The long-forgotten history of the French Telegraph
Between 1794 and 1850 France was the fastest country on earth.
Sending a message between cities took minutes not days and it was thanks to the Chappe Telegraph System. This optical telegraph network spanned hundreds of miles and included hundreds of towers connecting the entire country.
Today, only a few of these towers remain.

The capital of Belgium has a long history of grand projects and big changes. Before it was one of the capitals of the European Union, it underwent a dramatic reconstruction. Part of it tied to a brutal colonial empire. After the 50s, Brussels saw the arrival of European officials and a noticeable demographic change leading to the term 'Brusselization.' Its history and the people behind it have ...

Why Paris Tore Down a Highway to Build a Tram
Просмотров 114 тыс.9 месяцев назад
www.patreon.com/SensatoVideos Paris is going all in on its urban revolution. Over the last decade, it's added hundreds of miles of bike lanes, expanded its bus lanes, replaced parking with trees, pedestrianized its streets, and, to top it all off, tore down a useless highway to make way for an expansion of the T1 Tramway. Since the 1980s France has been building tramway systems in cities big an...

Oslo deserves a lot of praise for its progress in recent years to make its streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The city has turned much of its downtown (Sentrum, Oslo) into a car-free area. Its harbor is undergoing a massive redevelopment (Oslo Fjord City) which includes new housing, businesses, and public space along with burying a highway. Oslo’s urban history follows many of the same...

This downtown, elevated, driverless transportation system is one of the few examples of an Automated People Mover built in the US with support from the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (the others being Miami’s Metromover and the Detroit People Mover). Like most transportation sy...
