    Even though they are so small, taking care of a bird seems more work and more complicated than a cat.

    I can't tell you enough how informative this video has been to me! I have watched it four times with paper and pen in hand. I got my singing canary two weeks ago and he is doing very well. Yesterday I placed an order with ABBA Seed. Can't wait to offer my little one the canary 3700. Would you consider doing a follow-up video? I would love to know how to safely clean the cage including perches, and grill. I'm wanting to use my new 'poop' cleaner and not stress out my bird at the same time. How do I handle him if I need to place him in a smaller cage to clean out the larger one? Also, I think Penn Seed is out of business. I ordered soak from ABBA but don't know enough about Sidekick to place an order. How often should I give him the nesting, sprouts, etc? Today he is enjoying Romaine. What a guy!

      Thanks for watching and your nice comments. I’m really glad you’re enjoying your sweet bird. I generally sort of carefully clean the cages with the birds in them but occasionally you do need to move the birds to give the cage a real thorough scrub down. It is a real concern getting the Canaries too stressed but if you move slowly and cautiously around them every day they do seem to get used to you. It just takes practice and you have to move rather quickly if you want to catch the bird and move him you have to sort of corner and then grab without of course too hard to grip just sort of making a loose cage around the bird with your hand but enough so that he won’t get out and escape. It does take practice to do that. You can remove perches one by one and clean them outside the cage so you dont need to physically remove the bird every time you do that. I like to use my sink or bathtub for cleaning the perches real well. I tend to use a scrub brush to clean the bottom of the cage. I like to offer the birds their birdbath right before cleaning the cage and changing the papers as they can get fairly messy and obviously after doing that is a good time to change the papers on the underside trays lol since they’re going to splash water around anyway I find that’s a good time to do it then after they’ve bathed you can clean things up and put fresh paper inside the tray and they’re good to go. I also forgot to mention in the video that millet sprays are really great to have the birds love to eat millet right off the spray.

    Very good advice on canaries. My family has always loved birds- My great grandfather used to raise homing pigeons, my other family members either had canaries or parakeets. I'm researching birds as I want a breed of bird that doesn't require the emotional and mental needs like a parrot species does. As far as types, what do you suggest as I want something that doesn't necessarily have to sing but produces a soft, melodic chirp.

      If you can find a German Roller canary or a Waterslager, their song is much softer than the typical canary which can be very loud! Thanks for watching.

    Love this very informative video. I just bought some new pellets. My canary has been eating the fruit pellets and loves them. I read where pellets were supposed to be very nutritious for the canary and he seems to like them. He is being nursed back to health a bit. I’m not sure unless he had developed some mites, what his issues have been. He has molted off and on since August and was starting to loose feathers on his head and neck. I took action with some Ivermictin and have really been watching him closely. He is a bit more active, and seems to be getting better. Stopped the squeaky noise and louse of feathers finally. All that being said, do you feed any pellets food?

      No I never have but it is a complete diet so if he eats it eagerly you should be good! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thank you for all this great advice! Mine won't touch a cuttlebone or a mineral block. I'm worried about calcium deficiency-what do you recommend?

    • @DogsRGr8
      @DogsRGr8  2 года назад +1

      There are vitamin and mineral supplements you can mix in to the food or water. I have never used those. Generally if they need calcium they will peck at the cuttlebone. They din’t need much….one cuttlebone can last for a year or more!

    Hi Diva, Thank you for this wonderful video. It really provides a realistic idea of what canary care involves. I've been bitten by the canary bug and in the process of researching how to care for these amazing animals. Can I ask you, what solutions do you use to clean the cages and perches? How about food and water bowls? I keep fish (I have 8 aquariums), so I'm very water conscious. Our water has both chlorine and chloramine which is deadly to fish. I've never kept any birds before so this is new territory for me. Also do you use lights or what's your opinion on bird lights?

    • @DogsRGr8
      @DogsRGr8  2 года назад +1

      I just use regular soap and water for cleaning. I run the food and water containers through the dishwasher periodically.My birds are covered at night and have natural light during daylight hours.

      @@DogsRGr8 And that makes more sense to me than using bleach solutions - some people online have mentioned they use a 10% bleach/90% water mix to clean the cage itself - don't quote me on that. I really hate bleach and wouldn't use it with any animals. I also didn't see you using any bird lights but I thought I'd ask. I'm guessing if the bird is across from a window, not right in front of it, it would be sufficient light. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Hope you have a nice weekend :-). Blessed Be )O(.

    Beautiful video! Can you tell me how much do you feed a bird per day ? I've read that one teaspoon of seeds is enough for them, but looking at your video the dishes are full of food!

    • @DogsRGr8
      @DogsRGr8  2 года назад +1

      I keep extra food in front of them at all times. They may only eat a teaspoon or so daily but I’ll keep a couple ounces of food so they dont run short.

    I am planning on getting a canary(s) and wanted to get some advice.
    What is a good number of canaries to have? I've been doing some research and I have come across some conflicting advice.
    I'd read in a book I got on pet canaries that they are quite happy on their own and to be careful with varying numbers of them as they can fight, but then when I was talking to someone else they said that they would only sell them as pairs.
    I want to do what's best for the bird(s), singing is nice, but their wellbeing is paramount.
    The cage I have is 97.8 x 58 x 173.5 cm (L x W x H) in size for reference.
    And if it's best to have a group of canaries, what is the best combination of genders to have (for example males only, females only, 1 female and two males)?
    Many thanks (in advance) for your help. 😄

      Canaries are happy when kept singly. They are also happy as a mated pair, one hen with one cock. Especially during breeding season males will fight. If you have a very large flight cage or an aviary you may be able to keep a small group or “flock” together but even then they will tend to be possessive of their territory.
      It is best to keep them singly or in mated pairs.

    How to breed this type of bird for commercial without issue? The problem is that we have this bird is dying immediately after hatching, the mom not feeding the babies and the babies are dying. What is the reason why the mom not feeding the babies and leave the babies die?

    • @DogsRGr8
      @DogsRGr8  2 года назад

      I am not sure, without seeing your conditions, but the bird could feel threatened or stressed. Keep the father in withthe mother and babies, he will also feed them. (take the father out once the babies are two weeks old) Rarely you get a bird that is not a good mother and she should not be bred.
