@@olivergre1054 Seems like Tolarian Acadmey decks wouldn't care much about an Oko deck or their interaction, given how fast they can win.
Nizzahon Magic did a great RUclips video on some of the top banned standard decks, would recommend watching.
One of the best magic products ever released. So sad they stopped that tradition (unlike pokemon that still does these). Those champion decks are such a cool thing and actually a great tool to re-experience the history & evolution of magic the gathering. Hope they gonna make these someday again..!

I hope one day for gold bordered cards to be tournament legal and for every card to have a gold border. It is by far my favorite border and I'd love to see it pop up in more than the four formats they are legal in.
I think the "not tournament legal" aspect has potential. Those are basically wotc printed proxies. The answer is of course to print your own if they refuse to do so. But it's less cool, those look really fancy.

The Recurring nightmare deck reminds me a lot of Pioneer Greasefang. and the game had the same motions as greasefang vs. mono red. So much has changed in MTG yet the decks today have the same silhouette as these classics.

I think it has a much cooler toolbox of nonsense, probably because the creatures are overall weaker so you get to play more tricky interactions. And of course survival means you get to play a lot of one off answers.
Frank Karsten was fantastic, I loved his input and contextualization that he brought. Love to see this as a series!

I really appreciate that you explain The Batch - it was honestly something I never really understood since I started playing more seriously when the Stack was introduced.
The Batch is weird. It's more like YuGiOh's Chains than modern Stacks, but still has a bunch of weird interactions that break that comparison too.

I love this! Old magic content with y’all’s level of production quality is so rare. What a sad thing that wizards stopped printing world championship decks. I had some of the individual cards as a kid and gold boarders were the only way I could afford to experience powerful magic.
I absolutely love these historic matches and seeing Frank deftly explain the history and nuisances of the game from that time. More please!

I love watching these videos with old decks. Seeing magic with fair cards is so refreshing.
Back when I started in odyssey a friend had all these in real cards and we played a lot of games against them using my standard deck. Survival always blew my mind with how powerful it was. He had an answer for everything. Never won against that one or any of them but it really drew me in with how someone could construct decks like that that could basically blank out everything. The combo decks from back then while they weren’t fast by today’s standards were very interesting to watch and gave you a sense of false hope that you could pull out - until the 7/7 hit the board and even if you could remove it just came back.
I had all of these cards, sold some on Ebay in the early 2000's, I'm afraid to look at the prices now and see how much money I lost selling them

I love this video! Brian Selden's deck left a huge impression on me as a kid; it was the first time I'd seen that "toolbox" approach to deck building and a mana base that could support 5 colours. Wish they'd bring back the world championship decks, it's such a good way to introduce people to competitive play.
Recurring Nightmare and Survival of The Fittest is truly the best combo ever, you feel like a god when you're using Brian's deck, it's crazy.

My fondest memory of these was a red-green deck from 2000 that introduced me to Plow Under, a vicious spell that would somehow both manascrew and manaflood an opponent at the same time.
We will hopefully be doing one of these for every year :)
I remember as it was yesterday, Cursed Scroll was the most wanted card of T2 in the day, amazing to see this kind of content. Excellent stuff, congrats! =)

It was a great time in the game, with no Universes Beyond muddling the experience.
BTW, we didn't call it Standard. It was Type 2.
Type 1.5 was basically Modern, IIRC.
Type 1 was akin to Vintage, which is how my friends and I played before EDH was invented - 60 card, Type 1.
We played Multiplayer and Duels with the same deck.
This was so fun to watch, so much nostalgia. I'm so glad I got to play early enough to acquire some of these powerful cards. If I had been a competitive player back then I 100% would've played Brian's decklist, It has all my favorites. Can't wait to see the rest of the series showing off the rest of the decks. Thank you Ralph for your contribution.

Another rule that was changed just before these championship decks were made - there used to be a step during combat where you could activate instant speed effects after combat damage was assigned but before damage was delt.
That meant Mog Fanatic could kill 2 toughness creatures, or 2 for 1 with two 1 toughness creatures and is a major reason why the combat rules were changed.
Love seeing these old games coming back to life in modern times. Started playing at the end of '93. Sadly no longer have the champion deck Jamin was using so it's good to see it here. Fun.

That recurring nightmare deck is beautiful. It makes me sad that the power creep is so bad that this deck is basically unplayable now. All of the OP cards are taking the fun and cool simple interaction away. Now a 1 mana drop has a whole book worth of text. No more vanilla creatures being created. Mtg is more confusing than ever because they just have to keep coming up with wacky mechanics that are essentially a reskinned version of older mechanics. This was really enjoyable game play to watch.
You should check out Premodern, Survival and Nightmare are both legal and so are gold-border cards. Middleschool is another format that focuses on the same era with a different ban list.

Oh man.. I had both of these when I was growing up. Really wish I knew what happened to my old collection between all the moves my family did when I was young. The recurring nightmare deck especially made me so nostalgic sitting in my bedroom trying to understand all the pieces. So cool to see them played at such a high level!

