Nice video. Tip: you mentioned the meter is not accurate during dynamic testing. The reason is, a stand alone dvom will not accurately read peak voltage. You would need a peak voltage adapter or test equipment designed to read peak voltage. Static or resistance testing will also provide faulty or inaccurate results. Hope this post helps others. I have a 185 as well good machine and a couple 200x's. on yours its super easy if it has the same square plug. just plug in the dc cdi 4 pin and take the black red wire and put 12v power to it and if the pulser is doing its job bike should spark.on another note the stator coils are pretty easy to get for those china copied those to alot of the 50-125 pitbike and atv engines have the same coils.good luck let me know how it goes. lots of good videos coming and check out some of the old projects as well
@@kylescreations4724 Thanks man , got it figured out today . Read the wiring diagram and tested everything to manual specifications and found out it was the coil. Stuck a cheap ass Chinese coil on it that came with the CDI box combo off Fleabay that previous owner stuck on it trying to get it to run but he only changed,the CDI box , it works but i like OEM original parts. Work better and last longer but thanks for reply, liked your video.
I have asked myself the same question. If its an inline 4 engine you would need two of the cdi's one for cylinders1,4 and 2,3. all you need is to run the signals for each cdi and split the power from stator. or run dc cdi then you just need 12v and the signal from the engine.if I were to do it I would choose a cdi for the rebel 250.now if its 4 seperate coilslike a v4 two cylinders probably still fire at the same time so the same process should still apply just need to figure out which cylinders fire at the same time. I might just have to do a video on this thx for watching

Hej thank you cery much for sharing this video. My problem is a 2 cyl. 2t outboard motor which I am afraid has mechanical advance and no waste spark system. Can you think of few simple cdi's I can try to use? I need it to run the engine on the full range of RPM. The oryginal is unfortunately unaviable. I would be very grateful for help.
Hey Michael. What is the year make and model. Honda did make a cdi with no advance in the early 80s and the bikes had mechanical advance. But if the engine is 2stroke these cdi will only work until about 6k rpm. You would lose some top end. But Kawasaki was big into two strokes in the 80s and might have a cdi perfect for you. I would have to look into that. Send me that info and I’ll see what I can do
@@Greasebeast1983 unfortunately the 4 stroke stuff wont work but kawasaki in the early90s had some two stroke ignitions that might help.. but try marine engines .com they have always been good for me on my old outboards
Very enlightening, I am wondering if it is doable without damage to a system/snowmobile that has no battery. Just the stator with a lighting and an ignition coil. To use the DC CDI and connect a small/riding lawnmower battery to the DC CDI and then use the trigger from the snowmachine stator and the CDI output to the snowmachine coil. Yes, use the ground also. Any thoughts on this?
If you have the trigger/pulser it will not do any damage using the dc cdi set up. the only issue is if the snowmachine is a 2 stroke. it would still start but these cdi are not able to go above 5500-6500 rpm and I know most 2 stokes go much higher. and also need to come up with a way to charge the battery or you only can ride as long as the battery lasts. depending on how many wires come from the stator for charging you can get a regulator/rectifier to charge battery. if you have any questions let me know
So glad I found your video. Youre a huge help. I've been looking for help for a while but no one on any forums can help. I picked up a 1984 Yamaha TT600 for $200. Got it home, and found the CDI was missing. As you can imagine, these are super hard to find and expensive as hell. And it HAS to be from a 83 or 84. 85+ won't work they say. Anyway, I believe they came with AC CDIs (no batteries, just kickstart). So would one of these work for me? I dont know anything about the bike so it would be great to be able to use these CDIs at least to see if the bike will run. It's a big 600cc, so I'm not sure how much those CDIs can handle. I'm kind of scared to kick it over if the timing is going to be different. lol Any help or tips you can give me about these working on a 84 TT600 would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)
hey glad the video helped. a cdi style like this will work just fine for you. your right the timing curve on these can be different depending on what there for but the curve is only noticable in the top end. bike will still run and idle just fine. now having said that I think the cdi you need to get for your bike would fit 96-2001 Honda xr600r. great bike by the way. it will handle the power and should have a very similar timing curve. it will look just like the cdi in the video. cant remember if its a single square plug or the two plug but either way it will work. now your going to have to also order the plug that goes to the cdi. one wire from stator for power one for the pulser one for for power to the coils one for ground and one for your kill wire. unfortunately I do not have the corresponding wire colors for the yamaha but get a diagram figure out each wire. if you have any issues or questions let me know Ill get my phone number and Ill walk you through it. sometimes to much for messaging back and forth thx

I just looked on eBay and most all of them say 88-2000. Is there a difference between those and the 96-01 like you suggested? Also, will older ones, from like 85 work? I noticed a lot of used OEM Honda ones on there that are pretty cheap. Thanks again!
If it says the 88-2000 is the same then it’s ok. I just know that the stopped making the xr600r for a few years in the 90s and came back with it in the late 90s. Anyway I would use the stock used one if there cheap cause they are better quality but it is used so I would hope the add says came from a running bike. 6v thing isn’t going to matter. The stator power is ac voltage. That goes to the cdi. Just get a cdi see what style plug it take and just google square plug 5 pin cdi pigtail. About 10$ on Amazon

