    I am in Cancun on vacation and went scuba diving today and I was really noticing the strong surge back and forth. It was causing all of the polyps to move wildly back and forth with way more authority than I have ever seen in an aquarium. I was reminded of this video so there was my 2 pesos worth of input.

    Ryan and Randy, here is an idea. They make and sell a hand held wind speed reader. Why can't we get something made the we can check flow speeds. Can be small like a par reader. Simple fan blade that flow makes it spin and gives a reading. We can then see what flow speeds we have and locate dead spots

      They exist. We used to use them to survey flow in rivers and streams, but these were only measuring velocity, not multidirectional flow. They are pricey too.

      Like Harry said, they do exist and we bought one to use for our flow tests. VERY expensive.

    You should show some of these things you talk about, so that us beginners can actually get what your talking about. I'm about to set up my first reef tank, im trying to learn all I can before I finish setting it up

    Reef Octopus Octopulse takes the cake for me for price, simplicity, power, and natural feeling flow for a mixed reef. Not a jet, but a varied broad powerful flow. I mix it with a couple Nero 3’s on the back wall of my 4 ft tank.

    Total believer in flow being the best thing you can do for your tank. If over time you see corals growing in a certain direction, something is definitely wrong.

    Interesting finding in my experience I think most of you will relate to. I have tried every powerhead out there at one time and about 4 different ones recently. I have a cube so flow is a problem. I tried the Current-USA Eflux and they worked well with 2 pointed off the back wall. I also have the Icecap 2k that I don't care much for. I was also using an Ecotech MP40QD when infirst see the tank up. It was too much for Euphyllia even at slow speeds as it was a small cube. The Euphyllia are mostly gone with a hammer remaining. So I installed the MP40 again after 4 months of having it out. My corals have exploded with growth! It's the way the Vortech delivers flow, it's very natural. So if anyone is wondering why the Vortechs are so expensive, this is a main reason. Flow is 70 percent of reefing. LEDs are so powerful now, almost any LED at a low intensity will provide enough PAR. Flow on the other hand, is extremely important. Don't skimp on price and invest in flow above LED.

    Flow and lighting definitely go hand in hand

    In regards to how pump companies should better describe their water flow (where we all know they have been less than honest) you should do a BRS Investigates so we will know for certain what we are buying.

    Flow is definitely one of the more advanced concepts to really nail down. Love the discussion here.
    One of my biggest lessons learned is get a proper flow monitoring device for your return. Whatever your return says it’s capable of it, it’s probably not even hitting close to half of the rated flow.
    The other thing not discussed enough is that MP40s really aren’t good at pushing flow much beyond 3’ with 4’ max. Meaning in most sizable systems MP60s are a must. 6’ tank? MP40s aren’t cutting it

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      Great points; calling flow an advanced concept is certainly accurate. With 6' tanks, it's going to be helpful to place powerheads on each end so that you can get the flow that you need across the length of the tank. Plus, placing them this way will help create turbulent zones in the middle of the tank.

    The pumps drawing less power when dirty is really strange. I also would have thought the opposite. Usually when you try to hold/stop an electric motor the torque will rise as consequence and it will draw more power. A *lot* more power when it is completely stalled, hence the "stall current" that is mentioned in spec sheets,

    I think the only dead spot in my tank is right under my overflow, I also have a rock there for stability and I put nothing in that corner cause of that

    Base on your conversation about flow and the search for varied flow, multi-directional turbulence, it almost sounds like your looking for the kind of flow the Random Flow Generator® can create. :-)

    Love you guys, but you do push the Vortechs. Why not simply have extra rollers and cages for the Gyre and simply swap them out, just like a Vortech wet side? Or if you want to go a step further buy an extra gyre and simply swap it out. It would still be way cheaper to get flow everywhere and creat strong gyres than with the Vortechs and achieve similar levels of ease of use.

    I do the short blasts with my tank, mostly euphyllia, I’ve had bleached frogspawn come back within a couple months and now you can’t even tell anything was wrong with it.

    Got it... I need flow. What flow option do you recommend with a battery back up? I have a generator but I need to get home... so I require 24-48 hours of flow to keep circulation going until I can manually turn on my generator. The vortech batter back up has poor reviews b/c it doesn't last. You recommend on the 52 weeks of reefing a batter from battery plus but don't show how to hook it up? The statement you NEED a back up... could benefit from a dicussion on 3 solutions of how a lay reef keeper could actually set this up. Low end / mid end and high end.

    Are the Tunze's ya'll's favorite recommendation for wide, low velocity, and gentle flow? i am thinking about getting one from you? are there only the Tunze's as choices? and which model of them do you suggest?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      Some of the Tunze pumps have more narrow flow and others have wider flow. The Turbelle 6015 is a good example of a model with wider flow. You can usually tell by the shape of the guard on the pump.
      Alternatively, the Gyre pumps provide a nice, wide flow pattern if you're open to considering other options.
