- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Robin HIlton | April 28, 2021
Watch this stunning "home" Tiny Desk performance from Son Lux and you might conclude the band members live together in an all-white universe without walls or boundaries. But it's all an illusion. In fact, guitarist Rafiq Bhatia, drummer Ian Chang and singer-keyboardist Ryan Lott, who started Son Lux as a solo project back in 2008, each shot their own, separate video with their iPhones, at different times, at their homes scattered across different states. So did the guest vocalists, Nina Moffitt and Kiah Victoria. Editor Evan Chapman then stitched all the videos together.
The effect is dizzying and sometimes disorienting as superimposed images flicker and warble over one another against Bhatia's skittering guitar lines. Everything is bent and a little off - intentionally, not because of the production challenges - and nothing sounds quite like you expect it to. Watch Bhatia's all-too-short solo on "Only" or Lott as he walks his fingers over the keys near the beginning of "Vacancy." Together - and alone - they've perfectly captured the upside-down world we've been living in this past year, where the lines between what's real and imagined are blurred, all sense of place fades into the ether and the normally predictable rhythms of life come undone.
The setlist for this performance includes a song from each of the band's last three albums, a trilogy released over the past eight months, called Tomorrows I, II and III.

Thank you, NPR and friends, for inviting us back to play for you and to create our own unique Tiny Desk experience. 🖤
🖤🎧
I appreciate being able to listen.
Very interesting chill👌🍁
Awesome stuff! Caught you guys live in Montreal a few years ago, small venue (Fairmont), AMAZING performance!
You guys never disappoint
Great job! Any advice on how to obtain that wonderful drum sound?
For all the new Ian Chang (drummer) fans out there, he also plays a killer set with the band Landlady in their Tiny Desk. Worth checking out
Also check Belonging - Ian Chang, and Adult Baby - KAZU, there he plays with Kazu Makino.
totally agree!
everything that dude touches is gold
Appreciate the love!! For a real throwback, check out father figures’ tiny desk. That video helped convince Ryan to invite me on the Lanterns tour.
He shines on this to me.His skills stand out over everything but it's all good music.
Can we give this band and these albums all the Grammy’s please.
The home concerts feel a lot more like music videos than the raw feeling tiny desk gives.
Sun lux was absolutely incredible in this
to me the coolest thing about son lux is that rafiq the guitarist, ian the drummer, and ryan the vocalist/keys all have their unique sound that you can hear and easily pick out in their solo and other projects. and yet in son lux they combine it so well.
0:00 - *Prophecy*