I have a 125 Honda tmx here in Philippines it had AC CDI but a Filipino showed me how to put a DC CDI from a Chinese motorcycle it runs so much better and easy starting because using the battery instead of the stator
Interesting comment as I have a little Chinese clone of a Honda 50 4 stroke and purchased a spare cdi and swapped and they both worked. Now that there is a spark issue and I'm looking into it it seems one cdi is ac (the original) and the spare a DC cdi, I did nothing as the plug fit both although I believe one has the extra pin, I'm not 100 percent sure about the extra pin, will check at work today
U guys make people to be even more idiots and not know what to do u guys always forget to mention that also they come fos 2 stroke and 4 strokes DC or ac cdi and if u put a 4t DC or ac to a 2t it's still not work smfh
So question i have a 2 cylinder quad that the extinct cdi with 2 wire output on it cant find one at all ots an ac system. I could run the single coil wire to both coils and should work?
have to find out if it has one pulse generator if one you can use this hack if there are two pulse generators then you need to double everything check out my last video I did it to a 4 cylinder
Thanks for the info, much appreciated, you keep saying mechanical advance when it is electronic advance built into the circuitry usually thru an R/C network ( resistor capacitor that causes a phase shift based on frequency i.e. rpm) that immulate mechanical advance
That is correct. but i was refering to cdi that was used in the early 80s to late 80s that didint have advance built into them so they relied on the engine to advance the timing honda 185-250 engines from the 80s and the 4 pin cdi looks just like the ones that have advance so it can cause an issue with the engines that dont need advance. thx for watching

I’ve got a question. My cdi went bad on my 76 Kawasaki 2 stroke. I got a Chinese ac CDI and it makes spark but it won’t run. I’ve towed it behind my quad it won’t pop off at all. Has great bright spark. Any help would be appreciated. Bike ran great and started first kick before the cdi went bad.
your issue is probably the cdi. the cdi you bought was meant for a 4 stroke.the timing from the engine signal to the cdi is different for 2-4 stroke so its firing just not at the right time. Im not much of a 2 stroke guy but I have wondered if this hack of mine would for it. let me know how it goes but I would try a better quality cdi
Getting confused here. You are showing a DC CDI with a red/black excitor coil wire going into it. DC stators going to DC CDI boxes do not have a red/black excitor coil wire according to Rollingwrench's tutorial on stators which is very comprehensive.
you are correct what I am trying to show is if you have an ac powered system from the stator that in a pinch if your ac stator goes out that all you need to do is hook up a dc powered cdi to the same ac plug and then instead of the red and black wire going to the stator you put 12v to it and the dc cdi will work as long as the pulser is ok
Hi. Great video! I have a DC CDI I can hear it buzz when I turn the key. I have spark, compression and fuel. I can also turn motor kill switch on and off to hear the CDI buzz. That tells me the kill switch is good. She just won't start. Do you think my coil is weak? I can see my spark. Gapped correct. Juicy fuel on the plug. Purge the cylinder to make sure it's not flooding put the plug in after I wipe it dry still does not want to start two days working on this thing I cleaned my carburetor I have excellent fuel flow. Do you think there's a possibility that I have an air bubble in my fuel line maybe I should open my gas cap while I'm initially filling the carburetor? Thanks in advance.
Hey. Sounds like good fuel flow. Wet plug. Double check compression with guage some engines sound like there ok but not. Anything over 90 should start. Check timing. Could have jumped time. Change plug just to be sure sometimes they can spark outside engine but not bolted in. Long conversation why. Large vacuum leaks. And last is a stuck decompression mechanism which usually if you crank engine put hand over exhaust if it sucks in at all I would look at that. Good luck questions let me know thx

