    Rose Theater
In 2014, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra music director Wynton Marsalis and drummer Ali Jackson presented the compositions of a pair of Philadelphia-born, post-Boomer virtuosos -- bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel -- who joined the JLCO for the occasion. On this track, McBride plays bass behind an arrangement of Freddie Hubbard's classic composition, "Thermo."

Thermo! Freddie Hubbard wrote great tune when he was 22. He did a big band version of it on his _The Body and The Soul_ album in 1963, and performed a truly kick-ass solo.

It seems to me.that he was struggling a little bit, but manage to put a lot of soul on the solo and that sells it to me.

Too slow, too smooth and no fire. Guys like Freddie Hubbard and Art Blakey were unbelievable. Pure passion.
