If your painting has muted colors with a few bright spots, the bright colors will stand out more. I also didn't mention in the video why there are transparent and opaque acrylics. You can use transparent acrylics for glazing, where you paint transparent layers on top of a monochrome underpainting, for example.
You can paint the values, meaning shadows and highlights in black and white (for example) and then glaze colors over it after the black and white layer is dry. Glazing means diluting the paint with water or mediums such as matte medium to make it transparent (or using paint that's already transparent). Then you won't need to think about the values at the coloring stage, because they'll show through the transparent colors.
My paintings are fully shaded and highlighted, but they appear dull. It loses vibrancy & has no build up. I add many layers & it just dries up & takes so many layers to build anything up. Frustrating. What should I add to the paint to thicken it op?
this is very helpful thank you so much. i bought transparent acrylic paints without knowing because i'm a beginner and I followed your advise to mix white to the color and that helped to cover the black color underneath
Add opaque colors similar to the color you are trying to get. Avoid black, unless you are painting with a dark color and don't mind the dull hue. It's easier to use artist grade paints. Also, cheaper canvas needs multiple coats of gesso.
I've found that mixing a bit of cadmium red (or a warm red) with yellow makes a nice, bright orange, whereas crimson red (a cool red) with yellow makes a muddy orange. And a cool red mixed with ultramarine blue makes a bright purple, whereas a warm red with blue makes a muddy purple.
Helga Cobian I just spent 30 minutes trying to create a good purple but it kept coming out muddy dull and dark or plumy. I found out magenta and cool blue make a great purple! :)
I’ve had trouble creating vibrant purple when painting an orchid hybrid with pure white edged petals. I tried all combinations of red and blue as you suggested to no avail.
Have you watched this tutorial on mixing purple: ruclips.net/video/IUc31f0A7CQ/видео.html It's also possible that you might just need to buy a premixed purple of the shade you need.
Could you be using a blue with a red undertone? That might result in a muddy color. Have you seen this video about color bias: ruclips.net/video/jTc727znNkw/видео.html
Tnx for the tips. How should I get a brighter pure white in acrylic. When I paints with white, the color goes dim instead of bright. Especially painting clouds.
If all your acrylics are transparent, I would get a more opaque white one separately. And even with an opaque white, it will probably take more than one coat, if you're painting over a dark color.
I use artist-grade white or even white heavy-body to get a good bright white base. Also you can add several layers of white mixed with glazing medium for depth. Allow each layer to dry. Actually for the gradations of white and other colors that make up your clouds the glazing method works beautifully.
Hi great video! I have a question though, in my art class I’m painting a chicken and the background is sorta like a tree, but blurred and not detailed. However, the background and the chicken have around the same dark colors, and I don’t know how to get my chicken to stand out more and be brighter.
Good tip on opaqueness boosting with minimal effort. I am looking for a brighter white than Titanium White. It just appears about an 85% white compared to modern paper that runs 92-95%. I need to use it to pop signage. Looking for a "bright tip"!!
also, since you can add modeling paste to acrylic, you can also add marble dust. try to find a marble dust that has the brightness you want, to either modify titanium, or to mix your own white into an acrylic medium... you will probably have to apply layers. also try different brands.
Thanks for useful video Can you explain why on some place on canvas paints are applied more and some place light paint applied and seems Matty of canvas.how evenly use paints
You can varnish a finished painting with glossy varnish to make it shiny or you can add some medium during painting. I haven't tried many mediums, but there is such a thing as a gloss medium.
I haven't tried recovering completely dried acrylic paint myself, but here are a couple of links that might help. If it's not completely dry, you can try adding a little bit of water and then more and more. The other option is using paint thinner. www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?302858-Is-There-A-Way-To-Save-My-Dried-Out-Paint www.how-to-draw-and-paint.com/how-to-reactivate-dried-acrylic-paint.html
All these issues is fixed buying quality (studio grade is fine) paint and just get basic knowledge about paints. It will save a lot of headache and frustration.

Glad it helped! I had no idea about transparent and opaque acrylics, when I got my paint sets, either.
These were awesome tips and the video is short and sweet. Awesome content! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips. You address many of the issues I been having.
Glad it was useful, thank you for the comment! 😊
My paint is sooo transparent literally it looks like I just put one layer but I added like 6 layers 😭😭

Priming the canvas with gesso might help. If the canvas is pre-primed, you don't have to prime it yourself, but it might help.
You are so absolutely ASMR goals!
Can we use gesso to make it opaque?
I can't get a sunbeam to look right its still too dark and I added white to it so should I put only white?
Yeah, maybe paint over the sunbeams with white and then paint them again with a lighter yellow.
What should I add in acrylic colour to make it shiny?
You can varnish a finished painting with glossy varnish to make it shiny or you can add some medium during painting. I haven't tried many mediums, but there is such a thing as a gloss medium.
Problem: although I use a medium, still seems like I can’t load brush right and paint too thick.
What is difference i n floetrol additive and floetrol conditioner one is more expensive
I don't think I've used floetrol, but with a bit of googling it seems they're the same thing.
Molly would know the answer to that. She has a RUclips channel under Molly's Artistry.
I'm currently painting a canvas but I'm having problems with my red not standing out against the background
What's the background color? Is it light or dark?
@@IvyLilyCreative it's hard to explain because the background is a mixture of colours, is there anywhere I can send a picture? It's pretty unique
Do you have twitter? You could send me a picture there @IvyLilyBlog. Or if you can post it somewhere else online, send me a link.
I have Facebook and Instagram, I could maybe make a 10 second video and post on my RUclips
You can also email me a picture: ivylilycrafts@gmail.com.

I need help with my paints
Thank you very much for the tips,,,
You're welcome 😊
My paint is very choppy and not smooth at all
All of the above! I’m struggling with highly pigmented paints but these are to chalky.

All these issues is fixed buying quality (studio grade is fine) paint and just get basic knowledge about paints. It will save a lot of headache and frustration.
If people already bought their paints and have issues with painting, I don't think the first answer should be: buy new, more expensive paints.
Anyone know a better way to make opaque than adding white
You can also buy opaque paints.