thanks for watching. I have seen this issue its an easy fix. the battery needs replaced. even if the battery can turn over the quad there is to big of a voltage drop and not enough to run the cdi/ecu. most dc powered bikes if the voltage drops below 11v they wont fire. this is why the quad will only try to start when you let off the button cause for a split second the engine is still turning and there is enough voltage to fire. as for the stalling while giving gas should be the same issue not enough volts and amps to fire everything. or if its been sitting for a while could be the carb needs cleaned. do the battery first even battery that reads 12.5v if its been sitting or just old (1-3 years) can still be bad. should have some good content this winter
I have a 2005 triumph America street bike. ( Twin 800) Wasnt firing on one cylinder , i tried the putting in the oven trick and it starting firing on both cylinders . Will start and idle but will not rev up as it should ( also checked carbs) àcts as its flooding but isn't. I'm guessing the timing part in the ignition is bad ?
Interesting I'm building a single speed Chinese Honda 70 z50 frame Honda 50... ... It's giving me a little trouble but I need to build a wiring harness. My GY6 50cc scooter a few years back I ordered a hot CDI with a little red light and a three-prong spark plug and another coil and that thing will run about 50 the engine is stock except for the exhaust
the gy6 cdi have a little more advance built into them which on the smaller cc engines can be hard to start i would just use a 125cc pitbike harness and cdi setup if you need electric start then the atv version
Hi I have a Honda h5518 tractor it's a 1990s mini compact tractor I have a cdi box I'm not sure with it's green plugs and it's black. It has the green four square and also the the green two plug . The four plug has 2 ground the other two have power when turn the engine over .04volts . The smaller plug has one wire it also has power when I turn engine over about 8 volts that from just the wire harnesses no CDI box hook up. I'm testing in DC. Wanted to know if it was a DC CDI or a ac CDI box thanks
I would have to look at a wiring diagram. but usually the two plug are dc and the fact that the single wire has voltage tells me its dc. most dc cdi need 10.5v to fire good strong batt cause startor can draw to much
Hey Kyle, I’ve got an 83 Honda Xl 600r that has that round style plug. I’m wanting to update since 40 y/o electronics are bound to leave me stranded at some point. The only CDIs I can find now are for 6 pin two plug style. Do you know if that could be used by adding a pigtail to covert it?
yes the 6 pin double plug cdi will work and yes you can just find the pigtail plug usually about 10. the wire colors will be very close actually. there will be two green wires both are ground dont ask why they did that but the other colors are the same. blue wire pulse generator. black yellow ignition coil. red is power from stator. im going to do another video on this topic soon.
I have an early 80's Yamaha motorcycle what I think has two pickup coils coming off the stator.. my current CDI box is bad. Is it possible for me to wire in an aftermarket CDI box even though I have two pickup coils? Most aftermarket CDI boxes are used on stators with only one pickup coil and I'm trying to figure out how to wire it with two pickup coils. I have 4 wires coming from the stator to the CDI and 3 other wires coming from the stator that go to the regulator/rectifier. Thanks in advance
you would have to run two cdi boxes one for each pick up coil. one pick up coil fires cylinders 1,4 the other 2,3. you will have to figure out whick pick up is firing which cylinders. the wiring diagram does show it. might be easier to just find a junk yard that has one.
@@kylescreations4724 I was able to get it to work with one CDI. It is a single cylinder engine and I just ran one of the pickup coils to it. The first pickup coil I wired to the CDI would cause the bike not to fire. I would get a strong spark when turning the engine over with the plug out of the cylinder head but when threaded in the bike would just not start. I tried the other pickup coil and wired it to the CDI and the bike fired right up and runs even better than before. I did have to change the ignition coil to a different style but the bike runs great now. Thanks for the reply, though!
I've been searching like a mad man, but I cannot find any information on how the CDI box advances the timing. I picked up a gs500 that burned. I'm just gonna make a minimalist harness but wanted to build a CDI for it. I understand the basic concept. I believe the advance is done with resistors. If that is the case I can use a variable resistor and a timing light to adjust it until it fires at the correct advance. This is all just a theory, but it's nice to see someone else successfully using alternative cdi boxes on a bike. If anyone can point me in the direction of a book or some reading material I would really appreciate it
I had another video where I showed me hooking two of the cdi up for a yamaha xj 750. the advance part of the cdi is ok at idle the bike used to rev out just fine im sure we lost performance but the bike ran well. Also they make these cdi with no advance if you wanted to experiment making your own advance
also got it to work on a 2 stroke jetski work great ski had plenty of power but the rev limiter in the cdi wouldnt let the ski rev out. hurt the top speed. but they wanted 250 for the cdi and 10 bucks got me back on the water
@@kylescreations4724 thank you. From what I can tell, with mine it needs 40* of advance. I found out it's actually a digital cdi unit so I have to make one and write some code to make it work right. I'm still gonna try the cheap ones just to hear it run. Save me a lot of time

