Wow. This was a perfect tutorial. You actually went into the specifics of what causes masking instead of just saying that two sounds "are fighting each other" which is as far as most videos go. Thank you for this.
This is literally the best masking tutorial I have ever seen, particularly in ways to fix the said problem. Thank you so much! This has been the most helpful.
Your mention of Side-chaining at the end made me think of something. Instead of completely destroying a certain problem frequency to make room for a different sound, you could also Side-chain it or even duck it for maximum control. Great video man! Made me think of my mixes in a completely different way!
oh man this might be one of the most valuable videos ive ever seen, if my boy ADSR got sentenced for any heinous and unspeakable crime id still break him outta jail ongodius bo
Very useful video, I've been relying on the ear-only method and I think it's time I start using the analysers to check for frequency clashes. Thanks for the tips!
Hey man. You talk about the SPAN Plugin in your video around 6.20. You say that there is a video about how to program the plugin so that you can listen and see drums, synths etc separately. I can't find it in the playlists.. Do you maybe have a link? Thanks!
Masking have some advantages and disadvantages . For example you can use masking to complement a guitar tone with one overdrive tone doing the rhythmic pattern while a more distorted underneath gluing them together for a massive guitar tone . In this example you looking to still get the rhythmic element of the guitars but still have the aggressiveness and energy that distorted guitars give. But careful is the key on doing that. You first gotta understand and know exactly what you trying to achieve and how to get there before doing it. Another great example is an snare drum that needs that beefy room sound. You put a pitch down sample snare and send it full to a gated reverb so you only get the room sound of that sample snare and mix it with the original snare. You get two things by doing that ...the beef and the big 80's gated snare sound which its still used today believe it or not. Again the key here is careful ..check phase and know what you going for. But the main key to avoid masking is just simple arrangement. If you need to have a lot of instruments then have a clear understanding what instruments really needs to be there at certain instances on the song. I heard a producer (cant remember who was) who once said; " If an instrument is not calling attention, Is not doing anything impressive and needs to be turn down to the point you cant really hear it....Then clearly is not relevant at that point...shut it off" .
why the change to Ableton? issues with Logic? I was thinking on switching to Logic. Let me know if that daw is having issues now, I dont wanna waste my money.
Top of the mornin! I like your video :) At the beginning you align two sine tones and when you shift one slightly you say that this is what causes frequency masking. But in a mix, would you ever have frequencies so close to each other? Usually there is some space between musical notes in the frequency spectrum right? Also one more question please sir: You say the best way to avoid FMasking is to compose so things are in a different frequency range but what happens when you have an acoustic guitar and a vocal. The notes of the vocal are almost always in the chords of the guitar too. So what do you do?

Well done this makes sense.
Any chance you could link to the video where you set SPAN up to use it like this?
Great video! Really really helpful tips. Keep up the good work.

Waiting for the next video where you show how to set this up
Melda has some plugins that make super easy to unmask frequencies.
Which plugin please?
Also, is that the free version of SPAN or the paid version?
SPAN doesn't have a paid version.. only free.
@@dudleydooright Yes it does... Span PLUS.
@@Rhythmattica Sure nuff. Thx!
@@dudleydooright You're welcome....
Best from Down Under.

I can’t believe it’s been three years and no one has answered your question. If you still need the answer let me know.
Side chaining works as well to deal with overlapping clashing fequencies to ones understanding.
Anybody know what that ableton skin is?
Lol it's the mid-dark that comes with the daw, there are no custom skins for Ableton (at least to my knowledge).
@@erikmatkovic7657 Nice one mate never realised, you can get custom ones though I have them
could be disco?
Excellent tutorial!
