  • In 1984, "The Debonaires" were the national winners of the True Value Country Music Showdown. The band won $50,000.00 and a recording contract with MTM (Mary Tyler Moore) Records in Nashville, TN. In 1985, MTM Records released a single on "The Debonaires". The song was the Bruce Springsteen ballad, "I'm On Fire". Here is a very rare video of the band performing the song "live" at the (now defunct) S.P.J.S.T. Hall in Round Rock, Texas in 1987.

Correction: It was the Wrangler Country Music Showdown. Past winners had been Sawyer Brown and the Judds...We were with them when they won the preliminary round at the Texas Hall of Fame in Bryan. Then we went to see them blow the competition away in Ft. Worth at Billy Bob's Texas and listened to Roy Gene Munce announce that they had won on the radio live from Nashville..(KORA) We saw the video a few weeks later. I really miss those guys.