No fire on a 1981 Honda CR125: (2 stroke), found leaning by a barn (for years), did get it running, then lost spark, tried all the easy obvious things, etc. - any general idea on a "universal obviously
best bet is to use a generic dc fired cdi, but first check all your grounds and on a 2 stroke always replace the plug first another you tuber harvey spooner has some good info on how to hook up
I have a 94 honda fourtrax 300 I picked up free with no spark , the exciter coil wire is not traditional Color its Grey. It's a 6 prong dc cdi I tried to do your trick and hook it straight to the battery got nothing so I hooked the ground straight to the battery and the bike , got nothing so bad cdi right? Only asking cause I watched another video where dude was testing cdi with a multimeter set to resistance , he claiming if cdi is good your multimeter won't beep touching all the terminals on the cdi well mine don't beep so I almost thought it was not a cdi issue . if the cdi has power and ground and a good pulse generator then it should spark. I would test the pulser. cdi can not be tested properly. if you test it your only testing the first component in the circuit of the cdi. all manuals that i have seen say to test everything else in the circuit and if everything checks out and still no spark then its the cdi
Hello i have a 83 Suzuki gs750 that my cdi stopped giving power to the coil that powers cylinder 1 and 4. Mine has 6 wires coming out of cdi. 4 to coils and 2 to pick ups. The cdi is hard to find and expensive for a used one. Is there any way i can use any other cdi and wire it to my bike? Idk if its a ac or dc or what. Thank you
well I just put out another video doing the same thing for an xj750. doesnt matter if its ac or dc we will make it dc.my other video shows using two 4 pin dc cdi's one is controlling 1-4 other 2-3. just take one pick up wire to each cdi you will need to find switched power for each cdi then you just need ground and the power wire for the coil. I have been riding the xj for a couple weeks and it runs great no lag or power loss if you have any questions call me 4803229107 but my two videos should explain enough
Hey man would this conversion still keep battery self charging once running? Or would i have to keep charging it? And if done to a 200es big red can i keep my killswitch or have to wire a ignition in?
the battery will keep charging and yes you can use the handle bar switch but now instead of the switch controlling ground now it controls 12v going to the cdi
I would start with the pulse generator that signals for 2/3. Then suspect the coil. But if everything checks out. Will need a meter and a manual for specs. Then it’s the cdi/ecu
just google 12v dc cdi look for the single square plug one and you will need the plug as well. another you tuber that has a bunch of great videos on this thats a little more thorough. harvey spooner
Will not run right with one cdi dc or ac. Your motor when one cylinder is at top dead cylinder other is at bottom so one cdi like that make both cylinders fire same time. But you can use 2 ac or dc one for each cylinder. Hook them up together only thing is the blue pick up wire hook one to one pickup coil and other cdi pickup wire to other pickup. If 2 cylinders it has 2 different pickups.
not on in line twin engines they are 180 out from each other so the one spark coil fires both cylinders at the same time. its called a lost spark system alot of small two cylinder engines only have one spark coil and one pulser
Just use the stator and the electrical off the next year newer, off the newer year bikes, Also if the stators is bad, how are you gonna keep your battery charged,
There will probably be issues with using different year stators and flywheels. And for the stator being bad there are two parts to a stator one that charges battery and the other on an ac cdi system that powers the cdi. A lot of times that’s just the part that goes so it will still charge battery just not fire the bike
Theres variables that you left out. You can't just take a honda cdi on a Yamaha and expect it to run. All the different ignition parts have different resistance measurements for a reason.
you are correct on a certain level. the only variables in my set up is the type of pulse generator. I cant remember the exact name of the two types but they havent made the one type in a long time. If its a bike from the mid 80s on my set up should work for a single cylinder and most two cylinder engines.now the engine rpm curve is different for most engines so you may loose a little top end power but atleast its running. I have had yamaha golf cart and dirtbike run on this set up and two kawasaki quads also several honda bikes. the point of this exercise was to show all you need is a pulser and 12v to run this. Go to Harvey spooners page this is where i learned this and he has turned into a portable unit that can be used in a pinch thx for watching if you dont believe me spend 20$ on a harnes and dc cdi and try it for your self

I’ll dig up a harness in the morning to show pin location. It will work for your twinstar just need to know what each wire goes to on the plugs for the bike. What year is it I’ll look up a wiring diagram for it

yes just showing that you can make a dc cdi work when the bike uses an ac cdi.. maybe the part of the stator that provides power goes bad this would be a solution

what bike are you working on? if I remember correctly some yamahas had a 2 wires for the pulser. If i know which bike it is and can double check the wiring

Has to have battery and would half charge and keep hot battery or sooner than later battery die and no more running with out stator to keep it charging
your right but this hack is for when the part of the stator that goes bad that charges your cdi goes bad but the part of the stator that charges your battery is still good

Kyle ! i have a problem with my peugeot vivacity 2t scooter . the timing is off(too advanced or too retarded idk) and all parts are good. the woodroof key is god and everything else. is it the problem in the cdi or something else? Also i bought that cdi brand new (The box says is for peugeot )and the spark plug and the ignition coil and piston are new so idk what is the problem on it . i checked the stator and pulse sensor and everything with multimeter and everything seems good so idk what to do ? any suggestions?
the timing on motorcycles is set from factory on the engine side of things.unless something went wrong that should be ok and yes the only thing that can change the timing is the cdi. I would try a cheap one if you get the same result then its something other than the cdi. pulse generator? I have seen partially grounded wires.but an easy one to try that might work is check the voltage while its running and rev engine see how much voltage you have anything over 14.5 will mess with the cdi and make it go bad. if this is the case and see like 16v then replace cdi and voltage regulator. I have seen this a few times. let me know how it goes
Yes but if you have a bad stator and you have a DC cdi it means that it will kick start but battery will not charge and you won't have any lights ,,,correct me if I'm wrong......greetings from Athens Greece
hey greetings from arizona us. The stator has two parts to it one side for charging battery and one half that supposed to power the cdi. They are not connected to each other usually only one side goes out at one time.the charging side wires are usually yellow or white. as long as those wires check out to charge battery. my hack will work
And forgive me if im wrong but no way you can run 2 cylinders on one Chinese cdi ac or dc. But what you can do is use 2 cdi,s one for each cylinder but one cdi would make both cylinders firing on same stroke so one cylinder be lagging bad because it be firing 180 out time.
why are people still not listening I clearly said that it will not have the same timing but close enough to get them running you will probably loose some performance but it will run. just put a china ac cdi just like the video in a 2 stroke!!!!!! jet ski ran great. eddie its best to treat everyone with respect you never know who your talking too. could be a midget kungfu master or worse. just spend 20 and give it a try on some junk i think youll be suprised
@@kylescreations4724 lmao u still don't answer my question old kymcos scooter like the kymco cobra racer /cross/ top boy have a 2t dc cdi one they use only 4 plug out of the 6 pin connector second . The 2 pin connector are in the left side and the 4 pin connector are in the right side at least for 2stroke stock cdi .. so what is the difference on that and what's the difference on a 4t cdi and a 2 stroke CD cdi ... ect because I don't think the pin out connector will be the same as any other aftermarket dc cdi
Now show them how towind a stator its so easy . Wire coated copper thickness important Some insulation paper or tape. And then count the turns when removing the old wire.

