I went ice fishing today for the first time, it was a warm day, about 40F at the warmest with no wind no need for a tent. These noises were fairly constant and occasionally sounded more like ice splitting rather than thuds. Pretty cool to listen to, wasn't worried about it. Ice was 18" thick. Didn't catch a damn thing
Lucky mf I just went ice fishing for the first time over the weekend and slept on the ice in negative temperatures there was a lot of wind and I didn’t catch anything either

I dont care how many tears ive done this, how thick the ice is.. when you hear that nice boom of a huge crack it should always get your heart racing lol
That bubble sound like that means the ice is expanding. Which is a good thing lol
You're sorta correct what you're hearing is not an actual bubble. What you're hearing is the shockwaves as a new fracture line is formed in the ice as the ice grows and expands. as it expands it causes itself to become unstable and shatters in places therefore every time that happens shock waves are formed and they sound like weird little miny booms in the ice!

I went down to my local neighborhood lake. It was completely frozen over. I didn't walk on it, but when I threw heavy rocks at it, it made these noises, and I loved it.

This is why I ALWASY wear either ice snow shoes (made from aluminum with small spikes to grip the ice and distribute your weight over a greater area), or my oversized homemade cross country skies, again, to distribute my weight over a greater area, allowing you to walk on ice to thin for boots alone…BUT….when you hear that cracking sound, your heart still skips a few beats!

i took a buddy on delevan for his first ice outing ever and had 8 in of ice but when he heard a big boom walking out he hit the deck on to the ice with his legs and arms spread out like like he was trying to hug a wall! was laughing so hard i had a hard time trying to gasp for air. He was scared the rest of the day to take a step without me...
