    The front seat of the F-14 Tomcat and today the F/A-18 F is a pilot's seat while the rear seater works the radar, arms the missiles and works on getting a missile lock. only the pilot can actually fire the weapons systems as well as fly the aircraft. I flew both the F/A-18 E (single seat) and F models during my time in the Navy.

      @@NewfieMovieReactions Ya basically if the pilot is some how out of commission for some reason the only thing the RIO (as it was known in the 14) or WSO (as the position is known today) can do is punch out.
      One of my friends got branded with the callsign "Punchout" after the seat malfunctioned and blew them out of the cockpit for no reason during a training flight in a 18E. never really lived it down :P but was one hell of a pilot despite the callsign.

      One thing I noticed that probably isn't accurate is when Goose was calling out altitude and fuel indications. I was watching a RUclips video recently on Demi Bagby's channel where there was a F-16 and the rear seat could fly as well as the front.

    • @CDRhammond
      @CDRhammond 2 года назад +1

      @@kd5you1 The F-16 is an air force aircraft I have seen videos where someone in the backseat has control but when it comes to the Navy that will only happen in aircraft used during flight school. The back seater has no control of actual flight in aircraft like the 14 or 18

    Great reaction! 😊
    Love this movie! Definitely one of my favorite movies growing up in the 80s. And one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies.
    All these years later, Goose's death still makes me tear up.
    I really can't wait to see "Top Gun: Maverick".
    Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

  • @CDRhammond

    In regards to rank Goose is a Lieutenant Junior grade (O-2) pilots like Mavrick and Iceman are all Lieutenants (O-3) Jester held the rank of Lieutenant Commander (O-4) and Officers like the ship squadron CO that sent Mavrick and goose to TOPGUN, Viper and the Air boss Mavrick ticked off with that fly by stunt are all Commander's (O-5). When I left the Navy I left as a O-5 myself.
    In TOPGUN: Mavrick Pete Mitchell is at the rank of Captain which is a O-6 while Iceman has reached as high as it gets in the officer ranks at Admiral (O-10).

    There is a similar scene of Maverick riding his motorcycle as the first motorcycle scene in this movie and he's still not wearing a helmet. I don't remember there being helmet laws when this one came out.

    • @theshadowfax239
      @theshadowfax239 2 года назад

      Rule number one in movie making, you don't have your leading man wear a helmet and cover up his face. They paid good money for that face, lol.

    • @cimarronwm9329

      That was one thing in Maverick, no helmets on the motorcycles. In 1986 there was no helmet law in Cakifornia, but there has been since 1992. Just a few years after Gary Buddy's helmetless motorcycle accident.

      @@cimarronwm9329 I'm not in favor of such laws. Let people decide to wear helmets or seat belts and if they don't let natural selection take them out in the event of an accident. I'm in favor of the laws for children but adults should be able to choose.

    Great reaction! During a Dogfight, missiles are designed for medium and short range shots. Fired too close and they may go stupid and miss for not being properly locked on target. Too far, and they may not reach their target due to loss of energy and countermeasures. Guns are a last resort for close range, knife fights. That's why Maverick switch over to guns while chasing Viper

    Ha! See this is very interesting to me. I'm an older dude. 45yrs old, and I grew up on this. I've literally been a fan of this movie since I was a kid, the large majority of my life. I've definitely always felt I identified with old-school sort of mentality, but not so much that I was closed off, and had an open perspective on the modern. They both have their ups and downs, but it was interesting watching your reaction to the You've Lost That Loving Feeling technique. You went with bold and kind of romantic, which I think is pretty in line with what I grew up with. Most of younger women I see respond to this though, might be a little iffie about it, and probably to some extent kind of cringie, and some would be completely embarrassed, or even anxious about that happening to them, if not worse, but we think it's bold and romantic.

    • @NewfieMovieReactions
      @NewfieMovieReactions  2 года назад

      That's how it was back in the day. Before the internet and social media people spent more time out socializing with people. There was less anxiety. It was the thing to do. If you liked someone, you mad sure they knew it. Haha.

    To explain what the hard deck is it's a set altitude that simulates the ground here it was at 10,000 feet so in going below that the only thing Mavrick would have done was swan dive right into the ground. As far as promotions go, for Mavrick the rank of Lieutenant would absolutely have been his last rank achieved because in real life he would be facing prison time as well as separation from service with a OTH or even a possible DH discharge as well as loss of all pay/rank and privileges such as VA healthcare for the things he did in this movie. If it was during a time of war it could be even worse he could even get the death penalty for some of them.

    • @johncollins9989
      @johncollins9989 2 года назад

      ummmm holy shit the death penalty? lol

    • @CDRhammond
      @CDRhammond 2 года назад

      @@johncollins9989 depending on what is done and if it is during a time of war ya it could go that far. comes down to if the government really wanted to push it that far. Is it likely probably not but defiantly possible for some of the things Mavrick pulled in this movie. there is another video where a Lawyer goes over things committed by Mavrick and the special guest was a USMC Major that served as a JAG officer.
      I'm no JAG myself I was a USN aviator like what you see in this movie, but given best outcome I would say that pulling things like what were done in this movie and you're defiantly 100% no doubt losing your wings and never flying again, probably looking at some time in confinement, loss of rank/pay and all benefit's that come with it as well as if you're lucky a OTH discharge.
      In other words, if you're an actual pilot do not do the things wrong that Mavrick did here in this movie, it will cost a pilot big time.

    RIO's (Radar Intercept Officers, i.e. the guy in the back) can't fly the plane. Though they do get 'some' training in flight school, their primary job is to operate weapons and camera systems.
    "The stick in the rear seat cannot fly the aircraft. It is like a mouse for the weapons system. It controls the cursor on the displays and can move the position of the radar and TCS (Television Camera System) and things like that."~Aviation Geeks
    Really, REALLY glad you're watching this one before the new film! I'm NOT a fan of remakes, though I understand 'Maverick' to be a continuation rather than, but the forced infiltration of social agenda into films and TV really lower my options for cinematic entertainment these days. One of the things I'm looking forward to is that Tom Cruise notoriously insists on his films being free from propaganda.
    What a great film this was!
