We had the same issue with our 2012 outback. After 3 hours of labor at the shop they finally found that the main fill hose has an inner hose. While the outer hose looked fine. Once they removed it they found that the inner hose had collapsed. Hopefully this info can help someone not spend money for 3 hours of labor at the shop.
I had the same problem with putting gas in my 2007 Forester. Two shops told me that they would have to drop the tank because the problem was at the top of the tank. Took it to another shop, and they found the problem. The hose that sits inside the main fill hose had collapsed. No more problems with filling it up. Hope this helps someone.
What an annoying problem ehh? I dropped the tank and replaced the vent valve as well as inspected every hose. Haha got everything reinstalled and the problem was still there. Checked the canister again and ended up replacing it. Problem solved… hahahaha!
Yea it ended up being my canister too. Turns out blowing air through it is not an accurate way to test it. I ended up pulling the vent hose from the tank to the canister off an it filled up as it is supposed to. Thanks for watching and also for engaging. I appreciate it.
@@samaelmartinus3273 It's good to remember eye protection! Not terribly difficult to remove. The hose clamps were probably the most aggravating part and those weren't bad.

@@kevinsmith6oh6 yea, the big black box thing is called a charcoal canister. It helps filter displaced air from your gas tank before venting to the atmosphere.
I am double checking all of the hoses. There are a couple that were tucked way up that I did not make it to, so I still have to check those. I want to make sure before I order this valve or any other part.
I have already replaced the charcoal canister and it have not fixed the problem on my 2004 Subaru forester xt I almost never let it go under half a tank bc of how long it takes to fill up
Ok. Hmmm there is a way to fill up regularly. Next time during fill up pull the hose off running from the gas tank vent valve into canister . It’s the middle one. Be sure to put it back on when finished. I just leave the clamp loose.
Good day Isaac! Yes I did find the issue. It turned out to be a faulty charcoal canister. However, I have not replaced it. Instead I disconnect the hose from the fuel vent at the canister during fill up. If you have not done any diagnosis yet I would definitely try this first. Thanks for watching and engaging. I hope you solve your issue soon.
Have a 04 forester, the fuel gauge takes long to register the quantity and shows full while the actual quantity is less. What could be the problem. Any help will be appreciated.
I have the same problem. I was told it's a small evaporation leak at the top of the fuel tank that requires dropping the fuel tank and checking the fuel filter area and the level sensor area. Quoted over $1000 for repair.
I have replaced the solenoid, checked all lines, and dropped the tank to replace the main vent valve and mine still does not fill up correctly. The last piece to change out is the charcoal canister. I have it but have not changed it out yet. I made a video on dropping the tank. If you are wanting to save some coin I would recommend checking it out. It is honestly not that bad. There is also a little trick I have been doing to make it fill up correctly. I pull off the main vent line off , running from the tank, at the canister. Its also labeled "VENT". This allows the tank to vent properly during fill up. After I am finished I put the hose back on. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
@AdrianBilladeau Thanks for the update. Unfortunately, I would not know where to start when pulling off hoses. I am looking for a good mechanic in my area to take it to. I would hate to have to buy another car at this point.

@streemline13 I am pretty sure that I have it figured out now. There is a vent valve on top of the tank that has the reputation of going bad. That is gonna be a crazy video or two because I have to remove the exhaust, drive shaft, rear diff as well as the entire rear subframe assembly. Eww!
