All the crumbly mortar has to be removed!! Keep the rocks that fall out and then the whole wall needs to be repointed and rocks added back to the big holes. There are so many Tubers that have done this so you can see what they did Maya Feliz, Indigo escape, Raising vogayers and Irish homestead to name a few
Some of the walls I wouldn't bother with like the one your Pa was looking to do. You need nice stone behind it not slag mix. There's enough to do to hire a sand blaster then re-point in lime.
I follow one family in Italy doing the same, renovating a Stone house. and they use a pressure washer the first for clean all the dust. Was spectacular results.
Drew - It’s best to apply the acid to the rock faces to remove the cement/lime film. I would hold off the joints and just use the wire brush or use a sand blaster to erode the junk out. You do want to repoint the inside stone walls, I would use DHL lime with sand and maybe add in some of the clay you have to give it some color contrast. You should wash the walls down with fresh water a few times to clean off the acid film still on the wall at least where you tested. I did a brick wall which had cement even after using wire brushes and even sand blasting a few areas we did it, we did the acid to take the film off and used large towels with a sizable bucket of water.
i know you can't read all comments , but i did raise this point earlier this year . The dust doesn't all get sucked out or swept up , how about starting from the top room and ( i know it sounds weird but ) using a leaf blower to get as much dust out of the building as poss specially as there is still more painting to be done .
I was thinking air compressor hose to blow off the stones. Also I think you are to use some type of acid to clean the stones but check at stone quarry before trying anything.
Good morning from Northeast Florida. When you first chose the watermill for your Homestead, I could not see how you would survive this massive reconstruction project. Congratulations! One day at a time, holding hands with each other, you are making amazing progress.
Someone I love to watch do pointing is from "Portugal from Scratch." She uses lime and pointing tools, and then when it's almost dry, she uses what she calls a waking brush. It looks like an extra-long dish brush, and wack's the pointing; it turns out beautiful.
There are so many people from the van life community that have learned to do this. Use lime mortar in the cracks. I have not seen anyone seal the rocks once they are done on the walls. The indie project, are great at doing this. Also the pethricks and several other. Reach out to them to get their tips. This is a feature so slow and steady is the name of the game. Do your research to get your effect. You got this
You need Theo and Bee to come visit. They can show you how to clean and repoint your walls. Theo is an expert on how to chisel and point. I'm pretty sure he used lime to point with.
43 minutes with you guys - what a treat! I start my Sunday mornings with my coffee and several RUclips channels. You guys are the best, and I always see the best for last! Love you guys!♥♥♥
The wild squirrels in Portugal are all red squirrels. The population has been expanding and you can find them as far south as Lisbon. The Monsanto park in Lisbon has plenty of them. They might never reach the Algarve though, because they need oak trees to survive and there are very few oak trees in the Algarve.
If you watch Camper Vibe they are doing uo there really old cottage in Ireland and Louise went in a lime mortar course to learn how to do it, but she explains it so well in her videos, go them them out, as their walls look amazing now after all the work they've done. Not as fancy as your mill but it will still look amazing when they've finished.
Sorry haven't been watching as much I'd like but I recently lost my brother of liver cancer so very sad only 50 when he past in August! I love you all thank you for sharing ❤
We live in Missouri and my daughter's home had dated field rock on the exterior and on the interior fireplace wall. She was going to try and stain the rock with latex paint and a brush. I won't list my credentials but I recommend mixing all the latex paint they had on hand. It ended up a light greige. I mixed 5 parts water to 1 part paint in a five gal bucket. Then put it in an industrial spray bottle. We used cardboard to block the offspray. It was perfect and only took 30 minutes to do outside and in. This was 1994 and still looks great. Several people with the same rock wanted to hire us, so, we ended up making money on the side. It slightly muted the rock and mortar, unifying everything. Rock takes on the stain from the soil of the region, so we just used that concept. Try it on a small area. You may be able to incorporate your clay color in your mix. 👍😊
Drew! You’re such a hard worker! I wanted to cough the entire time I watched you cleaning those interior rocks. Lordy! The homes is looking nicer and nicer.
The guys from the channel “MakeDoGrow” made a pretty good job with their walls in the north side of Portugal.. using only natural products i think you guys should take a look and ask some tips! Love your channel! Both of you are doing a pretty amazing job, and respecting my country history! Thank you
In the us, we use dry ice blasters to clean. It drys out with low cleaning. Needs to be well ventilated. Works on stone and medal. The hard part is getting an aircon presser to run the dry ice gun.
At minute 24:00 I was like, "YYYAAAHHH" because Drew finally put on some protective wear. You REALLY don't want to breathe that stuff in - remember, it hardens on the wails, does the same in your lungs.
You can make some mortar about cake batter consistency and put some in a large plastic zip lock bag and cut a little piece of one corner off and squeeze it out onto the wall between the rocks to lock in the rocks that you uncover and with a damp sponge you can form the mortar to make it look more natural.
That stone is gorgeous. But it needs to be pointed. Watch earlier videos on “the indie project” where they clean their stone walls and eventually point them. It’s beautiful
Not sure if it will work as well with old lime based mortar or if you can even source it in Portugal but we always use diluted muriatic acid which is a form of already diluted hydrochloric acid to wash cement based mortar from stone masonry floors and walls. It really gets the stone clean to show off the color and texture of the rocks in a wall. Wear gloves, goggles and a mask in a ventilated area and use a spray bottle to apply just enough to wet the surface of the rocks and mortar then wipe clean with a sponge rinsed in a clean bucket of water. Use a penetrating stone/masonry spray applied sealer to get a lasting finish.
To remove that old mortar id buy a tool called a scaler, its run by a air compresser and vibrates to remove welding slang and flux off of welds after welding. You can use as much or little pressure on the surface as you want too. With as much as youve got to do i really think a scaler would work really good for removing the amount of mortar you need to .
The watermill is looking so good, it won’t be long until you start putting furniture in, so exciting. Hope you had a wonderful break Brittany. Drew you are doing a really good job on the stones and they are looking good already. ‘Life by living’ RUclips channel is about a couple with a property also in Portugal and they are renovating a stone house, so you could check their methods, the walls look so much better once all the old mortar/concrete is removed and new pointing done. Good luck with it x
Yes, Rickie and Victoria have been doing a great job pointing their stone house. Maybe get a Rickie to come over and give you a tutorial. The couple on MAKE DO GROW are also great.
Already been mentioned and it's probably too late now but watch Camper Vibe in Ireland on how to prepare for repointing stone walls. Also the Indie Projects doing their first old barn renovation in Portugal. There are others as have been mentioned. Don't think you can leave the old mortar in. They all cleaned it out thoroughly and then repointed. It's a lot of work! The mill is really taking shape and looking good. Well done. The workers you have are great guys. ❤