I get all of it but i have been learning for a few days. Anyone at my intermediate level would be fine. New comers might benefit from an example of showing the wires and parts on the bike. If your quad has reverse sometimes it'll have a kill switch which can go faulty and kill your spark. Keep a look out for that

Nice video. Tip: you mentioned the meter is not accurate during dynamic testing.
The reason is, a stand alone dvom will not accurately read peak voltage. You would need a peak voltage adapter or test equipment designed to read peak voltage.
Static or resistance testing will also provide faulty or inaccurate results.

I have a 185 as well good machine and a couple 200x's. on yours its super easy if it has the same square plug. just plug in the dc cdi 4 pin and take the black red wire and put 12v power to it and if the pulser is doing its job bike should spark.on another note the stator coils are pretty easy to get for those china copied those to alot of the 50-125 pitbike and atv engines have the same coils.good luck let me know how it goes. lots of good videos coming and check out some of the old projects as well
@@kylescreations4724 Thanks man , got it figured out today . Read the wiring diagram and tested everything to manual specifications and found out it was the coil. Stuck a cheap ass Chinese coil on it that came with the CDI box combo off Fleabay that previous owner stuck on it trying to get it to run but he only changed,the CDI box , it works but i like OEM original parts. Work better and last longer but thanks for reply, liked your video.

I have asked myself the same question. If its an inline 4 engine you would need two of the cdi's one for cylinders1,4 and 2,3. all you need is to run the signals for each cdi and split the power from stator. or run dc cdi then you just need 12v and the signal from the engine.if I were to do it I would choose a cdi for the rebel 250.now if its 4 seperate coilslike a v4 two cylinders probably still fire at the same time so the same process should still apply just need to figure out which cylinders fire at the same time. I might just have to do a video on this thx for watching

Can you think of few simple cdi's I can try to use? I need it to run the engine on the full range of RPM. The oryginal is unfortunately unaviable. I would be very grateful for help.
Hey Michael. What is the year make and model. Honda did make a cdi with no advance in the early 80s and the bikes had mechanical advance. But if the engine is 2stroke these cdi will only work until about 6k rpm. You would lose some top end. But Kawasaki was big into two strokes in the 80s and might have a cdi perfect for you. I would have to look into that. Send me that info and I’ll see what I can do

Very enlightening, I am wondering if it is doable without damage to a system/snowmobile that has no battery. Just the stator with a lighting and an ignition coil. To use the DC CDI and connect a small/riding lawnmower battery to the DC CDI and then use the trigger from the snowmachine stator and the CDI output to the snowmachine coil. Yes, use the ground also. Any thoughts on this?
If you have the trigger/pulser it will not do any damage using the dc cdi set up. the only issue is if the snowmachine is a 2 stroke. it would still start but these cdi are not able to go above 5500-6500 rpm and I know most 2 stokes go much higher. and also need to come up with a way to charge the battery or you only can ride as long as the battery lasts. depending on how many wires come from the stator for charging you can get a regulator/rectifier to charge battery. if you have any questions let me know

So glad I found your video. Youre a huge help. I've been looking for help for a while but no one on any forums can help. I picked up a 1984 Yamaha TT600 for $200. Got it home, and found the CDI was missing. As you can imagine, these are super hard to find and expensive as hell. And it HAS to be from a 83 or 84. 85+ won't work they say. Anyway, I believe they came with AC CDIs (no batteries, just kickstart). So would one of these work for me? I dont know anything about the bike so it would be great to be able to use these CDIs at least to see if the bike will run. It's a big 600cc, so I'm not sure how much those CDIs can handle. I'm kind of scared to kick it over if the timing is going to be different. lol Any help or tips you can give me about these working on a 84 TT600 would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)
hey glad the video helped. a cdi style like this will work just fine for you. your right the timing curve on these can be different depending on what there for but the curve is only noticable in the top end. bike will still run and idle just fine. now having said that I think the cdi you need to get for your bike would fit 96-2001 Honda xr600r. great bike by the way. it will handle the power and should have a very similar timing curve. it will look just like the cdi in the video. cant remember if its a single square plug or the two plug but either way it will work. now your going to have to also order the plug that goes to the cdi. one wire from stator for power one for the pulser one for for power to the coils one for ground and one for your kill wire. unfortunately I do not have the corresponding wire colors for the yamaha but get a diagram figure out each wire. if you have any issues or questions let me know Ill get my phone number and Ill walk you through it. sometimes to much for messaging back and forth thx

I just looked on eBay and most all of them say 88-2000. Is there a difference between those and the 96-01 like you suggested? Also, will older ones, from like 85 work? I noticed a lot of used OEM Honda ones on there that are pretty cheap. Thanks again!
If it says the 88-2000 is the same then it’s ok. I just know that the stopped making the xr600r for a few years in the 90s and came back with it in the late 90s. Anyway I would use the stock used one if there cheap cause they are better quality but it is used so I would hope the add says came from a running bike. 6v thing isn’t going to matter. The stator power is ac voltage. That goes to the cdi. Just get a cdi see what style plug it take and just google square plug 5 pin cdi pigtail. About 10$ on Amazon

