Everyone loves the look of the #vanlife feed on Instagram, but how easy is it to create your own campervan conversion?

I'm curious about drilling the wood into the wall. Is the body of the vehicle like two metal layers, meaning the screws don't penetrate through to the outside of the vehicle?
Might seem obvious, but worth the ask as I want to do a build like this soon.
Indeed two layer to the metal so it doesn’t go through to the outside shell, however this can depend on where you’re drilling!
Is it just me or when he says "Instagram worthy van build" it feels wrong? like its supposed to be a tiny house not just something to show off on Instagram imo
Hahaha yeah it was more due to the fact it seems everyone’s building one for the ‘Gram and I decided to target that group! 😜

I had a gas stove installed in one of the back drawers which worked really well - didn’t like the idea of cooking inside!

Worked really nicely - especially on the short wheelbase. I'm 6 foot and could sleep fully stretched out! I've no idea how people sleep sideways in some of the builds you see!

I slept length ways (I’m 6 foot!) and the bed had a pull out section to make it full length 🤙
How did you get those vinyl stick on wood plank things to not fall off as soon as it got too hot in there? I’m just wondering if there was something you did because by trade I’m a floor layer and those stick down things are pretty crap on the floor let alone upside down. And wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
So…a few months after I filmed this I had this exact issue!haha! We used contact adhesive on the vinyl panels as well and actually it was the adhesive panel on the vinyl that peeled off completely! In the end I replaced the whole ceiling with a wooden panel instead 🤙

I don't get it, the bed is too short?
Wasn’t enough width for me to lay flat so we did a bed that could be extended at night and slid back under during the day 😊

Thanks Kevin! To be honest at the time there were heaps around, I’d seen some epic conversions in a few and after speaking to my mechanic he agreed they were a solid base, with heaps of good value spare parts if needed 😊
I’d certainly choose one again, however I would opt for a hitop version 🤙
Nice build! Whats the length of the van? Or even the length of the "build" area?
Hi Miguel, stoked you like the build! It’s a short wheel base HiAce but not sure of the exact dimension in the back, perhaps around 3m? I’m 185cm and could lay flat in the bed once it was pulled out!
Awesome conversion and video. Nice and simple with not too much that isn't needed (kitchen etc). Just wondering how much you paid for the conversion labour and parts and if your mate can be contracted for a job in Aus? I don't have the handy skills to do the work and want something custom created that will last the test of time. Did you also travel in summer or winter and is it warm enough for Southern Australian state winters?

I’m about to chuck in my walls and bed but I am stumped in regards to the walls.
Other builds show vertical beams installed first but I want to do it this way. Plywood straight onto the walls.
Any advice would be appreciated by anyone with success/ experience.
I’m not planning massive cabinets on the walls so I should be alright, right?

Hey Matty - stoked to hear about your build! I just did a basic insulation and then screwed plywood directly onto the frame and it was no worries, just make sure you use some solid screws!
The main bed frame and cabinet were then screwed into that and the floor and had no issues at all.
Didn’t have any cabinets on the walls but I assumed that would also be ok if done correctly! 🤙

Although there are tonnes of van build vids, only a couple have sat right with my desire and the bed/ wall thing has been such a stalled section. I’m creative but I needed to see how it can be done in one of our curvy as F Hiace’s.
I’ve got heaps of Tek screws but they’ll be messy & big.
I’m thinking either pre-drill or use specific self tapping neat screws.
So, thanks man. I feel confident and maybe I’ll finally compile my video footage and you’ll be able to see some of your influence in my vids, with a shout out of course haha.

@@chaoticature no worries - happy to help! With the ply the key was to make sure it's thick enough to screw other stuff onto and provide insulation, but not too thick that it couldn't be bent/fitted to the curvature of the internal frame of the van. I can't fully remember which screw type we used but havea feeling it was a metal screw. Might be worth hitting up a carpenter to make sure you get the right one. Let me know when your video it up - keen to see how you get on!

I’ve got plenty of 7mm ply that I originally intended for the floor. (Glad I caught that one early), Now it’s gonna be the walls & cabinet.

For sure, always good to see how other people are laying out stuff and what materials they’re building with. I did heaps of research before getting started too so I know the dilemmas and decisions! Putting together a mini series on my van build now too so I’ll make sure there’s plenty of material breakdowns!

Hello, quick question. You say you used 12mm ply on your walls and I watched your builder push it into place. Which has a nice curve in it. I tried this on the same van and couldn't get it anywhere close to the shape of the van wall?

Hey Steve, to be honest, not entirely sure 🤣 he did screw it in along certain points though. Sorry I can’t be more help on that!
When you buy your ply buy the sheet that will flex doesn't need to be thick for the walls.
idk if you sorted it out but look up vids of people building skate ramps

Gas cooker was off of the back and bathroom wise public bathrooms/campsite bathrooms 😊
Toyota hiace most reliable van ever from 2000 to 2006 models old black top engines after 2006 it’s the d4d engine and to much electrics

So is your bed side-to-side (instead of front to back)? I was looking at the dimensions of a Hiace as I'm considering getting one, but it looked too small to put a side-to-side bed...
Hey Michelle, I actually did the bed so the full length pulled out at night and even at 6 foot tall I could lay stretched out 😊 definitely too small to do side to side bed / I have no clue how anyone does that in any van 🤣
@@StokedForTravel New Hiace is 1800mm wide, can fit a 1750 long mattress in east-west config. East-west looks like a great set-up for shorter people, wins back heaps of floor space up front. Move up to larger vans and Ducato is 192cm, Transit and Sprinter 177cm.

Stoked you like it! Originally it was 6 I think - 3 in the front and then we removed the 3 seats in the back 🤙

Did you drill the ply straight into the floor? Or insulate first?
hey Paddy - we lined it with that thin foil style insulation first (as with the rest of the van) but yeah after that it was drilled straight in for the floor :) thinking of doing a conversion yourself?
@@StokedForTravel thanks! I've just gutted my hiace commuter 98. About to put the sound deadening on the floor, tossing up how I'll go about attaching the ply to the floor from there. And if I should just drill my tongue and groove straight into the wall or into some timber supports
Paddy O'Brien we drilled both straight in (using those special metal screws you can buy) and it worked perfectly. Doing the cardboard templates is something I’d highly recommend though, made everything way easier!
I can't learn how you actually doing it or doing the measures so it doesn't help me learn how to convert mine

How do you get on with free camping on the east coast?
My first trip I did a lot of free camping and it was pretty achievable outside of major towns and destinations, but the most recent trip we opted for the creature comforts of full campsites 🤙
@@StokedForTravel thanks for the reply, it turned out really well. One thing I'll mention is solar controllers should be located close to the battery, it's not a great amount but if you're fighting for power it will help reduce losses in the dc cable. Also it keeps it out of the weather. Cheers stormer.
@@stormer6364 stoked to hear your conversion went well! Yeah i housed all the solar invertor and stuff in the same areas as the second battery, so that's an awesome tip!
@@StokedForTravel in the video it shows he put the solar controller on the underside of the solar panel, it is better off nearer to the battery. And I was saying your conversion looks great. I've just purchased mine, it's a little smaller, a Toyota townace , so it has its own set of challenges, but hopefully can make it work.. Best Regards