Lime would be the thing to use to repoint the inside of your walls with. It is however quite a specialist substance to work with. Lime allows the wall to breath properly, whereas, cement would seal in the water.
Watched Bee and Theo through their complete redoing in stone inside and out. My arms are tired. Lit candle for your young energy. Hope you feel the great respect for all the rocks and veins you are lovingly working over. Sandwiches 3 x a day is a good menu for busy hands. .
OR, TAPE A PLASTIC SHEET TO DOORWAY- KEEP CONTAINED TO CERTAIN AREA! All will need to be dusted before painting. Maybe just hand spray water on section before removing the crumble. Either way, a messy situation.
Well done, what a brilliant job there, didn’t envy you doing it but so rewarding as it looks fabulous as will your home when completed. It’s looking unbelievable.
Get an air compressor and air clean the stone walls by blowing them. Maybe hook up a strong vacuum cleaner that will suck the blown air back in at the same time. In fact, tape the vacuum nozzle to the air nozzle and have at it.
The translation for squirrel in german is „Eichhörnchen“ - in austrian accent is “Oachkatzl”. One of the most popular words we teach any foreigners because it is hard to pronunce for the most germans. By the way "Eich-hörnchen" you could translate to oak - horn. The austrian version you could translate to oak - cat. Thank you for sharing your journey 😉
Try wrapping the fan w/tarp like a tube then face outer end to barrel of water so you have less dust and easier cleanup less breathing in dust you don't know what's in dust then can use to make walkway form and use wet dust as filling for walkway tile or stone.
My hubby has done his and he cleared his out with a lg screwdriver and wire brushes, No grinder just persevere. Go in with a chizel if you have to but sweeping it won't do. Good luck x
Hey Drew. You should see how dusty my recliner is now and the screen on my tablet. Though the dust I’m can see you’re doing a super job. When you get a chance fly to Texas and help me clean up thins here. The homestead is going to be Awesome. ❤❤😊😊😊
The house is looking good. I forgot how many bedrooms it will be. The finish with the rock walls is looking refreshed to this era. Soon it will be a home and lived in. I am impressed how you thought through the land to avoid flooding and structural improvements.
How exciting to have two episodes 😀 for two weeks. Can't wait 😊👏 looking good, coming along! Thank you Drew and Brittany for sharing 🤗❤😊 sending love ❤
Good idea for future show, you do seem to find the most amazing crews. My farmhouse basement does have interior limed walls but now falling off due to excessive rains of past years. (house here since 1934 , but lasted for 90 years ! ) That in itself seems amazing.
Great job Drew! You really put in a lot of hard work to make your watermill look positively awesome. Love those rocks and how they turn a different shade of beautiful colors❤❤
Hello from Tucson Arizona! New subscriber. Something I use for coating / painting stucco (and drywall) surfaces is mix a box of mud with a gallon of paint after it's rolled on with a long nap roller the paint comes to the surface and you get two for one with a little texture. You have some really talented helpers there, I just had a wall covered with stone and I know how hard it can be. After cleaning and finishing a rock wall I use a clear Saltillo tile sealer (spray on) . This stabilizes any loose stones and makes cleaning with a vacuum much faster and more thorough. I use a dry pressurized media system with walnut shells to clean rock walls. The cleanup is fast and easy and no water is used. The walnut shells are not super aggressive and you can adjust the pressure. I don't know if you can order from harbor freight there but a dry media sprayers should be available. Very good job!
Plaster is not water soluble once it sets. I’ve sprayed plaster walls with glue solvents when removing wallpaper, scrubbed them with scotch-brite pads and then rinsed with water. The scotch-brite would remove some plaster so had to be careful, but plaster is fairly robust once set.
At first I didn’t know what it would be like but now I can it’s going to look great love the stone walls I’m so pleased for you both the making of a beautiful home xx🤗
You should contact Indie Projects- they scraped and pointed the stone walls on an abandoned barn. Take a view of their videos- I think it was in 2020 or 2021 when they did that. They are in Portugal, too.
Good morning guys. Every week is such an epic transformation of the property. I've been following you since van life actually for probably about 6 years now. I found you through Bob Wells most people do find people in the nomadic community through him. But I have to tell you this transformation this property is very special. And you have very special people working on it with you. Including Andy when he is absolutely my favorite. Okay have a great day and look forward to the next one Namaste😊
Here in Australia, we call the "drywall" plaster & the trim is called cornice. We can get different shapes which is probably the same or similar worldwide. I really love your content, something different which makes your channel unique.
Perhaps you can check how "Raising voyagers" have done with their stone house in Italy. I mean, how they fixed the stone walls inside the house. I think they made it really beautiful.
Oh my goodness😮😮😮 I did not know that you have asthma Britany😢 My mother had it and so does my brother. In fact, he almost died from it several years ago. He smoked at the time but no more. My granddaughter also has it. Asthma is nothing to take lightly!!!! Drew, thank you sssooo much for doing that work so that Britany can stay safe❤❤❤❤❤ Take care🎉🎉
Drew big job & that stone work takes a lot of patience & TIME!! Have you watched other people who have converted old ruins & pointing with special mixes? Theo from Indie Projects did incredible job on tiny house in Portugal? 💙
White ceilings, corner molding, cleaned stone work and pointing. Use a spay can/bottle or a large sponge to wash out the scrubbed stones and pointwork.
I can’t believe how close you are to finishing up and I know it’s dusty and can’t believe all of the dust comes from Le rock but they’re going to be beautiful and really make a statement in your home. Thank you for sharing. You are just so energetic, but are you going to have Christmas trees? Do y’all celebrate Christmas And what do you do for it? Are you going home or staying here? It’s only 2 1/2 weeks of Christmas so you may have already filmed everything we’re going to see, but I just want to give you Christmas blessings and hope that your holidays bring you all the joy and happiness that you deserve and I love. I can’t wait😊 For your home to be finished each room is fantastic. I know you can’t wait for it to be finished too. ❤️
Yes, we celebrate Christmas 🎄 just like everyone else here in Portugal. You will enjoy the episode we go to see a local Christmas market and festive lights. ❤️💚
Good morning looks like everything is coming together have a great day and say hi to the animals and all the little kitties out there all right God bless you
Great job on a really rough project Drew! And your egg sandwich looked scrumptious! Hope you had a nice trip to Florida Brittany. Love from Mary in SoOC💗
Being a Vet, I learn about cooking. Even when I had a wife around and enjoyed cooking. Sad thing I lose my wife and I found that don't cook as much I had before. Seasonal food like my 20 bean chilly which everyone loves. But I slowed down making it and I also noticed that I cook only fast and easy meals. For lunch most of the time is onion or egg sandwich.
2 episodes per week for the next 2 weeks on Thursday and Sunday! Hope you enjoy this one and know that we ❤️ you!! Xx Mr and Mrs A
Smart to buy a pool like you did for the hot summer months!! 🌞🏊🏽♀🏊🏽♀
Yes I can't wait 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Oh goody! An early Christmas! 😊
Que bom!!! ❤ How are the Portuguese classes coming along?
Have you thought about an outside kitchen? U have a nice covered porch and deck. Your water is also outside…. Just a thought