I have a 125 Honda tmx here in Philippines it had AC CDI but a Filipino showed me how to put a DC CDI from a Chinese motorcycle it runs so much better and easy starting because using the battery instead of the stator

Interesting comment as I have a little Chinese clone of a Honda 50 4 stroke and purchased a spare cdi and swapped and they both worked. Now that there is a spark issue and I'm looking into it it seems one cdi is ac (the original) and the spare a DC cdi, I did nothing as the plug fit both although I believe one has the extra pin, I'm not 100 percent sure about the extra pin, will check at work today

That is correct. but i was refering to cdi that was used in the early 80s to late 80s that didint have advance built into them so they relied on the engine to advance the timing honda 185-250 engines from the 80s and the 4 pin cdi looks just like the ones that have advance so it can cause an issue with the engines that dont need advance. thx for watching

I’ve got a question. My cdi went bad on my 76 Kawasaki 2 stroke. I got a Chinese ac CDI and it makes spark but it won’t run. I’ve towed it behind my quad it won’t pop off at all. Has great bright spark. Any help would be appreciated. Bike ran great and started first kick before the cdi went bad.
your issue is probably the cdi. the cdi you bought was meant for a 4 stroke.the timing from the engine signal to the cdi is different for 2-4 stroke so its firing just not at the right time. Im not much of a 2 stroke guy but I have wondered if this hack of mine would for it. let me know how it goes but I would try a better quality cdi
Getting confused here. You are showing a DC CDI with a red/black excitor coil wire going into it. DC stators going to DC CDI boxes do not have a red/black excitor coil wire according to Rollingwrench's tutorial on stators which is very comprehensive.
you are correct what I am trying to show is if you have an ac powered system from the stator that in a pinch if your ac stator goes out that all you need to do is hook up a dc powered cdi to the same ac plug and then instead of the red and black wire going to the stator you put 12v to it and the dc cdi will work as long as the pulser is ok
Hi. Great video! I have a DC CDI I can hear it buzz when I turn the key. I have spark, compression and fuel. I can also turn motor kill switch on and off to hear the CDI buzz. That tells me the kill switch is good. She just won't start. Do you think my coil is weak? I can see my spark. Gapped correct. Juicy fuel on the plug. Purge the cylinder to make sure it's not flooding put the plug in after I wipe it dry still does not want to start two days working on this thing I cleaned my carburetor I have excellent fuel flow. Do you think there's a possibility that I have an air bubble in my fuel line maybe I should open my gas cap while I'm initially filling the carburetor? Thanks in advance.
Hey. Sounds like good fuel flow. Wet plug. Double check compression with guage some engines sound like there ok but not. Anything over 90 should start. Check timing. Could have jumped time. Change plug just to be sure sometimes they can spark outside engine but not bolted in. Long conversation why. Large vacuum leaks. And last is a stuck decompression mechanism which usually if you crank engine put hand over exhaust if it sucks in at all I would look at that. Good luck questions let me know thx

thanks for watching. I have seen this issue its an easy fix. the battery needs replaced. even if the battery can turn over the quad there is to big of a voltage drop and not enough to run the cdi/ecu. most dc powered bikes if the voltage drops below 11v they wont fire. this is why the quad will only try to start when you let off the button cause for a split second the engine is still turning and there is enough voltage to fire. as for the stalling while giving gas should be the same issue not enough volts and amps to fire everything. or if its been sitting for a while could be the carb needs cleaned. do the battery first even battery that reads 12.5v if its been sitting or just old (1-3 years) can still be bad. should have some good content this winter

I have a 2005 triumph America street bike. ( Twin 800) Wasnt firing on one cylinder , i tried the putting in the oven trick and it starting firing on both cylinders . Will start and idle but will not rev up as it should ( also checked carbs) àcts as its flooding but isn't. I'm guessing the timing part in the ignition is bad ?

My GY6 50cc scooter a few years back I ordered a hot CDI with a little red light and a three-prong spark plug and another coil and that thing will run about 50 the engine is stock except for the exhaust
the gy6 cdi have a little more advance built into them which on the smaller cc engines can be hard to start i would just use a 125cc pitbike harness and cdi setup if you need electric start then the atv version
Hi I have a Honda h5518 tractor it's a 1990s mini compact tractor I have a cdi box I'm not sure with it's green plugs and it's black. It has the green four square and also the the green two plug . The four plug has 2 ground the other two have power when turn the engine over .04volts . The smaller plug has one wire it also has power when I turn engine over about 8 volts that from just the wire harnesses no CDI box hook up. I'm testing in DC. Wanted to know if it was a DC CDI or a ac CDI box thanks
I would have to look at a wiring diagram. but usually the two plug are dc and the fact that the single wire has voltage tells me its dc. most dc cdi need 10.5v to fire good strong batt cause startor can draw to much
Hey Kyle, I’ve got an 83 Honda Xl 600r that has that round style plug. I’m wanting to update since 40 y/o electronics are bound to leave me stranded at some point. The only CDIs I can find now are for 6 pin two plug style. Do you know if that could be used by adding a pigtail to covert it?
yes the 6 pin double plug cdi will work and yes you can just find the pigtail plug usually about 10. the wire colors will be very close actually. there will be two green wires both are ground dont ask why they did that but the other colors are the same. blue wire pulse generator. black yellow ignition coil. red is power from stator. im going to do another video on this topic soon.