These sets were around the time I got into MTG so this just sent me on a massive nostalgia trip. I couldn't stop smiling seeing some of the plays I used to see at FNM back in the day.
How is this not the menu for every stream out there? Provide all information you need and does not overcrowded the screen. Displays triggers when they occur which allows the viewer to follow along with combos. Looks clean as hell and isn't obtrusive of the play field. Hats off to whoever designed it

This was the format I started playing in! I started buying magic cards with Ice Age and Alliances and I remember loving the new sets of Mirage Visions and Weatherlight Tempest so much. Back in the day when a Hammer of Bogardan cost more than a Force of Will, we played with real creatures! None of this hand-holding where everything has an ETB and 3 upsides 😂
I traded away two force of wills for almost nothing. Nobody cared about them. We were all like "discard a whole extra card? Hell no"
this is like candy for me. your videos are always fantastic, but this might be my favorite since temurgy versus prismatic black! bringing frank karsten on is always a delight, and old magic makes me so engaged and interested. great work!

These retro videos are great! Obviously I'm biased because this is the Magic I learned to play growing up: I remember buying the French equivalent of Duelist magazine to understand how the stack worked and I'm still conditioned to think about creatures' P/T & CMC as basically "needing to be balanced" (and the way that was done back then looks insane now, 11 year old me was stoked to have Balduvian Horde in his deck lol). Great work as always guys. Loved Frank's chill professorial vibes and Jamin's glee at the deck popping off. And kudos on the editing, it just keeps getting better and better.

My favourite story of Mono red was when my favourite RUclips Channel from Berlin played a deck full of little monkés against a deck full of thunderbolts 🎉

I remember buying the Duelist issue that showcased the Sligh deck and outlined the mana curve. It changed my life. I reread it dozens of times. There was an offhand sentence about altering the mana curve for other decks and it was just as revolutionary as you say
I boggled when I saw the "Art of Beatdown", that was it. That's the article that made me a mythic green player
My favorite Mono red deck I played was my friends Goblins to the face deck. It was back in 2015 or so, there was nothing too special about the deck, but I was still able to place at the first tournament I entered. It left a long love for TCG, collecting, and learning about the game.
In case anybody is interested, you can delve into Premodern, where all this cards are legal (including the Gold Border versions, as it is aan unsanctioned format) and gameplay is very similar. A great format if you want to experience old Magic!
my dad had all these decks and they were a HUGE part of him teaching me to play magic as a kid! crazy watching someone who really knows what theyre doing piloting that nightmare/survival deck and remembering 6 year old me just randomly playing cards lmao

My favorite thing about the world champs was watching all the old replays of crazy plays on RUclips when I was just getting into magic. Stuff like surviving 5 ignite memories triggers, winning against Necropotence on a bad mull with multiple Unmasks from the opp, Char the face and flip a burn spell, it's weird thinking about how I was barely alive if that when they happened but they still left a lasting impact on magic as a whole.
Das ist Nostalgie pur! Danke für das Video. Das Ruben Deck hatte ich damals (auch golden umrahmt), ich spielte es gerne gegen Schulfreunde. Damals bekam ich die sammelsucht aufgrund dieses Decks...und diese sucht fällt bis heute an. Leider wurde es durch einen Wasserschaden in meinem damaligen Elternhaus mit meiner damaligen kleinen Sammlung zerstört. Aber dank des Ruben Decks lernte ich Magic bis heute lieben.

I was six years old when these decks duked it out for the World Championship, and we already had The Stack when I started playing the game years later. So it's really cool to get to see what the game played like back then.

Ever since I learned about Sligh as a deck archetype, it's become my favorite way of playing modern. My pet deck, Mono Red Obosh, is made mostly in tribute to Paul Sligh and his genius deck construction back in the day. It'd be so cool to get the deck its famous for!
These gold bordered championship decks were an amazing product imo.
I really wish they just re-released these along with printing the rest of the world championship decks to celebrate the anniv instead of those crappy Magic30 boosters.

Haven't finished the whole video yet, but wanted to comment that Mogg Fanatic used to be much better with the older rules of this time of damage in the stack. You could send him into combat, put his combat damage on the stack and then sacrifice him to his ability. He was essentially a 2/1.
I assumed you saw a few minutes later that, in these wild times, we didn't even have the stack yet :) There is no way Frank would have let us do this video with a factual error 😅
Loved the video, thanks everyone. Funnily enough, batches as described by Frank here are how Yugioh's chains work (except for the ETB effects) so you can keep that in mind for future collabs with the Yugioh channel.

@@CardmarketMagic It's not one for one of course, for example monsters in Yugioh don't actually take damage so you'll never have that Bolt and Growth interaction, but very very close.
Early Yugioh was definitely influenced a lot by Magic. For example Summoned Skull is an iconic monster played by Yugi. Visually it resembles an anime'd Lord of the Pit and its Japanese name is "Summoned Demon", written the same as the OG "Summon Demon" typeline in Magic cards before "Creature" became a card type.