That bottle is a decanter.
@@lkn4jolly Agree with this comment. Generally you only want to save stone walls that were initially built with good quality, pretty limestones, etc.
I watch all of those too😂
@@connieperkins5135 do you also watch the Perkin Brothers?
Your home has so much character, It's going to be so beautiful once completed. Truly one of a kind. How awesome is that. ❤
I follow one family in Italy doing the same, renovating a Stone house. and they use a pressure washer the first for clean all the dust. Was spectacular results.
Is it Raising Voyagers? I'm watching them, too, and you're right, the stone walls became amazing!
Yes but they cant pressure wash after all the plaster work has been done. Should have been the first job.
Drew - It’s best to apply the acid to the rock faces to remove the cement/lime film. I would hold off the joints and just use the wire brush or use a sand blaster to erode the junk out. Yes, Theo's pointing is amazing!
Camper Vibe watch for how they’re doing their stone walls in their Irish Cabin - great info. Fabulous work on the water mill.
It's really starting to look like a home. HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY The adjustment to the huge space will be something after the van.
Theo did the pointing in the barn ruin. he did an amazing job with the stone walls
You need Theo and Bee to come visit. They can show you how to clean and repoint your walls. Theo is an expert on how to chisel and point. I'm pretty sure he used lime to point with.