10:06 - *Vacancy*

Just in Time
I´m here for Ian Chang, THE drummer
Step 1: Plug high -end headphones
Step 2: Press play
Step 3: Transcend into the space-time continuum
This version of Vacancy is an absolute masterpiece.
I think about this often. All of it: the sound, mix, melodies, videography/editing. I love it.
I've watched many times and will continue to do so
Only 42,830 views come on!!! This is Dope …so far the best session this year..Eventho listening for the 1st time this group..they absolutely deserve more attention
oh to lay on the floor and listen to this with closed eyes
lie on the floor*
Some things still don’t disappoint like the amazing musicianship of Son Lux and the sound of a SM57 on a snare. ✨🔥
I hate to break it to you but this is probably a 545. And I also spotted a Coles 4038 ribbon mic overhead which also contributes to the amazing (snare) drum sound here.
Holy Moly thats the kind of music i needed but didnt know that i need it.
Doing the best you can with what you have! Sometimes tiny desk may need a break this doesn’t feel like a break... just feels different thank you tiny desk and thank you son lux.
This is one of the most original Tiny Desks I've heard. Nicely done! I really enjoyed it.
Great mixing and video editing too.
Drummer is an absolute UNIT.
Love Son Lux! This is magnificent.
Listening at x2 makes Son Lux sound like a new style of pop.
What a beautiful performance. Wow. Everything about this is great. The instrumentals, the vocals, the editing. Everything is just perfect.
this is absolutely incredible. Son Lux... Time and time again. You bring me to a place of awe, fascination and a holy introspection. The best lyricist I know of.
The beauty... I got into Son Lux from his collaborative project with Sufjan Stevens (Sysiphus), and since then, got hooked. These guys live in a parallel dimension when only pure musical poetry is allowed. Not sure they’d be fun at parties, but they surely make our own, limited, frustrating, boring and frightful dimension a better place.
remember those remixes? beirut (a sunday smile), my brightest diamond, and i think a sufjan one too. this was almost 20 years ago. on his friggin myspace.
Wowwww Kiah Victoria looks so gorgeous here 💖💖💖
Artists!
Feels sad but sounds good 🍷
The Asian dude on the drums is a whole vibe Man, Lol man is lost in his own world feeling the music, my guy is using a Timpani Mallet with a regular drum stick, going live
His name is Ian Chang
@@stellasolas and he’s amazing
Ok I'll keep his name in mind
I saw him open for Sylvan Esso in Toronto back in 2019; check out his solo project Spiritual Leader!
Ian Chang if a God
this drums are so sick
in a good or bad way?
Can I just say, this is what music is about, creative sounds, unique!
masterpiece. top notch musicianship
THEY'RE HERE YES
to yall complaining that this isn't like a "tiny desk" -- ever considered the fact that they live in different places and had to film this separately?
This feels more like a music video than tiny desk.
Hi Josh! I think I know you and had coffee with you this morning :) I agree with your comment, but also, let me notice that it's a nice recording.
and I doesn't seemto be any kind of "live" recording or concert.
Totally agree.
@@pajacclown yeah nice recording but these are suppose to feel live and intimate, this just felt like every other music video I've seen. Don't get me wrong good music just wish they stuck with the regular format.
2x1
Yeesss, been waitig for this one. So much love for this band❤️❤️
Clearest evidence yet that Son Lux *must* be considered a bona fide trio, and still the songs manage, amazingly, to be even more /Ryan/ somehow.
waited waaaay to long for this one. and it is as astonishing as i thought. amazing work!
he is awesome
No clue who they are but I stumbled on this. The drummer is crazy with the style and skills. The music all together is good no doubt but the drummer shines.
The keys and melodies played are luring, great show, thank you 🔥
Just beautiful
This is love, forever! Thank you for the emotions!
Omg thanks son lux!! Thanks for this,
There was a vacancy in music and then came Son Lux!
Yeah well this was amazing. What an awesome way to start the day. Always grateful for NPR
Yesss son lux!!!!
I love this drummer. His style when he plays Prophecy is oddly satisfying to listen to. Remind's me of Devil's Pie by D'angelo
Yessssssssss "this moment changes everything" ❤❤❤❤❤❤

So proud of this one!! Congrats all!!

Son Lux is an aesthetic experience 🙌
So refreshing
How on earth did you make a perfect thing even more perfect. That's not supposed to be a thing.
This music rolled over me and I didn't know what was happening. Just so beautiful. Thank you so much!
Now, the appearance of this video is what I would call SOME LUCK
PURE ART
Thank you very much!
🤟❤️🙏
Oh wow this came on auto play, how beautiful and unique
I haven’t been able to catch them live yet so this Tiny Desk really showed off their artistry in a way I haven’t seen yet. I loved every second
Check out their “Live from Lincoln Hall” stuff. All professionally recorded and shot. I personally think it’s some of their best work.
You also need to check out their live stuff with Woodkid. There’s a video of them playing “Easy” with Woodkid, accompanied by an orchestra, and its fantastic.
One of the most stunning performance music and visually tiny desk I saw ever. 🙇♂️🌑🎱🕳🖤🖤🖤🖤
I was blessed with opportunity o listen Son Lux in Lithuania, at LOFTAS back then and I loved it so much (of course I loved it before too:)). Thank you for this beautiful concert xoxo
This could be the next soundtrack to a evil Edward Scissor Hands 2.0 lol
Trippy stuff. Amazing thank you. Be well and stay safe.
Can’t wait to see them live again but this will have to do for now.
AMAZING!!! 💖💖💖
Ich komm immer wieder zurück... genial ist einfach der kaputte mit dem engelsgleichen Sound, i love it

Amazing! Also: shout out to an awesome editing job
What a novel approach to a groove. I'm not yet sure I like it, but I wholly applaud the effort.
Ok, everything is insanely good but can we talk about the amazing backing-vocals???
It's beautiful, but unsettling like the sight of violence. I can't stop watching!
