    Learned about these from the Diskworld book series. Wild when I found out they were real. Even more wild when I learned it provided the first example of a "man-in-the-middle" attack.
    Also, that "What Hath God Wrought?" image over the telegraph line would make for a great internet reaction image.

    It’s fascinating how the Chappe Telegraph System’s towers revolutionized communication in France. Did you know that in chess, the ‘tower’ is actually called a rook? It’s the piece that moves in straight lines, much like how messages traveled across France’s telegraph towers.