you must repoint b4 sealing. looks sooooooo good drew.
Drew, you are such a trooper and you seem to be doing all that tough stone cleaning with no complaints!
You two are so sweet together, very lovely. 😊
Wow, it's coming together, looking great 👍 ❤ what an adventure. Protect your lungs...
Adding, I've seen squirrels in Alentejo near Montemor-novo, one of these days maybe they'll reach the Algarve.
Take away the eucalyptus and gradually replace with native trees. Big syntropy magic will happen.

I knew you guys were gonna do something special about the stone but bringing all the original stone out is so perfect!
Your house is looking gorgeous!!! One day you will appreciate all of your hard work.
Drew! You’re such a hard worker! I wanted to cough the entire time I watched you cleaning those interior rocks. Lordy! The homes is looking nicer and nicer.
Great job with rock cleaning, and such hard work is admired. I hope Brittney enjoyed her time in Florida. I love the kitties ❣️🐈❣️🐈❣️🐈❣️

Painting ceilings is difficult. They are doing such a good job.
Check out the Indie Project guys. They worked a lot on their stone barn and repointed and lime plastered their walls.

Stone walls sublime..gonna be tons of work but so worth it OXOXOOXOXO

To remove that old mortar id buy a tool called a scaler, its run by a air compresser and vibrates to remove welding slang and flux off of welds after welding. Lime would be the thing to use to repoint the inside of your walls with.
It is however quite a specialist substance to work with.
Lime allows the wall to breath properly, whereas, cement would seal in the water.

Would a shop vac help keep the dust down
OR, TAPE A PLASTIC SHEET TO DOORWAY- KEEP CONTAINED TO CERTAIN AREA!
All will need to be dusted before painting. Maybe just hand spray water on section before removing the crumble.

This is your slice of heaven on earth.... 😊 its going to be so beautiful , I love the stone❤🏡

You have to pressure wash it and fill the gaps with the small stones and mortar. Seek Raising voyagers to see the difference.
It is coming out great.
Teamwork makes the dream work. Super team ❤

Perhaps you can check how "Raising voyagers" have done with their stone house in Italy. I mean, how they fixed the stone walls inside the house. I think they made it really beautiful.
Just seal it.....looks gorgeous...worth the effort, Drew......
You should sandblasting the stonewalls. Easy and fast and fantastic outcome ❤❤
Talk to your friends at the Indie Projects about pointing! Theo is awesome at it.
I was going to say that. Theo is the master.
Can also try a nylon brush on the stone. They make them to go on an angle grinder.
You guysI know I gave said it before, but the mermaid is just perfect! So beautiful atop your water mill😊
Your parents are priceless
I can’t wait😊
For your home to be finished each room is fantastic. I know you can’t wait for it to be finished too. ❤️
Yes, we celebrate Christmas 🎄 just like everyone else here in Portugal. You will enjoy the episode we go to see a local Christmas market and festive lights. ❤️💚

Your mill home will be amazing when done. I might try a needler rust remover tool on stone walls. Is a pneumatic tools that vibrates nail size needles

Painting the ceilings really shows off the interesting angles.😊

Awww my few minutes of joy on Sunday❤️❤️❤️
Great job on a really rough project Drew! And your egg sandwich looked scrumptious!
Hope you had a nice trip to Florida Brittany.
Love from Mary in SoOC💗
Being a Vet, I learn about cooking. Even when I had a wife around and enjoyed cooking.
Sad thing I lose my wife and I found that don't cook as much I had before. Seasonal food like my 20 bean chilly which everyone loves. But I slowed down making it and I also noticed that I cook only fast and easy meals. For lunch most of the time is onion or egg sandwich.
How far away are Theo and Bee from The Indie Project? He did an amazing job of cleaning and pointing an entire small, stone house -- it's perfect!
The water mill is looking great
Life By Living in Portugal has also just done a heap of concrete mortar removal. Look 'em up!
