- The training pathway of a doctor in the UK may seem confusing initially, but Dr. Ibrahim Ivan (Internal Medicine Trainee) has broken down what the person specifications of specialty training in the UK look like, along with the entry and selection criteria for international medical graduates and UK graduates alike in order to proceed with training.
Wondering about what the most competitive specialty is in the UK or how best you can proceed relies heavily on your ability and competency to progress.
Chapters:
00:00 Introduction to the lesson and learning objectives
01:02 Foundation, core, specialty specific competencies
02:05 How to prove your competencies
03:37 How to find what competencies to achieve

Best video to clear my confusions
☺️
This lockdown and COVID thing has made me watch your almost all videos and go through your blog as well. I just want to ask you and i want you to answer this with heart.
“Are you happy being in UK practicing as a doctor rather than being in your own country Bangladesh?”
Coz i am a final year student In Nepal and i feel like UK has got lots of things to offer.
Most definitely ☺️
Awesome sir/ma'am
Thanks :)
I could not find the alternative core competencies form for Otolaryngology for the current year. There is one available from 2018 but not 2020/2021.
Called the responsible deanery. They said just the CREST form is sufficient.
Hey Ibrahim! Thanks so much for your series of super informative videos with Ibreez! Just wondering, you know when they say minimum 12 months or 24 months of clinical experience post internship, do you have any idea if they mean by deadline? Or at time of application? Thanks so much!
For training posts? Typically by the starting date of the post.
If i am applyinv for st1 what would be competencies i need to join
Hi Great video and thank you both of you for the guidance. Can I know where can I find the number of SLE's and WBA's to evidence for internal medicine core competency?
In the internal medicine curriculum.
Assalam-o-Alaikum....You are doing really great for IMGs....I just wanna know that after completing MRCP how long it will take to get FRCP in general medicine?
Hi thanks once again for the great video. Just wanted to know how difficult is it for an IMG to clear MRCP when u are not a medicine resident or specialist in ur country (like I am MD dermatology & not read medicine since last 4 or 5 yrs.). Any tips from ur side wud be greatly helpful😊🙏
It's subjective but we have no reason to believe that if you prepare for it you would not succeed.
For ST1 Training posts, is it absolutely essential for applicants, including IMG doctors, to have one full year of NHS experience before application for said training post, or will a CREST form be sufficient irrespective of how long one has spent in a Non-Training post achieving core competencies?
TIA
Crest is sufficient.
Can the forms (CREST, Alternative Training Competences Certificate) be signed by a non-UK consultant doctor in a country where IMG has undergone his/her medical training?
Yes if they meet the consultant criteria as outlined on the CREST form.
The crest is needed to get in a ST3 level so there is nothing needed between the FY2 and ST1?
CREST is needed for core level, not specialty.
Can I get the Alternative core competencies certificate signed by my supervisor from my home country(India)? In my case, that would be for psychiatry. I’ve seen the form and my training here satisfies all the core competencies mentioned in the certificate.
If the criteria is met and they are eligible to sign it, it should be fine.
Dear doctor, thank you for very clear and detailed video. My situation is a bit tricky. I aim to apply for CST in August2025. My UK surgical job (I will have a total of 18 months experience) will end in April 2025 and I will move to a medical one . Will I be eligible for CST?
Without mrcp can i join st4 level training i.e higher specality ?????.. please reply...
No.
Alternative certificate of competencies or CREST form only has to be singned by consultants working within UK?
They must hold GMC registration.
If i complete MRCPCH( without plab) and can't show CREST certificate then from which level i will start my career in UK?...ST1 or FY2? Do i need to seat for MSRA?