I have an early 80's Yamaha motorcycle what I think has two pickup coils coming off the stator.. my current CDI box is bad. Is it possible for me to wire in an aftermarket CDI box even though I have two pickup coils? Most aftermarket CDI boxes are used on stators with only one pickup coil and I'm trying to figure out how to wire it with two pickup coils. I have 4 wires coming from the stator to the CDI and 3 other wires coming from the stator that go to the regulator/rectifier. Thanks in advance
you would have to run two cdi boxes one for each pick up coil. one pick up coil fires cylinders 1,4 the other 2,3. you will have to figure out whick pick up is firing which cylinders. the wiring diagram does show it. might be easier to just find a junk yard that has one.
@@kylescreations4724 I was able to get it to work with one CDI. It is a single cylinder engine and I just ran one of the pickup coils to it. The first pickup coil I wired to the CDI would cause the bike not to fire. I would get a strong spark when turning the engine over with the plug out of the cylinder head but when threaded in the bike would just not start. I tried the other pickup coil and wired it to the CDI and the bike fired right up and runs even better than before. I did have to change the ignition coil to a different style but the bike runs great now. Thanks for the reply, though!
I've been searching like a mad man, but I cannot find any information on how the CDI box advances the timing. I picked up a gs500 that burned. I'm just gonna make a minimalist harness but wanted to build a CDI for it. I understand the basic concept. I believe the advance is done with resistors. If that is the case I can use a variable resistor and a timing light to adjust it until it fires at the correct advance.
This is all just a theory, but it's nice to see someone else successfully using alternative cdi boxes on a bike. If anyone can point me in the direction of a book or some reading material I would really appreciate it
I had another video where I showed me hooking two of the cdi up for a yamaha xj 750. the advance part of the cdi is ok at idle the bike used to rev out just fine im sure we lost performance but the bike ran well. Also they make these cdi with no advance if you wanted to experiment making your own advance
also got it to work on a 2 stroke jetski work great ski had plenty of power but the rev limiter in the cdi wouldnt let the ski rev out. hurt the top speed. but they wanted 250 for the cdi and 10 bucks got me back on the water

I didn't know if the pick up coil should be grounded on one side and the cdi going to the other with a 4 wire DC cdi.
It works with one side to ground.

No fire on a 1981 Honda CR125: (2 stroke), found leaning by a barn (for years), did get it running, then lost spark, tried all the easy obvious things, etc. - any general idea on a "universal obviously
best bet is to use a generic dc fired cdi, but first check all your grounds and on a 2 stroke always replace the plug first another you tuber harvey spooner has some good info on how to hook up
I have a 94 honda fourtrax 300 I picked up free with no spark , the exciter coil wire is not traditional Color its Grey. It's a 6 prong dc cdi I tried to do your trick and hook it straight to the battery got nothing so I hooked the ground straight to the battery and the bike , got nothing so bad cdi right? Only asking cause I watched another video where dude was testing cdi with a multimeter set to resistance , he claiming if cdi is good your multimeter won't beep touching all the terminals on the cdi well mine don't beep so I almost thought it was not a cdi issue . if the cdi has power and ground and a good pulse generator then it should spark. I would test the pulser. cdi can not be tested properly. if you test it your only testing the first component in the circuit of the cdi. all manuals that i have seen say to test everything else in the circuit and if everything checks out and still no spark then its the cdi

Hello i have a 83 Suzuki gs750 that my cdi stopped giving power to the coil that powers cylinder 1 and 4. Mine has 6 wires coming out of cdi. 4 to coils and 2 to pick ups. The cdi is hard to find and expensive for a used one. Is there any way i can use any other cdi and wire it to my bike? Idk if its a ac or dc or what. Thank you
well I just put out another video doing the same thing for an xj750. doesnt matter if its ac or dc we will make it dc.my other video shows using two 4 pin dc cdi's one is controlling 1-4 other 2-3. just take one pick up wire to each cdi you will need to find switched power for each cdi then you just need ground and the power wire for the coil. I have been riding the xj for a couple weeks and it runs great no lag or power loss if you have any questions call me 4803229107 but my two videos should explain enough

the battery will keep charging and yes you can use the handle bar switch but now instead of the switch controlling ground now it controls 12v going to the cdi