Still got 4 Championship decks at home from 2003, was such fun to play friends with the RB Goblins or the GW Daniel Zink decks, still one of my favourites till today!

the first sentence brought me to tears... there really was a time before magic arena and it was amazing. It started for me in what must've been 2000-2002 and my mom bought be a pack of cards that came with a foil thorn elemental and a pc version of the game to finally teach me how to play the game I'd been collecting lmao. Even the duels of the planeswalkers releases take a shit on arena. The video is paused at 0:06 and I really don't think I need to finish it. There was a time before arena - RIP every magic player born 30+ years ago, 2 weeks ago.

I just got done reading that romcom MTG Manga (that was more like a meta retrospective tbh) and its feels nice seeing "familiar" names
My monored story started with me finally doing good enough with my kolaghan deck in a fate reforged fnm to win a promo goblin rabblemaster. I remember going home, and making a deck with all these goblin cards, imagining a comical horde of little guys, with cards like roast and hordeling outburst to back them up. I used it against my friends and always had fun making the board, even if i didnt usually win.
Even without winning that sounds like auch a fun time :)

Oh man ball lightning that takes me back. I had a red green deck for a while already, and then lost to a deck using ball lightning. So I decided to build a deck around it. ASlso green red. The idea was to clear the board with fireball, bold and chain lightning to clear thbe way and then play this beauty. It got supported by giant growth and berserk. Just 1 giant growth and 1 berserk could deliver 18 damage, which back then was soo much better then now. Today doing 18 damage in 1 tuirn is pretty common, but back then very few decks could deliver such a blow, and this dexck could do it as early as turn 3, in a time where magic was MUCH slower and most games went well beyond turn 5

I'm just now getting back into MtG, but I grew up playing it with my parents and siblings. All the cards we played with were from the 80s/90s and we didn't really play an official format, but we played something akin to 4-5 player legacy with no ban list. Between my dad's black gravedigger deck, and my mom's Hurloon Wrangler deck with board wipes, things god pretty heated lol
I remember seeing gravedigger as a teenager and it blew my mind how much value it brought! :) good memories
I think I was about 10 or 11 when these decks came out. I'd been "playing" Magic for a couple years, and I think by that point we had finally started playing by the correct rules (maybe). One of my friends got the Recurring Nightmare deck and totally destroyed my kitchen table deck with it, and refused to play anything else for weeks. So this is nostalgic for a really annoying time for me, haha.
Man, I absolutely had this deck in high school. I remember every one of those RecSur cards, art and all.
I had a chance to play on this decks back in the day, gold era of Magic! Survival it’s a control deck where you control the board with your creatures. On game 3 would be nice to bring the orcs to destroy the lands and stop the fireblast!!!

This is so fun! I remember just getting into magic in 7th grade and seeing some of these gold bordered cards and thinking they were so awesome.
I absolutely love that Jackal Pup, a creature that burns you when it's hit, was the Ragavan of its day. This back in time series with hall of famer Dr. Karsten is such a treat.
Ooh, blast from the past! I played with both of those decks when they originally came out. It was such a power leveler for casual players when these decks dropped each year and you could get hard to come by cards for like $15 at your local game store in the town mall such as EB Games or KB Toys or Waldenbooks. Reading up on all the power combos in the latest issue of Inquest, which you had to subscribe to in order to know the value of all the singles each month. And always being on the lookout for that insanely priced $400 Black Lotus at some unsuspecting small town hobby shop.
20:59 I was wondering if you guys would miss this rule change. In 1998 damage goes on the stack. The spike feeder could deal it's damage, killing the orc, and then remove it's counters killing itself and leaving damage on the stack. Mogg fanatic worked the same way, so it could deal combat damage and still sacrifice itself to deal 1 more. I dunno when, but it had changed when I started playing again after taking years off
-edit- i just saw the explanation of the "batch". It's funny because we didn't play that way. We played the way the stack works now. Everywhere I played in BC and Ontario in the '90s played with the stack, we called it that too

These chamionship decks with matches are the best. I would love you to expand it and take us through Magics historia year by year and comments about the ”best deck” each year (Necrosummer comes to mind) and also which cards that inpacted the game the most. More history and more historic games!

Was only ever a casual player but this era was bang the middle of my time playing.
Ahh, the '90's! Those were the days! Every other month I'd pick up The Duelist, or Scry, or Inquest. The local K-Mart had box sets of MTG that included cards, it's where I picked up three Royal Assassins, glass beads that doubled as counters, and a small black, felt bag to hold the beads in. A mile away was the LGS, though I didn't call it that. I called it "the Card Shop." The Card Shop had an endless supply of Fallen Empires and Homeland, and later the Championship decks (the Finkel deck was always sold out). At the time I was playing four player games of MTG with my friends(I ran a 187 deck with the three Royal Assassins, two Nekrataals, and two Avatars of Woe). I didn't get to play the Championship deck I had against my friends, but I did get to use the blanks cards that came with it. They were awesome! they could be tokens, proxies(only if I actually owned the proxied card) or a card I made up that was almost always overpowered. Pretty sure it, like two revised dual lands I had, disappered when I let my son borrow my cards. Ahhh, the '90's!
