exact same cap for both. Both threw an EVAP leak code. Both caps leaked. Good thing she didn't throw the old caps away. Told her to look at the bright side. Chances are if someone is going to steal your gas, they would punch a hole in the tank, not siphon it out. 😈
Those 4runners will set the traction control lights when hooked up to obdII sometimes
While returning from a dock bar in Maryland yesterday, I decided to check the oil while refueling. I leaned over and said "Poppinin zee hood" - my wife said "What did you just say?"
Thanks for the bonus Ray
Happy Labor Day to you and your family!!!
Quickest Ray video I have seen
In the past I had a check engine light come on in my 2012 Ram, when I had filled my truck up with gas I didn’t screw the gas cap on until I heard three clicks, only because I got in a hurry
Ran across your stuff in the usual way. Been watching you on and off for a few days. Good stuff. We gonna like and sub and all that noise.
Junk parts or wrong parts? That looked like it was for GM.
I agree GM
Open the door, throw out the Dorman
Nothing wrong with an aftermarket fuel cap as long as it's actually model specific. This was probably the first one they grabbed off the shelf in the oil change section at walmart without looking at any part numbers, assuming they're all identical regardless of make.
Exactly. It looks like GM.
found that if fuel tank is more that 3/4 full or less that 1/4, the system will not test the EVAP and if you live in places like NY and you need 3 out of 5 sensors set and you have 2 and the one is the EVAP you can cheat the test by keeping your fuel under 1/4 (easiest and 3/4 takes more watching, and as long as the EAVP is not tripped and you have 3 others that are set, you can skip thru inspection and have another year to evade the EVAP problem
Yes, people should do better, always get the correct work done. Just getting an abs recirculating pump rebuild done. Unfortunately PSA pair pumps to the car, so it’s just easier to have the seals etc refitted and have the part brought up to spec. Fitting a new one is expensive and only a dealership can pair it to the car with their Lexia software.
But it’s a safety issue so best to get it done.
I thought the "squiggly line" indicator was telling me to do a burn out!
No it's telling you to watch out for snakes.
That reminds me my wife's Toyota RAV4 has an EVAP code and I have to check out her gas cap as well.
Mis matched tires can cause traction control because wheel speed sensors pick up tires turning different speeds.
Again, great video and great thing about that traction control light, not very usefull for me in europe, but you never knows.
Toyota knew people would ignore CEL for evap system error so they set their ECU to turn off traction control etc so it couldn't be ignored...crafty!
Love me a 4th gen 4Runner. Mine with the 4.7L had that same code, new OEM gas cap fixed it right up.
Thank you Ray. Cheers.
I always learn something watching you
O o o is sooo bad about selling Chinese made cheap junk parts. Worst of all the chain stores... I had a Suburban with a bad window switch. Customer asked me to install his part, which I do, but with the CLEAR understanding that if their part is faulty, they pay labor every time I have to do the work. It took 3 switches to get a decent one, and after six months, the bulbs are already faulty in the "new" switch. I told him to go online and buy the AC Delco switch.
Another great video with excellent information! Thank you!!
Our 4Runners keeps turning on. Replaced with oem cap and no change.
Had a great day the other day, not so much today until I saw this video. Then I decided to go to go to bed and recalibrate my system. Sometimes equally important.
This is why OEM is always the answer
Ray, I love your work. Last video you asked for opinions about the new mic: Tinny, lots of BG noise. Wind stands out. That said, will always dig these vids, and I'm not even a car guy.
Next, customers come in complaining the low fuel light is on. Turns out vehicle needed fuel ;)
In my Nissan which the placard says tires should be at 33 - a one pound drop will make the TPMS light illuminate.
I had a gas cap issue with my current vehicle, a Hyundai accent because the old gas cap couldn't click when it was put on. The car had trouble starting somedays and somedays it didn't, it was totally random. Sometimes letting it sit for a few minutes after trying to start it would let it start. Once I got a oem one the problem went away.
I don't skimp out on parts. OEM parts only for my vehicles when possible.
One thing I do hate to see are those cars brought in that have the liquid air fresheners. Having had one that leaked and melted the airvent plastic and dripped causing center console damage it wouldn't ever trust using them again.
Always here brother
Love your channel!!!