just google 12v square plug 4 pin dc cdi and the plug pigtail to go with it
Will not run right with one cdi dc or ac. Your motor when one cylinder is at top dead cylinder other is at bottom so one cdi like that make both cylinders fire same time. But you can use 2 ac or dc one for each cylinder. Hook them up together only thing is the blue pick up wire hook one to one pickup coil and other cdi pickup wire to other pickup. If 2 cylinders it has 2 different pickups.
not on in line twin engines they are 180 out from each other so the one spark coil fires both cylinders at the same time. its called a lost spark system alot of small two cylinder engines only have one spark coil and one pulser
Just use the stator and the electrical off the next year newer, off the newer year bikes, Also if the stators is bad, how are you gonna keep your battery charged,
There will probably be issues with using different year stators and flywheels. And for the stator being bad there are two parts to a stator one that charges battery and the other on an ac cdi system that powers the cdi. A lot of times that’s just the part that goes so it will still charge battery just not fire the bike
Theres variables that you left out. You can't just take a honda cdi on a Yamaha and expect it to run. All the different ignition parts have different resistance measurements for a reason.
you are correct on a certain level. the only variables in my set up is the type of pulse generator. I cant remember the exact name of the two types but they havent made the one type in a long time. If its a bike from the mid 80s on my set up should work for a single cylinder and most two cylinder engines.now the engine rpm curve is different for most engines so you may loose a little top end power but atleast its running. I have had yamaha golf cart and dirtbike run on this set up and two kawasaki quads also several honda bikes. the point of this exercise was to show all you need is a pulser and 12v to run this. Go to Harvey spooners page this is where i learned this and he has turned into a portable unit that can be used in a pinch thx for watching if you dont believe me spend 20$ on a harnes and dc cdi and try it for your self

Hi,i have an scooter,i put multiple cdi s in there but dosen t start,with the old one starts and with new one dosen t,can you tell me what to do? The old one work s but after some time dies and i need to knock it

I have had brand new cdi be junk, but try replacing the ignition coil and plug. those coils can go half bad and cause a bunch of issues

yes but you might not have 100$ for stator but 10$ for cdi, or in some cases they dont make the stator or cdi sometimes.

You had an AC plus in the DC CDI.
yes just showing that you can make a dc cdi work when the bike uses an ac cdi.. maybe the part of the stator that provides power goes bad this would be a solution
You show a 5 pin DCC Di.With leeds available on the internet , you said can't find it not a d c five
The plug or pigtail has 5 wires. I showed how both ac and dc could work. But dc definitely had 4 pins

All DC , CDI units have extra wire some wires therein the ground comes into Play

what bike are you working on? if I remember correctly some yamahas had a 2 wires for the pulser. If i know which bike it is and can double check the wiring

Has to have battery and would half charge and keep hot battery or sooner than later battery die and no more running with out stator to keep it charging
your right but this hack is for when the part of the stator that goes bad that charges your cdi goes bad but the part of the stator that charges your battery is still good

hi mr. Kyle ! i have a problem with my peugeot vivacity 2t scooter . the timing is off(too advanced or too retarded idk) and all parts are good. the woodroof key is god and everything else. is it the problem in the cdi or something else? Also i bought that cdi brand new (The box says is for peugeot )and the spark plug and the ignition coil and piston are new so idk what is the problem on it . i checked the stator and pulse sensor and everything with multimeter and everything seems good so idk what to do ? any suggestions?
the timing on motorcycles is set from factory on the engine side of things.unless something went wrong that should be ok and yes the only thing that can change the timing is the cdi. I would try a cheap one if you get the same result then its something other than the cdi. pulse generator? I have seen partially grounded wires.but an easy one to try that might work is check the voltage while its running and rev engine see how much voltage you have anything over 14.5 will mess with the cdi and make it go bad. if this is the case and see like 16v then replace cdi and voltage regulator. I have seen this a few times. let me know how it goes
Yes but if you have a bad stator and you have a DC cdi it means that it will kick start but battery will not charge and you won't have any lights ,,,correct me if I'm wrong......greetings from Athens Greece
hey greetings from arizona us. The stator has two parts to it one side for charging battery and one half that supposed to power the cdi. They are not connected to each other usually only one side goes out at one time.the charging side wires are usually yellow or white. as long as those wires check out to charge battery. my hack will work

And forgive me if im wrong but no way you can run 2 cylinders on one Chinese cdi ac or dc. But what you can do is use 2 cdi,s one for each cylinder but one cdi would make both cylinders firing on same stroke so one cylinder be lagging bad because it be firing 180 out time.
Why people still giving incomplete info if its a dc cdi 4t will not have the same timing to spark a 2t and vise verca .. same whit a ac cdi smfh
why are people still not listening I clearly said that it will not have the same timing but close enough to get them running you will probably loose some performance but it will run. just put a china ac cdi just like the video in a 2 stroke!!!!!! jet ski ran great. eddie its best to treat everyone with respect you never know who your talking too. could be a midget kungfu master or worse. just spend 20 and give it a try on some junk i think youll be suprised
@@kylescreations4724 lmao u still don't answer my question old kymcos scooter like the kymco cobra racer /cross/ top boy have a 2t dc cdi one they use only 4 plug out of the 6 pin connector second . The 2 pin connector are in the left side and the 4 pin connector are in the right side at least for 2stroke stock cdi .. so what is the difference on that and what's the difference on a 4t cdi and a 2 stroke CD cdi ... ect because I don't think the pin out connector will be the same as any other aftermarket dc cdi

Now show them how towind a stator its so easy . Wire coated copper thickness important Some insulation paper or tape. And then count the turns when removing the old wire.

A diagram or just showing the wires on the bike could help people who are not very educated in this area. I get all of it but i have been learning for a few days. Anyone at my intermediate level would be fine. New comers might benefit from an example of showing the wires and parts on the bike. Only a suggestion, amazing information!
