Thanks to you I'll be calling a square dance for school kids tomorrow, while playing my fiddle. Wish me luck. We had a practice last week and we did OK. I couldn't manage the weaving in and out call but everything else worked. No tears were shed. My fiddle playing got pretty primitive while I was talking. -- Many thanks for your clear, musical and good-humored approach.
ktommycary Best of luck to you! I think trying to call a square dance while playing a musical instrument would be difficult. One of the famous callers (I believe it was Joe Lewis) played an accordion while calling. He's the only one I know of. Let me know how it goes. I wish you well. Garland Smith
Garland Smith I guess it went OK, Garland. I forgot half the calls I'd planned to do and it got too dark to read my cheat sheet. We did a lot of promenading, right hand stars and circling to the left but no tears were shed and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I have no idea what I was playing on the fiddle but it had a beat. Darn, I forgot to do the Sutter's Fort yell. Anyway, many thanks. I couldn't have done it without you.
Many thanks, Garland. I really admire the way you are almost singing the moves, great rhythm. I hope to get one of the teachers to do the calling so I can concentrate on the fiddle. I'll let you know how it goes. In the meantime I'm trying to practice a little every day. Thanks again, Keith
Garland, you are such a fine caller. Good cheer, clear and fun. (I've played dances where the callers were so impolite and cheerless) Thank you much. I'm a musician but need to call a 5th grade square dance next month. I think I can do at least the first half of what you did here, if I study this every day. Any advice you want to give me is welcome but this will probably get me started.
Hello Roberta, I believe the music is "G String" on ESP. "Up Jumped the Devil" on Pioneer is a very close rendition. I hope this helps. Thanks, Garland Smith
hi gerland my name is Sierra and I'm 11 years old and I square dance and it's really fun but are collor is Dennis and the other collor I can't remember his name but I square dance with square dancers.
I believe the music is “G String” on ESP. However, it could also be “Up Jumped the Devil” on Pioneer. These two hoedowns are very similar. I hope this helps. Garland Smith
Garland, I enjoyed listening to you and watching this. I would like to teach this to some friends. I am trying to write your call, can you send the words to the call to me? I would appreciate it and be sure to mention this video and your name whent I teach it. Thanks
Hello Ktommycary, My recommendation would be to use good, lively music. The calls don't need to be complicated. You just need to keep the dancers moving. Learning to deliver the calls with correct timing and cadence is important and is something comes with experience. I have gained a lot by listening to other callers that I admire and emulating them. Best of luck to you. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Garland Smith
Hello Danny, Thank you for your comment. I think you'll enjoy the experience. Just let yourself to and savor the experience. You can really go wild with this (in a controlled way, of course). All the best to you, Garland Smith

This can be a lot of fun if you let yourself enjoy it. I hope you can find a way to have fun with it. Just let yourself go and have a blast.

Damn, that’s some low-energy square dancing.

This is a good teaching call. The choice of music is why modern square dancing is disappearing.
Hi
Hi I was just wondering what song is being played in this video?
Two of those individuals are crying on the on the inside and trying to figure out how it all came to this. But cool video.
ok
im gonna fail my fucking PE test
Well you're gonna bow to the partner
Then you bow to your corner
Join hands, circle to the left don't step on her
Circle to the left go round
Everybody run up to the middle and back
Face your partner, Right and left grand
Right, and left and right, and left
Promenade, take a full promenade
Promenade around you go and around the ring
movin' around till you get back home and here we go and then
Let's have the boys star by the right in the middle
Make a right hand star - Right hand star
Look for the corner corner girl
Allemande left with the corner turn her by the left
And a right and left grand
Back to your partner then Right and left and right and left
And then Swing your partner round and round and round you go
Promenade and around you go and you get back home and homeward bound
Promenade and around the ring and you get back home and then
Head couples one and three dance up to the middle and back
Heads go into the middle, join hands, circle to the left
Go round the ring circle to the left, Get back home, Back out at home
Side pair in to the middle join hands circle to the Right
Hey circle to the right till you get back home round the ring and then
Everybody face parter then, Right and left grand
Grand right and left go round the ring, right and left and a ring-a-ding-ding
Promenade around you do like a Chicken in a breadpan pecking out dough,
Granny does your dog bite, No child no and you get back home
All eight to the middle with Texas yell!
Bow to your partner and the corner of the hall
Give yourselves a big hand there
